My 20-Year Coma (Medical Miracle Documentary) | Real Stories

- In 1984, 18 year old Sarah Scantlin was run over by a drunk driver. The severe brain injuries left her in a coma for twenty years. Doctors had to remove the part of her brain that governs speech to save her life. The prognosis was that she would be in a vegetative state for the rest of her life, with feeding tubes to keep her alive. In 2005, Sarah miraculously woke up in the nursing home where she lay for two decades and began to speak. She asked the nurse for a manicure.
No-one has ever been in a coma for that long and regained the power of speech. The film meets Sarah two years after she spoke those first words. Now, she wants to prove once more she can achieve the impossible. Sarah’s goal is independence. To feed herself, and be able to stand and walk unassisted. The film follows her rapid progress and her family’s struggle to finance further intensive rehab for her after already losing everything they had on medical bills.
Sarah’s loved ones also come to terms with the guilt, sacrifice, and loss that they suffered over those years that Sarah ‘disappeared’. The film explores how Sarah’s brain rewired itself and how there is much more going on in the brains of coma victims than anyone ever thought possible.

this woman visited her friend in a coma for 20 years and I can't get a text back
she probably rather visited out of survivors guilt after the traumatic accident, than pure friendship. doesnt make it worth less.
Kala Halani I wouldn't say that, maybe there was a little guilt there, but I think she was there for her because she was her friend!! That shows that she was a TRUE friend!
Same
My fucking friend doesn't respond to questions but thinks he isn't rude.
cum Thats what im saying!!!
Wow talk about friendship, I was amazed I mean her bestfriend is definitely a keeper
lilz ditto. just imagine the blessings she's receiving... what a great person..
***** She never gave up on her not matter what, that is true friendship right there, just beautiful
lilz while this documentary is about the medical miracle, the most heartwarming part to me was their lifelong friendship
lilz She had a great friend
lilz that is definitely the definition of a TRUE friend!!!
Sarah died in 2016, her dad also in 2016 and her mum in 2018. Lovely parents and a fantastic daughter. They had a few but very precious years together. RIP
Parents are dumb. They should have forgot Sarah and focused on their lives
@@azazello1784 Dude , you're pure evil
@@azazello1784 you're just plain incorrect. The fact that we now even know waking up so long after being dormant is possible is a scientific marvel.
Bless them all. May they rest in peace 🙏
Look up Within Heaven's Gates by Rebecca Springer 😇
When Sarah sang Happy Birthday to her dad, I cried - that was quite simply beautiful.
R.I.P Sarah Scantlin (1966-2016)
What a loyal friend, visiting someone in a coma for twenty years without hope for them waking up. Absolutely amazing.
Yet she couldn't keep her legs closed and had to get husband and kids.
The first tragedy is the accident, the second tragedy is the family left near bankrupt because of the medical bills.
I couldn't agree with you more x
mpking1374 That is a Sin.
@@wonderfulwenna2710 confused sorry..?!
Stacey Quigley Ellis it’s not right that people lose their life savings due to health issues, whether it’s a surgery or long term care.😊

Also, my god, can we give a shout to Sarah's father? What an incredible father he is. What a good dad. Dad of the year here.
and her mother!!
And the mom dumb dumb
Parents of the CENTURY !
Unfortunately all three have now passed, but they are together. RIP Sara and her parents. 💔😢
I agree her parents were and are ROCK STARS IN MY BOOK! HER DAD WAS JUST ADORABLE! I CRIED WITH HIM WHEN SARAH SANG HAPPY birthday TO HIM! SO SWEET!
Awww..her dad is really the sweetest.
What a beauty it would have been if she dreamed her life from that day. Like instead of getting hit, she made it home safe and the dream was her hanging around with her best friend, travelling the world, falling in love, having children. I hope she had the best the dream ever in those 20 years. RIP Sarah :(
Mesha Smith this makes me question my own sanity and reality.. great comment!
Lisa Hlavackova Totally agree👏
She said 19 actually 🙄
Mesha Smith you are a very positive person, and I absolutely, agree with you, even though I couldn't articulate it, quite like u!
what a beautiful, thought provoking statement. Sometimes I too wonder the same thing. Maybe it's just a fantasy. Maybe it's the romantic in me. But I really hope she did.
