I watched this video last night before I went to sleep. And I thought about it so much.. and your so right. I watch videos everyday I watch others colouring the same books pictures that I have.. and I think 🤔 why I can’t do this why can’t my picture look like this.. and than I think 🤔 I don’t need my pictures my books to look like this same colours copy because I have my own imagination and I can make my books my pictures look different like I feel like coloring them.. it’s nice looking at videos how others colour.. but the most important thing is to colour how you want and you feel with your own imagination because your own picture will represent just you.. so thank you darling. Because from now on I want my pictures to look how I want them to look even though I’ll make mistakes but they will be mine 💕💕😊😊 I love your videos 💕 thank you for inspiration 💕
I love it when someone picks up the challenge of Leila Duly's Floribunda or The Flower Year. They are my favorite coloring books. I look to color realistic images whether they be people, places or things. Your instruction on how to color hair, fur, clothing texture, leaves, you name it are greatly appreciated. I love Chris Cheng too - she's incredible. I await the day she returns to her Flower Year for another picture. I'm so happy you demo using Prismas. When I started watching coloring on RUclips it was all Polychromos. Prismas were bad and to be shunned. Then Prismas became very inexpensive and suddenly everyone was using them. I'm over 70 and on a very fixed income. I don't dream of Luminance or Holbein. I dream of turning out good work with what I have. That happens to me, I can't find my own colouring style so I try to copy another's styles and that is frustrating because I forget I'm not an artist, I'm just a beginner, a simple colourist. Thank you for your video 😊
When you were trying to figure out what color the cerulean blue was, reminded me of Dede Willingham, when she grabs one of her Prisma pencils she doesn’t, really, know what the color is she is picking, when she is grabbing it, she is just choosing the color she wants. Only when someone asks her what color is it, does she look at it. I love your videos, everything about them, especially this new format, yes, I enjoyed them when you would just do a video of coloring a picture, but these new videos are so much more informative now, you are a great teacher on everything color, and you always leave us wanting more, just like I can’t wait for the next installment of this series. Part of the schooling in art involves copying works by famous artists for the sake of understanding how they accomplished their work. It is so you can learn techniques, and learn to evaluate how to approach a piece of creative work. Not for the sake of slavishly copying. To learn the skills that get you to the point of doing your own work. There's a life lesson in there.
This is a wonderful video which I found very helpful in seeing how I have grown as a colorist and how to continue my growth. I am especially pleased with the great educational value here [I am a retired professor] in encouraging how to think about what the colorist wants to do. One of the most difficult things for any teacher is to find a way to encourage the student to find a personal way to use the knowledge that is available. You do that superbly.
I am more familiar with other media, and am new to coloring, but many times I'll just look at a picture and say, that's mostly red with silver and pink and silver in the clouds for example, a dragon. Lovely coloring. and great advice
i understand exactly what you are talking about. you look at this picture you are about to color. you close your eyes and "see the picture colored" in other words, as you see this picture, it "tells you what colors to use". in your picture, i see the large flower a dark pink around the tips of the petals then it's blended to a soft shade of pink down to a light yellow at the bottom of the flower. it's telling you the colors to use for it but its up to you on how you want the colors shaded and blended. it's a process that takes a lot of patience and developing. but if you really love to color, you practice, practice and practice to the point of, "Wow! i colored this?"
but remember, you have to color like you color, you cannot imitate. who wants to color like someone else? it will be dull and boring. this is when the beautiful God given gift of INDIVIDUAL CREATIVITY comes into play. you color in your own way, your own style.
Great video! I remember when I first started coloring how I was ready to give up because I couldn't color like other people... But your so right it's just a matter of sticking with it and figure out what you like and what works best for you.
Thank you for the inspiration you are sharing. Im 25 years old and started to get obsessed in coloring, just a beginner for now.. day by day im realizing that I cannot copy someone else style because I am blessed with my own.
I am glad you are learning that early in your journey. It's OK to learn from other people's style. I certainly have, but it's more important to develop your own. When someone can pick out your picture without a signature and say "That was done by Geodiffer" then you got style. Keep practicing and I am here if you need me.
When I started out copying other colorists I did it to learn. Chris Cheng is hard to copy, it took awhile before I could copy her. Recently I’ve started to just watch colorists for inspiration.

