Couldn’t have said it better, Luke! I drooled over that watch in the Omega catalog with Pierce’s ambassador/Bond marketing pics for 30 years before I was able to get one. It’s insane the price difference then vs. now…the price sheet from our local Reed’s listed the 2531.80 at $1600 new in 95-96. I’ll never part with it and even if I buy another luxury watch, this will always be the daily wear. Even if Bond wasn’t associated with it, I’d have gravitated to it because of the blue, the stainless and the waves. The bracelet is also unique…a total package. If I ever decided to get a Rolex it would be the LALD Sub. I’ve heard similar tales about Rolex customer service. If I go into your shop…to buy a luxury watch, a firearm…or a roll of toilet paper, I should be treated with respect. Money spends the same no matter who walks in with it or what they’re buying. I chose your store and your product…work to earn and keep that trust and a loyal customer. My local Omega boutique has done that in spades.
@@BondsApartment Octopussy was my first Bond. I was obsessed with that Seiko G757. Oh and that Seiko tv watch! I would love to see Seiko make return to the Bond franchise. Maybe let the bad guy wear a Seiko or something.
Here's my take as an ancient guy who started reading the books before the Dr No came out in the theaters: James Bond wore a Rolex Explorer, no question. I was a little shocked in the films when he was wearing Submariners but I came around however that little Explorer stayed stuck in my mind. Many years later, after many Bond movies and many Bonds, many watches, I finally got to the point in life where I could afford luxury watches. What did I choose? A pre-owned Rolex Explorer circa 2001. This was at about the point where new Rolexes became unattainable and also where Daniel Craig proved himself a worthy Bond. I didn't like what Rolex the company had become. I started looking at Omegas. Fortunately as a US Military veteran I could shop at the online Military Exchange. They wore having periodic sales on Omegas with huge discounts. I purchased both a Seamaster professional 300 and a Planet Ocean. I love all three of my "Bond" watches. They connect my whole Bond experience from the early books to the latest films.
David, Superb research and presentation sir! As an author you are correct that we tend to insert some of our own traits and possessions in our novels. I have a Rolex Explorer , Submariner and Omega Seamaster 300M. Certainly enjoy them all. I am 70 years old, retired from the Air Force and then a second retirement from Homeland Security. While deployed to a combat zone, my Ian Fleming Bond books shipped out with me. Thank you again for sharing your love of Bond.
I’m a massive Bond fan, always have been since I was a kid in the 90s. I watched every film on repeat. I was obsessed with all things Brosnan Bond due to the video games. Loved the Omega but as I got older I fell in love with the style of Connerys bond, the Anthony Sinclair suits and sky blue shirts with the turn back cuffs and of course the Rolex sub on the nato. I liked how he could dress the watch up on a leather strap in Dr No and FRWL then sticks it on a nato for his missions in GF and Thunderball. He used it as a tool instead of it being a status symbol that Rolex is today. Recently had the debate of getting my first luxury watch and I was so close to pulling the trigger on the Brosnan Omega SM as I would never be able to get a Sub 6538 but felt more attached to that style of watch and connection to those earlier movies so I went for a Tudor black bay 54. Every time I look at it I’m reminded of Connerys Bond and makes me happy! That invisible Bond moment you talk about. Great discussion just my 2 cents, cheers
1) agree 100% about omega boutiques. INCREDIBLE customer service. went in and told them i just love watches but can’t afford one yet, and sales guy talked watches with me for 2 hours and let me try on a few. was completely blown away. 2.) Given Omegas history with the british military, it is highly likely that bond would’ve worn an omega during his time in the navy during the war which he often references in the books. So although fleming and book bond wore rolex, which at the time was probably more of a luxury brand, omega makes more sense given its history with british military.
Hey David, I believe you’re overlooking that the first gadget watch worn by James Bond was a Breitling Top Time in the 1965 film Thunderball, which featured a built-in Geiger counter to detect radiation. This unique timepiece was specially modified by the film’s art department and was the only one produced for the movie. Interestingly, after filming, the watch disappeared and resurfaced decades later at a car boot sale in England, where it was purchased for £25. It was later auctioned by Christie’s in 2013, fetching over £100,000.
Enjoyable way to start my Saturday. Right on time if I may quip too. Being about the “experience” I knew you would pick Omega because of what I heard about customer experience on the two brands outside of your channel. My one time venturing into an Omega store was a nice experience for myself too. I enjoyed all of this video. As most Bond fans we all noticed the Live and Let Die Rolex. It’s one of our favs. My personal fave watch is the No Time To Die Omega. Totally enjoyed this video. I didn’t know your fav actor who played Bond until this video…. Great reveal! And fun reveal in your fav watch too. Always love being a part of “The Bond Experience” with you. This was an awesome video! Thanks!
If you really want a Rolex to connect to Bond then buying a new one makes no sense. Go vintage and you can avoid all the pretentiousness and condescension of the official Rolex boutique. I even went into the Omega store at the King of Prussia Mall, with no ambitions of buying a watch and was honest to sales clerk and I still couldn't have been treated better. The salesman showed me several watches and even brought out the Seamaster Planet Ocean 6000M Ultra Deep, because I told him I was a scuba diver. We had a great conversation and left feeling like I almost made a friend. So you're not kidding about the amazing customer experience when it comes to Omega.
