This feature is SOOOOOOOO amazing!
Very exciting update! Definitely gets me closer to considering one, although 4K D2D would probably be a must before I pull the trigger.
Right on. I don;t know if that will ever see the light of day.... but maybe when 8k is a thing.
@@JilesMcCoy 8k will never be a thing!
@@MrBjorn6 I tend to agree with that.
Great video! Glad to see the program get implemented. I do have a question about getting started. My understanding is that you need a Terra server to be able to purchase and download movies. The Strato helps to stream from the Terra in a different room. Do you know if is it possible to start with just a Strato to start scanning and archiving purchased dvd and blu ray titles? It's also my understanding that the Strato allows for movie retnals, so as a starter box seems like the Strato might be a way to go before jumping into the much more expensive Terra box.
At the most basic level you need a player and a storage device. If you can find a Strato S it will perform both duties. The new gear is split into the terra serer (storage only) and Strato C (player only).
I've been waiting for something like this to happen. I was hoping for an app scan like VUDU but I'll take it
Its super cool!
And maybe a first step?
Can you import titles that are not on kaleidescape? There is loads of films not listed on kaleidescape uk so i have to buy the disc
You can catalog but if kscape doesn’t have the film then they just don’t have it.
Will the Kaleidescape systems ever become more affordable? I can't plunk down 10k
I predict it will. But who knows...
Finally!!!
Its a big step forward!
That’s big news what is the cost to do that beside of course buying the hardware
The cost is just the hardware and the upgrade cost. Check out the video.
Kaleidescape is a cool concept but the price is absolutely OBSURD. The cost of streamer hardware R&D is not that much and the Chinese have proven that with Zidoo . I can buy a half of a PB of storage with deduplication capability and drive failover for the cost of this setup. When they come down to earth price wise id gladly consider them. But as to where they are today the extra bits are snake oil.
It’s not snake oil, but it is expensive.
@@JilesMcCoy ok perhaps that was too harsh. But to say the visual quality difference is worth 20k for only 88TB of storage is bonkers. No way can that price be justified in today technical dollars.
What's "obsurd" (sic) is your lack of knowledge of A/V price points. People paid Kaleidoscope prices for CD, DVD & Blu-ray players decades ago. Considering inflation & quality Kaleidoscope is a value.
This may be the future, but it's priced itself out of most of the market. It reminds me of the cost of flat screens in the 1990s. It'll take another 10-15 years??? before the streaming services begin to compete with their own Kscape-like products.
It will be a while before there is a competitor. Most of the focus is on streaming now... not a quality play like Kaleidescape.
Here’s my question
1) let’s say you have 1000’s of DVD’s around 5000 total if I chose to use the D2D features and only care about SD quality for around 1000 of them do I have to pay for them again ? With a small collection it won’t be a massive issue but with one in the 1000’s with what I’ve seen is about $8-20 per movie that could add up quickly.
2 Do DVD’s of all regions work ? And do they have just American movies in their catalog or can they find DVD’s from studios in India or Africa as well ? I’ve lived on 4 continents and have Movies from numerous countries around the world is this just for mainstream American content or does content from anywhere work? Do they content from the 1930’s that has been released on DVD in their store or is it just more modern films?
3) What if they go bankrupt or out of business? Are you stuck with a useless player and such ? For example if I was to use the D2D feature and then trashed my collection and they later go out of business am I SOL ?
4) How does it handle disc that have two movies on them does it correctly identify them ?
If you have thousands of dvds you just keep your thousands of DVDs. Only import and upgrade the handful you will actually watch again. The rest just sit on the shelf like they are now.
@@JilesMcCoy My plan was to use this and then get rid of my physical disc afterwards, but I’m only interested in it if it had every single disc that I own in their catalog.
How does it handle disc that have more than one movie on them ?
Are non American films in their catalog such as Bollywood, Nollywood, Korean, Japanese, Brazilian films etc ?
@@Kev4Kev I doubt that it will have every single disc that you have since you have an extensive dvd collection from other countries. The strategy I use is that I use Kaleidescape for movies that I want to watch specifically in my theater and for new purchase. I still have my old set of discs. I don’t ever really watch any of the old stuff though. It’s more for sentimental value.
Kaleidescape making your purchase more valuable. 😂😂 23 year old company and they still haven’t found a way to sell at a reasonable price. 4K projectors have come down from $40,000 in seven years. But apparently building a movie player with a hard drive is too expensive. Hard to convince the consumer when they can buy an Apple TV for $150. Yes, it’s compressed and yes, it’s not lossless audio but your money won’t be lost either.
They have figured out how to sell at their price, which is the important part for them.
@@JilesMcCoy Oh, then I guess that’s the most important thing. 🧐🧐 What needs to happen is for some competition to come along and throw there world upside down. Then I guess the prices will magically decrease.
@@Losttouchjs A competitor would be super cool! I think that is just a matter of time.
They’re going to get left behind if they don’t reduce their price on storage not even gonna be able to support that price in the future someone else will come and replace them easy maybe Apple
Some market pressure would be interesting to see!
I'm not doing this. It'll make the monsters in horror movies look too realistic and scary. I might have trouble getting to sleep thinking about that stuff.🧟
Waste of money, this company will soon die. Streaming services are taking over.
What makes you think that?
Streaming quality is nowhere near what the Kscape puts out. They have access to the mezzanine files of movies. Steaming will not close.
