The hole is round, it does not matter. Hals holed notes are weaker, you can compensate to a certain extend by blowing harder but this is the nature of the ney. It gives those half holed notes their special character.

Thank you for this lesson. I have a question, though: How do you close a hole half? Do you close the upper or lower half? Or the left or right half? Or entirely different all together? Also, when I try to do a half closed hole, the sound becomes a lot weaker and fuzzier. How can I make it as strong as the 'usual' tones? Thanks!