I think the Omega vs Rolex debate for James Bond comes down to when you were introduced to the character and what resonates with you personally. For me, I first saw GoldenEye around 2001 when I was 8 years old. Pierce Brosnan was my first Bond, and the blue Omega Seamaster was the Bond watch in my eyes. Later, seeing Daniel Craig wear the updated Seamaster Co-Axial in Casino Royale only solidified that connection. Now, I completely understand why people are drawn to Rolex. Ian Fleming wrote Bond wearing a Rolex, and in the 50s and 60s, Rolex was a natural choice for Bond a rugged, reliable tool watch that fit the character perfectly. The Submariner in Dr. No is iconic and represents the early essence of Bond. That said, I think Omega’s partnership, starting in the 90s with GoldenEye, made perfect sense for the time. Yes, Omega is a paid sponsor of the Bond franchise, but that’s not unique, so are Tom Ford, Crockett & Jones, and many other brands associated with Bond’s wardrobe. The fact that Omega stepped into this role and managed to integrate its watches into the character’s persona without feeling forced speaks volumes about the brand. Bond is a character that has to evolve with the times while still staying true to his roots. Omega strikes a perfect balance between innovation and heritage. The Seamaster, especially the 90s version with its blue wave-patterned dial, felt like a nod to Bond’s Royal Navy background while bringing something fresh to his style. It’s a small detail, but the waves on the dial felt symbolic of Bond’s connection to the sea, his naval history, and his overall adventurous persona. Combined with Omega’s more modern bracelet design and contemporary styling, the Seamaster brought Bond into the 90s and beyond without losing that classic, refined feel. It was a natural evolution that respected the “recipe” of Bond’s character: stylish, functional, and sophisticated, but never over the top or impractical. Rolex has heritage, no doubt about it, but Omega does too. The brand’s long-standing connection with exploration and precision (think of the Moonwatch, for example) aligns perfectly with Bond’s adventurous and resourceful nature. And while Rolex is iconic, Omega offers a level of accessibility and attainability that feels more in line with what Bond would realistically wear. For me, Omega isn’t just a sponsor it’s a watch brand that fits Bond’s character in the modern era. While Rolex is part of the franchise’s history, Omega represents the Bond that I grew up with and the era that resonates with me most. It keeps Bond stylish and contemporary while still honoring the character’s timeless essence. At the end of the day, I think it depends on which Bond you grew up with and how you connect to the character. For the classic fans, Rolex will always be king. But for me and many others: ”Rolex?” ”-Omega.”
@ Thanks buddy! I’ve been following you on here and on instagram for a good while. It seems we share a lot of common tastes. It’s awesome to be a part of the Bond community it always brings me joy and excitement to connect with others who share the same passion. Keep up the great work!
I’ve got a couple thoughts on it. 1. I think people generally identify with the Bond watch they first saw. The first Bond I saw in the theater was Brosnin, so Omega 300m is my go to. 2. With Rolex’s current image, a real spy wouldn’t wear them. They’d probably wear a g shock or something. 3. The British navy, which Bond is a commander of, issued Omega seamasters to its officers in the 1960s.
Secret service agents wear Omega. Noted on the wrist of one who protected trump during the assassination attempt. So they most definitely do wear more than just a Gshock
British officers secured obtaining a Rolex, post WWII, if they could afford to do so. They were considerably superior as rugged time pieces for field work. This was long before a Rplex became a status symbol. Fleming most likely came from that lineage during the war. The Explorer became legend when Hillary and Norgay summited Everest with a prototype in 1953. Of course the Explorer found a place on both Flemings and Bond's wrist. In an interview some years ago, Fleming's daughter confirmed the Rolex Explorer as Bond's likely watch of choice. Rolex does not do product placement in films or otherwise. Omega does. I can say this comfortably, since I own both an Explorer and a Seamaster. No offense to anyone, but the Rolex wins as the Bond watch.
Old School: No Date Submariner and Blue Dial Seamaster....I drool over some of the modern Omega Watches...and Own the huge Planet Ocean with the Black Rubber strap from Casino Royale..that I got almost 20 years ago the year I got married.
Another thing to note is that Omega becoming a sponsor of the Bond franchise saved Omega and perhaps Swatch as a whole from demise. This saved a huge segment of the watch industry. ETA (Swatch owned), supplies movements to so many brands.
Exactly, Flemming wore a Rolex Explorer 1, therefore it's the penultimate Bond watch. The, "platonic ideal of a sports watch" Explorer 1 also happens to be the perfect "GADA" watch for a character who goes from adventure to a tuxedo in Monte Carlo. Which is not at all critical of the Omega watches which have been featured as Bond watches, as those are certainly all beautiful and great watches in their own right as well.
I’ll own an Omega Seamaster one day, however, if I were a world traveler I’d use a Rolex Submariner. It is globally recognized as a high value piece thus allowing me to use it to bargain if in a pinch.
I started with the Brosnan Seamaster 300m, through the years I added a couple of Planet Oceans (Casino Royale and Skyfall models). I now have a one watch collection consisting of the current model No Date Sub. All of these watches allow me to add a Bondian flair to my daily grind. With that said, I couldn’t be happier with my current state as the Sub allows me to channel Dalton (fave), Connery and Moore with only a single piece. Helps me to connect with the Fleming Books better too as I read them. PS: still hoping to add a pristine condition 2220 SMP300m (Casino Royale) to my collection in the future.
In the Bond concept script (totally not a fanfiction) I’m writing, he starts off with a TAG Heuer Aquaracer as a personal watch and gets issued a Breitling Superocean by Q Branch so I’m being a bit controversial- meanwhile the villain wears the Rolex Submariner haha
I think today Bond would wear a Tudor Black Bay 58. The Rolex Sub has become too blingy. No way a spy would wear a shiny ceramic bezel. The Goldfinger Rolex Sub looks like a TBB 58 down to the red triangle on the bezel. Great episode, BTW.
Omega for me. Grew up with Brosnan and love Craig. As a college kid I bought and sold the 2531 (loved it but needed money). Goldeneye is my favorite Brosnan movie, and it wasn’t until recently that I learned he didn’t even wear the 2531 in that movie (2531 is in his other bond movies). Having said that, I just acquired the Goldeneye 2541. Despite it being a quartz watch, I’m absolutely in love. I love it even more than my old 2531. I believe this is because of my connection with Goldeneye as David describes.
