- Growing Impatiens From Seed! Not the Easiest!
Growing Impatiens from seed is a real challenge. I am growing red pelleted Impatiens and a mixed variety called Fizz that is a Hybrid.
I already started some a few weeks ago I will show you how I grew them from seed and where they are at growth wise today and the things I would do differently if I was to try growing them from seed again.
These are all McKenzie Seeds

Looks great! I love that you share and divide your seedlings to friends if they want a particular colour. It’s my first time growing impatiens from seed and I have been impressed so far with Veseys Xtreme Utopia Mix, i started them a month ago and I got practically full germination which I was so pleased! This variety’s supposed to better tolerate high heat and humidity so they can last through the hot Summer for me hopefully😊
Thanks for the recommendation I may have to try those next year.
Good luck with your impatiens Jacqueline! Bonny
Here’s hoping see if I can get enough to give to my friend doubt I will try it again unless they grow amazingly well.
Good tips! Impatiens is one I’ve decided to leave to the greenhouses 😅
Probably a good idea I don’t think they’re worth growing to be honest after trying it. I also feel when some of the seed packages don’t list germination rates it means you need to double up on things like impatiens or pansies to get enough plants.
Exactly! I got one surviving plant from one whole package last year. I hope you have better success 😊
@alligator_pie even if I get a handful I will consider it a success for my first time growing them from seed. That may inspire me to try again and double up on the seed. I don’t mind being a mad scientist lol.
Could I cover them with vermiculite to help with the damping off or would that hinder germination? I would like to start some Impatients to plant in what little shade that I have.
Yes! A very thin layer overtop can help, as long as they have light and warmth to germinate.
Yes that would definitely help.
How long do you keep the growth light on?
I try for 16 hours a day. Sometimes a bit more or less. I also put the plants in front of windows to supplement with natural light. What I have learnt is the natural light is best they grow much faster with natural light so the combo really helps.
Great! Thanks. I started getting little gnats. :(
I understand it’s almost imperative once you take the humidity dome off to have a fan lightly blowing over them? Most info I have read or watched do that to prevent ‘damping off’, have you tried that?
Yes I run fans I setup my fans right away and once the seedlings start coming up I start running it on the lowest setting.
Boy, that’s not good news… won’t be trying those…. and it’s one of my favorite shade annuals. Good catch on the seed pack not mentioning germination rate, don’t think I’d have ever caught that and it sure is telling!
Thank you so much!
@@brendahayes3365 yes I find with McKenzie seeds I should always buy extra packets due to the questionable germination rate except for seeds like zinnias etc. I love pansies so I always buy extra and last year found the germination rate poor so added another packet same thing this year. Might order them online next year where the germination rate is on the packet like Johnnie’s or west coast seeds. Veseys is pretty good too except they don’t always have germination rate on them but have been very successful for me. Always a challenge with gardening guess that keeps it interesting lol.
Interesting…. I don’t do many seeds indoors due to fungus gnats, worried about them getting into my houseplants and don’t have a set up in my basement for seed starting so rely mainly on what I can winter sow which has been incredibly productive for perennials.
I always hear good reviews of Johnnys seeds.
I am waiting for spring to buy a Chinook Rose you introduced me to!!
How much sun is yours in? I live on a tree filled acreage and fight for sun but I love that rose and all the specs on it. I don’t have any roses, always thought they are just too fussy and need to be babysat 😂 but that one seems quite hardy and disease resistant along with many other qualities!
Just worried about how much sun it requires…
Thanks Jacqueline
@brendahayes3365 with the Chinook Sunrise you can get away with partial sun shade. I find roses don’t always need full sun. It’s a very hardy rose and so beautiful. I can’t wait till you find one. Veseys has them just an fyi you can order it online.