My ex-girlfriend was in a coma and she said that she could hear just not see everything around her all the time. She could hear when her mom read to her and she could hear when the doctors would talk. Being in a coma is some crazy stuff...
I've heard that people in comas can hear and understand. It sounds as if your former girlfriend is doing okay now.
I started crying when she said that she got hit by two cars. I can't imagine seeing that and having that memory in my head for the rest of my life. God bless them all
her parents NEVER gave up on her. that shows true love.
Imagine going to sleep young and beautiful and waking up old with most of your life gone...
chloweful she was always beautiful!
chloweful she's been and always pretty
That would be a nightmare. What a loss of a life.
its not life.
this should never have been allowed to go on that long.
I would be highly pissed off! Yelling why didn't your dumbass pull the damn plug?
Sarah passed away in May 2016 - just after her 50th Birthday (sad to find this on searching about her progress)
Damn. Went through the comments hoping not to see this one...
Yeah - I've just done a Google as well - really sad. And her lovely Pa Jim last year too. But there's a lovely story about her featuring her big brother (strangely not featured in this doc) on hutch news.com... seems she did make even more amazing progress
NicoleAspen I can't believe 2016 taking another amazing person Im glad 2016 is over so amazing poeple stop dying ☺
Thanks for sharing about that other article- it was great to read more about her progress and see more pictures of her.
NicoleAspen thank you for updating us! so sad to hear that.
Saddened to hear the news that Sarah and her Dad passed away. I'm glad they got to spend the last 11 years together and I'm happy for her family and friends being able to get that precious time. Sarah and her Dad are now singing together as angels, rest peacefully Jim and Sarah :(
Awww how did they pass and when?
And now her mom who died in 2018. RIP all of the family.
I was in a car accident in 2007 when I was 16. I too suffered frontal lobe damage. It was considered a Severe TBI, was in a coma for over a week. I also had to re teach myself how to walk, talk, dress and so forth. Sort of the same scale as Shawna. It was a long recovery process and it sucks horribly to be stuck in your head. You're in there, and you FEEL completely normal BUT you're not.
They had me in a cage basically in my room, I thought I could walk but I couldn't. I felt completely normal, and would get frustrated in my therapy when I was asked to do something I knew how to do or knew the answer to but just could not connect the parts in my brain to make my body do or say it.
I dont know if Im just lucky to make a 100% recovery or the fact I disliked the fact of feeling stupid and pushed myself to be better than my classmates when I made it back into school .
Itz Just Linzee what is it like in coma?
amanda sales it's like nothing. You just wake up. I didn't even know I was in one until I woke up.
Kaneki Ken My ex-girlfriend was in a coma and she said that she could hear just not see everything around her all the time. She could hear when her mom read to her and she could hear when the doctors would talk. Being in a coma is some crazy stuff...
this is so interesting, nearly teared when she sang to her dad
TheUptownGrrl lemme get that Insta love
My mum took care of Sarah when she arrived in Wichita. None of the staff thought she would make it. What an amazing story.
Did they not move her limbs on a regular basis to help them not atrophy?
My heart broke for Sarah, she had no idea she was 41 she thought she was 19. When her dad asked her what she wanted to do next what was her goal and she said walk it was beautiful. Her friend is amazing, and I love love love her parents. Ugh such a terrible thing that she spent more than half her life on a coma because of some careless douchebag. Rip Sarah. 🌞 Keep on shining!
Maybe that careless douchbag should've gone bankrupt.
How on earth do you find a friend like this woman!? You are an angel of a friend!!!
Well a small thing to get saved, It was Sarah who pulled her friend out of harm way.
must be horrible to wake up the wrong age
Best friend goals for real this is so touching ❤
The scary thing about her screaming is thinking how often in those 20 years she was trying to scream to them but couldn't... :(
I'm so glad she got out of the minimal awareness state and could communicate for the last decade and a bit of her life.
She was indeed a beauty.
Shut it did u see her before the accident she was stunning
@@isaiahwilliams7150 you should've been in her position, how would that feel?
my heart hurts, seeing so many people say Sarah was ugly, no matter what stage she was in. "she was an ugly cockroach, even before the incident!"
dear god, you HEARTLESS shrews! you're all disgusting for saying such awful things.
