My 20-Year Coma (Medical Miracle Documentary) | Real Stories

  • In 1984, 18 year old Sarah Scantlin was run over by a drunk driver. The severe brain injuries left her in a coma for twenty years. Doctors had to remove the part of her brain that governs speech to save her life. The prognosis was that she would be in a vegetative state for the rest of her life, with feeding tubes to keep her alive. In 2005, Sarah miraculously woke up in the nursing home where she lay for two decades and began to speak. She asked the nurse for a manicure.
    No-one has ever been in a coma for that long and regained the power of speech. The film meets Sarah two years after she spoke those first words. Now, she wants to prove once more she can achieve the impossible. Sarah’s goal is independence. To feed herself, and be able to stand and walk unassisted. The film follows her rapid progress and her family’s struggle to finance further intensive rehab for her after already losing everything they had on medical bills.
    Sarah’s loved ones also come to terms with the guilt, sacrifice, and loss that they suffered over those years that Sarah ‘disappeared’. The film explores how Sarah’s brain rewired itself and how there is much more going on in the brains of coma victims than anyone ever thought possible.

    I was in a car accident in 2007 when I was 16. I too suffered frontal lobe damage. It was considered a Severe TBI, was in a coma for over a week. I also had to re teach myself how to walk, talk, dress and so forth. Sort of the same scale as Shawna. It was a long recovery process and it sucks horribly to be stuck in your head. You're in there, and you FEEL completely normal BUT you're not.

    • @Loveinvictus
      @Loveinvictus 7 лет назад +28

      They had me in a cage basically in my room, I thought I could walk but I couldn't. I felt completely normal, and would get frustrated in my therapy when I was asked to do something I knew how to do or knew the answer to but just could not connect the parts in my brain to make my body do or say it.

She hung on for a full 10 years after life support was removed. The difference in my opinion was that Sarah could communicate somewhat but Karen couldn't. She was still in a coma/vegatative state when she died. Sarah was awake and could actually talk and interact with people. She had physical therapy also. I feel with time she could have made some progress. I'm physically disabled myself and I don't give up on myself or others that easily. That's just my opinion and outlook on things. I feel there's always hope

Very intriguing...feel sad that she was unable to express herself for so long. I can't imagine that.

    when she was in a coma for that long, why didn't they do physical therapy? You don't have to pay for that, could of moved a leg a few minutes per day, an arm...so the joints don't lock up, especially for that long. I've seen this happen

      greg miller: It might not have made it so that she could have moved them on her own, but it would help to keep the joints in a condition that they could be moved. You can stimulate the muscles externally.
      Tiara Robinson: I guess the medical staff didn't want to bother with physical therapy if they didn't think she was going to wake up.

      The issue is that healthcare in America is a business, therefore it exists to make profits and companies have no interest in keeping drug prices competitive. Healthcare in other parts of the world the drug companies have to sell their products to Governments therefore they are bidding for contracts so it is in their interests to keep the prices as competitive as possible, it is the exact opposite in America where Doctors are given financial incentives to prescribe specific drugs to their patients and often they are prescribed needlessly just to boost the Doctors income or the horrific case in Florida where patients were told they had cancer when they didn't and were giving chemo needlessly which in several cases caused the death of patients and it was all done for financial gain and should serve as a lesson in how money corrupts even in the medical field.

      First of all once Sarah became an adult and being profoundly disabled ( in a coma ) she would have been put on Medicaid, and all her medical costs would have been covered. Her parents insurance didnt carry Sarah all those years. There is much more to their story of financial woes,,trust me. Also in the story they said caring for theri daughter caused them to have to move etc, not paying for her medical Bill's
      Sarah is absolutely on Medicaid and that's 100 percent coverage, including specialists

    So, glad that both them regained their consciousness. But, after such life changes, it is so difficult to come back into the realm of being normal. I have had a similar life set-back, and it has been very difficult to fight my way back. Mine is more physical and not so much mental. Thus, all of us need to remember to give people like this space (when things unexpected happen), and the encouragement is sure helpful to giving us the chance to come back & be normal.
