If you want to hear Chris Voss' nuggets of wisdom without sitting through the full episode, we've got highlights (like the one below) on our Clips Channel! ruclips.net/video/32yB-kKMXTU/видео.html
Dude all of the other interviews made Chriss say almost the same things and stories, you just made him talk about his fears, his in depth thinking and techniques that he never told anyone! I think you could be a great negotiator!
Imagine if Lex Fridman did Chris Voss, and Jordan did Kanye West.... Lex was the only one who I've seen do well drawing out Kanye, to show he has some serious awareness of major league abusive predators in the music industry (some the same as Macklemore et al call out), but that he has some serious possible mixed organic and education gaps stunted intellectual development, very awkward in a creative guy whose mind is racing otherwise. As such, many of the public accusations against Kanye were frauds, with political and religious underpinnings if not propaganda to prop up crimes against humanity, in ways corporate marketing tries to make profitable. Talk about fertile ground for trying to negotiate around serious crimes, worse than an odd hostage scenario.... This interview with Chris is well done, because much of the negotiation issues discussed are process skills, whereas English language is better suited for discussions of crystal knowledge.
Best interviewer ever. Most interviewers immediately jump to the next question. It doesn't feel like an interrogation, it feels like a natural conversation. You could work anywhere as an interviewer.
wow thank you for the kind words! I really appreciate that. I work really hard at this. I'm glad it shows. Are you new to the podcast? Most of my episodes are on The Jordan Harbinger Show (podcast) and not on RUclips.
I am a procurement professional with 44 years of experience at a Fortune 500 company. I can tell you unapologetically that my negotiating skills are honed to a point where I thrive in the same environments others are extremely uncomfortable. I never thought about it, but I agree that purchasing/procurement professionals would make good hostage negotiators. For me, the key has been compromise and acknowledgement of effort. If I am willing to give a little in one area, and then ultimately succeed at the end goal and offer appreciation to the supplier, I have their loyalty forever. I will get what I need in urgent times because I have fostered the relationship through compromise and negotiation. I have told a supplier that they did NOT receive a particular project and made them feel GOOD about it. BTW, if a buyer is calling demanding a price cut at the end of a quarter, that request is coming from the Finance department crying for cost savings at the end of a crappy quarter. A "no" answer is all they need. If you give any concessions, the purchasing person looks bad to Finance and others. Their question will undoubtedly be asked "why didn't he negotiate that savings earlier? Why did it take us to ask?"
Jordan, your depth of questioning has made this interview one of my top five Chris Voss interviews. My goodness! A companion piece to Never Split the Difference could be written solely from this interview.
Jordan, your knowledge of interview process is priceless. As others have said, best interview with Chris. You were able to open doors in the conversation that he seldom expands on. Brilliant. Thanks.
You summarize what he says so he repeats in a different way.. Chris actually teaches that.. But you are doing it professionally and not just repeating like a parrot. Good job!
I have been viewing a lot of interviews with Chris Voss as I find the information he is sharing fascinating. This has to be one of the best interviews yet. Great flow between you two, easy to digest and also helps Chris bring out points not previously shared in past interviews. Thanks!
1:02:05 A good "How am I supposed to do that question": Usually forces a person to take a hard look at what supposed to do. They might not change their mind. Thats not the point the point is to get them (me) to stop and think. I'm thiking wait a minute people are going to just tell me what they think...how they expect to do that. Well two things, first of all everyone imagines that Yeah that's how that simulates in my head... That's how everybody simulates that in our head Now slightly 9 out of ten times that doesn't work out that way...