Floribunda looks like a LOT of work, and not just because the illustrations are detailed. My main problem is not being familiar with what these flowers are so I can look them up and see what they are supposed to look like. Here's why this is relevant: all leaves might be broadly speaking green, but the play of green/yellow/grey varies depending on the kind of flower. A friend let me colour a picture in her copy a couple of years ago, and I remember emailing the picture to the Cambridge Botanical Gardens to get the names of the flowers, after which the job went pretty well. I just checked, and Floribunda is pretty much unavailable in the UK, but the same artist has another book out, called The Flower Year. Is that one any good? Especially the paper, but the images too, I guess.

Thank you for this video. I'm one of those people that compares themselves to others. I'm too afraid and not confident enough to try my own thing, for fear of messing up the picture I'm coloring. I've been coloring yes, but I've been coloring along others...doing everything they re doing. I want to be my own person and I want to have my own style but I never know where to start! I guess it's all about practice. Practice, mess up then do it again. It's the only way I will ever learn. I need to experiment and take a chance and if I mess up...well who cares. No ones gona see it anyway! Lol

I don't think they're dahlias.. I think they are peonies. used to work in a garden center so I am pretty sure but I LOVE the idea of making them into cabbages. I am sure it will be lovely. When I lived in NY I was really into flowers and gardening, but I live in the desert now and I have managed to kill cactus and grow weeds. You are probably right. My flower identifying ability is gone. If it doesn't have a spine and try to kill you then it's not in my brain anymore.

Every time I view one of your tutorials I say to myself, "What is the lesson to be learned today?" Oftentimes it is not so much about techniques as such. It is about theory. Again not so much as it applies to art, but rather life. I know that is a different approach to take to your lessons, but if I can catch a glimpse of that then I can capture the vision of what you are putting on paper through colors. All that being said, what is the lesson here? For me I think very clearly as you addressed "copying" other artists or colorists you were telling me in no uncertain terms: BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF! Again I leave weak in the knees today and will long remember some simple blue flowers and my artistic guru......

Hi! I need advice! I just got a few different coloring books. I plan on getting The Enchanted Forest as well but I got Backyard Nature by Dot Barlowe, Forest Animals by Diane Gaspas, The Brothers Grimm by Forest Diver & Disney Dream Collection by Thomas Kinkade. They all just came in the mail today. I also got matte acrylic paint and I haven’t started coloring them yet. I’m not new to coloring but I am new to it in a sense where I have never tried to step outside of using normal colored pencils and markers and buying coloring books from Walmart. Now I am ready to expand and broaden the colorist in me lol. I don’t want to ruin the books so do you think it’s okay to use acrylic paint with these coloring books? And also can you recommend any high end coloring pencils with beautiful golds and sparkly colors as well?
NO! acrylic paint unless it's a dot or two of white. The books you mention don't have paper that is suitable for a paint medium. Colored pencils don't sparkle. They can glow if you put the right pencil combinations together. As for gold, there are metallic sets. I have the Derwent Metallic set and it's pretty good. Derwent is high end. Prismacolor is high end. Arteza is high end quality with a low end price. I can keep going but it will get pretty expensive. Once you start coloring with higher end pencils you are probably going to want higher end books. Look for Klara Markova, Hanna Karlzon, Leila Duly,

Yes, I am ok. I have a really awful cold. I have been trying to rest. I don't want to move forward with colors and capture my cold on video forever LOL. I finished a video for tomorrow morning but I have not colored a thing in days.
@@RealMelodyBlue I have one coming out tomorrow but it's not a coloring lesson. I actually had an ear infection and it made me feel very dizzy so every time I picked up a pencil the book began to spin. It's getting better.

