An overbite is a dental diagnosis, that implies the problem belongs with your upper jaw... or that you have too many teeth. Extracting teeth, and pulling back your upper teeth then seems the logical solution.
As a jaw surgeon, we look at the problem in reverse. We see that having a small lower jaw, leads to the impression that your upper front teeth are too far forward. So we then make your upper teeth bigger.
Watch "Erin has jaw surgery" to see the effects of corrective jaw surgery for this.
Just watching the change in how happy they looked afterwards has made me so excited for my upcoming surgery :D
Amazing work these professionals do every day around the world
Hey, it's never too late the sooner you get it the better. I'm turning 21 this year and also getting an underbite jaw surgery done. I've asked my surgeon and many orthodontists will recommend the sooner you have it done the better as later on you may come across problems opening and closing your jaw. You're still young so no need to worry. Goodluck!
I can't believe people are having to pay for this surgery :( Luckily the NHS are doing my surgery in a few weeks, but honestly I can't believe insurance companies are saying it just for cosmetics, $25 000 is ridiculous
WHAT?!
Thanks for all the positive comments. The patients themselves are the stars.
Thanks for the positive review. Yes many maxillofacial surgeons do jaw distraction... it is an option that most can offer.
Honestly I’m excited to get braces ad fix my ugly teeth
(I have teeth gaps and a massive overbite)
How was your over bite fixed?
It is rarely a case of the lower jaw being too big. An underbite is more often than not an upper jaw issue, which is corrected by it coming forward. If you are a girl, then bringing the upper jaw forward and the lower jaw backward, whilst balancing the lips, and creating lip fullness is the key to beauty and getting a great smile and bite. You always need to get braces to both jaws anyway.
Does it make your jaw appear
More forward after
Of course boi, it's surgery
Depends on your situation. If u have an underbite they will prolly move it backwards but if u have an overbite prolly forward
Obstructive sleep apnoea and have small jaws has a high association. Upper and lower jaw (bimax) advancement works very well in alleviating this, when performed by skilled surgeons. Watch "Erin has jaw surgery" to find out more Dwight.
So see an experienced orthodontist, specifically trained in surgical orthodontics, do that he can make your orthodontics (and yes you do need them on both upper and lower jaws) maximally effective for your final surgery.
I hope that helps.
Well I hope that everything goes well for you
inter-molar mandibular distraction osteogenesis. Effectively IMDO is a replacement for more classic forms of jaw surgery, where we gently grow the mandible.
Camouflage orthodontics (where the orthodontist has attempted to move teeth in order to camouflage a bad bite caused by skeletal disproportion) can move teeth to positions with poor long term (dental) health problems. Reversing the original orthodontics is more about straightening teeth within their physiological & normal anatomical boundaries, as well as enabling for corrective jaw surgery. Patients can be scared of surgery, but so too can orthodontists, whilst lengthening treatment time.
Good jobs, doctor. I am medical student from Czech republic. Thomas
Imma have jaw surgery after braced and I'm so excited
Yes. They would have to put some appliance in your mouth, like a herbst appliance, or rubberbands. That requires a row of braces on both rows of your teeth.
Well here in London, insurance companies cannot provide for that, they're really just for fall back practices at most unless it's been delivered privately at a cost of course.
Everyone has one best solution. Always speak to an expert in orthognathic surgery, and who is a fully trained oral & maxillofacial surgeon. I hope that advice helps
I wore braces and took them out more than a year ago. My orthodontist didn't discuss jaw surgery, however; my mouth is protruding and I'm hoping to resolve that. Do you suggest I visit an oral and maxillofacial surgeon? other, what do you suggest.. Thank you
What happened? My consult is tomorrow for overbite
Nope... for IMDO there is no prep work at all... in fact braces are only required if you want them. For normal orthognathic surgery, there can be up to 2 years prep work by an orthodontist yes.
there is no cut off age. each case is considered individually
This video makes so really excited for my upcoming double jaw surgery :)
How was your surgery pain wise....I got told I need lower jaw surgery but I haven't fully committed yet
What happened did u get it done
Really incredible outcomes!
