You have no idea how much headache you just saved me! I definitely recommend leaving the transmission installed! Remove the wheel and inner wheel well and you have direct access. Also, simply pry the bearing out as far as possible, remove the clip, and grip with a large pair of vise grips, pull and tap the centre shaft lightly. Swith between this method and light prying, It takes about 100 hits but will slowly come out in not too much time. Be careful not to mushroom the shaft, i was impatient and hit to hard, having to grind the end of the shaft down and fight with it for hours.
That worked so slick thank you for your for putting this fix on the web not one shop in my town would touch that transmission thanks to you I was able to fix it my self
Thanks for posting. I just picked up a Patriot yesterday with what I believe to have the same bearing problem. Haven't even brought it in the garage yet. I planned on having to drop the trans, and it was going to be a winter project for me. You just confirmed what I read earlier today about accessing that cover plate.
Do you know what the part number is for the counter balance bearing? Or do I just need 2 of the same? 5013634AB is what I am finding for the rear Input shaft.
The noise is gone now. Bleeding the clutch is a pain in the butt without a power bleeder or vacuum pump. I recommend trying to do it with the transmission in the vehicle. You can access the cover just by taking off the left front wheel. Have an extra hand to help you during the part that you pry the bearing out. It can be a little tricky.
I really appreciate this video. I just replaced the clutch set in a 2010 Patriot. Put the 2.8 qts of transmission fluid and then clutch fluid back in. Same whinning noise... I knew it had to be those input shaft bearings. This video solidified my belief. Thanks man. 😎
Hi thanks for the video. My 08 manual Patriot AWD was making a rattling type noise during acceleration. Took it to the mechanic he didn't do anything. Few months later the ABS light came on, so the problem was misdiagnosed and the mechanic replaced a wheel bearing. But after I came back home, it started making a whizzing noise, there was a burning smell and it gave away completely. Now it's not even shifting/engaging the gear and acting like it's on first even though it's on neutral. The mechanic is now saying it's the transfer case, but I'm not sure. Sorry about the long post, but if you could shed some light on this it will be very very helpful. Thanks again.
Wow it's extremely accessible on my 2012 patriot manual 5 spd trans..... that's exactly what my issue is on my vehicle....I can't wait to take that cover off and replace the bearings, thanks for the video
Hi, I've got a 10 Compass with th t355 in it and it's having a whine through gears when in motion. Also a bit of grinding going between 2-3rd and occasionally pops out of 5th. My initial thought was syncros or gears, but now I wonder if just the bearings being bad would cause this?
@@thumperpop1999 this bearing was a constant noise under power or anytime the clutch was engaged. The grinding between gears and popping out would have me lean towards synchros. There is a kit (or at least there was at the time I made the video) that has all that in there. It could be a bit of a pain and may be better in the long run to look into a Jasper or other reputable reman unit.
Cool Vid. I'm working on a Neon t-350 5 Speed. After watching this video. I'll check that bearing out, hopefully. I'm not sure if it's the same. My Trans has a left side moan like a bad wheel bearing sound. New Wheel Bearing did not change the sound. Right side is quiet. I have it out and I'm thinking Differential Bearings or floating Spider Gear Pin that's rubbing. Since it's dedicated to the Left Side. I don't think the Input Shaft Bearing is the Issue. Might be a good Idea to check/change It, Though. There's not much out concerning Chrysler FWD 5 Speeds. Thanks. God Bless, C.
Hello, I have an 08 jeep compass with the t355. It is hard to get into 1st and reverse. Any ideas on my problem. I guess something is broken inside there. Thanks
Thanks for tips and video. Has anybody done a clutch on these? I was told by a couple of local shops,( one being specifically transmissions) that they couldn't do anything with mine because of a very expensive special tool that was needed and that I had to go to the dealer for repair. I did replace one bearing about 30k miles ago using this method. Worked great but noise is back. I want to do a clutch but not sure about diffuculty or said special tool if necessary to do a clutch replacement.
It's a bit of a pain in the butt the way I did it in my garage instead of a shop with a 2 post lift. But I used no special tools. I think the place you took it to just didn't want to do it. Take out the cv shafts, transfer case (if AWD), and then you can pull the transmission out the top with a cherry picker. (Several motor mounts will need to be removed so have a jack under it or a bar across the fenders to support the weight) That makes it the easiest to install the new clutch. Bleeding the clutch is probably the "most difficult" part, or at least the most annoying part. Remember to properly torque bolts in steps on the flywheel and clutch.