I agree. That is JUST AWFUL! KARMA WILL GET THEM! I pray for them and pity them. All I can see is they won't suffer the same fate Sarah did
Back when she had this brain surgery done, techniques and equipment weren't near as good as they are now, just as now they aren't as good as they will be in the future. Those doctors did one heck of a job doing as well as they did to preserve her!
O my god, she think she's 19, that's terrible, I'm crying. I really hope she managed to recover completely. I know she's dead in 2016 but I hope she passed a good time in the years after. 20 years, god ! I can't even imagine myself in her shoes.
Why doesn't the drunk driver/ their insurance pay for Sarah's treatment?????????????????????
Atlas Shrugged drunk driver was most likely still in jail
Frank doubt it. if it's a first offenses they can get a slap on the wrist especially if they had money
had money? Why are you exploiting this for class division? What a ridiculous thing to say........... in reality it was probably the opposite and the driver didn't have any insurance as they would rather spend the money on alcohol.............. You really believe that they would let someone drink drive and do this to a woman ''because they were rich''. You are fuc--kin deluded
Beautifully Broken that's a good point , it's unfortunate though
Atlas Shrugged
Back then the max you had to carry on auto was 20K. a lot of people didn't carry coverage at all.
omg, sarah's parents are full of blessing! I cry everytime I see her dad talking. such a wise person!
Yulia Ayu Asyarrief yes..❤️
his dad could be voice actor
it was her brother i'm sure. her parents were too old to travel.
What amazing stories! This proves that we should NEVER give up on anyone, or ourselves. Even in the most bleak situation, when it looks like it will never get better, you never know what MIRACLE is just around the corner! What a joy for the parents of these women, to have their daughters back, after such devastating injuries. I teared up more than once watching this, what a blessing of hope!
ohhhhhh my lord !!! i just cried so much when Sarah sang happy birthday to her dad😭💖
God bless their friendship. Sarah has a really good friend. I wish their were more friends who actually care about their friends in the world
What a amazing story. It must've been so weird waking up an seeing that everyone and everything is older an different but you still feeling the same age as the day of the accident
RIP Sarah & your Pa! May you both RIP. Her best friend was truly a great dedicated friend. Hard to find that now a days.
Amazing story. I'm glad she was able to spend some time awake with her family and friends. RIP. An amazing soul.
I genuinely just fell in the floor crying when she sang happy birthday to her daddy....my heart couldn't take it
the way her dad and best friend interact with her makes me smile so big oh my gosh
This shows what a true friend looks like!
All the blessings to that lady ,who didn't give up on her friend.
a parent's love is the best thing in the world.....
So true! Sarah's parents were so supportive! Most families would just give up on their loved one and that would be that. God bless them and Sarah. And now the dad has passed.(January of last year) I wonder if the Mom is still living? I'll have to Google it. I know Sarah herself died in May of 2016. At least Dad and daughter are together now. May they both rest in peace❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
@@anitastodolak9882 I think it's cruel letting someone hang on for 2 decades.
@@MrBibi86 I agree but it wasnt like she was on life support at the time of her death. She died peacefully without being hooked up to machines. Take the case of Karen Ann Quinlan. She hung on for a full 10 years after life support was removed. The difference in my opinion was that Sarah could communicate somewhat but Karen couldn't. She was still in a coma/vegatative state when she died. Sarah was awake and could actually talk and interact with people. She had physical therapy also. I feel with time she could have made some progress. I'm physically disabled myself and I don't give up on myself or others that easily. That's just my opinion and outlook on things. I feel there's always hope
I find it interesting how after all that time, she could still immediately understand and pick up on social cues, like when Laurie (if I spelled your name wrong, I'm sorry) commented on when Sarah said she looked old, and then said, "no you're not old". Very intriguing...feel sad that she was unable to express herself for so long. I can't imagine that.
Having done patient care, we get to leave, walk, laugh, talk, share dinner with friends. When we leave the room we think of other things, do other things, these poor folks never leave their prisons. I hope upon her return everyone got to say hellos and goodbyes as they needed to 20 years prior. Beautiful lady, peace, and peace to her family.
