    That was a very good and nuanced approach to the two schools of thought. And I like that line, "not everything a feminist does is a feminist act," though it raises the question of what exactly a feminist act _is._ If a woman decides to study engineering because that's what interests her, is it a feminist act because it subverts gender norms or is it just some individual doing something she wants to do? Does a feminist act have to be a deliberate political statement or can it just be people living their lives as they choose?

    • @eltyo340

      But if it's just people making choices that suit their interests then how do we ensure equality of representation in the work force?

    Thank you so much for the video! Nowadays choice feminism is big issue in South Korea. A few feminists call all the choices women make 'due to patriarchy and misogyny'(as they say) 'corset' and criticize women for doing makeup, going on a diet and so on. This video was very helping and I really love your channel!

    Doesn't this whole framework sort of misunderstand the goal of feminism? It seems like a gross misinterpretation to say that feminism should dictate the decision of the individual either positively or negatively. The dilemma between a collectivist focus vs an individualist focus is only a dilemma because of the overarching power structures and societal systems which constrain women. It makes more sense for feminism to target the destruction of those systems, ignoring the idea of choices in general, assuming that once the power structures have been destroyed any dilemmas will be gone and women choices can go wholly unscrutinized.

    • @zevbliss6180
      @zevbliss6180 6 лет назад +22

      but some “choices” fall more in line with societal expectations than others, and support and normalize oppressive systems.

    • @abbyhatch4986
      @abbyhatch4986 6 лет назад +20

      That is definitely true, but my point is that the focus of feminism should be on those societal expectations and not on the individual choices of women. So a woman isn't unfeminist because she chooses to be a stay at home mom, whether or not she does so due to societal influence.
      To put it another way, the actions of an individual woman can't be feminist or unfeminist, because feminism views society through a systemic lens. It just doesn't work when you try to use it to look at individual choices.
      This also doesn't go for political actions. Obviously a woman arguing against feminist is unfeminist but that's the case be she's taking actions for the oppressive systems, not just because she's a part of them.

    I'm so happy you talked about this, I took a week seminar Africana Womanism at my university, and choice feminism (and obviously lack on intersectionality) is the main reason why many black feminists movements don't adhere to the principles of classic feminism. My professor called it "compulsory feminism" by assuming that any choice a woman makes deems them to not be a feminist or not.

    Thank you for covering this topic! The one I've come closest too is "Can you be a feminist and still like makeup even though it enables beauty standards?" And, as a makeup lover I've found it silly, and not just because I enjoy it more for the art than the other uses. It's possible to enjoy makeup and acknowledge how it's used in society to pin women down; just as it is with most things we enjoy that can be problematic. Banning people from doing things, like makeup, or shaming them is not the answer, it's best to take this things and use them to uplift each other rather than dehumanizing them.

    for example the porn industry: in reality porn benefits men and continues on the idea that women are just objects. We do things like that to prove we have the upper hand put we aren’t criticizing the thing that put us in that position in the first place. Hopefully this makes sense.

    As a transwoman I have received some extent of criticism from certain self proclaimed feminists for conforming into typically feminine interests.
    I love make-up, clothes and all manor of girly things. The point I always use to defend myself is that I am not claiming that those things are feminist acts. I also point out the necessity in those acts for my personal well-being.
    When a person feels comfortable going out in public without makeup they might not realise that isn't something other people are able to feel.
    Never shame women for meeting their own needs. Feminism isn't a stick to beat each-other on the head with. We all take the steps we can and together we move forward.
    I love you all 😊😊

    I'm only at 2:04 in the video, so I don't know if you addressed this, and I only came to this conclusion because of the specific wording you used; Buuuuuuuuttt...I think that it's not "Women are empowered by everything they DO", and instead I think it is, "women are empowered by every CHOICE they make", ;).
    Because this is a unique point in history when the shackling of choice, as well as creative lifestyle choices and expression, based off gendered labels is at an all time low. We are more free to DECIDE who and what we wish to be! This is amazing and totally to be celebrated!
    Even while we still dismantle, deconstruct, and more lucidly reconstruct the antequated gender norms, and constrictions and social conventions of gender labels. We're doing extremely well, and we got this, ;)

    This video reminds me of a question I've been thinking of for a long time. In China there was a tradition called foot-binding. Women would bind their feet from a very young age and such thing really hurts them. However, when people started a movement to free women from foor-binding, it was women who resisted to such movement. They were afraid that without foot-binding they would lose attraction to men. So when they are making a choice, are they really making a choice by themselves or the is the choice actually made by the patriarchal society?