Thanks for this video, always enjoy the Bond style and the watch is that perfect cherry on top! Being an extension of your arm is absolutely right, not having a luxury watch budget I chose a Seiko 5 SRPE55 “Dress KX”, and after a year it just feels like it’s supposed to be there. I also thought it’d be the one Seiko 5 Ian Fleming would’ve given a thumbs up to. 😂
British author, gentleman & officer Ian Fleming (1908-1964) wore a 1961 Rolex Explorer 1016 wrist watch and wrote about James Bond wearing a Rolex used as knuckle duster. Ian Fleming's personal Rolex Explorer 1016 has been found in 1981 so nowadays we know all the details of his personal Rolex watch on 7206 steel bracelet. During the “Fleming 100th anniversary” exhibition, Ian Fleming's Rolex Explorer 1016 was on display at the Imperial War Museum from May 2008 to March 2009. #Bond #Explorer #Moonwatchuniverse #Rolex
James Bond was a literary character before the 1990s. He was created by Ian Fleming. He wore a Rolex. He didnt drive a BMW convertible hairdresser's car either.
Great comparison. I like them both, however due to cost it would take a bit of soul searching to make the decision. I do love the look of the omega on the poster right behind you.
Brosnan Goldeneye was also what pushed me into my first good watch, a blue Omega Seamaster. Loved Craig Didn't really connect with the Planet Ocean models since they're too chunky for my wrist but really like the Skyfall Aqua Terra, Master Co-Axial from Spectre and the 300M NTTD, even the new 60th anniversary model. I would like to own a Rolex 14060 one day to round out the collection. The modern Bond movies with Brosnan and Craig resonate with me more even though I grew up with Roger Moore. I only got into the Connery movies as an adult.
I love Rolex but I only ever desired one of them, the Rolex Explorer 36mm, I honestly believe its a one watch collection, just by changing the straps its at home and designed for the rough and tumble of sailing, climbing mountains, outdoor pursuits as a field watch then paired with a black leather strap or bracelet with a Tux for a black tie event and equally look the part. But there are like 10 different Omega's I want, some I have desired long before becoming a Bond fan, like the Speedmaster(s) worn by Armstrong & Buzz, I still rate that as the greatest watch ever made and the Omega RAF Double Crown Spitfire watch from the 1940s, probably the first ever watch I looked at and said Wow, thats a really nice watch (Which they should reissue, up the size from 33 to 40mm and call the Airmaster)
David, you’ve given this SO much more thought than I ever have, and I love that! I would always choose Omega over Rolex… I love the connection of both brands to Bond, but for me it’s the aesthetic of Omega that wins it. I just think they’re SO much nicer than Rolex. But you have the only Rolex that catches my eye! That no date submariner is 😍 but I think I’d still pick a seamaster every single day! Loved this video. So much fun.
Great take on the subject! Most guys will comment here and say that Rolex is the only right answer since Flemming chose that brand. However, Bond anno 2025 might very well have gone in a different direction since Flemming wouldn’t have been able to walk in to a dealership and simple purchase a Rolex. Bond doesn’t strike me as a man who like to be kept on waiting lists etc so modern bond would definitely be an Omega-guy.
You hit it on the head David! Bond chose Rolex and that’s how it all started … BUT it honestly seems as Rolex somewhere along the line became too cool for Bond and Bond fans. They don’t see the benefit of embracing the Bond Lifestyle! Their customer non-service is solid proof of it! Omega was wise and grabbed the market and RAN with it! Brilliant! Did Rolex ever make ANYTHING with any Bond references? Honestly I haven’t been into fine timepieces long enough to know so I’m honestly just asking, but we see how Omega has taken to heart and recognizes Bond fans and how immense the fan base is! So why would we want to fork over our money to a company who honestly could care less! When I do get ready and go for a Rolex be sure it’ll be a vintage one that harkens back to Roger Moore and Connery! But for now I love the pieces Omega has been putting out! Especially the back of the 60th with the gun barrel scene! GENIUS! Just my two cents worth… great video David!!! Always enjoy your takes!
