- How many surfaces can a bullet hit and still be dangerous at the same speed? Could the bullet bounce back to the person who fired it?
Using science as a tool, Hollywood special effects experts attempt to debunk rumours, urban legends and popular myths that have captivated the minds of many individuals.

Finally the narrator in surround sound. They let him out of the room to the left
No they just got another one who speaks in random on the right and behind you
Lol I love that we have shared RUclips upload specific moments
lol
I kind of miss the idea of the narrator hugging me from behind whispering in my left ear
😂@@jaedonthompson2219
The way Adam pauses before saying "I bet you can't" like it took him a second to realize what Jaime was saying, and then quickly trying to calculate if he could.
i dont think the pause was him realizing what jamie said. i think the pause was "do i call him out on camera or let it slide?"
@@zevo9314 Well I agree way more with the second part of the comment because I get the same look when doing quick math in my head. May as well say "Processing please wait"
(edit) Also when right after the Narrator then said "But the challenge is out there" I fully expected them to be at one of those carnival games that ask you to guess your pitch speed.
@@ku8721 I imagine there was a myth where they had to test their pitch speed at some point. We will eventually find it and see if Jamie was right
@@potatosordfighter666 If you find Jamie Hyneman's top speed pitch I'll pay you $10
BUT it has to be documented! If there is no video, photo or believable written proof then no pay out!!!

EDIT: You have one week from today to claim that prize!!!!

I didn’t know mythbusters uploaded full episodes.
I’m so incredibly happy this showed up in my recommended.

yup. beats having to pay for it on hulu or some shit

I want the cutout of Jamie holding the gun so bad
Just put it in the passenger seat right behind the driver seat, slightly to the side while you've got a surprised face while you're speeding through traffic.
I'd put one in every window of my house.
In the passenger seat behind the driver's seat? Wtf?
RIP Jessi And Grant. I was watching these episodes the other day and found out Jessi passed in 2019... not to be insensitve, but going out at 522.7mph is badass and wont be broken for a long time
If you guys are releasing every episode in full, thats awesome for getting kids in science. I bought every season on Amazon so of course this would happen, but I'd rather a show like this be available to the public.
I don't know if this is going to be fully all episodes. Also, not all episodes are avaliable to the public. In the US, I can't access most of it, but that's probably because it's from BBC.
@@GiggiliGaiX3 This isn't from the BBC. The BBC versions of Mythbuster Episodes have a Brittish narrator and often entirely different jokes (made by the narrator). This is the oregional US version of the show. Mythbusters is not nor was it ever a BBC program.
@@MeepChangelingthere are some episodes on RUclips with a BBC logo on the top left with the American narrator just like these episodes. I think the ones I’ve seen like that were pretty early episodes so maybe they didn’t bring in British narrator early on until they realized it was gonna make it more than a season or two.

Not questioning why Jamie has a sabot for 45 that fits those specific ball bearings. No questions.
One does not question the Hyneman.
Man, they were really cranking that tree without eye or head protection and just barehanding those lead plates.

So excited to see that they're uploading full episodes for free. And judging by the 25+ currently unlisted videos in each of the 3 season playlists, they won't be stopping anytime soon! This is really bringing me back to the good old days and my favorite routine after coming home from middle school: a glass of milk, a stack of cookies, and Mythbusters re-runs on the DVR. Good times :)
And of course, RIP Grant. Brilliant, charming, funny, innovative, just a wonderful human taken way too soon. But his memory will never die thanks to this amazing show and his legacy of inspiring kids to pursue STEM careers
I think the blonde girl is the girl who died about 5 years back doing a landspeed run
I used to watch this on the Discovery channel after school, my parents were strict so this was one of the few shows we got to watch without supervision. Brings back a lot of memories. ❤
im so happy these are all coming to RUclips
40 years of studying medieval history. Pine trees? Catapults: yes. Trebuchets: yes. Pine trees?
They're American, you can forgive them. They never had a Medieval Age.
In fairness, catapults and trebuchets require open and at least mostly relatively flat terrain in order to be brought in and used, so there are some potential scenarios where they could not be brought in and so something had to be improvised to their effect.
Then again, I'm not exactly an expert on medieval history, so I am unaware of any castles - or just any fortified place that could warrant a catapult or trebuchet - located in or near enough a forest of pine trees. I imagine that as much as such a location could provide some decent protection from seige weapons, I bet it would also make it easier to sneak up to and the into/past the walls.
I don't know. Like I said, I'm not an expert on the subject, so I could just be blowing smoke.
@@Metylaner True, but they did have forts scattered around in the colonial days, and cannons face many of the same problems as catapults and trebuchets. Still, see my other post for the "on the other hand."
it's too bad they apparently never actually LOOKED at a Trebuchet.
I was thinking the same thing. It was mostly done with a trebuchet and dead rotting animal carcasses
Believe it or not, this was peak television.
It's still peak television. From the era before David Zaslov ruined everything
This show was my entire childhood. This show taught me so many things that people thought I was smart but no, I just watched this show. And learned a lot.
6:03 there's actually an old police training video that explains this phenomenon pretty well. It instructed officers not to take cover behind cars in between the wheels, because of a suspect fired at the ground in front of the car, the rounds would skim along the ground and hit the person hiding behind the vehicle in the legs. Same guess for standing right next to a wall or peeking out from around the end of one; a round that strikes that wall will skim down the wall and hit you in the face, Rather than ricochet off at the same angle it hit the wall at.
All because of the deformation of the bullet.
Matt over at Demo Ranch did a remarkably good job at both the ricocheting bullet and the bullet in the pipe thing....
A lot of his videos are myth busting gun myths without the insurance
He is allowed to do whatever he wants. Mythbusters have people above them, looking over their shoulders and telling them what they can/can’t do
These uploads are amazing! Like a lot of people my age, I grew up with this show, and as I got older, it was the only TV I was ever interested in watching. The memories of Mythbusters are a major part of my life and it brings me so much joy to relive them.
I couldn’t be happier that these are posted as full episodes, thankyou so very much

