Ah man... FINALLY! it took me about 3-4 years but now i can play both turkish and persian ney, remember seeing your video few years back and thought i would never would be able to play this flute.
Praise God! I finally got my first note on the ney after watching this video a second time. I wasn’t really hissing as you suggest. Thank you very much sir. I’m excited to learn some songs on this beautiful instrument
I really want to thank you for your class. It took me only a couple of hours to get the desired sound from my ney. I still have a long way to go, but I'm very happy already. Thank you again. You are such a giver.
Thanks so much for your time taken to make this video. I asked a friend to get this Nay from Iran for me and I brought it to the US, now learning it and you video has helped so much. God bless you!!!
This is an amazing, clearly explained and incredibly complete ney lesson. In fact, this is the first timeI think “this video deserves a good comment” and I actually give me the time to write it. I’m starting with the armenian duduk and my boyfriend was telling me about sounds and wind instruments nozzles when he found your video and we watched it. I do not have or intended to learn how to play a ney, but after your marvellous lesson I will probably try to. I think you have a kind and wonderful soul. Thank you
A friend of mine who has friends in Iran shared this video with me. I am a bassoonist and have a love for Bulgarian and Hungarian sounds as well as related musics from the middle east. As a bassoonist I work with Arundo Donax all the time, and this video has inspired me to learn to use the material in a totally new way! I will be checking out your other videos and your website and you might get an order for a ney from me soon! Very intriguing instrument.
So useful. Thanks a lot. It's almost one year I'm trying to make noise by my NIE . I dare to say you are one the best trainers who demonstrated the best way to use front teeth .Anyway appreciate you a lot.
Great video! After months of trying (the wrong way, apparently) I finally managed to produce a tone, because of this video. It's weak and unstable, but it's there! I am ridiculously happy with this! ;) This is really good fun! In a year from now, I will finally know if I 'built' my ney accurately or not! Thanks a lot for posting, this really made my day!
Thanks a lot for these video I have a Ney and i didn't have an idea to how to start playing I´m a profesional bassoon & sax player but I really love the ney.I will practice all these exercise.
Was given a Bashkirian kurai made by Azat Aitkulov. Thanks to your Doel den Kees van instruction video I had sound from it within 5 minutes (after trying for some hours the weeks before). I am crap, but it is the kurai sound, which I already find quite something. At least I will not be totally embarassing when my family asks me to play something. Going to watch this video several times and try more. Thanks Kees!
Thank you so much for this video, I look forward to taking lessons from you in the future. Like you mentioned before, it's very difficult to show how to get the upper registers, but it's still a very big help.
Thank you very much. I got it after long time trying and looking again and again your video and listen to your sound and explanations. Best teaching in English for me. Sorry there are much more teachers in other languages, but I only understand English, French and German. But also thanks for every of those explanations I did't not understood, but your were willing to teach me and this is also a very nice and an important energy who helped me to try and try again until I got it.
I'm really excited...I followed your directions to make a ney out of conduit...I will purchase from you shortly lol! I followed your lesson here just now and made sound within half an hour! Of course its unreliable but getting there I can't wait to have a proper Ney, such a beautiful instrument!! Thankyou so very very much!!
Thank you so much .you are good and kind man.👍👍👍شما شخص بسیار خوب ومهربانی هستید و بخاطر انتخاب نی وموزیک اصیل ایرانی بسیار خوشحالم که باشما همراهم ممنون استاد گرامی.👍👍👍💖💖
Hello! Great lesson! Very helpful for me. Bashkort people has similar instrument. We call it kuray. I am learning how to play on kuray now. Kuray and ney has some differences but also has same principles to make a sound
This is outstanding that you can play Persian Ney really good and particularly traditional Persian melodies like Dastgahe Shur or Bayate Tork. The sound is clear and really nice. This video is truly amazing cause this is the first time I see a non-Iranian musician plays Ney in such a good way. You can also listen to "Hasan Kasaie, حسن کسایی" since he is the maestro of Ney in Iran.
Kash Nikravesh. well if you have it naturally you can consider it as a trait or capability and it helps you much but you do not need that necessarily and you can use other teeth or even by other positioning styles.
Kash Nikravesh. Thanks a lot. I am actually a traditional persion music singer and Kamanche player also, and I follow different music performances and playing styles particularly Tar, Santur, Ney, etc.