Yes, I was told what they are and there is a tiny guide in the book. I never care. I color flowers what I want them to look like. I always think, my art, my world, my choice.
I hate it when people compare artists to colourists. Someone like Chris cheng, I wouldn't class her as a colourist, she's clearly done art all her life and probably went to college for it, so for colourists to compare her other colourists is simply unfair and it's probably one of the reasons a lot of people were put off putting their pictures online, because they knew they were up against actual artists. Were not all in the same group here. I personally don't like Chris chengs style, I think it's boring, there is clearly talent there but I think she shouldn't be classed as being in the colouring community because normal colourists look at her work and think "oh if I work hard enough I'll get my pictures as good as hers", when her pictures are done from an artists point of view, not a colourists. I read about a few people who stopped colouring all together because they were getting put off with people like Chris cheng and maybe Johanna basford should stop giving help and freebies to artists like Chris cheng because clearly your average colourist needs more help than people like Chris cheng. There's a few other ones that JB gives help and freebies too and all these people are artists, not colourists. Go on JB try and sell your books to just artists and not colourists out there an see how far you get. It's the normal, average colourist, who likes doing it for fun who would be better served getting your help and freebies. Sorry for the rant but this has been bugging me for a long time!!
Colorists are artists but normally once you get past the intermediate stage you become more interested in advanced art. That's the point where coloring in books is frustrating because of what it takes. The paper gives out way before you are ready to give it up. I know I have made it to the detail stage and lost tooth. This is why I try not to use coloring book paper anymore and encourage those who have a printer to use that instead. As for Chris Cheng, I love her art. I watch all her videos but agree she is not the average artist. I can see your point but you also see what can be done with a page. Many coloring book artists give RUclipsrs their books to color. I get them too, but I turn a lot down also. If a book doesn't inspire me I won't color in it. Alena Lazareva gives me her books, but I truly love her artwork. I now only get her PDF because I don't really color in the books. She doesn't even have to ask me if I want it. She just sends it. It's the same in the Beauty Community. People like Jeffrey Starr gives promotional makeup to the people he knows will promote his stuff. The packages are quite nice. Channon Rose once did a video showing all the promo packages she gets. RUclips crafters often get supplies. That's my favorite perk. We are under no obligation to do positive reviews. Companies don't even talk to us about it. Often I will get a product and tell a company I didn't like it before posting anything about it. The company can choose to walk away. It's how it works.
@@ColorMyWorld totally agree with everything you said. When JB first came out she made a speech in an interview that she wanted everyone to be encouraged to colour. But when you keep giving shout outs, tips and freebie to artists like Chris cheng ( who clearly doesn't need anything JB sends her). It kinda sticks in my throat and I think to myself. Can you imagine if your a not so great colourist and one day you get a parcel from JB with helpful hints, free goodies and an advanced copy of her book, can you imagine how much that would inspire someone to really get into art and continue to get better. I think these are the people she should be giving freebies too, not her rich artist friends, because she wants her pictures in her book to look amazing, which they always do because their artists. I just think JB only cares about the fans who have real talent. Look at her last book. I don't know many colourists who want to learn to draw. They want to colour so they can tune out from their problems for a few hours. Sorry if I'm ranting, I just hate unfairness and if you look on Instagram and see who she sends these goodie bags, you will see they are all artists......whats the point?? I hope JB remembers who buys her books and competition is rife so I would be careful with the next steps she takes!!
I was really liking this video until you said that once you can see it in your head finished and put it down on the paper then you have crossed the line from colourist to true artist. This is pretty hurtful to those with aphantasia (an inability to visualise or see anything in your mind) like me. I will NEVER be able to do that. And so now I am discouraged even after getting over 1K likes on my recent colouring page with everyone saying I am gifted and have true talent. There are people with my condition that are amazing artists so I really want to believe that what you are saying isn't true. :(
Sheree, You can be creative but create in your own unique way and my entire channel is devoted to "Teaching" art. You don't have to be born with the ability nor do you have to have the ability to visualize to be creative. My Son-in-law is color blind but you would never know unless he tells you. In fact I was one of the last to know and I was shocked. He has true color blindness as most of the men in his family yet has really good taste. You can be blind and still be an artist. You can be color blind and still draw a rainbow . Being able to visualize the next color is only one way but it's a way of transitioning even you have it and don't realize it. You don't have to visualize the color wheel. You know red comes next to orange, which is across from blue. You had to learn it so you can create art that way. Plus. nobody needs to know any colors if they are using a reference photo. You have to recognize the color and put it where it goes kind of like a big puzzel. That's what I'll be teaching in my next class.