Dear David As a watch expert and a Bond fan, I will write some facts: A) The Rolex Submariner was the first diver's watch that reached and exceeded 100 meters in 1953. The Omega Seamaster diver was made 4 years later (1957). B) The Rolex Submariner was the official watch for SAS, SBS, Seals, frogmen, and Navy Officers from 1957 till 1967 and again from 1971 till 1977. The Omega Seamaster also became the official watch of the above but just from 1968 to 1971. Then, it was rejected again in favor of the Rolex Submariner. C) Fleming didn't write that Bond is wearing the Rolex Explorer. He wrote only that it was a Rolex. People are assuming he meant the Explorer just because he wore one. D) Bond is a Navy Officer and ex SBS or SAS member. So, in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, the only watch he could officially have from the Navy and MI6 was the Rolex Submariner. As you see, the choice of the Rolex Submariner for 007 was not just because of the Ian Fleming novels. It was because a Navy Commander and ex SAS or SBS member would only wear the Submariner. So the Rolex is the only accurate watch for Bond to wear not only because Fleming wrote it but also in terms of historical military accuracy. In 1995, Omega just paid to be 007 s watch. Just like BMW paid, then to replace Aston Martin. Seeing Bond wear an Omega instead of the Rolex is like seeing him driving a BMW instead of an Aston Martin
Just some fact checks. Omega Marine was tested to 135M in the 1930's SAS is army, SBS is navy. SAS had Rolex, SBS had Omega. Your right that BOND was navy
@@ALL-il1swNo my friend. All SBS and Naval Officers were officially provided with Rolex Submariners. Ŵhat you say is totally inaccurate. Also, Omega Marine my friend was not a divers watch by the way that a diver watch is emitted. It was just a patent of a simple watch inside another silled case. This cannot by any means can be considered a divers watch. The diver watch must have the next elements. 1. A case that can be sealed as a submarine. 2. A crown guard that can lock without water. 3. A bezel counter that counts the minutes of you oxygen underwater. 4. A dial with luminous markers for clear reading underwater. The first real diver watches were made in 1953. They were the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms and the Rolex Submariner. The Omega Seamaster followed them some 4 years later. End of story. My best regards
@@ΕΜΜΑΝΟΥΗΛΧΑΤΖΗΔΑΚΗΣ-ρ5σ why is Omega Marine not a divers watch. It was literally designed for divers. How can you expect Omega to meet a standard for divers watches created more than a decade afterwards. It would be like saying from today on, all divers watches must have a HEV, and then declaring that the submariner was never a divers watch. The Omega Marine may very well be the first ever divers watch. Because it was a divers watch in the 1930s when it was released
@ALL-il1sw First of all, I am speaking as a watch historian and expert with 35 years of experience. I am not a fan boy of anything. You seem to be by the way you are altering the watch history to the measure of your favorite brand. I have had more than 15 vintage Omegas and Rolexes in my life. I am not a fan boy of any of the brands, I just know watch history. As for the Omega Marine, no, it is not considered a divers watch by any watch historian. It was a simple watch, not even a waterproof one. And it was just sealed in a separate waterproof case. To call this a... diver's watch is comical, at the least. But even so, from 1926, Rolex invented the Oyster, which was the first real waterproof watch, and in 1929, it made the Rolex Submarine (not Submariner) which had elements of a real diver, without using... a case inside a case. All my best
@@ΕΜΜΑΝΟΥΗΛΧΑΤΖΗΔΑΚΗΣ-ρ5σ you still missed the point. You're using a standard from the 1950s to dismiss a watch from the 1930s. That is what is comical. You'll find in any industry the 1st generation are always improved upon, but something had to come 1st Also, "invented waterproof watch". Do some more research. The British submariners in WW1 had a waterproof wrist watch. It was called "Submarine". And no it was definitely NOT made by Rolex
There was a right choice here, David - and you made it! 🎉 The No Time To Die Seamaster and the 60th Anniversary blue dial as a pair are the most stunning, comfortable and versatile watches I’ve ever seen, worn, owned. (Lucky enough to have another black dial Diver 300 too.) Obviously I hope to be able to enjoy more watches in the future but for now and a long while, I can’t see myself ever needing/wanting anything else.
I like the Tudors, the colours are very eye-catching and in a way they're more interesting than Rolex with its very restricted number of models and colours. I have a five digit Rolex sub with slightly dark blue bezel because of past exposure to sunlight and seawater and it looks great..I wish James Bond would return to Rolex, or vice versa... I can't get excited over Omegas.
@@jamesedgewood4643the only worthy Omega is the Moonwatch. I think Omegas more available because they aren’t as wanted. Likely due to having too few iconic models and too many limited editions. I see more people in my area wearing Rolex than Omega. Our dealer here is fantastic, I just I lack enough desire for one… But I’d rather buy a Jaeger LeCoutre lol. Tudor Black Bay is a handsome watch to be proud of owning - kudos on good taste.
A dateless design is very cool, and the Omega 60th anniversary would be my first choice. It brings the Brosnan era right up to date (no pun intended) with the current Craig era. Literary Bond would probably choose the Rolex…
I was first introduced to Bond watching Sean Connery's movies on TV as a kid, so I am in the Rolex camp. However, as opposed to an Explorer, a Submariner makes more sense for Bond since he served in the navy and would have to conduct deep sea diving during his missions. Therefore, the Submariner is more in line with being able to endure the elements Bond would encounter.
@@ALL-il1swBritish naval officers my friend were wearing Rolex Submariners first the ref. 6538 and 5512 (1957-1967) and after the ref. 5513 (1971-1978). The Seamaster was also in service for just 4 years (1967-1971) but was dropped in favor again for the Submariner. Search better the story of military watches to prevent such historical inaccuracies
Well Sean Connery's Submariner reference 6538, in Dr.No ,its the most iconic watch in bond movies. It's speculated that the watch was actually the personal timepiece of producer Albert Broccoli, who lent it to Connery when they filmed Dr. No. Nothing beats the Rolex submariner slim case. Rolex submariner with maxi case, it's too big. Make it small and classy.
In the espionage trade, a watch does one thing - it keeps time. And being on time can be a life and death issue. Fleming understood this and decided Rolex was the right answer for his character. Truthfully, in the 1950s Rolex and Omega both created “working man’s watches” that you could buy for less than a month’s pay. Specialized units of the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Commandos were issued Rolex Submariners. Royal Air Force pilots were often issued Omegas (among other quality Swiss watches). That has changed today. CWC and other British manufacturers like Elliot Brown are the issued watches for special operations and G-shocks are ubiquitous “down range.” Rolex and Omega divers keep terrific time, but they are now luxury timepieces. Luxury is part of both the literary Bond and the cinema Bond so either would fit into the story. The short answer (too late, JR) is that it doesn’t matter. Both are superior timepieces and I can imagine Bond saving up £ after some dangerous TDY and buying either of these luxury watches. Sorry, no controversy on my part. BTW, I don’t own either brand. Cheers, JR Seeger Old warrior, even older novelist
Hi David. Good video. I appreciate your channel and the content but I am also a little sad that you don't cover the music. Within the last 4 months or so, La-La land Records has released four Bond scores. Goldfinger wasnt at all expanded because the mastertapes are gone, but The man with the golden gun and Moonraker and now Licence to kill have now been made into double disc versions with the entire score vailable and the sound quality is amazing. Why have you not talked about this? In the time where we don't get a new Bondmovie, Why not talk about what we are actually getting? Btw what about an interview with conposer Eric Serra? If you are ever gonna debate that score in one of your videoes, I would be very glad to join your show. Kind regards from Denmark.