I would be so angry if my family did this to me. It's amazing that she woke up, but I can't imagine being in a coma for 20 years...
Maggie E you can't imagine being in a coma for 20 years because you can't hear anything, but I agree with you
Samantha McMahon Absolutely not true. There are phases of coma from 1 to i believe, 10. And lower phases of coma, the patient is mobile, can hear, can respond somewhat, and can do basic tasks.
YOu might find it interesting. Check out coma phases.
I agree.
life is very precious.
Neither did she. It made little difference to her.
I think is beautiful. A miracle that teach us that God is in the command of life. Doctors can only do this much.
Eitherway if you don't wanna you can let that in writing in your will.
Such a sad yet inspirational story. She was very loved and always will be💙
Her daddy sure does love her .... you can see it and hear it in his voice 🥰
In 2010-2011, I was in a coma for around five months, in the hospital for nine months. There seemed to be so much I had lost in life, but compared to Sarah, I lost next to nothing.
when she was in a coma for that long, why didn't they do physical therapy? You don't have to pay for that, could of moved a leg a few minutes per day, an arm...so the joints don't lock up, especially for that long. I've seen this happen
(rip Sara)
Tiara Robinson no connection to the brain so no amount of therapy helps just like a stroke really, when your out everything is involuntary your autonomic nervous system takes over...
greg miller: It might not have made it so that she could have moved them on her own, but it would help to keep the joints in a condition that they could be moved. You can stimulate the muscles externally.
Tiara Robinson: I guess the medical staff didn't want to bother with physical therapy if they didn't think she was going to wake up.
Tiara I agree hunn .. my sisters in a coma and we massage her everyday ❤️❤️
USA medical system doesn't work for the people.
@@eunicejazz98 are you serious? The medical system kept her alive for 20 years dumbass.
I feel bad because So many years were taken away from her and it’s a miracle that she’s awake and talking
with tears rolling , congratulations to her parents for been super heroes of Sarah
What a wonderful support Sarah has, they never gave up on her and still love her to this day. Hopefully Sarah lives a long life, happy and healthy.
Kaitlin Hannah she's passed, sorry you didn't know
+Raquel2002 Wow you're heartless.
steven Claessen I was trying to be nice... I was being really genuine. I think I should stay off the Internet and stay locked in the house because I guess I am not normal enough to come off concerned or even caring. Sorry that I seemed like a butthole. I even said passed instead of died. I just don't get people and it actually makes me sad.
I like your carrot
Thanks for cheering me up
I was unconcious for 2 weeks, after landing on my head in a skating accident but i think I could be roused because I remember all I would say was "let me sleep", when I woke up properly I felt drousy but fine, I asked how long I'd been asleep. I've suffered no I'll effect. I'm so grateful. It takes time to heal.
Glad you're back ladies 💜
@ those saying the parents should’ve simply “pulled the plug”: there was no plug to pull. She was in a vegetative state - her eyes were open, she was breathing, her heart was beating normally. She wasn’t on any kind of life support. Who knows how much the poor girl was actually aware of.
i hope everyone watching this never ever gets behind the wheel after drinking. one persons selfish decision did this
Props to her friends that kept visiting her over and over again!!! We all need friends like that!
"Best friend since 6th grade was Lori Shockley."
Wow... What an AMAZING dad!! How encouraging he was of her, u could tell he was so proud of her!! Rip to him and sarah
Amazing parents, Amazing friend , amazing Sarah , amazing story
Omg Sarah is so lucky to have a great friend
It was cruel to keep her alive in that state for twenty years , it must of been torture like a nightmare she can never wake up from. Then to fully wake up 2 that lifestyle. I'm sorry i wouldn't want that. But God bless her and I wish her and her family happiness they deserve it
I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking the same thing. I've told my family multiple times, if I cannot be myself until the very end, pull the plug. At least I can go onto the next life you know? But bless this poor woman's heart for enduring all of this.
I agree.
Her dad was just amazing. RIP both of you sweet souls.
RIP Sarah
This is so sad and the poor parents having to sell all to get care for their daughter. That is horrible
I fucking hate how hospitals come after you to cut life support on loved ones. My father was in a coma for 3 days and everyday they came and pestered her to pretty much just kill him. He died anyways, but why the fuck would you pressure someone to kill their loved ones???
