The more I see programs like this one, featuring a skeptic combatting magical thinking, I have to take my hat off.
Derren is basically telling and manipulating her what to draw and making all the suggestions of the drawings. He maybe spoke with them for 15 to 20 minutes. The cooked everything to 6:33 So we as audience on RUclips also will be amazed!
This was not made for RUclips, it was actually televised on Channel 4 here in the UK, the version you see here is the version we saw on Channel 4, but yes Derren spent more time with them than the edited version shows
He cooked them earlier and probably used subliminal messaging and or imagining that they just weren't consciously aware of. DANG!!!😯😲 crazy😃. Would be a powerful weapon to use on a mass scale. Oh wait 🤔
Derren never claims he does this for real. He tricked her into drawing what he wanted. That's his technique most of the time, i.e. talking people into doing what he wants without them realising

Derren Brown is so good at what he does, and his persona is very similar to that of James Bond - no, it's not because of his English accent. He's just so smooth and confident. He's very easy to watch.
+MarryJewana a fool and his money are soon parted. People are being taken by "legitimate" scams daily. Religion is the biggest money-making scam of all
+MarryJewana It's a complex issue. It is actually a crime in some states. It is also not specifically a crime in others. One issue that protects some 'psychics', 'mediums' and others is that they claim it was all just entertainment. Proving that to not be true is difficult especially if the scammer is careful about wording things. Some people have gone to jail or at least been fined for these kinds of frauds, but not as many as should be by far.
I love Derren's work. He's a logical thinker and a sceptic who highly enjoys bringing down these fakers and nutjobs with his mentalist abilities. He's always slated mediums and psychics and made the point that nobody is truly psychic in the way we understand the word - anyone can learn to do what he does which is essentially subliminally controlling one's mind so that they do what he wants them to do.
No that's just his way of story telling. It's all mentalism (pre-show, dual reality, and physically obtaining information). His story telling (that he uses some top secret mind manipulation) is made up and also sleightly ethically questionable, but it does more good than harm in my opinion.
Derren does not believe in subliminal messages and NLP. The "sail through the mind" is about creating a story for the viewer. He admits this kind of deception openly in his books. He is a showman, not a mentalist. Pen tracking is the real explanation. But the rest is valuable because of the psychological curiosities of interacting with these people.
Even mentalists do not do actual mentalism (like reading people) but normal magic under the disguise of psychic powers. There is some cold reading or hot reading sometimes but that is about it and not very accurate. I wonder how he did it but I am sure it is trick of some sorts not NLP.
DB does use the technology of NLP on occasion - such as "anchoring" a state of guilt in the episode where Jody confesses to an apparent murder that he didn't commit. On another occasion he used "mirroring" on a chap in a cafe and after giving him some suggestions had him shoplift from a shop in Tottenham Court Road...
Notice how for the 3rd image @4:38 he says "let different images SAIL through ur head" followed by "don't go OVERBOARD" then voila a yacht on water is drawn.....
That's just too helluva;) Joke aside, some people truly believe that these people are possessed by demons . The irony is that it's exactly the type beliefs that people like Derren a striving to abolish.
2:49 the thing is, there are far more sophisticated ways a scammer could have information passed on to them than an earpiece. A device connected to their leg that taps out Morse code, for example. I'm not saying that's what Derren's doing, his tricks are far more advanced and psychology-based than that. I'm just pointing out that just because a "psychic" says there's nothing in their ear, that does not mean they're not getting info some other way.
@@eliasbarboza9250 through words people can munipulate peoples reactions and imagary. Nothing psyhic about it. People get swayed and react to the world around them.
One immediate thing you notice is that he keeps telling her not to do anything too detailed. Which obviously cuts down the number of possible images she can come up with - instinctively she will avoid anything complex or obtuse or otherwise out of the ordinary because he's told her to keep it simple. And that doesn't just cut down the number of possible images, it cuts down the number _dramatically._ And so she ends up drawing...boats, crosses, trees, bananas, etc. Archetypal images that are immediately recognisable and simple. The kind of things you'd draw in nursery. And there are only so many of those images available to the human mind. Semantic cues are enough to do the rest, like 'don't go _overboard._ Let different images _sail_ through your mind.' etc.