I wish Chris would write a follow-up book on some of his "new" techniques and dedicate chapters on how to use his tools in various circumstances like business, dating, relationships, cold-calling, parenting, therapy, etc. He is truly a wise wise man I love to consider a mentor. His book is to me the best of all-time and the tools I use constantly daily!
I'm in Procurement (for 20 years). I believe 80% of Procurement people is exactly like Chris says. I'm learning to be a "better" negotiator. Therefor going to see Chris in New York in May. Great interview.
I have been a fan of Chris for years. I have to say Jordan you might be the best interviewer he has ever had. Chris has no problems correcting people when the person misunderstands. You clearly understand what he does and knew the right questions to get him to expand on what he knows in ways very few have. You made me a subscriber.
This guy Chris has revolutionized the way I interact with my clients and workers. I started seeing results immediately after implementing his tactics it's insane! I am so grateful to have come across his videos on youtube.
Same here. I read his book and other books like how to win friends and influence people and got a job that is double the pay, then got promoted twice! Turns out people like it when you take a second and see what they actually want out of you.
I've read Chris' book and watched literally hundreds of his company's (Black Swan Group) videos on RUclips and THIS hour long interview gave me the best practical insight and notes I can take forward. Wonderful job Jordan.
I've watched a lot of Chris Voss videos recently because I'm trying to convince somebody to sell me something. This is the first host who seems ACTUALLY interested in learning and understanding what Chris is teaching and not just nodding and agreeing with everything he says (man, some of them are so bootlicker/condescending and hard to watch). Jordan seem like he's truly interested in using this info and not just having Chris on for the sake of pushing out another youtube video. The result is lots of new info here (particularly as related to psychology of the opposing party) rather than the same talking points as other videos.... I really appreciate this one.
Another outstanding interview, Jordan. This man has tremendous strength and self-confidence. That much was immediately evident from the moment he began speaking. Learned so much from that. Thanks to both of you for being such fine, open, inspiring teachers/role models for the younger generation at this critical time in our history. Keep it up!
I’ve watched several videos with Chris, I have to say to the interviewer job well done. With this particular interview compared to all the others any missed a Wass answers the questions with more relative ease in a little less of peg than usual. I own property, and sometimes I feel like a hostage negotiator or a diplomat. I’m currently going through a situation that is in the same row of the strategic power differential between the tenant and the owner. Chris demonstrates how using simple methods, like getting the person to say no, or getting the person to a place where you want them to be end we need the skills because unfortunately court or whatever the orever dire the situation may be or not for a particular situation. A lot of the stuff comes into play in life in an every day interactions. Particularly with people from the North East. This was one of the best interviews I have ever watched- I think it’s actually a masterpiece. I was hesitant about reading his book before end I was trying to figure out perhaps he had an angle. However, his transparency in this video had me riveted and I watched it twice. I may even perhaps buy the audiobook. The interviewer did a great job. Psychological profiling and understanding yourself and other peoples needs are so important but you’re so lacking. This is not just for hostage negotiation - this is practical in every day life.
Love Chris Voss! His training example on telling stories in the 2nd person (the general “you”) versus 1st person perspective is life - changing! For somebody who negotiated with her young kids everyday, including some special needs communication challenges. Thank you, Mr. Voss!