My brother needed this surgery and i might need it too but seeing how i saw my brother hurt i'm now scared
I'm planning on getting the surgery done as they have refused me for braces twice now but I dunno where to ask about it =/ I'm somewhat glad it makes cheekbones slightly more pronounced XD
So.... I could have a nicer shaped face if I get my underbite fixed?
do you know of any insurance companies that help pay for orthognathic surgery?
I hav a bad overbite, because my bottom jaw is really small so my front teeth go over my bottom lip. I have had braces 2 years, and I am 13 years old now. There has been some improvement, not much. My teeth still go over my bottom lip. My orthodontist said I will have to have jaw surgery if my jaw doesn't grow.
No. Invisalign will not work
Please read my latest comment on this topic to see the "bigger picture" effects of dental extractions, and "pull back" style orthodontics for correction of a "small picture" dental overbite
typically $2500- $5500 Canadian
Yeah I hope you do well.
Tbey do offer most of these operations in the US. Just look around
I've had braces since 2008. My teeth are almost perfectly straight but I have a very bad overbite. I asked a different orthodontist than my own and he said I'm too old for the herbst appliance and the only way to correct it is this surgery. I'd have to have braces for another year, then get the surgery, then have braces for a year after. I just don't know if it's worth having braces my junior and senior years of high school.
No it will not break at all.
If you need surgery, then you need it. Don't cancel it for god sakes.
The results are really amazing! I too had orthognathic surgery done but I am to undergo braces after two years again for midline alignment. I hope if it's possible...
yes to both
Wow!!! But I'm still not getting surgery!!
Yes. Pushing your lower jaw forward.
omg! i'm soooo going to talk to you about me needing jaw surgery! i have a short lower jaw and it's going to become more obvious when i get older. i hate it a lot but hopefully i will get the surgery
hi doctor thankyou for the answers you are patiently giving to everyone.
I wanted to ask you when during the presurgical treatement is the time to perform surgery on an overbite.
When teeth do not touch in ANY Point? at this stage of my orthodontic treatment, my teeth touch only in my molars....am i ready for surgery?
(surgery treating OSAS, will it help? what is your success rate treating osas)? thanks
Yes it can to both questions
Depends on hoe gentle they are. I'm surpised by the amount of jaw swelling i see in some videos
Momentum, I'm getting braces to years and surgery afterward, they are covering a very large amount
Momentum is excellent
I'm not sure which country you are writing from. I only know of Australia.
Omg, that must had much nicer effect on their confidence, lucky ppl! But it is sooo expensive!!
I can't wait to get me surgery done!!! This is like so emotional to watch, my eyes r like watery hehe i have braces on for like almost four years alrdy!! :|
wish you well
I have waited my entire life for this surgery. I've been called every name in the book (horse face, two face) and cried myself to sleep countless times. Can someone PLEASE let me know of a Dr in Toronto (or nearby) who does corrections for "Long Face Syndrome"? :( I've been looking and I can't find anyone! :(
What happened? Did you get the surgery
your junior/senior years are nothing compared to the rest of your life. i wish i wasnt 34 by the time I had it done
unmistakable face. If anyone in heaven has that face I shall know him again.
do we need to wear braces before going through this procedure? and if so can i wear invisalign instead? and how long do we have to wear them for before we get the surgery?
Hey you're the man!
Girl at 1:25 looks worse after surgery. Surgeon screwed up big time. (Why upturn the nose?)
that's a common side effect that comes with this
Hello! I have had braces before, and now I just got them again Today because I will be getting the jaw surgery to correct my underbite. it's very minor but i do not like my smile. My ortho suggests i bring the top jaw foward because my face is kinda flat. My dentist suggests i bring the top jaw foward and the bottom a little back, but he's would rather pick the bottom jaw than just choossing the top. What would you suggest??? I really like your work!
also, can you explain BiMax surgery?
How com there are problems as you get older? How are you able to pay for this, isnt it costly?
I noticed a bunch of those people now don’t shut their mouth fully at rest in the after photo! That’s a worry!
I have hemifacial microsomia and I am 17 yrs old
could you please tell me what surgeory do i need to do?
