I work for a tow truck company, working on one ofour major motorways. We were called out to an accident involving 2 artic lorrys. Traffic had stopped and one artic smashed into the rear of the stopped artic. When we arrived it just looked like another accident, both of the lorry drivers were injured but ok. The emergency departments were happy for us to do our thing and remove the lorrys. No matter how we pulled the lorrys would not move apart. After clammering under the lorrys we found a sports car imbedded into the front of the lorry that hit the stationary lorry, the car had travelled upwards into the engine compartment, and over the rear axle of the other lorry making it invisible in the wreckage. We had to unhitch the trailers, then lift the 2 lorry cabs (still stuck together) on to a low boy to be taken to a police compound, where they had to cut the lorrys apart to retrieve the sports car. Unfortunately the young driver and his girlfriend did not survive. In 22 years of road recovery, I have only had to untangle 6 lorry accidents, of these their was 7 fatalities, yes in a head on, the tangled mess of metal does fuse together
@@crudboy12 It has probably happened a few times in history, lots of vehicles on the road, plenty of accidents, some percentage would have those kinds of results. Yeah, I think trucks can get tangled together, but not fused. My Dad drove in Demolition Derbys for years and some cars got stuck together even at those speeds. But if bullets don't "fuse" with the metal objects they hit, I don't think a harder metal at a lower speed could do it.

I had one as a kid. Still want to buy a collector one, as an adult with money. Dude said it had been sitting in driveway for 5 years. Bad neighbor, and bad car guy.
Sadly, i saw a LOT of cars crushed between trucks over the years since that episode aired for the first time. Mostly in the news when a truck crashed into a traffic jam and a car had the bad luck of being the "last in the line" with a truck in front of it. And the most of the times, it was lethal for the driver of the car.
I can't tell you how much traffic I've run on this Compact-Compact story! The welding together is completely forgotten. It's the; "How to time the tow trucks so the semi trucks hit at the same time!" It's really simple. I'm surprised the Mythbusters missed it. You attach the two cables together with a shackle to a pulley. Attach one end of a double strength cable to one tow truck. Pass it through the pulley then attach the other end to the other tow truck. Now the trucks can vary some and the; pulley, long cables, and two semis are drawn at the same speed as one assembly.
I actually had a family friend's son, go through an accident just like this. Instead, he was rear-ended into another semi. His car was unrecognizable, and ironically he is a paramedic. He's lucky to be alive. I dont remember the full story as it was third hand information by the time it was told to me.
The calculations they must have performed, just to figure out if one tow truck had the torque and power to pull two semis with attached trailers at a high rate of speed, had to be monumental.
I was in my BMW for a very similar rear end collision. The damage looked about the same. I was waiting for traffic with a smoke, and my lighter ready. I looked in the rear view because I was thinking of changing my mind. Here comes a truck. I made my peace with myself in that moment because I thought I was a dead man. The car went about 100 feet. I looked over and the truck went through a ditch, up a grassy knoll, and tipped over as the driver dove out and ran. I got out of my car, went across the road and lit my cigarette. The paramedics thought I was in shock because I was so calm about it. The driver's seat had twisted from the force of my body in the impact. I've had a screwed spine ever since, but I'm still here with minimal damage.
