He was the One player Sir Alex Ferguson Feared

- Peter Schmeichel has talked about how in the 1990s, there was one premier league attacker that Sir Alex Ferguson would focus on more than any ever others in his Manchester United team talks and meetings.
A scarily skilled dribbler of the ball, Steve Mcmanaman thrilled spectators up and down England with Liverpool, before moving to Spain and enjoying stunning success with Real Madrid.

Truly underrated player, the fact England stopped picking him while he was at Madrid was madness
Probably a political decision. To discourage good players from moving abroad.
Did they? he was constantly injured
They weren't picking him when he played his best years at Liverpool too. Thank Glen Hoddle for that.
I was gonna comment this exact words of the original comment. It's criminal he wasn't in the England team more. Same with Matt LeTissier one of the most technically gifted players in the history of the British game, but chose to stay at Southampton his whole career instead of a bigger club so only won 8 England caps.
He played in Euro 2000 for England as a Real Madrid player.
Macca will always be a legend for us Madridistas. We have a soft spot for those that play for the crest and know their role on the team, no matter how big or small, is crucial for success.
A good example of this today is Nacho if you want a "similar-ish" comparison. Macca was an absolute beast on the ball and he is genuinely adored at the Bernabeu, thank you Liverpool for him!
Here here underated to the max absolutely brilliant player never ever gave up🏆
Broke my heart when and how Macca left.
Likewise.
Yeah, was happy for him at the time but it still felt like a gut punch.
Same.
People forget about Macca. In the 90's he was a superstar in the league. So technically gifted for an English player. It's bizarre that he went to Real Madrid of all teams and won two champions leagues and it's not really talked about. Everyone just assumes he went there and sat on the bench for years but he was a star there. The fans still love him to this day. When Roy Evans was playing his 5 3 2 formation with Macca as the 10 he was amazing. As a Liverpool fan whenever he got the ball you just knew he was going to go past a pack of players. I always have a big what if with Liverpool back then. So many home grown stars and young players with potential signed. I always think what if in 2000 we have a healthy Rob Jones, Jamie Rednkapp, Owen and Fowler. Four careers that could have been drastically different had it not been for injuries. And Macca never leaves and Gerrard shows up. And throw Carra in there too why not 🤣
"so technically gifted for an English player", what does that mean? (it's rhetorical, I know what you mean, and it's dogwater)
@@mojebi3804 Yeah dude you know 🤣 it was a different time 😂back then and moving forward maybe ten or fifteen years it wasn't cool to be a Zola or a Cantona if you were English. Le Tissier and Joe Cole can attest to that. Hoddle can chime in way before in his day. Gazza was the only one we really tried to build a team around but he was undeniable.
Macca was world class for us mate.
Macca scored an absolute screamer in the champions league final. Legend.
Honestly I think he was just ahead of his time. He was a sophisticated, graceful player and a more sophisticated cultures man overall - in times when Stuart Pierce, Paul Ince, Shearer and Batty were the standard mould of English footballer.
@@mojebi3804It means in that in the 90s England had few world class technicians. Macca and Gazza were the only ones.
Macca was also an icon at Real Madrid, despite mostly coming off the bench.
Just insane workrate, passion, attitude, mental strength and just had that intangible “it” that the Bernabeu loved.
Grande Macca!
What on earth is an 'it'?
Focus on the word before "it" and you'll have your answer
It doesn't make sense. 'It' is not an adjective. Being 'it' means absolutely nothing.@@shugmchugh5107
@@thejudge-kv2jk something very special. AKA x factor.
@@thejudge-kv2jk Macca was just cool, very likeable, and did not seem fake, like Beckham. He fully embraced living in Spain and connecting with Spanish culture during his time in Madrid and made an effort to learn the local language, something that a lot of English players playing abroad don’t do. The Madridistas appreciated that in addition to his 100% commitment on the pitch.
Strange that you don't hear this man talked up often. I think this is the first video I've seen about McManaman. Severely underrated and is still seen as a Real Madrid legend to this day. Baller.
I think its the stats, and the constant threat of messi and ronaldo fanboys jumping in every conversation about football and derailing it with "x Is ThE gOaT."
Macca was a GREAT player on his day ... but he was also capable of disappearing for multiple games at a time.
And that was Liverpool's greatest enemy in the 90s ... consistency.
There were a couple of seasons during the mid 1990's where Liverpool had the best team in the league, but that means nothing if you don't turn up for one out of every three games. Liverpool players just couldn't seem to focus on the big prize on the horizon. United could do that. Win game after game, pile on the points, keep their eye and mind on the long haul ... but all the Liverpol players, INCLUDING Macca, just didn't have that discipline. They would win a huge fixture and have all the newspapers praise them ... then 7 days later a ragged Wimbledon side would beat them 1-0 ... and players like Macca would look uninterested. It was a very frustrating era.