It's execution was simply expedited.
As an arborist, the lack of safety gear around trees and winches is painful to watch 😱🤭😊
I remember watching this episode way back in 2010 when i was finishing my last year of vocational school in metal industries. This season 7 onwards reminds me of a freedom from awful, awful school and happier time.
I appreciate so much these uploads !
Hahaha Adam calling Jaime out that he can't throw a 72 mph ball is hilarious
I am living for that tunic hoodie Jamie was wearing
IKR, it seems like a fantastic garment and he seems to get a lot of use out of it.
I think it is a custom/home made welding vest, to protect from spatter. It is thin leather and would not be hard to replicate for a good tailor.
It's a little crazy to see two people who would go on to die tragically in just a few years from this episode, in the same frame, alive and energetic. Like some kind of surreal preservation of their life.
I remember this episode, a classic
I laughed way harder than I should have at "tree hugger". lol
these 2 myths are outright fun to watch . over the years mythbusters took on some great myths that sort of self busted the dead body one was just that but they had a bunch of fun taking it on . the 360 ricochet myth was one of those movie myths that had a maybe sense to it an when adam an jamie took it on i was very glad they did . rest in peace Grant an Jessi
Its nice to be able to support mythbusters official channel. No more needing to support random people uploading episodes
Thank you Banijay Ent. for releasing all those episodes at the maximum quality possible.
For those who have already watched them in the past
This is actually worth re watching because this is a slightly different and longer edit than the original Discovery TV one.
Clearly the episodes were edited to 42 minutes in order to fit the 1 hour slot with 18 minutes of commercials.
It looks like there was some extra meat in the episodes , and this is why it's now closer to 50 minutes. Very cool
one of the greatest shows, thank you
@10:10 Jamie got shot on the finger that he occasionally uses to advise motorist 😂😂😂
There is a reason the eye protection you wear at a gun range is just hard plastic. You're eyes are the only thing soft enough for a ricochet to really do anything to. I've even had a round hit me off of a plate and the only reason it really hurt was because of how hot the metal was. A bigger round might do more, but a handgun round just doesn't have enough energy. (Unless you are doing something really weird/dangerous. Then the ricochet is the least of your worries.)
Conifer Catapults are awesome. People still use them when up to mischief. But hurling plague corpses? The stories about lobbing plague victims over walls arose from a siege in 1346. The Golden Horde army (Mongols) _was laying siege to Caffa, a Genoese trading center on the Crimean Peninsula. But as Janibeg, the ruler of the Golden Horde, waited for Caffa to surrender, his fighters began to succumb to a mysterious ailment. "It was as though arrows were raining down from heaven to strike and crush the Mongols", a notary from the city of Piacenza in present-day Italy wrote. According to the 14th century account, the beleaguered Mongol commanders had one final move: to hurl their plague dead over the fortress walls."_ Brutal.
the danger in ricochet actually comes from the cratering of targets that are both too soft and too close to the shooter, essentially boomeranging the bullet (or large enough fragments of it) directly back. Higher energy rounds like from a rifle will absolutely ricochet back off of mild steel instead of shattering. Interesting that they used a .45 for this as well since that's a large, heavy subsonic bullet so there isn't much energy to lose from the jump. Using a 5.56 or even a 7.62x51 would have been fun to see!
Seeing this ricochet myth retested with something like 9mm or something faster and using a brass or copper solid would be awesome. Someone should make that video
I was wondering why they would opt for a heavier slower bullet like .45.
I also thought it would be interesting to see an airgun using alloy pellets.. something in the big bore territory.. but whatever
@verynefarious solid ammunition is made to not deform like lead or lead core ammo. When you want a ricochet copper or brass solids are the go to. Watch any demo ranch or Kentucky ballistics video about ricochets. Flat nose projectiles are actually made to go straight through a target, not tumbling whatsoever. Which are mostly made normally with copper jacket and lead core.
Classic animation error of showing the whole cartridge case flying around and not the bullet.
Not to disparage, Mythbusters will always be great!
yeah i think they prolly knew that but its not supposed to be relistic
There’s another episode where they die that same thing.
Point is, why should they dismantle a bullet to show what they mean with that tiny thing between his fingers? Its way more understandable this way
@@tenebrarum6039 I think you missed what he was saying, they had an animation of a bullet bouncing around on the metal beams and in that animation they showed a cartidge instead of just the bullet like at 26:40.
