  • Here is a Table i built for my friend this week.
    I have never built a Tabletop from Hardwood so this was pretty exciting for me. The Frame is made of Steel and the Bowties are Maple.
    The Bowties are not functional, they are just for decoration and it is the first time I´ve tried it...
    Please let me know what you think about this Project in the Comments and subscribe if you like my Videos.
    Thanks for watching!!!

    The table came out really beautiful, laura, the bow ties are a nice visual addiction :) really like the video structure and composition and the fact that you allow it to breathe a bit for example with smudo or the wood heater. Lovely! Keep it up!

    If the wood expands and contracts with changes in atmospheric humidity, those endboards will have a different (smaller) amount of movement, and your table may be liable to form cracks. Otherwise, neat work!

      @charlesholland6851 8 лет назад +1

    • @wither8
      @wither8 7 лет назад +1

      Maple and mahogany are unique in that the ligand structure of the species allow basically any cut to form furniture just fine. A tangential cut from a straightsawn (the least ideal for constructing furniture as dimensional warpage moves tangent to the rings), a radial from a quartersawn (which at least two of those pieces of stock look to be), even a riftsawn cut will all more or less observe the same moisture warpage. The end-boards are also placed longitudinally to the grain, so she's pretty safe there.
      My real concern would be if the male-male couplers that were in the square bar stock. Hopefully they were used just as aesthetics rather than actually acting as a structural feature. If it was bolted/glued down on all four corners directly to the face of the wood, there'll be tensile/compression loading forces on the wood, and my moneys on the walnut giving out before the adhesive/metal. The traditional way to deal with this issue is to have an intermediary linkage (or uh coupling, forgive my poor terminology... I haven't done any woodworking since high school) between the legs/apron and the face, generally giving 1/8" (~3mm) of expansion at each joint.
      She seems pretty well versed in the craft, I'm betting she took this all into consideration. On the off chance she did secure the top to any of the metal bracing, I'd recommend she unfasten whatever she used and use the one of the more traditional routes. A real hacky fix if bolts were used would be to just oversize the bores' radius by a ten or fifteen thou (uh, Germany..metric...let's guess...a little under .1 mm?) so there's some play.
      Just one note, structurally (even when MIG welding), it's best practice to prep your surface beforehand (in your case, via angle grinder) before laying your root weld in the joint. You don't want any of the pre-existing particulate mass to be embedded in your joint, and if you're welding something like aluminium, the layer of Al_2O_3 will actually prevent you from forming a good weld (if you've ever tried to paint aluminium you've surely experienced this!) TPAI will give ya a hand I'm sure next time you build a weldment. Overall fantastic job! Germany seems like a mecca for the creatives haha!

    Against the advice of many, I have been attaching breadboard ends to panels and tables with biscuits for many years and never had a problem. I, however, do not glue the biscuits into their slots and I go easy on the glue that binds the breadboard to the panel. It must be that this method allows sufficient movement, or that the woods I use, (cherry and walnut), just don't move much.