I agree the recent La La Land releases have been unbelievable. I’m probably get more excited for these releases than I would news about a movie. Hopefully, they’ll be releasing many more in the years to come.
Fleming gave birth to Bond wearing an Explorer. Omega was the highest bidder when Golden Eye needed money. Bond wearing Omega makes about as much sense as Bond driving a BMW. That said, love the channel. Good luck P
The Rolex Submariner 6538, Submariner 5513, Omega Seamaster 300 165.024 (1968) and the Seamaster 300 Master Chronometer 234.32.41.21.01.001 are my favourite models from the two luxury Swiss watch brands.
Rolex 1016 explorer. It’s what he wrote staring down at his left wrist while writing casino royale for his first book so to me it’s what Ian Fleming wished for James Bond watch to be. And since the explorer 1 is still in production (albeit updated) at same size 36mm, it’s the James Bond watch that I would say surpasses them all. (I love Rolex sub and omega seamaster to round off the top 3 bond watches).
Omega isn’t out of place on Bond’s wrist, but from my perspective, Rolex makes the most sense. Rolex is a brand that historically straddles both elegance and adventure (more so than Omega). That said, I don’t think the right Rolex for Bond has ever been portrayed on film. There are two Rolex models that make the most sense, with a slight preference toward one specifically. Those two models are the Explorer and the Explorer-dial Submariner. Many make the case that Bond should wear an Explorer because Fleming did - I don’t see that as a strong argument. Bond should wear an Explorer because it’s the perfect model in the Rolex catalogue that balances between robustness/adventure and understated elegance (like Bond himself). The Explorer is a field watch and Bond is a field agent. I can also see people making a solid argument for the Explorer-dial Submariner over the Explorer itself - given that Bond is a naval officer. However, before Bond was a naval officer, he was an alpine climber - and the Explorer is the most appropriate watch for mountaineering. The Explorer has plenty of water resistance, has a classic and conservative look, can take a beating, doesn’t draw too much attention, and is made for field work but is also right at home on the wrist when wearing a suit - the Explorer screams Bond.
what is the actual reference # on your rolex sub? I know you said it was the modern version of the 5513 but I don't think you said which reference you have. Thanks.
@@darkstar7742 I've got a Seiko calendar watch that Roger Moore wore in Moonraker. Still works, but it doesn't have any explosives and detonators inside it. LOL When I was still at school in late 70s, I'd often go to the local jewellers and just gaze over the range of Seiko digitals, that i couldn't afford.
Well, Her Majesty’s Royal Navy Special Boat Service wore Rolex Submariner watches between 1955 and 1965 - the era of around the time James Bond (Sean Connery) wore a Submariner. So, it made sense for Bond to wear a Rolex. The SBS wore Omega Seamaster watches between 1966 and 1972 before returning to Rolex. Then in the 1980s, Special Boat Service began wearing CWC dive watches and that lasted to this very day. Omega Seamaster Professional GMT watches were supplied to the SBS for a very brief period from 2007. So, whether choosing Rolex or Omega is a personnel preference. So, you can’t go wrong whether you choose Rolex or Omega. However, for me, Rolex has a longer period of history with the SBS and is classic Bond.
I own 4 rolexes and have owned 2 more. I have not been able to get any of the Omegas I have wanted from the dealers and it is sad, because I've been wanting to connect with this brand for a long time now. I really thought the 60th anniversary one would be the one.
Rolex Submariner has that timeless look and one can wear it with formal business attire and it can some serious use and knocks. Omega Seamaster Professional has that “ready for action” connotation and goes with casual attire and resort wear - especially the blue dial model. You can’t go wrong with either. I believe it comes down to what suits your personality, lifestyle and wardrobe - what would you get more wrist time out of? Many military intelligence and secret service agencies still swear by Rolex.
Flemming choose a Bently as the characters car. That doesn't work so well now. Later on, this was switched to Aston Martin. This is the Bond car. Goes to show you can have evolution that improves the character. However, undecided I own both a neo vintage submariner as worn in the movies, and the NTTD. I can kill assassins wearing either. Most likely the Exploreror Omega Aqua Terra are better fits for the role. Working for UK, with our investment in military, most likely Bond would have been issued a Timex Snoopy watch. On the watch front, if you own either an Omega or Rolex, you own a beautiful watch.
