My sister is an art teacher with a very low budget. Each student only received 6 markers. So she taught them how to use colored pencils over markers to create gradients and even new colors. She said they were all amazed and loved the technique!!!
Hi Sarah! I recently retired, and will be 69 in a month. I bought an adult coloring book, sort of hippy stuff, and did my first one yesterday, a group of magic mushrooms. Just color, no shades, no gradients, but having watched this video, I will be getting my act together, and maybe revisiting the first one I did. Thanks!
Reminds me on vacation i was helping 5 year old girl with a coloring :) (spa owner's daughter) . She had a coloring book with princesses and "magic" patterns revealed by coloring with a marker ... but not everywhere which she found boring. I showed her she can add her own patterns as well, add additional jewelry to the princesses etc ... What a fun :D . Coloring with a kid is even better than adult coloring :) .
I like using sepia for shadows, too. It will blend with almost every colour if you use it properly - light, very light layers and blening with slightly darker shades than your main colour.
Hi Sarah, I’m so happy I stumbled on your video this evening. I have recently broke my leg and coloring is keeping me happy and inspired. I decided to use this time to improve my coloring skills and oh my goodness this video and YOU are heaven sent. The wag you lay out information makes me feel so supported. Thank you so much! You have a new subscriber here and I also joined your FB group, I’m excited to watch more of your videos
I was just about to toss a page because I was not happy about it, then I watched your video and started to add some tidbits here and there and it gave the page a new life. Thank you! I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos!
I found your channel through your collab with Jazza and I'm so happy that I did. You are a wonderful teacher and I appreciate the effort you put into helping us improve our art or just get started. I'm 51 and have always let fear of not being "good enough" hold me back from even getting started. You, and many other art channels have inspired me, and many others, to just pick up the tools and start!
Thank you. I feel very inspired by all your tips. 8 colouring books & Art Therapy monthly magazine issues all art supplies & still too scared. You said I must plunge in, now I can cancel my fear & proceed with baby steps. Hugs & bigger blessings from a sunny South Africa 🇿🇦
Wow! Watching this video shows how much you have grown in just one year! Not in a bad way just the growth. The wall is so blank 😂 love everything you have done ❤
Coloring has been a favorite pastime since childhood. I’m happy that my grandkids love it as well. I am always looking for new ways to make my coloring better.
I just came here looking for tips, and am I ever thankful that I found your page! You have shown me some basic, yet very intricate forms of shading. This makes your pages look so beautiful. I can't wait to try these tips out on my own pages. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the coloring tips. I’ve been using some cheap colored pencils from when my now-grown kids were little and they don’t blend or cover well. I’m looking forward to seeing what I can do with better pencils soon.
I also use Crayola crayons for the base. After using them, I scratch the surface, leaving just the color and then shade with a colored pencil. The shading requires a bit more pressure but the effect is quite good 🙂
Another help is if you are using a color palette and you are not comfortable enough to eyeball it. And use a color pencil picker app or marker picker app to match colors from palette. I did at first til I got more comfortable
I'm so grateful for your videos! Today, I've watched 3 shadow videos and I started working in the shading and shadowing and my flower petals are coming to life! I'm using Arteza pencils while I wait for the Caran D Ache pencils to arrive. Thank you so much. I enjoy how you teach. Have a wonderful day!
I love tip 1, I've been doing that for a long time now when I'm colouring with the kids and they just love the effect, my daughter is even trying to do this to now, after I explained it to her this summer. Of course she is still struggeling with pressure, but she loves the improvement. She first did shading with black or grey pencil, but with a darker colour she loves it so much more. What I like to try next is blending colours that are next to each other in the colour wheel, cause I really loved your example page.
Can't wait to try this! In all my coloring books, I either use marker or colored pencil. I'm not sure why, but I've NEVER thought of using both as an option 😂
I’m not a beginner in adult coloring. I’m a fetus. I have all the supplies I need. I bought both your catalogs. It’s so intimidating to see the coloring that is out there. Keep the tutorials coming. I know I’ll get better with practice. I’ve watched more RUclips videos than I have practiced coloring. I sit down with everything I need an suddenly I feel overwhelmed. I get up and walk away. Everyday the cycle repeats itself. I’ve spent years art and Bible journaling as well as card making. Coloring is completely different. I subscribed to your channel. Looking forward to learning. I have unsubscribed to some videos 1-2 hours 😬 that’s a lecture. Thanks
+JuJu and WamWams well, you’ve got the supplies so you’re off to a good start! I know the feeling of being intimidated and wanting to give up. I find that I’m the same when I take on something unfamiliar and I want to do it well. I remember when I first wanted to try acrylic painting, I was so frustrated that I prepared everything 3 times on separate days before actually painting! And I was so mad at myself for not starting! As always, the best thing is to just START and don’t be afraid to fail. I find it’s SO much easier if you embrace the mistakes, even before they happen. Start a piece with the goal to learn, not the goal for perfection. By the end, if you’ve made a mistake, you’ll still have learned something, so you’ve achieved your goal. But most likely, you’ll also have developed a skill, surprised yourself, and created something beautiful. I’d love to hear how you go- please keep me updated!
I felt the same way about watercolor. I bought all the expensive brushes, paints and paper and then froze. The way I solved it was to make myself do a warmup page every day. I’d pull out a page from my cheap watercolor pad and just do circles and squares. I’d play for a while, layer on top, and fill up the page. It suddenly wasn’t a hard task to move on to something more difficult.
Sara James thank you! I’m glad you are finding them helpful! Even as someone who knows how to pick colors, I find myself referencing them constantly for ideas!
I would not have thought of combining markers and pencils, and was just thinking that you can't do the shading with markers when you showed us how. Thank you!
I actually don’t do this enough! I love the brightness and quick coloring with markers but much prefer shading with pencils... so mixing gives the best of both