Yeah, the 90s was rough. I always felt like they were just enjoying their football and didn't really care about anything else.
Man utd in comparison were all business all of the time.
It's crazy how relatively forgotten he is, one of the most accomplished careers in English football
He's on TV every week.
Always enjoy your stories. Macca leyenda del Real Madrid ❤
Thanks very much Pal! Glad you enjoy the vids :)
@@flashbackfootball1367 Honest, your vids are pure pure joy and I’ve learned loads. I’m always gassed for the next one. So at the risk of sounding cringe, just’d like to say thanks mate, for sharing your knowledge, insight and enthusiasm 🍻
Not cringe at all, comments like that are amazing to receive. I'm just a random guy making vids about what I love so its motivational to know folk like yourself really enjoy them!
It's disappointing that you didn't mention one of the greatest man marking performances possibly of all time in Roy Keane's MOTM display against Mcmanaman in the FA cup final of 1996. The previous year saw Sir Alex Ferguson express anger with Paul Ince's performance at marking Mcmanaman and when the two teams met in the FA cup final Eric Cantona persuaded Sir Alex Ferguson to stick Keane on Mcmanaman. Keane stopped Liverpool's attacks virtually on his own and never let Mcmanaman have a moment to breathe. It's a compliment to both players that their battle went a long way to deciding the game.
Macca was my favourite player at the time!
The fact ppl actually thought Beckham was better than macca is fkin mental this lad could do anything if he was Brazilian the world would go mental
I could actually understand why Hoddle would pick Beckham over McManaman:
1. I think McManaman disagreed with Hoddle on a couple things, including his whole shaman shtick.
2. Beckham had great chemistry with people and was well-received generally (most of whom, Hoddle).
3. Beckham showed that he was a dedicated team player both on the pitch and in training, especially in terms of defensive cover.
4. Hoddle’s tendency not to pick luxury players. Le Tissier would have been a phenomenal super-sub if he had been picked more often. I think it’s the same with McManaman.
5. The National Team didn’t favor an intricate, well-knit, short passing system, which would have fit him much better at the time.
6. Sponsors becoming incredibly powerful.
He'd be a much better fit in todays game which is much less focused on crossing, and more about space and close passing. Pep would love him.
Remember those flying goals he scored for RM, legendary - one of the best players in Europe at the time.
Steve Mcmanman is the best
My favorite player after Fowler 🤟
Fabulous player for us, and without question our player of the decade (sorry God). I'd also put Macca in our Premier League era best XI.
Something to ponder, I was so gutted when he left but would he be in my best team in my life time?
one of my favorite players at Real back then
I would have thought that the player was Robbie Fowler. He was an absolute goal machine.
I still am I lost how Fowler was sold? No disrespect to God but being nicknamed after the Heavenly Father is no small compliment. Maybe God wasn't happy? Don't take his name in vain!
SM and Gascoigne were superb in 1996
He was the first Liverpool player I loved. Boss player him.
I saw McManaman countless times for Liverpool back in the 1990s. He was a joy to watch along with Robbie Fowler. Sadly, as usual many England managers were not interested in talented players. Shame Terry Venables didn't stay on until 1998.
He was underated no one speaks about him
I was always Macca in the playground. What a player!
My favourite player
Great player
just want to say something no ones picked up on here = he's so underrated and his combination with fowler was lethal
Not really underrated, I've been angry when Judas Owen left but never once cried like after Macca. I'm still sad we lost him but happy he won so much. Owen, haha, I enjoy his failures, he had a chance to return and chosen NUFC then MUFC, once a manc never a red.
Subbed just for the love ya put into this. Well done lad ❤
My favourite player he was amazing
Watching him back then, he reminded me so much of Beardsley, whom Souness had let go from Liverpool. I can only imagine how much more Macca would have grown having Beardsley in the same side. Letting some of Dalglish's players leave, I feel to stamp his own print on Liverpool, cost Souness, and young lads like Macca that came through.
Macca would have shined regardless, but why sell Beardsley to rivals? From Souness comments on Barnes attitude, and Barnes own attitude in public, in hindsight, Barnes should have gone. I know a legend but what if huh!
That guy should have been in the England's starting 11. Even Ferggie was afraid of what he was capable of.
He was so good he went from LFC to Real Madrid, you’ve got to be good to get on that bus!