I enjoyed this debate. And though the ultimate judge may very be "me"; there are factors that can not be in dispute. You mentioned what the literary Bond, wore. And that is fair and has "some" weight to decision. But there is another accessory that the literary Bond has that the theatrical Bond doesn't have. The Bond in the novels drives a Bentley Continental. In the movies, The classic Bond (Sean) drove an Aston Martin. And him driving it has cemented that iconic item. Pierce drove a BMW for a few movies. He did drive an Aston Martin, or returned to driving one an embraced his "style". Bond drives an Aston not a BMW. And no one cries about him not driving a Bently per novels. I watched a video some time back about "What does wearing a Rolex, Omega, Speedmaster say about you" from a watch expert. (I forget his name) but in a nutshell he mentioned if you wear a speedmaster, you are into history. If you wear an Omega, youre into Bond. If you wear a Rolex, its about symbol of achievement or status. He said if you wear a rolex, you are in sales. Or bought it causeyou got promoted, maybe as a midtier manager. His opinion about the 2 watches should really settle it. Lol. Bond would not be concerned with status. Vesper in Casino Royale, notices the watch and makes fhe comment about "SAS Type, with easy smiles and fancy watches." And before she makes the observation of Bond going to "Oxford or wherever" and dressing the type. If there is some truth in that, Bond would want to "style" himself differently. Cause he does not like those from Oxford or the SAS type. And the final video reference is that of Luke from @bondsapartment who made a video and summed up the debate with "if you see someone wearing a Rolex, you dont ask is that Bond's watch?" As no one asks or associate Bently Continental with Bond as they do with Aston Martin. Another thing people associate Bond with "styling" is a Tuxedo. Aston Martin, martini shaken not stirred, tuxedo with a Walther, and Omega (gadeget) watch. His image is one of "Man of Mystery". Aston martin has gadgets. His tux has hidden pockets. His watch is a gadet. It may be all gimmicks. But all something special. And Bond would think he is special. And the fact he has a license to kill, 007, would empower his thought of not being like everyone else.
Hey my man. When you upload these post these it would be nice if you bring more visuals to like as you talk about watches add in photos of the pieces you’re talking about.
Bond’s watch was always a sticking point with me. I don’t think he’d be running around with something so memorable on his wrist. Tag Huer and Swiss make more sense to me. The watch has to seal the look. I get that.
Omega paid to have blatant product placement, Rolex is in the books. No contest. I'll take a beaten up 5 digit Rolex 1016 or 14270 over any Omega anytime. I did have a 2254 Seamster that I dived with many times but it went and my old Rolex bangers keep on doing the job whether skiing, running, playing tennis or underwater work. For the record, Bond did not inspire my watch purchases in the early 90s and I have zero interest in Omega bond watches. They're not bad just not my cup of tea.
Omega didn't know their watch was in Golden eye until the movie came out, so seems like you just recite narrative. Sorry, but this is just another time Omega got chosen over Rolex when the marketing guys weren't involved
@@ALL-il1sw NO, that may not be correct. Its well documented that from 1995 the production team knew exactly what Bond was going to wear and they struck commercial agreements with every company whose product features in all movies from that time, not only the watches. It would be very interesting to learn more about Eon's commercial arrangements with partners it would be a huge money spinner for them. I agree with the post above about Rolex being Fleming's choice.
@@bassmannausaugsburg from 1995, so after Golden Eye came out? Keep in mind Lindy's version of events would have to have been pre-production and filming. It's apparent both versions can be accurate
The Rolex of the 50s and 60s is not the Rolex of today. A man of Bonds means may have a vintage Rolex, passed down from Dad, but even with supplementing his income with gambling would struggle to purchase a new one in the 21st century. Omega, in many but not all, ways fills the market gap that Rolex dominated in the 50s. If only choosing between the two, due to pubic service income and a distain for the snobbishness of the average Rolex dealership, the Bond of today would buy a Omega.
Your discussion is fair and sensible. Fleming chose Rolex. Connery wore Rolex. I tilt toward Rolex, but I also own a couple of Omegas, and they are excellent watches. (But the fact that there is now a Swatch-Omega dents the brand equity.)
Bonds watch is a money deal not a romance. Rolex doesn't care about Bond unless Roger Federer became Bond. Omega has used it's Bond connection well but are now overpriced. I'd like to see Bond move on from both. I'd love if Tudor or Chrostpher Ward swoop in and take on that Sponsorship with the Bond films. The next Bond should relate to the next generation with a 2 to 4k watch vs. an 8 to 12k watch.
Not to be salty, but from "Casino Royale" to present, Bond films have been little more than product placement. I get it that Bond films are influenced by the popular culture of the moment. A fine example is "Live and Let Die" or more appropriately "Moore does Blackploitation." However, Craig era Bond movies were made to compete with the Bourne franchise. I miss Cold War Bond movies.
On another note, the debate between Rolex and Omega reminds me of Ferrari versus Lamborghini, you have a brand with more culture but more snobbery from the sellers (Ferrari/Rolex) and one that is still a luxury product but can be enjoyed by anyone (Lamborghini/Omega).
Ironically both Ferrari and Rolex claimed "If you want to be someone buy a Ferrari/Rolex" Lamborghini responded with "If you already are somebody, buy a Lamborghini" 😂
Omega is just business. Rolex was chosen by Fleming for a reason which had nothing to do with marketing. Rolex was/is therefore a natural part of Bond's style and personality according to the author. His opinion on that matter is the measure because it laid out the foundation of everything afterwards and without this measure the Bond universe and everything linked with it wouldn't even exist. Omega is Bond's choice according to ads. This isn't even a debate. If you are a true & traditional Bond lover, you'll respect the ideas of the man whose creativity is the reason why we're even following the whole Bond franchise and its extensions such as this channel.
Why would it be a mistake? Who determines whether it was a mistake at all? You? The same person that wants to correct the author Ian Fleming? I like Omega but it just doesn't fit Bond and to make things worse Fleming agreed with me.