Hi. I love that you're creating a guide for which Copic codes match the colours in the catalogue! That will be extremely helpful to me and means I will use the catalogue more often! Maybe even get version 2! I would also love a list for Holbein pencils, but I'm hoping I can find a conversion chart from Prismacolors, which you said you'll be listing, too, to Holbeins.

Thank you for your inspiring and so needed content! Irreplaceable for the beginner as I am :) May I ask, what is the progarmm/book with color palette you are using?
I like the color catalog, but do you have an additional resource that pairs the palettes with how to make it with popular media like Prisma colors, Poly Chromos, Ink Tense Gelly Rolly's, and various others. I am not a beginner either but I find the most difficult issue outside of maintaining the proper light source, is mixing the or blending properly so you get that correct palette and then choosing your shading tools and technique right (cool, warm or french grays, white and black) to ensure you don't end with mud or picture too dark.
I love you and this is the why I subscribe to you because I want to know more ways easy ways to do art I'm a very lovable person to art because I love art so much and I've always wanted to be an artist on paper and on nails I've always wanted to be up artists on paper longer than I wanted to be an artist on nails but I can get my tips from you thank you for being alive and doing videos and thank you whoever your mother is thank her for bringing you into this world and for you having the thought to make a RUclips channel for art because I it's always been my dream to be an artist and I love art
Hi, just happened to click your video on the 5 easy tricks to improve your coloring. You're a wonderful teacher. I found the trick w/the gel pens the best. You mentioned a color pallet that you were using on your tablet, is this an app, web site etc. I too, tend to use the same colors all the time and I'd like to expand my color range. Thank you.
Can you add Ohuhu marker numbers to that as well? I just invested in the ENTIRE collection of the Alcohol set of Ohuhu brand Markers, they are WAY cheeper than Copics, but work near the same! Copics were just way out of my budget.
Thank you for the useful video! I use Winsor and Newton markers with I have slowly been expanding my collection. As a secondary medium I would like to get some pencils, which would you recommend?
I actually have a lot of videos reviewing different pencils that talk through my recommendations! It depends on a lot of factors, so I recommend watching some of those!
Like when you use eyeshadow or glitter on your drawing, how do you seal that in?? I know you have mod podge, but they make the page either glossy or matte, and I love how colored pencils look without mod podge on... Maybe make a video about this, or a video of how to store your drawings (if you don't draw in a coloring book) BTW: can you also do Arteza colouring pencils, with the code/name matching to the cooler catalog??
I have a survey at the moment for the next pencils to be added in the companion. Arteza is a popular choice, but your vote will help make sure it’s one of the next ones to be made- sarahrenaeclark.com/survey

I assumed that an Australian artist would charge in AU$…so I quickly backed out as it turned out to be $76 approximately which was more than I was wanting to pay for a digital download…buyer beware!
Sorry you didn’t realize. I charge in USD because I have many international customers- in fact, Australians make up less than half of my customers. It’s why my spelling is American too 😉 I’m trying to cater to everyone. And the price is marked as USD before you checkout. I’m not trying to trick anyone 🤷♀️