Not in the USA
yeah he's a good guy
are you forward jaw posturing?
i have something like Charlotte, only that i have it from a trauma in childhood which seems to have done something on my nerves on the left cheek and i have to do braces and a surgery probably. Can you please give me an idea, how much would this cost(you can say a range so that i can think of what i need to do) i just moved from my country to another and i am not ready to search for doctors here yet. Thank you!
Hi Paul, I need surgery, I've had surgery before in New Zealand but it failed to advance or expand my upper jaw appreciably. I'm still class 3 dentally and skeletally. I don't want to get braces again long term. I just want surgery to move my maxilla forward (6mm) and downwards 3mm. What do you think?
If you need it, it's there to serve you.
I have an overbite. how much would this surgery cost?
How long did wait for your surgery
Hello. This is free for me as it's covered here by my NHS. I've been going to the hospital for yearly check ups for over 8 years now however back then I was too young and they told me they'll wait until I stop growing and then decide and take further action. So I turned 18 and once you turn over 18 here you'd have to pay and yes it is very costly but since I was seeing them for a while about this it was free. My jaw now sometimes clicks if I try to fully open it. It was never like this before.
I have no idea of costs. Its like buying a ferrari. I still dont have a ferrari if i exect to pay the cost of a honda
Do you ever come to the U.S. doc?
sometimes it can be both your upper and lower jaw
Hello Paul, 4 mounts ago(Before i had put my braces on) I had a major overbite it was awful,my teeth were sticking out and i could hardly close my lips...Now i have been wearing my braces for 4 mounts i had 4 of my teeth pulled out and you can already tell the difference i can now close my lips with A LOT less effort and my teeth had retracted it looks nicer now :) But i was wondering for how long will i have to wear these and will i need a jaw surgery ?
i have the same problem and i am wearing braces but im gonna take off my braces this week..will this problem be fixed by braces?
how much does an underbite surgery cost?
does the jaw get screwed together?
And what if someone punches you in the chin, will it break easily?
ive got my free surgery this May but i might cancel it
2:14 that is my issue....I want that operation. seems like my jaw line isn't getting visible though?!
Hello. I'm 15 and have had braces for 3 years and fixed mostly my overbite. They said they couldn't fix my overbite completely though. Can u have this surgery when your braces are already off? I hate my profile and it looks like I have a weak chin
i have a question, the surgery is after brackets?
I have a really bad over bite. I got's to get braces and stuff. I hope it dosen't hurt.
This is the real function of surgery,,
Yes it can
I am 24 and have been recommended surgery by numerous orthodontists. But I feel like im too old for this? Has anyone had this srugery donein their mid 20s?
I really think I would look ugly with an over bite, I don't know but I don't mind that my lower jaw comes out more because it fits me.
2 years of prep before the op is that right?
So brace are useless?
Hard to give costs honey. Everyone is different
its not very expensive compared to a TV
I have overbite will braces move entire jaw forward or just chin part?
yep
Bracese moved my jaw slightly to the right how to fix ?
i wore braces for around 1.7 months
i'm getting this surgery in a few months, so freaking nervousssss
What happened do you love it please say yes
Does it matter if you have no over bite anyway?
Dr. Coceancig
What is the difference between BSSO and IMDO??
The BSSO is fundamentally different to the IMDO. If you'd like to find out more, see the website profilosurgical.com.au
I have to get this surgery
Haii..i wanna make jaw surgery,.. :( how many cost n where can i make this surgery... Im from malaysia
well if I was concerned about my son's teeth, that would be the last where I would save!!! health now and how your teeth are in the future is sooo much more important and would probably be much cheaper-compared to later with problems! You must have some insurance,or insured from your parents or work etc,..If not complain EVERY day to your mom until it nerves her. For Gods sake its a excellent investment for the children she loves!!!
I have an underbite and I have braces on, had them when I was 16 and still do Just turn 17 can I still get surgery done if I have braces on
I wanna get surgery to make my chin look bigger and upper look smaller
great video and cinematography ....why American providers can't do the same is embarrassing.