As a Bond fan and a watch collector - I have zero interest in Rolex. If you have the money, and the watch is available - you should be able to buy it brand new from the AD or boutique. If its not immediately available, you should able to pay a deposit and acquire the watch when it's in. I have purchased pieces from brands such as JLC directly from the boutiques with no buy history and received wonderful customer service as well as continued invitations to events. Rolex presents a very disrespectful and gross client experience, and I'll never advertise them on my wrist for that reason. Which is a shame, because the watches are fantastic - but the manufactured scarcity and lack of respect ruins the appeal completely. Also Quantum is the best Bond movie ever made. Come at me!!!! 🤣
Bond was a British naval commander, if he were real he would have likely been part of British special forces, and being Navy that branch would have been the SBS. The SBS had affiliation with Omega, specifically the SMP300. So if James Bond was real, he'd literally own an Omega SMP300
You probably don't know the story well. Rolex Submariner 6538 and 5513 was the official watch for the the SAS/SBS and Navy Officers from 1957 till 1967 and again from 1971 till 1978. The Seamaster became also the official but just for 4 years (1968-1971) and then again was Rolex. So as you see exactly because he is a Navy Officer and ex SBS/ SAS must wear a Rolex Submariner
@@ALL-il1sw I know very well what SAS and SBS is my friend. And I will repeat myself. All members of the SAS and of the SBS and all Navy Officers from 1957 till 1967 and again from 1971 till 1978 were issued with Rolex Submariners (ref. 6538, 5512, 5513 and 5517)! Period. The Ministry of Defense tried the Omega Seamaster between 1968 and 1971 but found it less capable in shallow water because of the naiad system. So they returned to Rolex. Don't write inaccuracies. Search more the history of military watches. All my best
The time you got on board to the Bond train does not define what Bond wore. Omega was a failing brand that had to buy exposure. Read about Biever and how he negotiated the contract for Omega. But Fleming was very specific on defining Bond’s taste on car, watches and drinks. Coca Cola can pay for a 007 drinking it, would you start drinking Coke then?
@@relojeroschat think about it, I'm challenging your premise, and provided a source. Don't believe everything Rolex fanboys spin, there's usually not much depth to it.
There’s no debate. Omega is a sell out brand that exploits Bond to sell watches. And Bond used Rolex to strengthen its franchise as a luxury brand. Omega is for high schoolers.
I think they are both relevant for their time. Rolex was Fleming/Connery and reflective of the original Bond. Omega is no Rolex but talks to modern day advertising consumerism and marketing. So I think both work for their time. Omega pay what Rolex never will so as it will never have the brand prestige or desirability. Similar to Samsung against Apple.
Nothing to do with Bond, but growing up in the 70s and 80s, Rolex got a reputation for being the go to watch for the nouveau riche, gaudy and loud wide boys who were showing off their wealth with brand names, when that didn't really exist, like it does today. That soured me on Rolex, I am neutral on the Omega, so I'd probably go for the Omega. It is the same with Tag Heuer, it was a great brand, but got tarnished due to the advertising and being worn by the "wrong" people, it went from being the time piece for the motor sport enthusiast to being a gaudy "look at me, I'm rich" accessory. Breitling has a much more sober, refined reputation... Watches are difficult.
I am an omega owner love it but I do want to get a Rolex (5513) as well because it was the one my favorite lazenby wore and I have the 2531.80 cause I grew up in the brosnan era so I’m not partial like both and say both are fantastic bond brands
“He could not just wear a watch. It had to be a Rolex.” - Ian Fleming - referring to James Bond.
Thank you. Most 007 fans are forgetting Fleming's reference
Goldeneye was my first Bond film. Goldeneye got me into watches. Brosnan is my Bond. Brosnan wore an Omega - therefore, so do I.
My man!
Thanks for your service!
You sir, are the real life Bond, with the arsenal of watches to boot ⌚️
Thanks for sharing your story and your love of Bond!
Ian Fleming wore a Rolex Explorer..... And wrote he wore a Rolex..... That's it
HELL NAHHH BOND IS ALL ABOUT OMEGAA
But for me and many others: ”Rolex?”
”-Omega.”
This is very well said
@ Thanks buddy!
Flemming chose Rolex. Omega paid for it. This settles it
Daniel Craig would be another John Wick if it wouldn’t be for Sean Connery. The legend started long ago, as defined by Flemming.
What an original take
Exactly, Flemming wore a Rolex Explorer 1, therefore it's the penultimate Bond watch.
But also only don’t call it Explore 1. Just Rolex Explorer it’s fine 😊
Villains usually wear the Patek ! Except for grant, who wore a day date moon phase gold GP
Omega is what I think of when I think of a James Bond timepiece.
As an englishman I love your channel, the passion in your collection is awesome my friend! much love from england!!
He didn't live in the 21st century either. Yet here we are.
Rolex Explorer is the true Bond watch for me. Timeless, elegant, rugged and can be worn in all circumstances. It says adventure for me.
“Rolex?”
“Omega.”
Beautiful..
Dear David
As a watch expert and a Bond fan, I will write some facts:
A) The Rolex Submariner was the first diver's watch that reached and exceeded 100 meters in 1953.
Omega Marine was tested to 135M in the 1930's
SAS is army, SBS is navy.
You'll find in any industry the 1st generation are always improved upon, but something had to come 1st
Also, "invented waterproof watch". Do some more research. The British submariners in WW1 had a waterproof wrist watch. It was called "Submarine". And no it was definitely NOT made by Rolex
There was a right choice here, David - and you made it! 🎉
The No Time To Die Seamaster and the 60th Anniversary blue dial as a pair are the most stunning, comfortable and versatile watches I’ve ever seen, worn, owned. (Lucky enough to have another black dial Diver 300 too.) Obviously I hope to be able to enjoy more watches in the future but for now and a long while, I can’t see myself ever needing/wanting anything else.
You have excellent taste!
Hello,
I wear a Tudor Black Bay. It's very close to the Submariner 6538, is from Rolex and is affordable...my Bond watch :)
Rolex......... Next question
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that the first watch that was an gadget was the Breitling Top Time as a Geiger Counter in fireball? Or?
true in Thunderball
A dateless design is very cool, and the Omega 60th anniversary would be my first choice. It brings the Brosnan era right up to date (no pun intended) with the current Craig era.
Literary Bond would probably choose the Rolex…
Agree have my 60th since last April. Love it.