As a liverpool fan i was pretty bitter when he left us for free. I always felt not getting a proper fee for Owen and no money for Macca set us back as were were not able to replace either of them with players of a similar level of quality. It hurt as a fan because at the time it told me they did not respect the club or the fans who had put them where they were, only their own personal careers/achievements. I still believe this. However watching this made me remember what a player he could be on his day and why i was so gutted when he chose to pursue his career at a bigger club leaving us to 20 years of mediocrity.
from what I remember the club fucked him over and tried to sell him to Barcelona without even telling him.
@@thetopfootycoach Yeah you could be right, it was a long time ago and I was in my teens. Also if you take the emotion of being a fan out of it you have to remember these players are doing a job to pay their bills and feed their kids. Let's be fair if someone offers me a better job or more money I'm not stopping to think about the share holders or what I owe to my current boss. I'm taking that promotion brother.😂😂😂
From the man himself, the player that Ferguson feared the most was Raúl. And he didn’t even played in the PL 😅
When I was a kid at school the footballing debates were about who was better; Giggs or McManaman
I often wondered how England would’ve done at WC 2002 and Euro 2004 if Sven had selected him for those squads?
Well , he was a brilliant player !!
*Where is macca currently...?! D unstoppable winger in his era. One of best winger in 90's...*
He was a typical Fergie player - as well as being skilful, creative and full of energy in his younger days, he was wiry and lean.
Fergie had a thing about weight, which he was correct about, only signing or picking players who didn’t carry any excess body fat.
He used to assess the parents of prospective signings to see if they were genetically disposed to gaining weight. True story.
The one exception he made was Rooney, because he was so exceptional at a young age.
Fergie’s typical players were all lean - Keane, Giggs, Sharpe, Sheringham, Van Persie etc.
He also made an exception for Bruce because of his experience, and Cantona at the end of his career because he was so still so influential.
When you say he was known to be something of a practical joker, I presume you mean Hoddle for not selecting him.
Criminally underrated player. Remeber euro 96 where he was untouchable and whilst at Real for some bizarre reason the English press didn’t take him seriously like he wasn’t as good as the other Gallacticos yet when the likes of Zidan and R9 Ronaldo etc are asked about him they consider him integral to that team
he was liverpool's zidane at that time.
Should be talked about in the same way Gareth Bale is now.
9:43 best goal he ever scored
Absolutely agree …..Macca was a world great at Madrid ….
Mc manaman was world class
always luv him at Liverpool .... I got no issues with him moving to Madrid .... we are shit under Souness and Evans
Totally underrated scored a class goal against Celtic
I was just thinking about that goal, I was quite drunk at the time but his goal sobered me up lol
My gran could score against Celtic.
@@jaycarrUK a blind man on a galloping horse in the fog could score against Celtic so while what your saying is possibly true you still can't deny it was a good goal probably not as good as your grans goal but still good nonetheless
Shaggy was a brilliant player, unfortunately in poor Liverpool sides in his time in a red shirt.
I think many reds forget how good he actually was.
Should’ve had many more caps for England.. I’m a Utd fan but have respect for the individual Liverpool players..
Unfortunately Eriksen was hell bent on making Scholes, Gerard, Beckham and Lampard work in a 4-4-2..
I totally forget all about macca when remembering the past greats . Was he one of the first Englishmen to play for real Madrid ?
If Shaggy could shoot, I mean really shoot, he would’ve been the best player in the world.
Throughout his time at Liverpool, I actually thought he was fairly overrated tbh. A decent dribbler of the ball, but that's all I saw in him. It was when he left Liverpool and joined Real Madrid that I saw a different side to his game.
Agree. Overrated but better at RM
David Hirst too.
Underrated, Understated, Under-utilised
macca had more skills than giggs but gigs had more athleticism and some skills combined making them both amazing players
England has always had terrible habit of ignoring their best English player for the national team. Glenn Hoddle, Matt Le Tisser, and Steve McManaman.
Slippy G
Nah, he's just a mercenary and doesn't tell the truth about why he left us. He blames Liverpool for acting too slowly.....in contrast, Robbie didn't even read his contract....he just signed it because he loved the club.
@@sleepingwarrior4618”mercenary”? Come on now Liverpool were a mess back then and practically every player dreams of playing for Madrid
He was one the bench
@@sargonsblackgrandfather2072 We won the League Cup in 94 and McManaman scored twice. We were usually top 5 and always capable of more. We were not a mess. We just didn't have the money to compete. The two are not the same thing.
Macca reminds me of many dribblers. He was a great player, but he had some stinkers. Dribblers who don't play themselves into the game, by passing the ball and getting the touch right. Macca used to dribble straight away and often lose it and then confidence goes and the more you try, the more it goes wrong. On his day a brilliant player.
I love Macca
The Nicole Kidman of football
Does anybody in Liverpool grow up a Liverpool supporter?
Because at that time.....Everton academy had better scouts.