I hear what you are saying abpout dramatically cutting down the options open to her, but still there are many many simplistic options open to her and on top of that he got them in the correct order. The words "sail" and "overboard" were simply used by Derren to let US, the youtube audience, think that we are being clever by spoting these verbal cues. Derren does this a lot and remarkebly well - some of his 'tricks' do indeed rely on very subtle verbal suggestions, but often times they are nothing but tricks he knows the audience will notice - this is what he builds his carreer on - it's similar to a magicians 'mis-direction', and he is very very good at it. His general persona fits perfectly with the illusions he performs - he is charming, slick yet you kind of know he's always 'up to something', yet he manages to pull it off without coming across as smarmy or untrustworthy. The way he actually 'does' a lot of these psychic stunts is hugely dissappointing when we actually discover the trick and not necessarily that clever - the clever bit is his performance which has taken years to hone and he's masterful at what he does. I don't know how he actually guessed what she was drawing but I'm pretty confident that what lies behind it was simple trickery(planted people, cameras, mirrors etc) - but to pull it off in the way he did was far from simple. I genuinally admire Derren Brown, but I wish he wouldn't resort to some of his "high profile" stunts that have been achieved with split-screen trickery and planted audience members - they are cheap tricks that all the famous magicians use and are ultimately hugely dissappointing.
@@fullstop6078 I have to disagree. I think you're really reaching if you're going to just pull out the "well there are stooges or cameras" line. You see this all too often with people who don't know how illusions are done, and just fallback on the entire thing being fake because they can't wrap their heads around it. I think it's also silly to say that it wasn't the verbal cues, but that Derren purposefully used that verbage, on top of the trick he was already doing to trick the psychics, to throw the small portion of viewers who noticed it off the scent. I think you're forgetting how easily suggestible people are, and instantly falling back on "the whole show must be fake because I don't know he did it". There's also a difference in the target of misdirection. In this illusion, Derren is targeting the Psychics and we're just viewing that.. Whereas the "split screen trickery" you mentioned, we were the target.
@@fullstop6078 I'm not so sure you do. To quote you exactly "I'm pretty confident that what lies behind it was simple trickery(planted people, cameras, mirrors etc)" That's at least 3 guesses. If you know exactly how it was done, why guess at all? I don't think you have any idea how it was done personally. Please, prove me wrong, and reveal at long last how this was done - without guessing this time. I should also clarify, magicians rarely fool me. Reference my 10 years in this same industry. Cheers
@@rje613 I DON'T know exactly how it's done - that's my point you idiot. You are keeping this thread going between us for no fucking reason and I'm bored of you.
Wait I don't get how he did it. People are using the example of the boat where he used the terms overboard. But for he banana and the tree and star he didn't tell her anything
I thought it was a clip from the first Iron Man movie where he was showing off the missile. I saw Messiah and thought it was the name of the missile! Lol, only then did I read the title.
I really wanted the video to end with an explanation how he did it. Am disappointed. Given the accuracy, I'd say that he knew for certain, which implies something like a camera or motion sensors or any other way to actually know, but I don't like to hang in speculations here.
Rule 2 of magic. Never reveal how a trick is done. Trust me, it's never as much fun if you know how, and you'll just end up feeling stupid. It's all about misdirection.
Idk how exactly it is done but he often will say things to put imagines in your mind (very useful for this one lol) and then put somewhat vague words on it. If he was legit magic or whatever he would draw what she drew not write down keywords
You know what I find interesting is the women drawing the pictures and our boy here are having a energetic connection! And some silly person thinks this is not happening!
How it's done: He's using a technique known as PENCIL READING. It's veeeeeery often used by magicians. And by Derren as well in his shows by the way ;-) The pen contains inertial sensors which allow you to track its motion, and therefore to know what the person is drawing. Derren is wearing an earpiece (yes he is; it's just smaller and goes deeper than usual ones, that's all). There you go. You're welcome. By the way: To those who think he suggested her to draw these things ("let different images sail through your mind, don't go overboard") --> That's exactly what Derren wants you to think. The probability of this working once is ridiculously low, so 4 times out of 4... forget it. (PS: Sorry for my English, it's not my mother tongue)
+DexM47 Then how do you suggest he did the religious symbol? He most likely put subconscious thoughts about religion in her head at some time, and then he assumed that she would draw a cross because the best guess for a white woman her age would be for her to think "christianity" But she ended up drawing the star of david. In the end, he was successful at getting her to draw something "religious", he just wasn't 100% accurate. This supports the suggestion theory, dont you think?