Fun fact, I happen to know that this is due to special restrictions on firearm violence in animation and gaming. You can't show a bullet, however, you CAN show the full cartridge to avoid the restriction
like thanks giving marathon anytime
Okay, don't get your panties in a bunch, I am a BIG fan of Myth Busters. I mean, how can you NOT love a show whose basic premise is blowy-uppy?
HOWEVER, there are SOOOOOO many things wrong with their so-called scientific methodology.
In the first myth, Jamie and Adam are far too focused on the projectile, and not at all on the possible (even probable) inaccuracies of the base myth.
As a veteran and a mechanic, i have seen mechanical objects/devices perform some absolutely MIRACULOUS events.
Their second mistake is having such a compact bench test. They are literally firing from point-blank range. What was there FIRST mistake? Assuming the points of ricochet HAD to be ONLY 4, and that at 90° to each other. After all, who's firing steel ball bearings out of their pistol, other than these 2 knuckleheads?
It is far more likely that there were multiple (as in more than 4) points of contact, with far lower angles of attack, which would greatly reduce the loss of momentum at each point, and (thus) greatly reduce the deformation of the projectile.
In the second myth, the item which comes BLARINGLY to mind, is the simple fact of HANDLING A DISEASED CORPSE. Medicine and understanding of disease was HIGHLY misunderstood a thousand years ago, and they certainly had no realistic means of proecting themselves from contagion like bubonic plague. How would they manage to get a diseased corpse loaded, without risking contamination of the loaders?
Just as in recent events, people were absolutely TERRIFIED of disease. Especially one that killed half the population of Europe. If i were an enlisted man back then, and threatened with death by execution or chancing a slow, torturous death by plague? Id take the quick execution.
Conifer catapult might work if you construct more of a slingshot using two trees, you get double the amount of spring, but are at the mercy of luck... if no pair of sufficiently similar trees are so positioned as to make the slingshot viable, it simply won't work.
However... might be more effective to simply cut down the tree and use it to build a conventional siege engine.
I also somehow doubt that any sane general would have commanded his soldiers to physically handle a corpse infected with smallpox or various other diseases. Might have launched bodies (without smallpox or other), or parts of bodies into the castle and this would have roughly the desired effect of spreading disease.
In WWII the Germans had an attachment for their rifles that allowed them to shoot around corners without exposing themselves to return fire. If I understand correctly they were developed for use by tankers to shoot at people who got close to the tanks without exposing themselves to enemy fire. They were awkward to use from a tank and not super effective because of fragmentation of the bullet but they did work and saw some use in urban fighting. They were called the Krummlauf. They came in 30-, 45-, 60-, and even a 90 degree version. They weren’t good for very many shots with the higher the angle the quicker it would wear out and the more the bullets would break up and deform but they did work.
It wasnt attachment it was the barrel.
iirc the Mythbusters had another episode about that! it was mostly about cartoon characters bending a gun to shoot their wielder, but they did mention the krummlauf!
It was called the Krumlauf. Krum means bent, lauf means barrel, so bent-barrel. Only the 30 degree version sort of worked, but mostly the bullet would disintegrate from the forces. The sharper angles would all blow through in one, or several shots. It never really went anywhere.
The modern version is the Cornershot, which allows you to shoot a pistol around a corner.
Soon as the lead bullet failed, my first thought was "brass solid". Though to be fair, 3 tests later they did get to the hardened steel ball bearing which is better than the brass solid.
Can you upload the Shop till you Drop special? That's one of the few episodes that can't be bought digitally.
Hmm, don't like how they discounted the steel bounce by bouncing off a thick steel plate. It's definitely mechanically significantly different to an I beam as on construction sites, especially under load.
Thanks appreciate when its in HD and the audio isn't in my left ear
I've never heard the pine-tree catapult-myth in relation to the Middle Ages. I would think they had access to an actual catapult more often than a conveniently placed tree. This is much more of a cartoon-trope in my mind
I somehow never saw this episode and the biggest thing blowing my mind was that forklift with the mecanum wheels
The bullet myth is amazing, so funny nowadays youtuber are doing this and even more stuff.
Imagine if that line snapped 😳 im glad it didnt but its a real possibility
if only mythbusters had the high speed cams of today
Castle defender #1: "What are those guys doing with that tree?"
Castle defender #2: "Who cares, I want to know why our archers aren't pepper potting them with arrows!"
* And......! The tree benders are dead.*
