- Following up on a mailbag from a viewer who sent Adam some new mini pry bars, the makers of said pry bars have sent Adam a care package of a beautiful long wrecking bar. The fine folks at Gränsfors Bruk not only shared their hand forged crowbar, but also a sample of their small forestry axe that Adam can't help but test with a quick shave.

Gränsfors Bruk is THE choice axe company of some of the world's most renowned bushcraft and survival experts. A few years ago when I purchased my own small forest axe I was confused that they did not provide a metal pin wedge to hold the axe in place on the handle. I came to find out that they now fit the axes so perfectly that they don't actually need one (it's been 5 years of hard use on mine and it's true). They also removed it to commit to being a more eco-friendly company and I think that is just one of the most fantastic things I've ever hear! A company that has gotten so good at their craft that they removed a part of the product because it wasn't necessary to provide the same quality of product. Brilliant.

In case Adam doesn't know, the are 2 letters stamped on the head of the axe, they are initials of who made the head and in the Axe book (Yx Boken) you get to a page where all names with a picture are listed so you can see exactly who made that specific head.

People who aren't big into axes and bushcraft might not know that the GB Small Forest Axe is the single most popular and coveted camp axe in the world, so this is a very very kind gesture on their part. Many congrats to Adam!
One thing that's worth mentioning if anyone gets hyped up from this showcase video and starts thinking about grabbing one of their own: please please please do some research on proper axe safety before picking one up and going wild with it. It's somewhat counter-intuitive, but a small axe with a short handle like this (while the perfect size for most people's needs in the woods or workshop) is much *much* more dangerous to the user than a larger axe with a long handle.
Traditional felling axes and splitting mauls with long handles tend to sit in a zone, proportionally, where a bad cut or a miss off target in most chopping tasks results in the axe hitting the ground. But with a short handle, like the one on this SFA, a bad cut or a miss off target is much more likely to result in the axe head traveling back towards the user's legs, because the axe cannot reach the ground at all.
Beloved British woodsman Ray Mears has some truly excellent videos about how to use this exact model of axe in the safest manner possible. I highly recommend people check those out, he has a lovely presentational style of teaching that would be very familiar to fans of the Tested channel.

Hi Adam, if you are in Sweden take the chance to visit their shop. It’s in a small village with only a handful of houses in the beautiful Swedish countryside. They even offer courses where you can forge a hatchet, knive, etc. I was lucky enough to have been given one of those courses for my 18th birthday after I had my gränsfors bruks hatchet for some years and it was amazing. Can’t recommend it enough.
The quality of there products is something else. They stay razor sharp and are super comfortable. And if ever the handle breaks, they will replace it. It’s truly a great company.
I love all my axes and hatches from them.

Been to two of the week long courses and cannot recommend them enough! I have 3 of the axes they make and 2 I made myself with the steel they use. Great courses, great axes also the food Hasse makes you every day of the course is amazing. Like camp but you get to smith for a week with food and lodging. Take a dip, go to the sauna and then to your cabin where you pass out with a smile on your face...

Adam has always loved giving other people the credit that they so richly deserve. Anytime you can spark off a virtuous circle, it's worth it.
When I still had a corporate job, I had ordered the same Gräsfors Bruks as a present for a friend. Working long hours and traveling a lot, I had it shipped to my job address. Before I could wrap it properly, it just lay on my desk for a few days. I got many, many weird looks from my colleagues but also admiring ones: the security guard looked at the axe, then at me, then at the axe again: "Man, that's a serious axe you have there!" ... I think this was meant as a compliment.
Good thing HR didn't catch him admiring your axe in the office.

As a Swede, I would call that shade of blue "kofotsblå" (crowbar blue, or "cow's foot blue" if we're going for the literal translation). I have never seen a crowbar in a different color, except for cheap imports with store-brand colors.