+Skippy Thorsen Well, yes and no. But in short: no :-) Yes in the sense that this is exactly what he wants people (who don't think he's a psychic) to believe. No, in the sense that... this is not what he did :-) Again, I don't know if my explanation wasn't clear or something, but he knows EXACTLY what they're drawing. But if his answers are too exact, everyone would stop believing that he's using suggestions, and realizes that he's "cheating", or, as I see it, doing what magicians do, i.e. illusion, which is his original profession. So his answers are DELIBERATELY vague, sometimes even slightly wrong, too keep people into believing that he's actually using suggestions.
+DexM47 That is a nice explanation, and I also don't believe the whole "putting images in people's minds" story. He keeps saying that, but he's a bit of a troll in that way :P Minds are easely manipulated, but not with that level of accuracy. However, if he was actually using an earpiece, why then use something as complicated as sensors in a pen? Why not just have a camera installed and have an assistant describe the image to him? Seems like a way simpler solution.
2:14 I challenge all of you here to find how he MAKES he draw what he wants her to draw. This is where I noticed it starts. Pretty much anytime you think he's shuddering or sentence skipping, are the moments that he's giving her subtle cues. Most people don't even notice it.
Did you catch his subtle word suggestion cues at the beginning of each time he tell her to draw. I'll give you the first two. "Sheet of 'PAPER'" ( causing the thought of a tree ). Then as we all remember from kindergarten, "now the 2nd". What's the 2nd picture we all associate when we practiced the alphabet ( A BANANA! )
Neuro linguistics, simple but he's very, very good. Even people who know what to look for would take a couple of views to catch them all, Derren's so smooth at it.
When giving her instructions he was subliminally planting words...i.e: sailing, overboard. That made her think of a boat. I believe he guessed sun as the next one bc he her mind would turn that direction bc ppl sail on sunny days. He also used his hands when instructing her about making the drawings & he actually made the shape of a tree. If you watch & listen carefully you'll be able to pick up on what he's doing.
@@jennifercowley8970He has to have edited out some of his guiding statements because there was nothing in the video that would lead up to him knowing she would draw a banana. Makes sense though cause if all his trucks were recorded they could be scrutinized and figured out.
What I don't get is, fake name or not, Derren is easily the most famous psychic debunker in Britain and probably the most famous in the world outside of maybe James Randi or Penn and Teller. How the hell did not a single one of these "psychics" recognise him?
6:09 Considering Derren was faking his ability. What the older chap says pretty much sums up psychics! He’d recommend a magic trick for all psychics and say “This is how you do it!” So basically fool people. Thank you Derren for leaving that at the end.
I like how Simon Baker admitted that he went on RUclips to look up tricks by mentalists (I'm assuming Derren Brown was one of those mentalists) when preparing for his role on the TV show The Mentalist.
I just simply guessed with not really listening and got the first guess the same as Darren and the second one almost, I guessed a circle. I had no abilities. I just imagine what would people draw randomly and it's always tree because the psychological tests are always trees and people got used to it. Tree, cross or circle is very often the first random picture.
*+rad0ri* Oh don't be ridiculous. The show didn't end there. He would've told them exactly what he was about later. That's what he does. He's extremely honest and loathes that people can be so self deluded but he doesn't want to hurt people. He just wants them to stop kidding themselves. It's the one's like Joe Power that Brown holds the highest disdain for. Sylvia Browne, Teresa Caputo, James Van Praagh etc., etc.,. All nasty, abusive people taking advantage of the bereaved, the lonely and the desperate who have lost people in the most horrific ways possible. Those cannibalistic pricks charge hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars so they can lie to their faces. The following link is a Brown episode called, 'The Man who contacts the Dead'. It's the Joe Power I mentioned earlier. Definitely worth a watch. ruclips.net/video/duxQA9TcDcA/видео.html
tats becoz this is not the full documentary of his video. the person publish this video didn't include how she was tricked by derren to draw those. watch other derren videos where he tricked many 'psychics' to answer what he wanted them to answer.
+bandawhat33 - He's a magician and 'psychological illusionist'. Basically he uses the exact same tricks and techniques that supposed 'psychics' do, only he doesn't pretend it's actually psychic power. What he does is staggeringly complicated, but to give a really basic summation; he isn't 'reading' their minds at all. He's _making_ them think of specific things through the power of suggestion so when he eventually says the word it seems to them like he's read their mind, but he hasn't. For instance "Let the imags SAIL through your mind, don't go OVERBOARD...etc" - this subconsciously makes her think of a boat, but she thinks she thought of it by herself. So she draws a boat and when he says 'boat' she freaks out. There's another clip of him doing the same thing to the actor Simon Pegg where he makes him think of a 'BMX bike' that explains it in some more detail.