The true miracle here is the constant love of Sarah's father and her best friend Laurie for her. I don't see the medical miracle ... she is still sadly and severely handicapped. But the courage and optimism and unwavering love of those two people is truly humbling. Beautiful.
Shauna seems so determined to understand and grow from her situation. To be so young, and go through this, she’s going strong. Great family! 🙏♥️
Her name is SARAH and shes been gone for a few yrs now..since 2016!
How does the driver live with themselves knowing they did this to someone?
By doing it yet again a couple years later but he didn't hit anyone this time. He did get some jail time but not enough in my opinion.

Sara’s dad is a beautiful human being💙
Wow what a true friend!! ❤️ still visiting her through all that time
most amazing story✨
I was in a coma for 2 weeks, my family had been at the hospital for a week. when I was told they'd been there I didn't believe it because I didn't remember it. when I saw the pictures I stared at them in disbelief. it was the strangest thing to see undeniable evidence yet it makes no sense.
J Miller Your experience is like being hit by a car that you did not see coming, so your brain lacks that necessary info! It is a shock and your brain cannot make any sense out of it! If you did see the car coming, your brain would have processed it to an extent, even if you were not able to react in time!
Lenita A actually i WAS hit by a car! another car, but I have amnesia for the accident and the time in the coma. the drs said it was from having a concussion
The happy birthday!! That was so sweet
Laurie is an outstanding friend. No one has ever stood by me, especially blood relatives.
What wonderful friend definatly a keeper
The happy birthday song made me cry so hard. As my father's mind goes, I am uncertain how things will go, but I will be with him. Love you Papa.
God bless parents like that

Amazing story of love and hope. Personally I would have rather passed away then be in that 20 yr state, then wakeup in that condition, and my parents going bankrupt, for me. God rest Sarah and her family. No more suffering. 💕🙏🙏🙏
Well aren’t you a charmer
You can end it all now and be a burden on no one ever again you ungrateful little twit.

nice documentary
America get your act together stop making people pay for health care .
rest in peace Sarah it's terrible what happened to you and your family
Alexander Lewis Reed where are you from? America has yet to realize that charging for Health Care isn't the way to go
They have some very silly ideas regarding universal healthcare.
The issue is that healthcare in America is a business, therefore it exists to make profits and companies have no interest in keeping drug prices competitive. Healthcare in other parts of the world the drug companies have to sell their products to Governments therefore they are bidding for contracts so it is in their interests to keep the prices as competitive as possible, it is the exact opposite in America where Doctors are given financial incentives to prescribe specific drugs to their patients and often they are prescribed needlessly just to boost the Doctors income or the horrific case in Florida where patients were told they had cancer when they didn't and were giving chemo needlessly which in several cases caused the death of patients and it was all done for financial gain and should serve as a lesson in how money corrupts even in the medical field.
First of all once Sarah became an adult and being profoundly disabled ( in a coma ) she would have been put on Medicaid, and all her medical costs would have been covered. Her parents insurance didnt carry Sarah all those years. There is much more to their story of financial woes,,trust me. Also in the story they said caring for theri daughter caused them to have to move etc, not paying for her medical Bill's
Sarah is absolutely on Medicaid and that's 100 percent coverage, including specialists
@@murdershe......7378 please show me proof of these patients given cancer drugs without actually having cancer.
RIP Sarah

Don't feed the trolls guys
Heavy Tusnia I bet you are no oil painting!!! Like to see how you would be, after twenty years in a coma!!
Heavy Tusnia what a disgusting person you are!!!
So, glad that both them regained their consciousness. But, after such life changes, it is so difficult to come back into the realm of being normal. I have had a similar life set-back, and it has been very difficult to fight my way back. Mine is more physical and not so much mental. Thus, all of us need to remember to give people like this space (when things unexpected happen), and the encouragement is sure helpful to giving us the chance to come back & be normal.
11:28 "The brain is the center of all thought". You don't say?
For all the idiots she wasn’t on life support, so please stop with the “this was so cruel” comments or “I’d rather be dead”. Their only option was to starve her to death if they wanted her to pass.
