4k for 1tb player! they are still out of their minds! This should cost 1000 dollars at most and that is being generous. I thought maybe they would be egregious and charge 1500, to 2000 but I did not expect 4 grand. just insane.
Price dropped over 50% over night. Lots of other solutions you can get for $1000, have fun.
Yes they are greedy.
They have a product people want, just like other luxury products. I’m still waiting for Rolex to put me into one of their watches for $1000. 😝
This should have had a 4TB SSD. Then it would be an instant purchase for many.
@@GurgenPB2you can delete and redownload any movie you have purchased within 10 min. So HD size shouldn’t really matter for this device
Dolby Vision tag is showing for multiple films on the store now
Yeah, that was fast!
Filter by Dolby Vision - 141 films so far
The cost is not what’s in the box is their great licensing agreements.
Most people still dont classify 4k as an affordable entry point. Some youtubers have said this. I dont remember if this was said here. Maybe not.
Lower price point is the most accurate statement.
It's still not affordable or justifiable for an average enthusiast. Baby steps, baby steps.
More affordable than before, I agree, but $4k is still $4k. Still doesn't fit the budget for many.
I'll get one for living room setup and will test it out before I make change from C in the theater as the player.
Yeah, I'm eager to try one out firsthand myself too with similar intent.
This does sounds like a smart move to get some hesitant buyers on their platform, once you buy a movie, can you download then delete and redownload at a later time? Basically offloading the storage back to them.
Yes, I used movie cycling in my Kaleidescape for years as I've long had many more movies than I have storage. Once you own a movie, you are free to delete and redownload again later as you see fit. If you're interested, message me at jaremy@techthusiasm.net.
Hello, I am new to Kaleidescape products. I am glad they lower the price of their products to fit the middle class people like me. Don’t get me wrong, it is still kind of expensive to some people. However, I see a NAS system in the background if there is a way to connect the NAS to the Strato V. I dont think I am ready to invest to the Terra system yet. Let’s say if I don’t have enough storage space, how do I retrieve the purchased movies from them. I am currently using a 4K ATV and I don’t need storage for that, just log in to Disney plus purchased folder to navigate. How much per movie is it? Thanks
Hello! Yes, I use the NAS for a few things, but not with the Kaleidescape. K is a closed system so it cannot connect to other storage devices outside of itself.
When having more movies than you have storage space, it's no problem in K. I've had way more movies than my storage for years. You can freely download owned content as much as you'd like. No extra charge and fuss, and you kick off the downloads right off your phone or computer. Movies range from $5 to $40. $5 for the least expensive D2D offers and $40 for the latest movies still in theaters from some studios. They frequently run sales and bundle discounts.
We can chat offline, and I can help you out. Sounds like the V is perfect for you. Reach out at jaremy@techthusiasm.net. Thanks!
Dolby Vision hasn't excited me since the early days. Most people, including myself, can't really tell the difference. I may pick this one up for the bedroom. It should be compatible with my Strato S
Some folks I talk to are really fixed on DV being a requirement to them. I can get you hooked up with a V, just message me at jaremy@techthusiasm.net.
Depends on your tv. On mine the difference vs hdr is huge. It may not matter quite as much if you have you hdr mode professionally calibrated
@@dukajoe Don't get me wrong, it does make a difference, but in my opinion, it shouldn't be the deciding factor.
I think TV getting brighter with better processing have offset some of the value add of DV, but some folks prefer it and want to make sure the feature lights up on their TVs.
@@Techthusiasm We really need 12 bit panels. I think that will make DV stand out
Great entry point - they must have realized cost of gas and eggs went up? Now, how much is a server to attach to this bad boy?
Servers haven't changed in the line-up or price points, but at least we have a fully functional Kaleidescape available for $4k instead of $9k.
@@Techthusiasm they are on the right track! Five years from now Kscape maybe a household name.
Therein lies the BIGGEST problem. The cost of their prop storage. It is a JOKE!!! This will never be mainstream at these prices.
It doesn't need to be mainstream. Mainstream is a Roku at $50.
I might actually pull the trigger now that they have a standalone player. The only thing that worries me is Apple releasing an Apple TV with lossless audio. It may never happen and I will end up waiting for nothing or with my luck it could happen six months after getting the Kaleidscape. Some people say Apple won’t do it but they need to keep innovating and need more “tech words” like lossless for Apple Music. After supporting every video format out there I can see them wanting to say lossless audio next to the Dolby Atmos badge on movies.
We've all been waiting on Apple for a long time now. There's always hope, but no guarantees. WWDC just happened in June, so big news like that might have been announced then but wasn't. If you're interested in the V, reach out to me at jaremy@techthusiasm.net. I'll get you hooked up!
@@Techthusiasm sounds great! I’ll do that if I decide to buy it. Just a question, with only a 10 movie capacity do you think the ssd will fail fairly quickly do to constantly deleting and downloading 100gb movies?
I think the SSD will comfortably outlive the overall tenure of the product. I wouldn't be concerned.