E101ification yeah i get that but i don't beleive it. i mean that stuff works to to some of course. that's what tv and marketing does. but i doubt that he would have been able to do that. to this woman. it was staged.
+bandwhat33 Obviously the "psychics" are in on it. The "misdirection" is the NLP bullshit and the "psychological trick is bullshitting the audience. Pretty cheap.
He said something like "Let different images SAIL through your mind. Don't go OVERBOARD" and afterwards, he got the boat. It's like saying "Don't think about a black dog" and now you are thinking about one.
For the banana, he said ‘okay, alright, do a second one’ Apparently people subconsciously associate numbers with their position in the alphabet, so ‘second one’ Second (2nd) = B One (1st) = A So he suggested BA and she went for BANANA. I might be wrong, I know it sounds a bit daft, but that’s kind of how derren’s tricks work The boat one is a lot more obvious
@@4231jerome it sounds like an outdated conception of how the mind works. For certain things he does on the show there is no evidence of effectiveness, so I think part of it is bs. Like neuro linguistic programming. Its pseudoscience
It's the fox! Yeah of course you’ve got to take it with a grain of salt. It’s a tv show and potentially anyone is an actor. In his early days derren used to explain his methods more often, and in greater detail. Have you seen the Russian scam? I find that one pretty interesting.
+whatshisF4C3 He basically told the lady what to draw, without her realising that. A lot of that may have taken place beforehand, off-camera, during what everybody but Derren thought was small-talk. You can hear how he triggered her to draw a boat, though ("don't go overboard". That made me giggle :-) )
+whatshisF4C3 At least the boat picture was based on the words he spoke to her: "Let different images sail through your mind. Don't go overboard with it." "Sail" and "overboard" are quite clear nautical terms so he was probably planting the idea of the image into her mind subconsciously without her even noticing it. And I suppose the others were similar as well. Face/sun is probably a very common thing a person draws on paper if idling around.
+HenkkaArt Its a little hard to believe that's all it takes to put an idea into someone's mind so consistently (he got 5/5). I think that's how he wants us to believe that he does it, while in fact he's doing something completely different.
+MyWorldView yea maybe hes secretly a real psychic and hes trying to hypnotize and control an army of mind benders to revolt against the established illuminati based governments.
MyWorldView I think in one of Derren's specials he explains the whole deal how he does it and if I'm not mistaken that is how he did it with this exercise. It also had to do (if I recall correctly) with what a person usually draws when given a piece of paper. Faces, familiar everyday objects like cars, houses, stick figures aka crude humans since many don't bother to actually try and draw a real human figure.
I do believe there are some people who have some sort of gift. My sister's friend was missing, presumed to be dead...it was a case that was on the news...her and her husband went missing under suspicious circumstances from their property. For a month there was a search...My sister's husband called a local person and they talked and she said, she could see the missing woman..near water. There was in fact no water on this property. She also said the woman said her head hurt...and she was frightened and it was dark, and could smell leaves. Long story short, about 1 week or more the body was found off the property by a stream/creek buried with branches and dirt. She had been shot two times. Once in the head. Was the Psychic just guessing all these things? Everything she said was found to be true..and her vision was not filled with a bunch of details.
bikinggal1 maybe some level of telepathy exists but it doesn’t prove spirits exist. It just means we can send electrical signals to each other through our brain.
bikinggal1 sorry but, unfortunately... That description is vague enough to apply to a variety of settings and contexts. Also... That's sadly often the case when people go missing. This is the same reason people believe in horoscopes. They take something vague and are able to apply it to any life situation.
What the "psychic" woman said about being able to do anything whether she's done it before or not, just because someone asked her to, because they must have been guided to her; that means the next time someone askes me for directions, even if I don't know the way, they must have been guided to me, so I can just point them in any direction and it'll take them where they need to go.
"let that image sail into your mind" (she draws a boat). I assume sun is some how a word association with boat, probably because of the common image of a sunset over an ocean
+Patrick Allen 'Basically' yea, Derren is known to have worked with subliminal messages, it's actually a pretty big part of how to get people to choose things you want them to choose.
He just puts ideas in people's minds like when he said keep it big and clear like water then he said don't go overboard like don't go overboard a ship and stuff like thay
Sometimes I honestly think these people believe they have abilities and the encouragement from others that believe in them is enough to solidify their belief in themselves

