      It's not like everyone who doesn't do it is too lazy too. Maybe they didn't think it was important until now, or they didn't know how, or they didn't know what being healthy can do for a person. Better late than never tho.

    Thank you for this, my walls were falling and I was allowing myself to dull down in life losing my edge and discipline. After fasting for 24 hrs and hearing this, great reset.

      Always continue to challenge yourself friend. 24 hour fast = good reset. Next do 72 hours. My longest was 9 days (with 8 oz compressed vegetable juices 2 times a day)

    I have to say, after reading Jocko's books and implementing these practices to my team's at work. I have had a tough time trying to explain to the owner what extreme ownership is and why it's important and crucial to implement. I found this clip and shared it to the owner and explained it the same way to my team's and I have seen a major turn around in the productivity of meetings, and time spent on job's.

    Listening to this it feels like the "good old Sündenbock-mentality". Here in Germany this culture it is very common to blame others instead reflecting yourself and have the courage to see your own mistakes and resolve it somehow. It seems those kind of people won't go forward ever. Well, obviously they won't learn out of own mistakes. I don't know what they fear. Maybe they learned to be punished for every mistake and found out to blame it on others.
    Thanks you two for your podcast, found it a couple days ago and started watching it, because I was first interested in the black/white picture aesthetic 😊now can't stop listening.

    A lot of the questions Jocko gets on Extreme Ownership could be solved if his followers understood fundamentals. "Extreme Ownership" is essentially a fundamental that says "you should take responsibility for everything that goes on in your life if you decide that it affects you enough."

    They say, "There's no I in Team."
    It only functions well when everyone involved contributes to the collaborative ownership of the solutions to every obstacle, problem, dysfunction, tribulation and quid-pro-quo.
    Supervisors contribute what they think (hope) will add to their people the ability to resolve issues and think for themselves in the field. Subordinates contribute their own efforts (and occasional ideas) to TRAIN and become better at thinking for themselves... solving the issues and problems so they don't keep piling up. TOGETHER Everyone Achieves More solutions, More projects, More missions, etc...
    No matter how complicated the hierarchy, from the lowest "ranks" to the highest, everyone has a hand in the failure. Everyone has hands in running into problems... and eventually getting to a resolution for every single one of those problems. SO it only makes sense that "rather than playing the blame game", contributing a portion of the solution that each one of them CAN contribute, and focusing on creating opportunities for a PRO-active approach to the next variation of the problems.
    Retro-actively a RE-active approach is only ever going to be "mop up" and "blame"... AND more people die of shame than of just about anything else. Too busy pointing fingers or asking "why me?" to bother putting energy in "what the hell are we going to do about it?"... AND trust me, "What the hell we're doing about it..." is a hell of a lot more interesting and fun than crying about "why me?" ;o)

    I was (and still am) in an environment that doesn't encourage extreme ownership.
    What Jocko says is a beautiful and inspiring thing. However, it only works when EVERYONE takes responsibility.
    You know what happens when you have a team of 10 and 3 people don't take ownership? Let's say that a problem arises.
    2 people look at the problem. Hm, how should we solve that problem? Ok, that's do this and that.
    5 people agree and follow. "Hey those two are pretty good. I'll support them."
    What do the 3 remaining guys do? They say "Goddamnit those two guys fucked up and now they have to solve their own shit? Man, incompetent employees are everywhere!! What do we have to do to get good help????"
    Gossip gossip gossip. The five people get influenced. "Oh....so those two guys were the ones who caused the problem. That's why they took responsibility."
    And the two guys get a bad rep FOR HELPING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
    What happens in future? The two guys either step aside or ARE FINGERED WHEN ANOTHER PROBLEM ARISES!!!
    "Oh look, another issue. Probably it's those two guys who caused it again! What fuckups!! HEY BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD, YOU CAUSED THIS. NOW SOLVE IT."
    That's what happened around me. That's why I don't try to help in teams.
    I TRY TO SOLVE MY OWN PROBLEMS IN MY LIFE AND IMPROVE MYSELF.
    I STEP ASIDE AND STAY INVISIBLE WHEN IN A TEAM.

      That seems to be a problem with horizontal power structures. I don't think that would arise in a more vertical structure (1 of the 10 is a designated leader)

    I typically think of it as a delineation between who is responsible vs who/what caused the issue. I'm a commander and there are often several dozen to a hundred people who might have caused an issue, but I am the one responsible for the issue. More importantly, myself and several dozen to a hundred people typically can do something to prevent or mediate the issue.

