Amazing video, as always. Thank you for showing the whole narrative (the colonial history is often conveniently left out when the media is apologizing for and talking about racism). I’m also always impressed with the way you show power and hierarchy as relational. Your videos are always critical and accessible.
Sending you lots of love and support ❤️

I wasn't aware of the negative response from China about this film but I'm glad you talked about it. I'm also half Asian half European and I get really frustrated about. I'm not really part of any Asian community irl outside my immediate family but I hear a lot about racism in the East and it infuriates me. I don't know if you know anything about kpop but Wendy from the girl group Red Velvet recently got into trouble for imitating a black woman. This isn't even the first time she's done this btw. And again, Wendy is actually from Canada, which shows that anti-blackness is also a real problem in the West. Whilst she got into a lot of trouble with international fans, Koreans seemed to be unaware that she was offending anyone. Black people make up a tiny proportion of the population in East Asian countries, so Asians rely on the negative portrayals of black people in American media and pop culture. Hollywood is also super white so they're used to just seeing stories about white people. I find that they are also unaware of the history. I know someone who met a Chinese person who didn't know what the Holocaust was and she had to teach her about it.
So yeah, I'm super glad you've brought it up. Us Asians talking about it and condemning it is a crucial first step.

"Asians rely on the negative portrayals of black people in American media and pop culture"
Wow, what an incredibly racist and western-centric world view.
"Hollywood is also super white so they're used to just seeing stories about white people"
Still incredibly western-centric. Not everything in the world revolves around Americans.
"I find that they are also unaware of the history. I know someone who met a Chinese person who didn't know what the Holocaust was and she had to teach her about it"
Why should Asians know about western history? Do you know about the atrocities committed in asia throughout history? Why don't you educate yourself about Asian history instead.

Oh, Stewart. I love how the first time he appears, he's trying to chew on your sleeve. He's like "Come on, mom, it's the Marina and Stewart Show!"
I love how National Geographic came out, apologized, but also looked into what they did wrong so they can improve it. The coverage they offered this month was pretty great too...stories about police targeting drivers of color, xenophobia vs acceptance (and how segregation causes fear and misunderstanding), how race is a social construct, etc.

as asian living in US, i think america is actually one of the least racist country since they r most exposed to diversity of race and culture. Here in east asia where 99% of the population of korea and japan are in single ethnic group, many lack genuine understanding of racism. I remember koreans and chinese being confused when americans called out the use of black face in many of their comedy shows. Koreans are blatantly racist against Korean-Chinese while Chinese also legally discriminate their muslim population. Tbh, I’m thankful that you brought racism in asian community bc it is so toxic that ppl think that they are exception from racist bigotry since only white ppl are considered racist

I saw another video about the Chinese reviews of Blank Panther that brought atention to the fact that those reviewers had seen the 3D version of the film, most likley on a projector with a bad bulb. This would explain the complaint about things being too dark and black.

Thanks for calling out the colorism thing, as a South Asian/Indian American I see this in my community and it has always struck me as the most hypocritical fuckin thing, especially having grown up in an American context. Do better, indeed!

    • @yunglynda1326
      @yunglynda1326 6 лет назад +1

That's not to say that India isn't an ethnically and religiously diverse country, it is. It happens there, and it boggles my mind that some of those who move to the US don't see the other side of it ( i.e. in India someone may be light but when they come here they are dark and different, and in this context they suddenly aren't the "top" or "preferred" color. One would think that people of my heritage would have cut this shit out when ignorant people started equating our skin color with certain perceptions and religious beliefs but.............)
Take this all with a grain of salt cause I'm thinking of some specific moments and family members who have done this and I'm still frustrated about it haha....

I"ve really enjoyed watching your content lately. I'm from the southeast, so I seldom get much influence from the left in my daily life. Besides this channel, what are some other good places on the internet to hear reasonable and not purposely divisive or demeaning perspectives from left-leaning sources? Besides all of the right-wing and libertarian sources, I pretty much only watch you and Vox as of now, and I would love to hear greater diversity of thought.

Mark Denman Riley Dennis does really good progressive/leftist content (although she’s been a target of harrassment & dogpiling for a while so your recommended videos might be ruined after watching her), Contrapoints makes well produced & hilarious videos on various topics but they’re usually less current events and more general discussions about things, vlogbrothers aren’t really making political content rn but when they do it’s usually liberal leaning and very much facts + compassion oriented, also hbomb, shaun&jen, peter coffin, etc i’m sure someone else will have recommended them already by the time i’ve typed this up ngl

It is pretty irritating that kids are worried about school shootings. That is the fault of the media. I am a forensic psych/criminologist, I have dedicated some 30 years of my life to reducing violence in society so don't get me wrong, I am not saying we shouldn't do anything about it but, the publicity it's getting nowadays is causing kids unnecessary stress.
Kids are, by far, safer at school than anywhere else. They are more likely to die on their ride to or from school. More kids die playing school sports and more kids choke to death in the cafeteria than get shot at school.
The point I am making is we have kids all across the country seriously stressed out over something excessively rare. I couldn't find a solid number but there are roughly 70 million +/- students in the US & how many die in school shootings?
The point I am making is we are causing unnecessary anxiety. Why don't we sit them down every day & lecture them about all the rare, one in a million diseases that can kill them too?
We are complicating mental health issues, stress, anxiety disorders, depression etc over something incredibly rare.

Got some thoughts, gonna try to keep them organized. 1. I'm also really glad National Geographic is owning up to their decades of racism, because like you said, it's so rare that media with so much power does that. However, part of me is like, "REALLY?! REALLY. NO SHIT, SHERLOCK, IMAGINE THAT, DECADES OF RACISM FROM NAT GEO. HOW DID IT TAKE YOU THIS FUCKING LONG TO REALIZE THIS WAS A HUGE PROBLEM?" Maybe I'm getting cynical? Idk, anyone else feel anything similar? 2. That Republican politician who shit-talked the Parkland shooting survivors-how fucking low can you go? It really says something about your political party when ACTUAL CHILDREN are more mature than YOU, AN ACTUAL FUCKING ADULT. I can't. 3. This is totally unrelated to the content of the video, but did you change your hair? It looks really cute. Also, I really enjoy looking at the plushies and figurines on your desk behind you. So far I've recognized Joy and Sadness from Inside Out, and Diane from Bojack Horseman (one of my most favorite shows in the whole world-maybe you could do a review when you have a chance? ). 4. Lastly, awesome video as always! :)

Yes I did! My hair was down to my bellybutton and I finally got it cut. It's so much more manageable now! Aw and thanks. I love my little friends on my desk! (The Tsum Tsums I have are Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Rey, feminist icon Cruz Ramirez, and Rapunzel. The Funko Pops I have are Diane (who I relate FAR too much too), Rey, Jyn Erso, and Joyce Byers. I also have a tiny Peridot figurine too.)

I think politicians as a whole should speak more open and honestly about what they think... but damn that Republican candidate lacks major class. You can disagree without being a total dick.
Also, it’s interesting how much influence Chinese audiences actually have over the production of American films. I’ve only heard this topic covered in passing but I’m interested to read up on it.

My mom was born and raised in an Arab Asian country and is of Indian ancestry and she is QUITE anti-black and colorist. However, she has slowly changed overtime and she wants to watch "Black Panther". Although I'm sure she'll say some racist BS throughout the movie, specially microagressions. I'm curious about what South Koreans and Korean Americans think about the movie since there's a whole scene in South Korea.