Kash Nikravesh. If you are living in Iran you can attend to Ostad Hamidreza Nourbakhsh singing classes in which you will have the opportunity to gain the knowledge of Tahrir an exercise related drills as well. For Tar you'd better start under supervision of a professional player. I am happy for you and your sister due to contributing in playing other instruments.
Great video. Looking forward to more. One suggestion would be to have a stand alone lesson featuring a really beautiful melody of your choice. but anything would be appreciated.
People have asked for these lessons for while but I thought it would not be useful until I saw your excellent sehtar lesson videos. I still can't get my left hand on the frets. Is it possible to play with both hands on the frets and use your toenail to pluck the strings?
I can't think of anyone who has contributed to the international recognition of Persian ney more than Kees van den Doel. Those who are interested to know more should visit his website persianney.com.
Thank you for this excellent video. I have a question: I am finding it difficult to get a focused tone. I have large front teeth which protrude below my upper lip, and I found that when I cut a small slip in the ney mouthpiece, it helps focus the sound. Is this permissable? Or will the slit in the mouthpiece create future problems in playing? I'm a beginner, and want to avoid bad habits. (The slit allows the mouthpiece to rest inside my upper lip more easily, and also the tongue has more access to the mouthpiece.) Thank you for any advice!
Thanks for your video! I've got a question: I saw many videos of persian ney players and they had a different position of their neys in their mouths. Some stick it right, some stick it left. Is there any difference between that?
great videos, i play nay over 30 yrs, last couple of yrs tried persian nay, can get all the octaves, but, that sweeeet sound you make in the upper ocatve i cannot get, Is it, like with other flutes, a good quality nay, or is it you?
Kees, you are the best teacher I may say sir I have a question please, I am led to believe that to be able to play persian ney one needs to learn to produce four variety of sounds before being able to play persian ney and please tell me what are these four sounds and how to practice to master these sounds
That's an overreaction.... You clearly don't know any Ney artists. Start with the legend Omer Faruk Tekbilek: ruclips.net/video/N3Bg654UKJs/видео.html Fun fact: This guy got hired to record most Ney instrumentals in the game Civilization V.
Thank you very much! I'm planning to build ney out of plastic and bamboo - this kind of cane doesn't grow here:( I'm playing gucul floyara (see my videos),bulgarian kaval - they are without whistle, just like ney, but played "with lips", as turkish ney. But from time to time I am trying to get sound as of persian ney and sometimes succeed:) Tell me please, what are good dimension of ney to start practice (length or key and inner diameter?) Cheers from Ukraine:) Thanks:)
hi i want to start to learn nay. i saw ney with 6 and with 5 holes? what should i take? and i saw a kind with a rubber in the top. what to choose? thx..
i just found you & it is so amazing & you explain so simple....i sing radif & i know....i can send you videos of radifnavazi or"playing radif"....curse if you want
Thanks for this Video , Ney is the most difficult instrument to play , I managed to make noise out of the Ney pretty fast , but to make it clear , took me long time ( I know for many it might takes 6 month to make the first noise ) , I can see you made lots of Ney in back ground how do you make the holes ( distance ... etc ) I am persian and live in Sydney Australia just to let you know how far your video been going .
I am Persian And really admire what u are doing to teach this instrument :)
your the only one teaching this instrument... its sad that you dont make videos!
Ah man... FINALLY! it took me about 3-4 years but now i can play both turkish and persian ney, remember seeing your video few years back and thought i would never would be able to play this flute.

i love the sound of the Persian ney, thank you!
Thanx for the lessons. I have been playing the Ney for many years, and think these lessons are so clear and useful for the beginners ... :)

Thank you, nice lessons. It really took more than a year to get an impressing sound out of it.
Thanks so much for your time taken to make this video. I asked a friend to get this Nay from Iran for me and I brought it to the US, now learning it and you video has helped so much. God bless you!!!

Thank you. Very valuable.
An hour is very good. Some people take weeks (or forever). It took me 4 hours. You must have talent!

@SaReGaMaTheArtist
It does not damage the teeth unless you use a brass mouthpiece. I play on a plastic mouthpiece or straight on the wood.
great teaching
Many thanks
Kees, you are the best teacher I may say sir I have a question please, I am led to believe that to be able to play persian ney one needs to learn to produce four variety of sounds before being able to play persian ney and please tell me what are these four sounds and how to practice to master these sounds