I kill cactus so I am in the same boat as you. I just color them what ever color catches my eye, I have been corrected a few times,

Every time I view one of your tutorials I say to myself, "What is the lesson to be learned today?" Oftentimes it is not so much about techniques as such. It is about theory. Again not so much as it applies to art, but rather life. I know that is a different approach to take to your lessons, but if I can catch a glimpse of that then I can capture the vision of what you are putting on paper through colors. All that being said, what is the lesson here? For me I think very clearly as you addressed "copying" other artists or colorists you were telling me in no uncertain terms: BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF! Again I leave weak in the knees today and will long remember some simple blue flowers and my artistic guru......

Hi! I need advice! I just got a few different coloring books. I plan on getting The Enchanted Forest as well but I got Backyard Nature by Dot Barlowe, Forest Animals by Diane Gaspas, The Brothers Grimm by Forest Diver & Disney Dream Collection by Thomas Kinkade. They all just came in the mail today. I also got matte acrylic paint and I haven’t started coloring them yet. I’m not new to coloring but I am new to it in a sense where I have never tried to step outside of using normal colored pencils and markers and buying coloring books from Walmart. Now I am ready to expand and broaden the colorist in me lol. I don’t want to ruin the books so do you think it’s okay to use acrylic paint with these coloring books? And also can you recommend any high end coloring pencils with beautiful golds and sparkly colors as well?
NO! acrylic paint unless it's a dot or two of white. The books you mention don't have paper that is suitable for a paint medium. Colored pencils don't sparkle. They can glow if you put the right pencil combinations together. As for gold, there are metallic sets. I have the Derwent Metallic set and it's pretty good. Derwent is high end. Prismacolor is high end. Arteza is high end quality with a low end price. I can keep going but it will get pretty expensive. Once you start coloring with higher end pencils you are probably going to want higher end books. Look for Klara Markova, Hanna Karlzon, Leila Duly,

Yes, I am ok. I have a really awful cold. I have been trying to rest. I don't want to move forward with colors and capture my cold on video forever LOL. I finished a video for tomorrow morning but I have not colored a thing in days.

@@RealMelodyBlue I have one coming out tomorrow but it's not a coloring lesson. I actually had an ear infection and it made me feel very dizzy so every time I picked up a pencil the book began to spin. It's getting better.

Those flowers look like peonies to me. But I can see how you can turn them into cabbages. I'm not good at colour palettes...I usually google the flowers and choose from natural colours.
Yes, I was told what they are and there is a tiny guide in the book. I never care. I color flowers what I want them to look like. I always think, my art, my world, my choice.

