The publisher gave the devs a meager budget and a one-year deadline. This is what you get when This quarter's numbers matter more than artistic integrity.
And I feel so sorry for the devs, this must have been absolutely soul-destroying to work on

Mmm hmmm, Kong and Gollum sure looks like the PS2 era.
I think "Gawl work and no play makes Kong a dull game" really needs to be appreciated more because the devs were not paid well and were forced to make the game in one year with extreme crunch times, along with that the team was quite small.
Like I don't think there is a universe similar to ours where those four things are true and a good game comes out of it, except for Majora's Mask.
Weren't those the conditions that Majora's Mask was made under? And don't points (2) and (4) basically follow automatically from (1)?
@@QuantumHistorian Majora's mask had 40 people working on it and this game had between 2-20 depending on the day, and along with that Majora's Mask is genuinely a miracle actually no explaining it don't know why I just tried to.
And yeah thinking about it, this comment was written in like a few seconds I didn't put much thought into it, I'll just conflate those points together
Let's not forget that Majora's Mask was built on top of OOT. Not that it isn't a masterpiece in its own right, but saying it only took 1 year is a bit misleading since it wasn't starting from scratch.

Fair enough, it was just the first example that popped into my mind of a game that was rushed yet excellent. Just because something is possible doesn't mean it should be expected anyway.

An incredible game in every sense. When playing as Jack, it felt like a straight up survival horror game. That game nailed atmosphere.

Judging by the way he repeated "40 dollars" several times at the ending, I think Honest Trailer Voice Guy spent that money without knowing beforehand how bad the game was and he is regretting some of his life choices.

I'm surprised there was no mention of the MonsterVerse here, since Kong currently has a big blockbuster movie series going on right now that this game doesn't tie in with at all (even though it sounds like it should, what with Kong's parents killed by a giant reptile (which should be a Skullcrawler instead of Gawl), Kong finding remnants of his people's old civilization, etc).
I've seen videos of "The Walking Dead Destinies" that brought up this game. Oddly enough, that and this game were published by the same studio, "GameMill Entertainment". GameMill also published the now infamous "Gollum" game, as well as an "Avatar: The Last Airbender" game. Sounds like this studio is the new "LJN".
An apt name for a company that puts quantity far above quality.

If I remember correctly, there was an other tie in game for King Kong on the Xbox over a decade ago which was actually pretty fun. Can you do an honest trailer for that game?
If you're talking about the King Kong movie tie into the Peter Jackson film, the reason the game turned out so great, outside of being directed by the same guy that directed the Rayman games and Beyond Good & Evil, is because Jackson was a producer for the game and a video game aficionado.

2023 has been a bizarre year for video games. On one hand you have the remakes of System Shock, Dead Space and Resident Evil 4, Tears of the Kingdom, Marvel's Spider Man 2, Alan Wake 2, Super Mario Bros Wonder, Pizza Tower, Baldur's Gate 3, Star Wars Jedi Survivor and Street Fighter 6.
But on the other hand you have Forspoken, Redfall, The Lord of the Rings Gollum, Starfield (although some could argue it is a good game),The Walking Dead Destinies, Skull Island: Rise of Kong and The Day Before. It became the war of good and bad games.
TBH Starfield is really more in the middle, its neither terrible nor exceptional. It just gets memed more.
This game is what makes Starfield look like Game of the Year, and this game isnt even the worst game of the year

Interestingly, the Kong game made after the Peter Jackson movie was actually one of the best licensed games I ever played.

The bummer about this is that I would love a whole game set on Skull Island where you play as Kong becoming the proverbial King of the island. But I'd want one that was good.
If Blizzard can charge $21usd for a single character skin then, yes, a horror show full-ass video game that has this level of shlock packed in such a short package can indeed be $40.

The funny thing is, gorillas can't even form fists, so King Kong isn't punching his enemies, he's SLAPPING THEM.
This game is not based on the Monsterverse films; it's based on a 2005 novel Kong: King of Skull Island.
They showed no MV clips of note.

At face value, the story premise sounds like "Gorilla Batman!", but deep down I know this would not have worked out even if they had gone that direction.

There is really no excuse for a licensed game to be in this state in this day and age. Good licensed games are VERY MUCH A THING nowadays. Spongebob Battle For Bikini Bottom, The Simpsons Hit and Run, The Batman Arkham Series, Ducktales, Hogwarts Legacy, Mad Max, Alien Isolation, Injustice, The Ubisoft South Park Games, The Middle Earth Series, Kingdom Hearts, Epic Mickey, The Insomniac Spider-Man Games, VARIOUS Star Wars Games like KOTOR and the Star Wars Jedi Games, AND ALL The Travelers Tales Lego Games have repeatedly proven that! The difference is that they knew that just having a recognizable name attached to it WASN'T ENOUGH and that they NEEDED good gameplay to back that up! But one thing many people or publishers don't realize or acknowledge is that stuff like all the examples I gave can ONLY happen due to good leadership. Sony and Insomniac knew that rushing the game out the door to meet fan hype/demand WASN'T THE ANSWER and that they needed to take as much time as they need to complete Spider-Man 2, and hey, Wolverine is shaping up to be another smash.
Gamemill, the game's publisher, reportedly rushed this game out within a year. Something that also befell The Walking Dead: Destinies and Avatar: Quest For Balance, of which Gamemill also published and released this year because their philosophy is quantity over quality. HOW IS IT THAT THEY SUCK AT CAPITALISM THIS HARD?!!!
Now if a slip up only happened once or twice, this wouldn't be a big issue. You can make a few mistakes when putting out a good game, it's easy to screw up. But Gamemill just keeps making the EXACT same mistakes (1-year deadline and quanity over quality) DESPERATELY HOPING AND PRAYING IT WOULDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN THE NEXT TIME THEY DID IT!

So unless one of the higher ups gets replaced or someone gets a Buddha-level epiphany, we can only hope that they do better in the future. Unfortunately, given the stubbornness of some publishers and companies, that just isn't the world we live in. So it is with fated breath for now that I hereby dub Gamemill Entertainment "The New LJN."
