    The Kaleidescape shop should be a stand alone thing so you can download bit perfect movies to your own hard drive without being locked into their overpriced hardware. $25k for 88TB is not realistic. I can build a NAS for a little over 10% of that cost.

    • @dan_hitchman007
      @dan_hitchman007 2 года назад +13

      The studios will not allow that to happen. In fact, anti-piracy was a sticking point with KScape a few years back and they almost lost studio support. Now, they can only allow you to download into their closed, proprietary ecosystem. If you sell your gear, your movies must be wiped from the hard drives, losing you big money investments in your collection.

    • @zjweele13

      @@dan_hitchman007 That is why i have my own NAS with 4k blu ray rips. Still a couple of thousand and counting because of new movie releases, but it is the one thing i am missing in the market. A digital movie store that actually has the bit perfect movies.

      @@zjweele13 Their files are not exactly bit perfect. They further compress studio sourced ProRes mezzanine files just like what is done with a Blu-ray disc prep. Just no Dolby Vision MEL or FEL files. They end up being very similar to a disc, unless you run across the occasional lousy Studio Canal compressed disc, where the KScape file may not have visible macroblocking.

      @@dan_hitchman007 ok, are the movies you download from Kaleidescape able to be watched on your Kaleidescape server without it being connected to the internet. • @dan_hitchman007
      @dan_hitchman007 2 года назад +3

      @@number1pappy As long as the initial download is on your purchased hardware and account, you only need to be connected for firmware updates. There is still some question as to how long you can remain untethered from the KScape internet server before certain DRM key licenses have to be renewed.

    I wanted one of these systems in the worst way for a while. Almost pulled the trigger a few times. Then I got into a media player and NAS combo which filled my appetite and I’ve really enjoyed it. It really got me to thinking about what I would be paying for with K. And it really came down to one feature which was early access to lossless movies. Even the instant download wasn’t a big deal to me bc I rarely watch an anticipated movie on release day. 95% of the time it comes on a Tuesday or Wednesday and I’ll watch it over the weekend. Now, having that movie a month earlier is definitely appealing though. The question was just how much is that feature worth? Is it worth thousands of dollars to not have to wait 4 weeks? So, I finally put the idea of buying in to K out of my mind. The Media Player/NAS combo gets you so close for a fraction of the price where it was just hard to justify. I do still wonder about the quality though. A lot of talk about the mezzanine file and “better” quality, but I think I’d be surprised if there’s a noticeable difference there.
    Nonetheless, still a very cool and unique product.

      I think for non-hobbyists that have home theaters in their homes, Kscape also helps automate some of the more complex aspects of a home theater like masking systems, For a hobbyist, the NAS system is probably the way to go imo, but for someone who wants something turn key then Kscape is a solution.

    • @danielwander605
      @danielwander605 2 года назад

      @@commanderrussels2612 Some of those features are super cool, but I look at them more as a bonus rather than a selling point. I’ve got a relatively simple masking system with a motorized roller shade and I really wanted to make it where with a single button I could lower or raise the mask and activate the lens shift preset on the projector. In the end I couldnt make that happen so it remains a two button press, but to have it where it does all that on its own would absolutely raise the cool the factor to another level. Theres absolutely a lot to love about the K system but there’s also some catches or negatives also. I once read a post from an owner who I think summed it up pretty good when he said it’s not something you stretch to buy. If you can afford it without thinking then go for it, but if you have to save up for a while or stretch to afford it then its not worth it.

    Why they are keep saying they have a better audio ? Compared to what ?
    Audio on blu-ray and on UHD BD is lossless meaning identical to the studio master.. they can argue about the picture quality but the Audio is the same compared to blu-ray unless they get a different mix which I doubt ..

      I've been to their booth a few times over the years. They actually used to say they had better audio than Blu-ray, but that was not true. They normally get the same lossless audio tracks that appear on disc. Sometimes their files are even missing the lossless immersive tracks from the discs. They are seemingly now comparing themselves to streaming, which uses lossy compressed audio.

    • @jbird_inc
      @jbird_inc 2 года назад +4

      I assume he means compared to traditional streaming services such as Netflix or Amazon prime as I’m sure there isn’t that much difference in audio from Blu-ray/4K disc or bitrate from the 4K disc

      It's mainly snake oil over UHD-BR for most users, tho these guys do get the theatrical cut and master which means the color grading and audio master they get is designed for cinemas which often mean high dynamic range for the audio and more separated channels, the color grading it also meant for cinema projectors so it can have slight improvement if your home cinema setup is really built around mimicking actually cinema then you might have slightly better results but I'm pretty sure any differences in color grading could be compensated for in calibration.
      For their cheapest offering you'll have to spend $6K on a 6TB server and another $3K on the player since they've discontinued their all in one products, they also tend to discontinue their products and heavily push their customers to upgrade and the biggest issue is that you do not own the library if they go out of business or the studio pulls out the movie your purchases are gone and happened with other "premium streaming/home cinema" providers before.

      They are very close to 4k and regular Blu-ray discs. You may run across a rare file with a lot bigger bitrate, but that's normally going to be newer 4k files from a studio like Disney as they insist on using BD-66 discs even if the movie is longer than two hours. They're cheap SOB's.

    • @bluewombat
      @bluewombat 2 года назад +1

      The playback quality will always be as good or better than the disc equivalent, but ultimately BD is a mostly lossless format, same with UHD, unless you get into movies that wouldn't fit on a 100gig disc, then they're per definition lossy on the disc, while still lossless on Kaleidescape, Står Wars is a good example of this.
      You also need to factor in that you need a really really good disc player to get even somewhat comparable performance.
      I have 2 Oppo 205 and 1 Sony X1100ES, neither deliver as good video as my Kaleidescape, they come very close, but not as good.

    Like a lot of people the price of the kit is a bit of a stubling block for me. However for me in addition and perhaps more of a concern is the fact that you can not sell the movies on despite the fact that you have purchased and "own" them. If at some point you want to move on from Kaleidescape and so decide to put your kit up for sale you can only sell it empty all the movies you have purchased are in effecct worthless as they can not be played on anything else or be sold unlike discs etc. In my view this is totally wrong yet it seldom gets talked about.

Features such as triggering aspect ratios for electric projector masking screens, triggering lighting scenes to turn on the lights when the movie is paused and clean integration with the main home automation control systems are more important than price for the types of private theaters they will be used in. Kaleidescape is often installed with other sources such as Apple TV and Cable boxes which cater for general movie streaming.

It is hard to justify the cost of this system in comparison to the audio/video quality of 4k Blu-ray players/discs. No money on movies? Almost believeable with the hardware pricing.
    I built my 48tb nas for under $2k
    So under $4k for 88tb...what do they charge if thier 22tb is running $11k??
    Worse...you don't own anything. Physical disc is yours. However with this...you simply have encrypted files....until the company goes under or pulls a wb
    No thanks

      Very good points! It looks like a pretty cool idea but is it really that much better quality than a 4K disc? Also, like you said, why does 22TB have to cost $11k? Probably ordinary drives modified so you have to use theirs instead of regular off the shelf drives. Hard to respect a company that does that.

      Some would say the same for a sports car, a luxury watch or any other expensive item. Reality is there are plenty of people that are willing to pay for the best quality audio and video, convenience of managing their movie collection in a turn key solution. Everyone has to decide for themselves if it’s worth it for them but just because we don’t think it should cost that much, doesn’t make it not worth it for someone else.