I am a wood worker and ever since my uncle gifted that very same axe you have here to me from his collection, I have exclusively bought all my axes from this incredible company. This clip made me very happy. I spent my formative years not 30min drive from Gränsfors Bruk and has visited many times. Being in the boy scouts a Gränsfors axe was the highest standard. My father bought a double edged throwing axe for my brother and I that we abused over many summers until it was stolen. But I still have a small Gränsfors axe that I use for bush crafty things. I'm happy to see that Adam now got one as well, and that you all got to know about them 🙂

Everyone is talking about the axe, but I'm going to extoll the virtues of the large Renovator's Bar. I've owned one for two decades and it is the Lever to Rule Them All. It is one of my favorite tools. All of my colleagues who have used it, return to borrow it again. In some the places I used work, there is an established home for "Blue". I recently moved to another city, and Blue's departure was mourned almost as much as my own. I have received phone calls about jobs, and been specifically told, "Make sure you bring Blue with you, we will need him." If you need a big awkward incredibly heavy object moved with delicacy and precision, you need a Gransfors 35" bar. The thinner edges means it can slip more easily and with less damage under the object to be moved. And the obtuse angle of the crook end means you can get it under a wall or a door, or what ever, without the other end trying to bury itself in the adjacent perpendicular surface. It will outlast me, It will outlast my nephews who will inherit it, it will probably, someday, be loaded into a colony ship and taken to another planet. Long may it reign, in it's own very specific niche, forever.
I’m a proud owner of 3 Gransfors Bruk axes. Small belt axe, Wildlife Hatchet, and Hunters Axe. Such a fantastic product. Mainly make fires for my fire pit and for camping tasks while traveling with our 20ft Airstream. I widdle the occasional spoon and love pairing one of my axes with a solid bushcraft knife. Currently rocking several Bark River knives, but started my bushcraft knives with the much more affordable Finland based Marttiini Knives.
Adam - Aussie axe collector here. That blue shade for the paint is a traditional colour for Swedish axes and tools - it's how they differentiated themselves in the international market, the shorthand colour for Swedish goods. They stood out on the shelf. Old Aussie tool ads often used to mention just "Swedish Blue" axes - no brands, but likely the were from Gransfors Bruk, Hults Bruk, or Wetterlings (may they rest in piece). American-, British-, and Australian-made axes were brand (Kelly, Brades, Hytest, etc.) but Swedish axes were simply often listed as "Swedish Axe" - often, it has to be said, for slightly cheaper than the name brands. Of course, it's Sweden, so it's fantastic steel, and I wouldn't say no to one.
If you're lucky and wondering around a junkyard or second-hand shop or garage sale, you may see an old head with that shade still on it - or traces of it.

Blue is also a very visible color in nature, because it doesn't naturally occur. Try to find a red coloured axe in autumn leaves.
Respectable? More like superb!... That's one of the finest axes I have ever owned. I have had my G&B foresters axe for over 15 years and it's still going strong!...
Those axes are life changing. Once you get used to having one, nothing else really compares.
I have spent about 35 years collecting and using edged tools, the GB axes are my favorite of literally hundreds of pieces. My awesome wife and daughter got me that exact axe for this past Father's day because we have a lovely oak that likes to drop limbs and branches with every huge storm. This axe sits on a stand on the mantle of the fireplace in full display because it is just so damn good.

I have an ax addiction, always buying the $2 axes at flea markets. The Gransfors Bruks axe I have is like wearing a glove. Amazingly sharp edged and the handle is just amazingly comfortable. Hats off to our Swedish friends.

That small forest axe is the best axe I own. I manage a campground and spend most of my time outdoors. This axe is with me 95% of the time. I find this to be the best all-around axe and can be used for just about anything. They are great quality and I have a larger version dedicated to tree felling. As long as I don't do something stupid with it, some day that axe will be used by my son.

Ah! I remember finding a pry-bar left by a man who was breaking into garages to steal. But he dumped his pry-bars into a ditch as he was caught red-handed one day. I took his teal pry-bar and have used it ever since. It's a wonderful tool. Hope you get some mileage out of yours!
I bought a Gränsfors Bruk axe about eight or ten years ago after having only a cheap axe. They are truly wonderful tools.
I've had two of their wrecking bars for what must be over twenty years now. If I ever come across something that either has to be moved, or removed when doing renovation work, they are the first tools I pick up. Simply amazing pieces of steel. Enjoy yours Adam.

My uncle and I *swear* by Gransfors Brooks kit. The small forest axe is a truly fantastic piece of work, beautiful to look at, hold, and even use. The way that wood will warm to your hand during use is very lovely, especially after you get a nice coat of oil over it!