Chris Voss is absolutely brilliant and fascinating.....and when I close my eyes, he sounds like Al Pacino ! Jordan is also a very sharp guy, I could see where he would be an attorney....and he is an excellent interviewer...he asks thoughtful and penetrating questions.

This was so good I had to come back and watch it all over again. Great interviewing, great back-and-forth dialogue, and so much useful information. Well done gentlemen.
Excellent interview Jordan. You ask all of the right questions in order to elucidate from your guests all of their knowledge and wisdom. I learned a lot from this episode and I will most likely watch it a second time. Awesome guests too.
This was the most intricate interview with your questions and Chris Voss insight. Mutual respect for subject matter expect as well as thoughtful questions that made you think of different scenarios.
Jordan asked a lot of great questions, helping Chris provide tons of value to the audience. Not many folks like Jordan that are not afraid to ask questions.
@@JordanHarbingerShow not currently but I will based on my experience listing to the interview with Chris. Your style of communication with Chris reminds of an old boss. When we met with customers he was able to extract a lot of valuable information in a short amount of time via his questions.

ive watched almost every interview with Chris Voss on here, and you did an amazing job with questions and flow, so much informationI Why havent more people followed you?
When I was a purchasing agent, I was always very careful not to crush the vendors that relied on my business. That was an attitude imparted on me by my boss. So while I won't argue the point broadly, I will say that not all buyers are assertive types. Knowing that I have a good relationship with my vendor and that they'll bend over backwards for me makes more financial sense. I can browbeat the sales rep into cutting the price of a part by $.50 a box, and cool, I've saved a few bucks. But when our manufacturing department forgets to scrap out parts and suddenly I need that vendor to cut someone else's production run and run my part instead, that saves tens of thousands in lost production. An adversarial relationship with a vendor will cost more in the long run than letting them pad the margins a bit. I'm not saying you let them rake you over the coals, just that it pays to be a little flexible.
@TheJordanHarbingerShow, looks like you revealed a black swan when asking about the people Chis coaches being scared when they are negotiating. He revealed that he does like them being scared and discusses why. Very useful piece of information.
Best chris Voss interview yet. Listening for the third time Really good job interviewing him and making his points relatable to use in every day life Thank you
So I am a big fan of Chris and was following him around on his YT videos when I came across this one. What hooked me was the absolutely knowledgeable and yet unassuming interviewing style, getting the best out of Chris, but what personally blew my mind was at 51:10 when you made that remark, “ to the hostages inside it was not funny” with that smile…..Okay so I had read up on you too before the interview and so I know how that must have felt. Throughout the interview Chris is talking about hostage negotiation to someone who has been taken hostage - TWICE !!! Did he know that ? Doesn’t seem like. Could I have - with your experience of having been taken hostage done this interview in the same way ? Never ! Hats off sir ! While Chris did his share of teaching in the video, you did too ! It was an amazing lesson in humility and humor and a very deep preparation. Guess am gonna follow you around too !
Hey this is kind of you to say. So Chris and I have been friends for years. I think he does know I've been kidnapped 2x because I must have told him. This is also my 2nd or 3rd interview with Chris Voss, so we have some background. Do you listen to The Jordan Harbinger Show (podcast) as well? Most of my episodes are in the podcast feed.

What is interesting, is that it seems that an individual who takes hostages, is the same as a narcissist, in that...if you ask a narcissist the "WHY" question they have the same reaction as hostage taker. By the way awesome interview, thank you both...I have the Audible book "Never split the difference" which is great!
What's also very fascinating about Chris is, when was this interview recorded? 2018? 2019 perhaps? I mean it's quite irrelevant from a negotiating point of view, but the guy's gonna be 80 next year. Holy crap, look at that mental and physical health, incredible.
Jordan, I have watched other interviews with Chris Voss, and your skills as an interviewer are great. Thank you for asking the right questions for me to better understand Chris's techniques. You're a great interviewer!
Great interview skills Jordan. You asked questions in a way that Chris WANTS to clarify your questions, and it was very helpful for the audience to help us get a better understanding of what Chris is saying. I've listened to Chris a few times on RUclips before this interview, and found myself wanting more. You got him to say more. Thanks!

34:57 19 times... I learned that when I worked at a Radio Station... A commercial needed to be heard 19 times, for a person to really "Get It". ... “How?” -a powerful word in negotiating Book: The culture code By Daniel k. Mid 20-early 30s most focused on self, and hardest for them to negotiate Look for 1. Pronouns 2. Key words 3. Future words 4. Specific types of losses 5. How their calculation of losses affects their vision of the future 6. Optimistic of future, easier to negotiate, because they are more resilient 7. What’s driving you now? What are you afraid of losing? 8. Turn down negatives, and turn up positives 9. Figure out their “yes” questions, and the get them to say “no”, so they feel in control. 10. “Is it ridiculous to think this might work for you?” No, but here are the problems. “Will this work for you?” Leaves the person stuck thinking they only have yes/no. When they say “no” here are the problems. Now, when you fix the problems, you are meeting their needs, creating connections and understanding, and then once the problems are cleared, they want the deal as well.
This was a great interview @Jordan Harbiner, because you did get him into other fascinating topics, which was nice, since the other topics, like emotions and other aspects of brain function were ideas I had never heard Voss explore. Also, I liked that he (or seemed to be) subtly catching you on your not having read the book, or maybe not the whole book. Several time you'd ask him something and he'd say "It's in the book. In the book we talk about... " That made me giggle a little bit.
“Is it ridiculous to think this may work for you?” I’m definitely definitely using this when I have to present to a potential client - Qua Real Estate Agent Philadelphia, PA.