@ next question I’ve got it done with the transmission in the car. Do y’all think maybe I additive for the transmission fluid cause I just don’t see how regular transmission fluid well obviously it ain’t working with the bearings. I think it washes the grease right out of the bearings is what happensso I’m gonna try some additive to maybe help it lasts a little longer. What do y’all think?
Great video, thanks! I have a 2014 Patriot 2.4 with the 5 speed 102K miles. Clutch is flawless, but just started to hear a whine when in gear with clutch out, stops soon as clutch is engaged or in neutral.............?
A whine is evidence of gear noise, a growl or humming is evidence of bearing noise. If there is a whine through the gear set (all gears) check your manual transmission fluid level and condition. Low level of lubrication and old broken down gear oil will lose its capacity to clean and lubricate and will cause this symptom. If the noise is a growl and is audible in any gear with the clutch (out/engaged) you will want to have the rear output shaft bearing looked at. If the transmission makes a grinding noise through all gears you will want to have your input shaft bearing looked at. If the transmission growls though all the gears but is quietly heard or no longer evident in 4th gear (direct drive / where the input and output shaft rotate together) you will want to look at your rear input shaft bearing.
@@t.switzer8207 thank you. I took to a reputable shop and they pulled it. Good news bad news.... good news clutch and all gears are as new. Bad news all 3 sets of bearings were starting to pit. Hey great video and information I do have same transmission my issues is leaking just right on the axel drive side I did replaced the seal but still leaks badly what do you recommend? thanks
I had a similar issue, mine was the case of the seal leaking. I spread some gasket material around the perimeter of the seal where it contacts the case and it solved my issue. If your seal leaks where it contacts the axle, you may need another seal. Or, if the axle is damaged or worn maybe look into a new axle.

@@dozersgarage5420 I will do that and inform you of the result thank you 🤝 remains for me to find a solution to the reverse gear sometimes it does not engage easily.
I’m having a similar problem with my 2011 5 speed, we had already located the issue to be the bearings, so we pulled the cover off to kinda take a look into them and see and we found some weird stuff, one of the holes the bolt that hold the cover on were in started leaking transmission fluid(about a quart) when we took it out and the bearings just appeared in a state of absolute anarchy, and we found something super weird, there was a twisted piece of metal about 4.5 inches long with a small fork on one end in the space behind the bearing and we have absolutely no idea what it is or where it came from. Any ideas?
That is in every one. I'm not 100% on purpose, but I think it has something to do with oil flow. I just put it back in how it came out, and haven't had any issues.
190k miles? My 2014 patriot only has 21,000 miles, and the manual transmission is shot. It started as gear whine and progressed. It goes into the dealer tomorrow morning.
It was redone at 85k when we purchased it as well. The whole thing only lasted about 20k more after this repair was done. Something else in the trans let loose. Decent vehicle, other than rebuilding the front suspension 3 times and the trans twice, and the sunroof drains multiple times. I know that sounds like a lot but it got my wife through college and then some so it didn't owe me anything once it got put out to pasture.
I didnt even bleed the clutch i just put a stick on the pedal and left it pushed down for a while with the res full of fluid and then kept going and slowly pushing the pedal to the floor and back and i guess the air worked its way back out the top cause it works fine now
I got my sisters truck which is an 08 patriot 2wd and manual same situation and I been arguing with my buddy who owns a transmission shop that it’s a countershaft bearing and he asks me have you ever rebuilt a manual tranny? I’m like umm your father trained me dope and he’s telling me the case is bad
I would start with the two bearings there. Easily accessed behind the cover on the left side. Remove the left front tire for easier access. Basically the same transmission, just without the "transfer case".
Ok, apparently I can't post a picture in a comment, but you can totally do this with the trans in the car, and the noise is gone. See my pinned comment.
Were you not able to get the snap ring off as Dozer explains in this video? I have not attempted it yet, but read somewhere to try taking the outer seal off to expose the bearings. Using a jaw puller to pull it straight off of the shaft.