OMG! Being from Minnesota originally, and only briefly having had the opportunity to live in Sweden, Gränsfors Bruk is literally my favourite axe forge in the world and their small forestry axe is my favourite axe of theirs being an _awesome_ and _excellent_ camp axe. I didn't even know they made wrecking bars, and you're right, that is a beautiful shade of blue. I could legitimately buy the smaller one for either my wife or my mother-in-law for Mother's Day.
I was introduced to Gransfors bruks by Ray Mear’s bushcraft videos. I’ve had the small forest axe of theirs for many years, it’s been on many trips in the forest and is my favorite axe i own.
I'm am Oak Frame Carpenter in the UK, I have both of those, as well as plenty of their other axes. The Bar is probably one of the greatest tools I own, it NEVER lets me down and is so much more than just a bar.

I got the Scandinavian forest axe a few years ago for camping and bushcrafting, and it's an absolutely joy to use. I plan on adding one of their hatchets to the collection in the near future.
HB axes are incredible. I've had several for many years and they are absolutely worth the price to get a handmade, craftsman level tool
I have that axe and it is small axe perfection. One of my all-time favorite tools. You will love it.
As a generalist maker and MASSIVE fan of the bushcraft arts, I'm qualified to tell you, the Gransfors Bruk axes are THE GOLD STANDARD!!! That's not just up to snuff, it's the standard all axes are held up to.
I have exactly the same model axe from Gränfors Bruk. One of my most prized possession. A hiking friend that never let you down. There are some videos on youtube showing how they are made!

Ive used the axes from Gränsfors for woodcraft and in the Scouts for years, i think its one of the best brands out there so was really fun seeing you have the same model i use weekly.

My first axe was a GB Wildlife hatchet, and that thing is legitimately one of the best things I've ever purchased. It never seems to dull. Plan js to add a SFA someday. Love GB.
I got my first 17 years ago, aged 14. Best investment ever, now have 5 of them. The Gransfors Sharpening stone is awesome btw!

Bought one of those axes forever ago and it’s one of the best things I have ever purchased. Weatherling (spelt wrong) is also equally good. I have one each in different sizes. Love love love. My small forest axe is my pride and joy. pS, it keeps that shaving edge and easy to sharpen somehow. Now I want that wrecking bar.
Also linseed oil that handle. Once day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year and yearly after (or as much as you can). One of the few axes not shipped with a varnished handle…… thank god.
The BLO will make a durable and grippy surface if you give it that first bit of love before you get all your daily grease inside it.
I have two of their axes. I relied on them multiple winters to stay warm. Some of my absolute favorite possessions
I found an old gransfors bruks hatchet in with my grandpas tools, I think he got the axe from a friend who passed. Either way it’s an incredible hatchet and the makers mark is KS which is my initials. Great stuff! Get a few swings in on some scraggly little invasive tree, you will be filled with joy.
Best bars on the planet! Available Lee Valley Tool. My small one has served me for decades. Sturdy enough for serious destruction and refined enough for fine molding removal. The large one well ya gotta have the large one!

I have several GB axes. They are art. One of my faves is the small hatchet. It is awesome for yard work.

That is one of the best axes made today. From the shape and design of the head and the handle to the materials and craftsmanship. I like the smaller version for shaping material for camp craft and carving (like spoons). Thanks for sharing.
I got my small forest axe when I was doing wildland firefighting. Gransfors bruk is one of maybe 2 of the top tier axe makers in the world. The other being hults bruk. The pair of them are currently unrivaled in their field. Absolutely beautiful axes and a quality rarely seen these days
Brand names you cherish and pray to survive whatever obstacles they face. Economic, obsolescence or etc...
I plan to buy small collection of top tier axes and especially from those Swedish companies you mentioned but also an axe from Council Tool. Support the American made as well. Are there other American made axe brand names that are considered more upper echelon than a local hardware store special?
@@gscotty311well, if you are buying council tool, then the Camp Carver is a must. But there aren't a whole lot of high quality axes made in america anymore. Older axe heads are a different story.

First of all, congrats on a beautiful axe. Being from Norway, I'm familiar with "Swedish Blue." It appears on beer labels and clothing, and is a deeply embedded color in Swedish culture.

Gransfors Bruk by far makes the best axes in the world. I have this one along with 4 of their other axes. They are a lifetime tool. I immediately recognized this one from the video thumbnail. Rub the handle down with boiled linseed oil from time to time and you’ll have a top tier axe for the rest of your life!
Beautiful Blue that makes it easy to see if you lay it down in the grass, the dry leaves, or amongst the boards you just "Wrecking Bar'd".

Always wanted these but have been rocking a Marbles camp axe for the past few years. Extremely cheap but sharpens nicely and has done the things I need it to. A Gransfors Bruks is definitely on my bucket list