outstanding interview. Chris is obviously a master at what he does. And I'm very impressed, Jordan, you ask the right questions. Got such specific useful info flowing out of the master - more so than I've so far seen in other interviews.
Wow, I've listened to so many of Chris being interviewed. I think this one is one of the best. The host got so many examples and practical information out. Great job Jordan.

Minute 49-ish - "ask him if he wants to come out.." "I don't know how I do that." - That really hit me. I just felt some huge empathy for that guy.
This was so good I had to come back and watch it all over again. Great interviewing, great back-and-forth dialogue, and so much useful information. Well done gentlemen.

This was the most intricate interview with your questions and Chris Voss insight. Mutual respect for subject matter expect as well as thoughtful questions that made you think of different scenarios.

Really great interview.
Excellent. Good interview. Chris is always great, but often times the interviewer is not. Here, we get the best of both. Thanks

@TheJordanHarbingerShow, looks like you revealed a black swan when asking about the people Chis coaches being scared when they are negotiating. He revealed that he does like them being scared and discusses why. Very useful piece of information.
Brilliant man. His voice is very soothing too.

AWESOME dialogue back and forth. Mr. Jordan, EXCELLENT work. Two very intelligent men. Thank you!!!
@@Joles789 welcome. you've got a lot of amazing stuff to catch up on brother.
Chris Voss provides so much usable information i have had to listen to this podcast twice.
Agree! Thanks for listening!

I worked for an environmental activist network doing door to door solicitation and did the best out of the 4 other newbys they had. I think its mainly because 1. I only used part of hte script that felt right and natural for me me(and I thought would resonate with them) and 2. I would lead with things like "I realize its cold out and you probably don't want to stand around talking to me with your door open but..."
@@buzzkill808raven2 environmental activist? Your name fits perfectly. 😆
@@picknpull8888 you could have responded in so many ways yet you chose to say that...interesting. You do realize that if you value things like drinkable water and breathable air, you have only environmental activists to thank, right?! 19 times... I learned that when I worked at a Radio Station... A commercial needed to be heard 19 times, for a person to really "Get It". ... IF a person is not engaged ... shorter if they're listening. You just can't "Tell" somebody...
That is why in the Film Industry.. they say: "Show... Don't Tell" ... no one likes to listen or watch a "Talking Head".
Jordan , this is a very good video. Chris this was well said. Thanks
Iowa lady here. I agree with "coward" as being fighting words... 👍
“How?” -a powerful word in negotiating
Book: The culture code By Daniel k.
Mid 20-early 30s most focused on self, and hardest for them to negotiate
Look for 1. Pronouns
2. Key words
3. Future words
4. Specific types of losses
5. How their calculation of losses affects their vision of the future
6. Optimistic of future, easier to negotiate, because they are more resilient
7. What’s driving you now? What are you afraid of losing?
8. Turn down negatives, and turn up positives
9. Figure out their “yes” questions, and the get them to say “no”, so they feel in control.
10. “Is it ridiculous to think this might work for you?”
No, but here are the problems.
“Will this work for you?”
Leaves the person stuck thinking they only have yes/no.
When they say “no” here are the problems. Now, when you fix the problems, you are meeting their needs, creating connections and understanding, and then once the problems are cleared, they want the deal as well.

Brilliant interview, guys. So enjoyable
So much useful information that was talked about during this video. Loved his book.

Brilliant conversation & stimulating subject.
Oh man, he did slow me down at 1:17 before the end of the sentence! That was great!