That ricochet bullet myth remembers me of a forensic files episode (called "the magic bullet") where a distracted projectile killed a boy near a shooting range hitting 4 intermediate targets. Sad story.
I never realized it at the time but they were way more confident in the build quality of a shipping container than they should have been. Shooting guns, setting off a scuba tank and launching a rocket in the shop inside of one to name a few.
Im pretty sure they reinforced it.. they added a window to it obviously but Adam did call it their bunker.
Don't forget that for something like 3 or 4 full seasons they were using a lexan that was absolutely NOT bullet resistant. I forget exactly the episode it was that they realized how useless it was for what they were doing, but I want to say it was about the time they started bringing in Frank Doyle or JD Nelson.
When i was a kid we used fir to make our lobster traps...fir is strong but bends well.
Myth busters is fun!
The cartridge in the animation 😂
Love this
The tree catapult one is kinda silly. Any castles and such would have a good distance cleared out around it, making it highly unlikely for any trees tall enough to be in range, even if it were to launch a moderate distance.
That's why you don't stand right against the wall when the shooting starts. Well documented.
For the bouncing off walls, the specs of the actual gun on the steel plates is like a cannon sticking in a room firing at the first wall. but i get that they couldnt make a small good substitute for a gun/bullet.
The whole cartridge lol
god i miss this show, good times
Since when was my favorite show of all time on RUclips to watch for free???
Anyone else pick up the "According to Jim" reference while they were at the tree farm? It was subtle but you had to know it was another sitcom that was being aired while this show was.
They tethered the tree too close to vertical, the elasticity of the rope allowed the tree to release the dummy at a nearly horizontal angle
My childhood has returned
Fun Fact .... The bullet never touches the wall of the pipe, so you could wrap that pipe in several 360 degree loops ... but there is a limit. It's called velocity and inertia vs. distance and time. The faster an object travels plus the energy carried behind it means the longer the distance and time that is necessary for that object to naturally use friction from surface air resistance to mitigate direction of travel ..... like skipping a rock off water, or a meteor off the earths' atmosphere.
duh.
41:44 every pierced person rn:
"surely I can shove this into my septum (ect. )"
Watching this episode and growing up and then visiting Asia made me realize that "catapult" thing can be plausible. I've seen Asian men in the coconut industry climb and saw very tall coconut trees on the top and make that coconut tree swing like crazy.
European trees don't bend like coconut trees, they're very different plants. The myth is partly true: they did fling bodies over castle walls back in the day but with a catapult or trebuchet. The tree part is the myth.
The puns on this episode by the narrator were golden
Ricochets don't travel in 45 degree angles, they tend to follow the line of the surface that has been struck.
I don’t remember the initial angle but I think it was like 40 degree angle with a shotgun at a hard surface like concrete or black top is supposed to give you a ricochet of 20 degrees. This will allow you to hit someone hiding behind a car above the ankles which will cause the hidden person to move to where you have a better shot at them.
would like to see more typical farm videos
reminds me of demo ranch's stupid metal pipes rerouting the bullet path. and it worked.
aw man right in the feels. i miss having grant and jessi on the show. rip
steel core? maybe they can't get them where they are.
A few guns with curved barrels were actually made, so they could shoot around corners. Not that curved, of course😅
They didn't get used much, though, because a lot of the time, the bullets would end up eviscerated, and the pieces that came out the end were too slow and small to hurt anyone
46:48 One word: Warwolf
Grant and Jessi deserve to have the hard work they put into this show available for free. They were fantastic for this show and gave us a much needed break from the Jamie Adam situation which became weird at one point. Thank you for posting these

Tree myth could've worked better if they only flung a torso, or maybe just the limbs and head?
I think i can I think I can
6:22 maybe a brass solid round would work better than lead.
Anyone notice that every ten pounds of resistance on the trees gave a foot of extra distance?
I think to get maximum ricochet you should use what they use on the top of anvils and shoot the steel ball that will definitely retain fatal speeds on the return to the shooter
You could obviously do some tillering to the tree. 🌲
Hehe he hit the back wall lol
Never say I cant .... Because that motivates me to do...
All the tree gods have left is one mythbuster to take out they already got brain blast boy and wreck it girl.
lol holy shit
Gotta say hardball 9mm with a heavy powder load wouldve probably been a better choice for testing the ricochet myth
So, yall just going to keep assuming this is a 360° rotation?
It's not. It's 270°.