I hate it when people compare artists to colourists. Someone like Chris cheng, I wouldn't class her as a colourist, she's clearly done art all her life and probably went to college for it, so for colourists to compare her other colourists is simply unfair and it's probably one of the reasons a lot of people were put off putting their pictures online, because they knew they were up against actual artists. Were not all in the same group here. I personally don't like Chris chengs style, I think it's boring, there is clearly talent there but I think she shouldn't be classed as being in the colouring community because normal colourists look at her work and think "oh if I work hard enough I'll get my pictures as good as hers", when her pictures are done from an artists point of view, not a colourists. I read about a few people who stopped colouring all together because they were getting put off with people like Chris cheng and maybe Johanna basford should stop giving help and freebies to artists like Chris cheng because clearly your average colourist needs more help than people like Chris cheng. There's a few other ones that JB gives help and freebies too and all these people are artists, not colourists. Go on JB try and sell your books to just artists and not colourists out there an see how far you get. It's the normal, average colourist, who likes doing it for fun who would be better served getting your help and freebies. Sorry for the rant but this has been bugging me for a long time!!
Colorists are artists but normally once you get past the intermediate stage you become more interested in advanced art. That's the point where coloring in books is frustrating because of what it takes. The paper gives out way before you are ready to give it up. I know I have made it to the detail stage and lost tooth. This is why I try not to use coloring book paper anymore and encourage those who have a printer to use that instead. As for Chris Cheng, I love her art. I watch all her videos but agree she is not the average artist. I can see your point but you also see what can be done with a page.
Many coloring book artists give RUclipsrs their books to color. I get them too, but I turn a lot down also. If a book doesn't inspire me I won't color in it. Alena Lazareva gives me her books, but I truly love her artwork. I now only get her PDF because I don't really color in the books. She doesn't even have to ask me if I want it. She just sends it. It's the same in the Beauty Community. People like Jeffrey Starr gives promotional makeup to the people he knows will promote his stuff. The packages are quite nice. Channon Rose once did a video showing all the promo packages she gets. RUclips crafters often get supplies. That's my favorite perk. We are under no obligation to do positive reviews. Companies don't even talk to us about it. Often I will get a product and tell a company I didn't like it before posting anything about it. The company can choose to walk away. It's how it works.
@@ColorMyWorld totally agree with everything you said. When JB first came out she made a speech in an interview that she wanted everyone to be encouraged to colour. But when you keep giving shout outs, tips and freebie to artists like Chris cheng ( who clearly doesn't need anything JB sends her). It kinda sticks in my throat and I think to myself. Can you imagine if your a not so great colourist and one day you get a parcel from JB with helpful hints, free goodies and an advanced copy of her book, can you imagine how much that would inspire someone to really get into art and continue to get better. I think these are the people she should be giving freebies too, not her rich artist friends, because she wants her pictures in her book to look amazing, which they always do because their artists. I just think JB only cares about the fans who have real talent. Look at her last book. I don't know many colourists who want to learn to draw. They want to colour so they can tune out from their problems for a few hours. Sorry if I'm ranting, I just hate unfairness and if you look on Instagram and see who she sends these goodie bags, you will see they are all artists......whats the point?? I hope JB remembers who buys her books and competition is rife so I would be careful with the next steps she takes!!

I was really liking this video until you said that once you can see it in your head finished and put it down on the paper then you have crossed the line from colourist to true artist. This is pretty hurtful to those with aphantasia (an inability to visualise or see anything in your mind) like me. I will NEVER be able to do that. And so now I am discouraged even after getting over 1K likes on my recent colouring page with everyone saying I am gifted and have true talent. There are people with my condition that are amazing artists so I really want to believe that what you are saying isn't true. :(
Sheree, You can be creative but create in your own unique way and my entire channel is devoted to "Teaching" art. You don't have to be born with the ability nor do you have to have the ability to visualize to be creative. My Son-in-law is color blind but you would never know unless he tells you. In fact I was one of the last to know and I was shocked. He has true color blindness as most of the men in his family yet has really good taste. You can be blind and still be an artist. You can be color blind and still draw a rainbow . Being able to visualize the next color is only one way but it's a way of transitioning even you have it and don't realize it. You don't have to visualize the color wheel. You know red comes next to orange, which is across from blue. You had to learn it so you can create art that way. Plus. nobody needs to know any colors if they are using a reference photo. You have to recognize the color and put it where it goes kind of like a big puzzel. That's what I'll be teaching in my next class.
