Love Derren's response to the aggressive, "What are you looking at?" and will keep it in mind for the future. My mother had a teenage guy say that aggressively to her at a train station. Her response was simply, "You tell me." He had nothing further to say. Another time when she was with her brother and their car had broken down, a bikie stopped and offered help. When he asked my mother if she felt afraid of him she asked, "Should I be?"
I actually loved the questions and answers at the end. The two of you really seemed to get along and with that you could (and did) ask some other type of questions. Most of the interviews result in the same answers from Derren Brown, because he prepared well and is mostly asked about the same things. So well done Jordan for getting to the more personal stuff too.
Have loved Derren's work for a long time, from his earlier TV craft through to his shows and his art too. His skills are fascinating. While my awareness is extremely low in everything he does, it is always good to spot in his episodes how the people are primed and get a tiny insight into how they are manipulated.

Also based almost purely on my own experience, I dont think the Victorians were as way off as we nowadays assume with the "4 humors": when I first heard of it I felt the same, but after battling issues with sinus draining and indigestion (characterised by a LOT of phlegm - and for which I have only really been able to try to understand myself, as all modern medicine does is prescribe you pills to attempt to control it - with absolutely no explanation), it made me rethink the idea a little as I came across it again. Derren is insanely clever, but sometimes I think he doesn't quite understand the true nature of his own power. No discredit to him, he is more awake than most people, maybe the point is that none of us have one absolute answer, the truth, whatever that is, can only really be understood by the interaction of ideas rather than to just discredit them because "we know so much more now". Do we? Truly? I dont think we know any more or less really - the modern world is about building structures of society in a very physical form - something that is slowly being shifted, most significantly from the 60s (The Beatles ofc), but I dont think we KNOW any more - the unconscious is universal and not subject to time as we are, after all. We were supposed to build our temples inside ourselves - we even have temples and an altar across our foreheads, at the seat of which is the remnants of the 3rd eye, which connects with an area of the brain (I forget the name), which is essentially how hypnosis is possible. You just have to make somebody 'see' cross-eyed. This is how Koans work, this is how we engage with narrative in book form, or a television programme. It's essentially the same idea of narrative driving our conception of reality, and how to contact the Right side of our brains - confuse the Left (or 'conscious') mind - it's really that simple. Doesn't mean I can do it, or at least not control it consciously. But with great power comes great responsibility.
It wasn't the Victorians who categorised health and disease in terms of "humours". Those beliefs pre-date the Victorians by 100s, even 1000s of years, maybe to the ancient Greeks. The Victorians were becoming more enlightened with the invention of the microscope. It still took a while for modern medicine to develop but they were getting there.
Talking about the woman who wanted him to put her in touch with her dead grandma reminds me of all of the people that I meet who are willing to just agree with someone to get that person to do what they want. Now that said there are absolutely people who have cognitive dissonance and hold to realities that oppose each other in their heads at once. But there are also people out there who will just agree with someone verbally even though they don’t agree with them in their beliefs to get that person to do what they want and I think that that is what that girl did with Derren on the night he describes.

"It's very hard to make a judgement about what you'd do in a situation when you're not in that situation." I beg to differ, Derren. If you tend to speak up against things you aren't happy about normally and are not afraid to stand out from the crowd and come into conflict with authority then it's perfectly reasonable to say you wouldn't do whatever, however, if you're generally compliant, don't question authority and tend to "go along to get along" then to say you wouldn't do whatever is a little hollow.