4:37 - different images 'sail' through your mind and then 4:40 - don't go 'overboard' on detail. Bit of suggestion for a boat/something on water there!

He's just so smooth and confident. He's very easy to watch.
How is this even legal? These scammers should be in jail
+MarryJewana a fool and his money are soon parted. People are being taken by "legitimate" scams daily. Religion is the biggest money-making scam of all
+You need to realize I don't give a fuck true
It's america
+MarryJewana It's a complex issue. It is actually a crime in some states. It is also not specifically a crime in others. One issue that protects some 'psychics', 'mediums' and others is that they claim it was all just entertainment. Proving that to not be true is difficult especially if the scammer is careful about wording things.
Some people have gone to jail or at least been fined for these kinds of frauds, but not as many as should be by far.
+You need to realize I don't give a fuck how is it a money making scam? Just asking.
That is his misdirection, it is not what he is doing.
No that's just his way of story telling. It's all mentalism (pre-show, dual reality, and physically obtaining information). His story telling (that he uses some top secret mind manipulation) is made up and also sleightly ethically questionable, but it does more good than harm in my opinion.
Real life changer for these guys.. I hope.

The power of suggestion! WOW!
"...this is how you do it." OMFG! you guys struck gold and it was delivered to you on a silver platter. how utterly perfect! brilliant!
Notice how for the 3rd image @4:38 he says "let different images SAIL through ur head" followed by "don't go OVERBOARD" then voila a yacht on water is drawn.....
Why would they be surprised if this is one of the things you must be able to do to qualify doing what they're doing?
BUSTED!