If I ordered the device in Middle east region will it work? or I have to be in US or UK region?
I don't think K is really set up well in that region.
@@Techthusiasm Yeah, I downloaded the app but the library doesn't show without VPN, but I don't think it'll accept the payment with Master/Visa card if it's not US and UK based, That's why I asked about shipping the device Maybe I could bypass the setup app, Maybe Apple TV would be a better choice for Lossless audio content in the future.
Thanks for the info.
Either way, you still got to spend the money anyway, because you still got to get the terra server with it and that's going to set you back about $9-15,000 just for that one package deal anyway and I'm already saving up for it anyhow.
No you don't need a server With the V Model is All in one for About $4000 that's what the big deal is by only holds 10 movies and for me that'll be good enough because you can always download from your library you'll always have the movies in the libraryIt's a good way to start into it then later if you want to add an extender hard drive and get more movies than you could but it's a good starting point for the pricing Isn't bad for a luxury itemPeople that have home theaters that want to have lasts less audioLike me will benefit for something like this it's kind of having a 4K Blu-ray player that pretty much nowadays you can't even find movies if you Want To buy them you have to buy them off of like Amazon andBest Buy doesn't even carry movies anymore this is Probably the best thing now to have
The point of the V is you don't have to have a server. You can cycle ready to watch content with 10-minute downloads on demand. It's stand-alone.
I'm definitely going to buy one now
Contact me at jaremy@techthusiasm.net. Let's go! I'll get you hooked up.
@Techthusiasm ok I'll message you with some more questions about it
@@Techthusiasm thank you
Any word on whether kaleidescape will charge us to upgrade our current movies to Dolby Vision - or will it be a free conversion of our existing purchases once we own a Strato V?
There is no additional charge for DV in the content. Movies are already being updated and put out in the store right now.
So many questions
Will it still support managing lights during credits.
Were do hand over my money.
Message me at jaremy@techthusiasm.net. We can chat and I get you hooked up.
I am somebody that has a TV only system. I have a 6TB Strato S that I got used on eBay (RIP resale value). If I put the Strato S in another room can I use it as storage for Strato V in the way that I would for a Terra server?. In that setup could I still take advantage of the Dolby Vision and Lossless audio features (since my Sonos Arc doesn’t support DTS HD).
We've been chatting and learned that the V will not play content stored off an S alone. There has to be a Terra in the system.
People are still complaining but now the entry point into a Kaleidescape ecosystem is half the cost.
I’m not sure what people are smoking that expected this to be around $1000. It was never going to happen. What people actually want is for K to stop being a luxury product and that just isn’t going to happen.
I’m only a little bummed at the storage capacity but people picking this up probably have sufficient internet speeds.
I think they made a solid move with the V. People will always want more, but this is great.
Have you heard anything about the Strato V being made available in black color, like their latest servers? (In my current setup, the components are visible under the TV, and my silver Strato C stands out like a sore thumb amidst a sea of black components.)
The V is black. It looks more silver in some of the press material but go look on the K web page. It's clearly black. www.kaleidescape.com/systems/movie-players-servers It'll blend perfect. If you want one, reach out at jaremy@techthusiasm.net.
I think it's a great addition and a move in the right direction for Kscape.
I agree!
Get me this with youtube tv, netflix, disney etc streaming, and I'd consider. Right now it is a 2018 shield or a $35 pos stick... Someone please take my money!
It's a bit more than that.
I suppose I am in the minority and don’t share the enthusiasm many do over this offering.
I would submit the offering is attractive but not at that price point. I think there continues to be a tremendous convenience tax for their offerings.
I still am of the opinion they’re a niche platform catering to a niche market. There are many lower cost offerings which maybe are not of the same quality but certainly good enough, especially when they’re available for an order of magnitude less. Just my opinion.
Can I use my Oppo 4k player to connect to my new Kaleidescape Strato V to get disc to digital offers?
I do not expect that to work. Has to be a PC style drive, not a commercial player.
@@Techthusiasm Thank you so much for your quick reply.
If you want to discuss more about K and the V, reach out at jaremy@techthusiasm.net and we set up a phone call. I'm happy to answer any questions and get you hooked up if you think you want one.
@@Techthusiasm Oh, thanks. I appreciate it. But that answers all my questions.
I just purchased a 4TB Samsung 990 PRO NVME drive on Amazon for $299 for my PC. I am a K-Scape owner. I like it a lot! But they need to do a little more to bring this down to the masses. Amazing experience in a dedicated home theater, but price needs to be around $1495 or lower. It all comes down to licensing with the studios IMO.
No way in hell that the masses would buy this brand even at a cheaper price. They go for a stress free and simple option - the Apple TV 4K which simply streams from apps, streams from your computer or streams from AirPlay which being able to access content on multiple devices such as MacBook Pro, iPhone and iPad. That's what the masses including me want after a 12 hour day in management! Not tinkering. You have to remember that home cinema/AV/Audio enthusiasts are an unusual breed whilst the majority are super happy with a zen like experience from an Apple TV.
