  • Atherton is the largest service centre at the heart of the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland, Australia. The town was first settled by Europeans in the early 1880s as a camp for cedar-cutters. It was first called Prior’s Pocket. Later, in 1885, it was surveyed and renamed Atherton after John Atherton who drove cattle into the area. Town lots were sold in 1886. Atherton became a stopover point from the coast to the Herberton tin fields.
    In 1903 the Post Office replaced the receiving office which was established in 1889.
    In the 1880s substantial Chinese population lived around the town working the rich soils of the area producing vegetables for the miners.
    Over the years Atherton has been the centre for a number of industries on the Tablelands. The rich, red volcanic soils of the area (estimated to be over 30-m deep) have been used to produce maize, potatoes, peanuts, macadamia nuts and avocados. The town has also been important to the local dairy industry with a butter factory opening in 1909 and a large dairy co-operative
    The Atherton Magistrate’s Courthouse was constructed in 1941 and was used as a wartime hospital for officers during World War II and has air raid bunkers beneath the building

    This is what I love about a small town, friendly people,great pies and the chilled pace. If old mate rode like that in Brisbane he'd have 6 cars up his arse sweeping side to side,especially from Logan folk.
    I intend to be in Atherton in 3 weeks enjoying a very slow roadtrip by campervan taking a few days to drive up from Brisbane. I intend to leave all of the city behind and embrace the fresh air,friendly folk and quietness...I hope hahaha.
    Getting a feel via vids like these. Thanks boss

      Hi there, Nate. Take your time coming up, there's heaps to see on the way up and a number of free camping spots, such as Calliope, on the northern side of the Calliope River. Another is on the northern side Gin Gin, in the mornings a Coffee vendor sets up his van there and makes some awesome coffee. Enjoy. Keep well and stay safe. Cheers

      @@Moz42 Thanks for the heads up and friendly reply Moz. My neighbours and I book our Jucy van this week for 12 days. Gonna get to your neck of the woods in 4 days not pushing it in 2.
      My mate used to live in Atherton and still raves about it smiling. I can't wait to eat fresh food,local milk and cheese I hope . Be knocking back a few on my afternoon shift from driving hahaha. Hope the weather holds but it's TNQ so.....
      I'm aiming to pull up at locals free spots for the nights but also budgeting for non powered sites if we must. We are happy to spend and support our state ,especially roadside farmers etc. Can't wait. Again thanks and I'm happy to subscribe as you're vids give a great pov perspective.

      What is it like there? I'm thinking of buying a few acres and property. It look great. Your right about the traffic here and Logan etc this place looks like a place to live out the rest of days.

      I live in Brisbane but was born and raised in Atherton. I love that I can say there are no traffic lights in my hometown. I’ll retire back on the Tablelands. Home of the Ngadjon people. Great video, thank you 😊

    Nice work on the video. Orderly town, the angle parking is interesting would provide lots of work for some surveyor. Didn't see any tall buildings, any reason for that? Thanks for sharing.

    • @Moz42
      @Moz42  6 лет назад

      Thanks, Maurieo. Not sure about the building, although I could say "because there isn't any tall buildings"???? :-) The tallest is the hospital at 3 floors. I've been away for the past 5 days, flew to New South Wales for a mates 60th birthday. I'll play catch up with everyone over the next few days. Cheers