But British Naval officers were issued Seamasters
@@ALL-il1swBritish naval officers my friend were wearing Rolex Submariners first the ref. 6538 and 5512 (1957-1967) and after the ref. 5513 (1971-1978). The Seamaster was also in service for just 4 years (1967-1971) but was dropped in favor again for the Submariner. Search better the story of military watches to prevent such historical inaccuracies
Watching this, wearing my Seamaster 2541.80, thinking about buying a Rolex as my next watch. Love the content!
Many of us have the same experiences with Rolex. I was on waitlists for years for a Rolex, and bought my second Omega.
I think the Breitling that Connery wore in Thunderball was the first one that was a gadget. It worked as a Geiger counter to detect radiation
where is your polo from?
I have an Omega Planet Ocean and I love it; it's an incredibly well-built watch that I wear every day. Also, I like the fact that it is NOT a Rolex
My PO is the star of my one watch collection.
I’m 55, love Connery but in 1995 Goldeneye made me want Bond’s watch, ever since I wear my Seamaster 300M quartz everyday. Love it to bits.
CWC and other British manufacturers like Elliot Brown are the issued watches for special operations and G-shocks are ubiquitous “down range.”
Rolex and Omega divers keep terrific time, but they are now luxury timepieces.
Cheers,
JR Seeger

Hi David.
Good luck

Omega really embraces its Bond connection ❤
what is the actual reference # on your rolex sub? I know you said it was the modern version of the 5513 but I don't think you said which reference you have. Thanks.
I'm Team Omega.
Rolex stood for something different in the 50s/60s than what it stands for today.
Rolex vs Omega vs Seiko vs Pulsar, especially with Roger Moore.
Got the Hamilton Pulsar re-issue in gold. Surprisingly I get the most noticed for this watch then other watches 10x the price. 😂
@@darkstar7742 I've got a Seiko calendar watch that Roger Moore wore in Moonraker. Still works, but it doesn't have any explosives and detonators inside it. LOL
When I was still at school in late 70s, I'd often go to the local jewellers and just gaze over the range of Seiko digitals, that i couldn't afford.
Breitling vs Tissot
The Live and Let Die Rolex is the quintessential Bond watch. However my personal favourite is the Brosnan Omega.
Great video David I cannot decide as I love the Rolex and Omega watches as they look so classy and cool to wear
Get both.
Urban gentry would have been a great guest for this one 👍
Add in Teddy Baldassare
Na Archieluxury 🤣
Hey my man. When you upload these post these it would be nice if you bring more visuals to like as you talk about watches add in photos of the pieces you’re talking about.
Good suggestion, I'll keep that in mind for future videos.
Bond’s watch was always a sticking point with me. I don’t think he’d be running around with something so memorable on his wrist. Tag Huer and Swiss make more sense to me.
The watch has to seal the look. I get that.
Umm, Bond never wore a Casio.
"Bah Rolex." *Drops it in the bin* 🤣
I’m older so Connery was MY Bond but those blue Omegas are da bomb.
In 2024, Rolex was the largest selling watch brand - becoming the first Swiss watch brand to surpass CHF10 billion in sales.
Bond opted for Omega because the Rolex waitlist was too long 😂
There's a reason the Olympics, NASA and James Bond all chose Omega. Because to them accuracy matters.
You might want to check out the Robb Report. Seiko watches were a big player in Bond films.
Just another chance to have both😂
As long as Omega is willing to pay the producers and Rolex isn’t, Bond will wear an Omega.
But Omega is the older brand by far. The choice of Olympics. The choice of NASA.
@ I thought Bulova was NASA’s choice?
@@FelixValentiCh. Omega is still the only watch brand certified by NASA.
Ironically both Ferrari and Rolex claimed "If you want to be someone buy a Ferrari/Rolex"
Lamborghini responded with "If you already are somebody, buy a Lamborghini" 😂
Omega was chosen by Bond costume designer, I guess they were correcting Flemings mistake
Why would it be a mistake? Who determines whether it was a mistake at all? You? The same person that wants to correct the author Ian Fleming?
I like Omega but it just doesn't fit Bond and to make things worse Fleming agreed with me.
Trust me to be the odd one out: my favourite Bond watches are Roger's Seikos 😂
Both brands are excellent, but what the Rolex AD's put you through to buy a watch (steel sports) is too much.
FWIW, I have a Rolex. I won it more than 25 years ago as part of a motorsports writing contest.
@ΕΜΜΑΝΟΥΗΛΧΑΤΖΗΔΑΚΗΣ-ρ5σ you probably don't know you're either SAS or SBS not both. Omega are known for supplying the navy. SBS is navy
7 UP put a add during Moonraker

What watch brands were worn by Red and Francisco?
I'm shocked that someone who owns something like 10 Omegas and 1 Rolex would choose Omega. 🙂
There’s no debate. Omega is a sell out brand that exploits Bond to sell watches. And Bond used Rolex to strengthen its franchise as a luxury brand. Omega is for high schoolers.
Rolex paid to be part of Bond too.
@@JoeThomas-tk3jzincorrect.
Omegas been a Bond watch longer than Rolex has been responsible for their own watch production 🤣
I do like both❤
Rolex all the way. Omega was a nice sartorial deviation for the last 30 years but Rolex is the original and always will be.
I will alway prefer the clean, symmetrical look of a no-date.
That's the Sub 5513. And the new Omega Bond 60th - which is my favourite Seamaster 300.
Rolex was Bond’s watch brand in the books by Ian Fleming, Omega was just the films
Omega is amazing.
I am an omega owner love it but I do want to get a Rolex (5513) as well because it was the one my favorite lazenby wore and I have the 2531.80 cause I grew up in the brosnan era so I’m not partial like both and say both are fantastic bond brands