They went from $9k to $4k, so that's a big step in a good direction to bring more people into the platform. We'll see if and when they go further.
@@Techthusiasm Not really, you got 8GB for $9K. So it's not a direct comparison. Yes, it's a lower $$ entry point into the ecco system, but not the same, not even the same interface. I am probably going to pick one up and give it a try. But I am expecting incremental improvements over my bit for bit rips. A 4K rip of Edge of Tomorrow is streaming at 81Gbps., Top Gun Maverick is at 78. I want to be wrong and if I am, I will keep it. They finally incentivized me to try it though, but I will go through someone with a good return policy.
Smart play to check it out. Snag it from Best Buy or somewhere like that and see what you think.
People complaining about Kaleidescape pricing remind me of the same Picasso story I use when people complain about my pricing:
Picasso is sketching at a park. A woman walks by, recognizes him, and begs for her portrait. Somehow, he agrees. A few minutes later, he hands her the sketch. She is elated, excited about how wonderfully it captures the very essence of her character, what beautiful work it is, and asks how much she owes him. “5000 francs, madam,” says Picasso. The woman is incredulous, outraged, and asks how that’s even possible given it only took him 5 minutes. Picasso looks up and, without missing a beat, says: “No, madam, it took me my whole life.”
The cost of the hardware parts is entirely beside the point. You're paying for a specific functionality, not a bag of parts. "I could buy the parts for $300." Ok, go do it and call me when you've built a fully functioning unit, lol.
Picasso then proceeds to buy a Kaleidescape with his profit
@@auleoo Indeed
I agree 100%. Anyone else is welcome to starting building boxes and sell movies on their super inexpensive platform.
@@Zachary_Setzer love it!
Pretty cool addition. A way to buy in without having to shell out the money all at once. I think I would have went this route had it been available when I bought a used Strato 6TB.
If you're every ready to upgrade or add to your system, do reach out and let me know. I think this is a better buy now than a used Strato 6TB, which used to be a very good option to enter the platform which I frequently recommended.
Until Kaleidoscape releases a sub $1,000 player, this is still out of my league. I'm perfectly happy with my Panasonic UB820 + Apple TV 4K for now.
We are down now from $9k to $4k. We'll see if they get to $1k.
@@Techthusiasm $1000 would never happen.
Honestly, a 1Tb NVME drive is between $50-100 for consumer retail pricing and realistically, even the slowest NVME is many, many times faster than the maximum required for this device. Hardware that is capable of handling 4k60 is cheap, The Apple Tv 4k+ is likely the most robust streamer available and you know that at $150 consumer retail pricing, they are making an outsized 'Apple' level of profit. A Roku Ultra at $80 consumer retail pricing is comparable to the Apple at a hardware/processing level and there is enough profit in that $80 to serve the company and the retailer. Software is likely linux like the majority of electrinics so free. I'd be willing to bet the Strato V costs less than $30 to manufacture based on comparable retail pricing including any R&D and all of thier marketing seems to be done at the 'influencer' level which is essentially free. The server side is easily paid for by content sales with another giant chunk of profit. This ecosphere is an INSANE cash cow!
The cost of the hardware is representative of the entire platform and lots of business model elements. You may be oversimplifying it in various ways. But it's an easy decision to avoid the platform if it doesn't appeal to you.
Well, please, enlighten me.
Kscape stuff is great and I can't wait until I start working a third shift everyday to afford their system. Oh, wait I still have to buy groceries. There goes that idea! I wonder if being stupid rich really as great as it seems?
Does Synology NAS work with this Strato V Player ????
No. Kaleidescape is a closed system. It does not store or play movies from outside of itself.
@@Techthusiasm oh okay, thank you
There should be a 2nd HDMI for audio-only then I buy it
The C has dual HDMI. They opted not to include that on the V.
@@Techthusiasm I like the v because it has Dolby vision
If you want one, I'm your guy. Message me at jaremy@techthusiasm.net.
Ordering one tomorrow morning to check out.
Nice! Your old STR is still running strong in my setup. :) Hit me up at jaremy@techthusiasm.net if I can get your order for you.
@@Techthusiasm I am surprised you remembered I sold that to you. When are these shipping?
I remember you for sure! I believe they will start shipping within the week. Orders I placed earlier today did not ship today, and K can often ship same day depending on time.
Zidoo z1000 pro and a NAS combo, still a half price than this Jaremy
True, but that solution still comes with a massive expense of time, complexity, and maintenance as well to rip the content properly and manage the setup. It's a trade-off, but at least the calculus is much improved now.
Too bad they didn't offer two models. A new Stato S+ or V+. I would have paid the extra $2K for a 6GB Drive.
Wow maybe I missed the train that gives you 4K to pay for this. Maybe this sector is out of reach and it will only be DYI builds for myself.
Seems like they were listing to what flat panels owners always wanted.
Yes, this answers a lot of customer request.
123 TB ?
There is a 123TB SSD Terra now, yes. It's for crazy rich yacht owners. :)