That's just too helluva;)
Joke aside, some people truly believe that these people are possessed by demons . The irony is that it's exactly the type beliefs that people like Derren a striving to abolish.
He is not really a magician or illusionist. Most of the things he does are real, meaning he creates reality with his mind. We are all capable of this.
He needs to show us how he did this. Ive got a hunch.
@@samadbaksh how do you think he did it?
@@eliasbarboza9250 through words people can munipulate peoples reactions and imagary. Nothing psyhic about it. People get swayed and react to the world around them.
I love how Darren keeps his secrets.
One immediate thing you notice is that he keeps telling her not to do anything too detailed.
Which obviously cuts down the number of possible images she can come up with - instinctively she will avoid anything complex or obtuse or otherwise out of the ordinary because he's told her to keep it simple.
And that doesn't just cut down the number of possible images, it cuts down the number _dramatically._
And so she ends up drawing...boats, crosses, trees, bananas, etc.
Sorry cockface but I know exactly how he did it - I'm a professional magician and make my living from fooling dicks like you. Alla Kazzam!
Cheers

Thats what he wanted you to do... what he did was total opposite and wasnt shown to US🤷♂️...
@Jack Clare Agreed
How it's done:
He's using a technique known as PENCIL READING.
I know how this is done, seen him do it before when involved in a trick but since I worked it out I don't want to spoil it
I know how this is done, seen him do it before when involved in a trick but since I worked it out I don't want to spoil it
+DexM47 Then how do you suggest he did the religious symbol?
He keeps saying that, but he's a bit of a troll in that way :P
Minds are easely manipulated, but not with that level of accuracy.
What's the 2nd picture we all associate when we practiced the alphabet ( A BANANA! )
I'm leaving you guys to figure out the 2 words he says for the 3rd photo because it's the easiest.
+Michael Antonio that's a far stretch. Each time he told her to draw, I thought of what I would draw and it wasn't what you're implying he suggested.

Neuro linguistics, simple but he's very, very good. Even people who know what to look for would take a couple of views to catch them all, Derren's so smooth at it.
“Professional psychic” is just a better name for what it’s actually called...
“Really Good Bullshitter”
So disappointed that Derren doesnt share how he does this better.

These people are very insular, too focused on perpetuating their own schemes than to investigate what else is actually happening in the community

Oh don't be ridiculous. Definitely worth a watch.

tats becoz this is not the full documentary of his video. the person publish this video didn't include how she was tricked by derren to draw those. watch other derren videos where he tricked many 'psychics' to answer what he wanted them to answer.
As a person who has thoughts that make people think i'm high, he would not guess anything about my drawings.
I don't get it. how did he know what she drew? can someone help me?
E101ification yeah i get that but i don't beleive it. i mean that stuff works to to some of course. that's what tv and marketing does. but i doubt that he would have been able to do that. to this woman. it was staged.
bandawhat33 sublininal messages like saying don't go overboard
+bandwhat33 Obviously the "psychics" are in on it. The "misdirection" is the NLP bullshit and the "psychological trick is bullshitting the audience. Pretty cheap.
Derren Brown shows the degree to which societies are still looking for faith and hope in something, regardless of whether it is true or verifiable.
Could anyone explain how he actually did this?
Implanting suggestions through masterful use of language
He said something like "Let different images SAIL through your mind. Don't go OVERBOARD" and afterwards, he got the boat. It's like saying "Don't think about a black dog" and now you are thinking about one.
For the banana, he said ‘okay, alright, do a second one’
Apparently people subconsciously associate numbers with their position in the alphabet, so ‘second one’
Second (2nd) = B
One (1st) = A
So he suggested BA and she went for BANANA.
I might be wrong, I know it sounds a bit daft, but that’s kind of how derren’s tricks work
The boat one is a lot more obvious
@@4231jerome it sounds like an outdated conception of how the mind works.
For certain things he does on the show there is no evidence of effectiveness, so I think part of it is bs.

Ironic that the ads played this video are for professional psychics!!! Derren do something about this!
How did he fool them?
+HenkkaArt
Its a little hard to believe that's all it takes to put an idea into someone's mind so consistently (he got 5/5).
How did he do the first 2?
They don't, you're gullible, and you're an idiot.