And being Liverpool FC back then.....was like a poisoned chalice......
Sorry grahan1979. Do you know where he ended up?
Zola was the player Fergie feared. He’s said so himself.
If you saw Mcmananan’s performances for England post 96 you’d understand why he didn’t get much of a look in. He was abysmal
macmanan better then de jong frenkie, steven always went forward making the match so amazing!
The player Ferguson feared . . . .. Zola.
1:45 crazy that wasn't a penalty haha
Hes like tall coutinho
He was better than Giggs.
Much better
Did he score in a champions league final against valencia for real before ?
what do you mean?
He was better than giggs before giggs ..
gigs was a 50/50 skills and athletic ability. macca had to rely purely on skills and technique. macca was defo the more skilled out of the two but gigs athletic ability made up for it so i would say it's was a draw for both of them.
@@sf2explus184Giggs was a million times better then him! People used to be upset Giggs didn't choose England and Steve couldn't get in the team!
yh right macca was a fan favourite at madrid. you can't be a fan favourite without being good. also macca was a better passer and more gifted at setting up chances.@@dondamon4669
also instead of saying better explain how?@@dondamon4669
Yeah I'm sure he didn't fear messi
💯 😂
He played with R9.....
He's a gr8 player giggs
Unknown to many people nowadays simply for the facts:
-He had shaggy red hair
-he was skinny
-He wasn't considered goodlooking
-he was well behaved
-he didn't play for Man Utd
How Liverpool didn’t make the most of having ‘stars’ like McManaman and Fowler in the 90s, (not to mention other top class players), is an absolute disgrace.
The team had ‘bags of attacking flair’, but defensively, they were as brittle as balsa wood, with none more so than the pathetic keeper, ‘David ‘Calamity’ James.
Goals aren’t his job.
He wasn’t the striker.
Just a poor mans Jack Grealish
Behave
R9 was the player
Tactical masterclass in cup final was swap the flanks the winger is on because he suffered lol
PAYED? is that a new word? I always thought is was PAID.
Really?….. him? Ok he was a decent player, but he was hardly a world beater.
Ryan Giggs scored way more
He waighed under 60 kg. Could run like a kenyan. Sub 30 min for 6 miles is the rumours...
Pacey is not an attribute I'd use to describe Mcmanaman to be fair.
he was deceptively quick. Very different style from Owen which is explosive pace. Macca was also very very fit, covering more km in a game than most other players
I'm not saying he was slow. But he was more defined by being able to run with the ball close to his feet and technical ability than pace. Unlike Owen who always had a natural eye for goal but his game severely diminished once injuries paid to his pace. Two very different players. @@seancrowe3353
Criminally left out of 2002 World Cup England squad after a great season with Real Madrid.....Macca doesn't get his fair dues
"...after being dumped out by Bristol."
Show some respect.
Would you say after being dumped out by Manchester?
After being dumped out by Sheffield?
Yes, I use this phrase regularly in my videos
Cracking player but somewhat inconsistent. Steve McManaman is a prime example of why you don't build a team around one player if you want to be seriously successful at the top level.
Good dribbler but easy to deal with as seen in Liverpool European games where players had a bit more IQ.Liverpool was always the same.Pass sideways a lot, give it to barnes because he’s a “genius”he would pass it to stevie mac who would then try to dibble past everyone. No problem him beating people as long as you decided in which areas, you could always encourage him to beat you in a place that would run him up a blind alley where he could be dealt with.A dribble is only as good as the pass or shot at the end of it.Distinctly average at best for both.
Vivid memory of watching Liverpool v Celtic in the UEFA cup 1997 at Celtic park. Celtic 2-1 up near the end. McManaman got the ball in his own half anf I distinctly remember thinking “uh-oh”… he only dribbled to the end and scored 😆

Now theres a word you dont hear much in todays bland and boring fixtures. Dribble or dribbling, something that seems to have gone out of the game. Now we get this passing backwards and sideways sending us to sleep nonsense. Apart from my rant cheers for another good video. Never realised he did so well in spain.
I’m pretty sure SAF feared Thierry Henry as well.

Roy Evans wasn't Welsh
Yeah right enough, don't know what I read to make me write that.
I mean im a liverpool fan all my life but he wasnt Ginola good.
Payed…
Fergie feared many players, quotes from interviews over the years he would man mark certain players. Young Shearer, Cole, Bergkamp, Zola, Owen, Henry, Messi come to mind. Green army!!!!
Bit not mcManaman
Absolutely ridiculous!! All Ferguson did was make his players be aware of a speedy winger! Not ever in his books did Ferguson ever talk about Steve mcManaman! What someone utters in 5 seconds in a team talk is not enough to make a RUclips video about