    The name "Extreme Ownership", or as it's commonly known "taking responsibility", is misleading.
    What people want is competance. The ability to communicate effectively, handle situations well, and to learn fast from mistakes so that future problems of the sort can be avoided, etc. In every case of what Jocko describes as the intended version of "extreme ownership" is simply being consistently competant and contributing value in ideas or actions. But the thing about that is you don't need to "own" any kind of responsibility in order to contribute value. You can be anybody within the chain of command with any level of responsibility, but if you can know what you're talking about and offer smart reasoned opinions you can be seen as competant. And you'll soon find yourself promoted for it.
    If, in the debrief of that friendly fire tragedy, one of Jocko's men on the bottom of the chain of command had also offered some future protocol solutions, he would just as surely have been considered for a promotion for showing that he could offer useful intelligence, despite having at the time the most basic level of executive authority, the smallest claim to owning responsibility for what happened.
    Value is useful. Blame is not.

      extreme ownership is a short, easy mantra that helps quell the instinct to blame and can serve as an exemplar for others up and down the chain when implemented. It trains you to look at your own mistakes, hopefully highlighting what you have control over and set the ball rolling towards a solution. Sure, you may not NEED to own the responsibility for that to happen, but taking ownership greatly increases the odds of that boulder rolling in the right direction.

      You don't know anything about people. Taking responsibility and offering sound ideas is a good way to get yourself fucked double-quick. In the military and corporate world, the most competent subordinates aren't chosen for promotion, but are targeted for destruction. The only "leadership" characteristics that are valued are the abilities to lie, manipulate, and pass the buck.

    It's a very similar circumstance in business/wall street/finance. The buck never stops. A rolling loan gathers no loss until ultimately, they push their losses onto the American public with currency inflation. The casino never closes because they are now under the impression that sovereign debts will never effect the currency itself.

      Fast and furious wasnt logically flawed those people who wanted weapons will get a weapon, they are in abundance so why not make sure it's one of yours that you can track, but then people get a hold of this info and shit themselves thinking "oh no that's so wrong those people are bad" but the outcome would've been the same either way.

    I'd LOVE to see what Jacko think about "Over There". The tv series that was on FX for a season. Bunch of grunts and then they have to help the others military to help them, etc. I'm watching his interview with Joe Rogan right now and damn. Lots of what he's talking about reminds me of that show. I'd LOVE to see a reaction even in the slightest to that show. For some reason, it seems like one of the best military based shows I've ever seen. I saw his 2 reaction videos to movies but this was a TV show. Anybody else want to see that?

    I lived by the extreme ownership and accountability principles for a few years. It ended up biting me in the ass and taking accountability for other peoples shit ended up making me take a few write up for guys under me. Before long, everyone assumed I was a shitbag that "always got in trouble" and everyone else was too happy to use me as a guy to push onto the sword.
    If you hold yourself to a higher standard, don't expect other people in your organization to live up to that standard. There's a chance they'll use it against you if it serves them.
    Tl;Dr
    If you're the only guy taking ownership, every other guy is gonna take advantage of that to fuck you over.

    Listen, I’m suicidal- no gf, no family close to me, no friends that uphold my virtues..just lost my job.. but I CANNOT quit. I don’t know why. I’m a hiker and in shape and last time I stood over the mountain with one foot out thinking it would just be so easy to take that extra step..but goddammit there’s that piece of shit voice in my head that just calls me a coward every time I have these thoughts.     I was wondering if you could do a podcast on how to identify weakness and or areas that you need to improve, i believe I do want to know what I’m weak In because I then can be a better version of myself. I was wondering if you had any tips to identify weakness in yourself, because it’s very easy to see weakness in other but harder to see see weakness in yourself. But love your work Thank you

    I wish our current president would take extreme ownership of this crisis and offer clear solutions instead of blaming local and state leaders. I guess the specter of being fired (voted out) is too great of a risk, so contradicting his own administration and playing the blame game is a tactic he must resort to.

    the truth? to all men serving in the united states of america that have children. because the work that youve done is such so little worth to our country i had to pay with my own works profits for every bite of food your children have eaten because what you earned our country was honestly never enough to feed them. it was me who has paid every last drop of water and the fluid in every bottle. that was my sweat and my engineering expertise and my individual strength that had to pick up the tab so your babies wouldnt starve to death. their fathers only lost money and bankrupted their families. ive been more of a father to your kids than you. i paid for the roof and the food. thats the actual financial truth. you can tell them im their step dad who looked out for them more than their biological father ever had. sadly its true.