    This stay at home dad thing is tough. Simply because I'm not consistently providing and I guess it has to do with some sort of control. As in, I'm not in control of making sure the bills are paid and taken care of. My wife is almost a year back into the workforce and she's flourishing! She tells me to chill, I deserve this. Hahaha she's a good wife

    • @neuralmute
      @neuralmute 6 лет назад +3

      You don't need to have that control. You trust your wife, right? If she's flouishing and she's got things taken care of, then enjoy your time at home with the kid/s. That's advice straight from my bro-in-law, who spent a while as an at-home dad while my sister was still in her old corporate job, and he was between jobs. He knew that she could manage the finances, and that he was lucky to have extra bonding time with his daughters that most men never get. (These days he's doing the 9-5, and she's running her own business.) I think part of the reason that their whole family is so tight is that they've never let gender expectations get in the way of their relationships. They just do what works, not what they think they should be doing.

    • @CmanVlogga
      @CmanVlogga 6 лет назад +2

      neuralmute yeah, I get it. Its just part of my transition from being the lone provider because I wanted her to get the full experience of our last child. I'm just waiting for them to start the work with me and pay me. I didn't want to leave all the responsibility to her.

    Islamic hijabs would be a good example for this. There are major debates around this between far-left feminists and radical feminists in Europe. The only feminist aspect in choosing „modest dress“ such as the hijab is imo when you subvert its meaning by being deliberately immodest.
    Unless people have few options to do so.
    Both conclusions are ones that far-left feminists consider to be racist, when they promote the hijab half knowing its conservative symbolism and meaning

  • @pestoriusj
    @pestoriusj 6 лет назад +5

    I'm always wary of people who criticise "choice feminism", given that they usually tend to be likely to write similar "can you be a feminist and..." thinkpieces, only they come up with the opposite answer. They also tend to have """opinions""" on trans people. So, while I find choice feminism to be toothless, impotent, and useless, at least it is not actively harmful like much of the people who loudly proclaim their opposition while participating in something very similar.

  • @nietzschesmoustache3585
    @nietzschesmoustache3585 6 лет назад +1

    I think this confusion arises because most people assume that feminism is about securing freedom for women. Thus, they equate their choices with feminism.
    They don't think of women as a class, where the rights of the individual are subordinate to the rights of the collective.

  • @8DX

    Nice video, thank you, everything kind of clicked in place with this one. It's kind of telling that even to get to a number like women only taking up 50% of childcare responsibilities, you'd have have to have *at least* 50% of men willing to hold the other end of the stick and 100% of willing men to be able to call it a "free choice" every woman can make. That or some awesome anarchist collective childcare system...
    Once more thanks!

  • @comicconcarne
    @comicconcarne 6 лет назад +2

    If you want to stay at home and have kids, if you want to go full out dom/sub with your husband, if you want to do traditionally flowery activities... does it really matter if it's feminist or not? Isn't it your right to try to live life as you please? It's not harmful to others to not be subversive, and if someone dares to point to you as a model by which to hold others down, you tell them off and say your lifestyle choice shouldn't determine the fate of women that don't yet have a choice to opt out of it.
    This kind of boils down why I've never called myself "a feminist." Plenty of my ideas are feminist, overlap with some flavors of feminism, but I don't dedicate my life to making the decisions with the right label - though I want all those choices to be open to people. Whenever someone says "so then why don't you call yourself a feminist?" I encounter a "you're not a feminist if" category which I fit and find wholly arbitrary, and I'd rather just act decently and take the feminist ideals that help people than be a pop feminist that ignores the actual issues for the name.

    • @comicconcarne
      @comicconcarne 6 лет назад

      And for your amusement and clarification here's a list of "you're not a feminist if" things I've seen:
      - if you support trans women (love me some terfs),
      - if you have sex with men (enforcing sexualities is so great),
      - if you don't support single payer healthcare (there are more forms of universal healthcare than that and I can so vividly see a nation not covering something like contraceptives or hormone replacement and being the only provider),
      - if you're a capitalist (another label which I share ideas with but don't wholeheartedly take because genuinely free enterprise with historically excluded people would be neat),
      - if you like or support the United States (you can criticize and help your friend while celebrating their good parts)
      - if you are Muslim or support Islam (again tradition as a choice is cool),
      - if you're Christian or support Christianity (hey ho it's the name game),
      - if you're not an anarchist (i can dislike and fight some government policies without overthrowing the government)
      - if you don't go to protests (even if you technically can there are more resources than time and body count),
      - if you don't actively subvert body images and fashion (guess marina isn't a feminist now),
      and many other things that fall outside the boundaries of supporting the betterment of, depending on if you're collective or individual, all womenkind or each and every woman.

    I really thought you were gonna talk about stuff like removing body hair, wearing make-up, changing your last name if you get married to a man (though you did touch on that)...
    This stuff is more "aesthetic" and therefore perhaps simpler, but is still a source for arguments between feminists. So I wonder what your opinion is on that.
    I think that there's no reason why a woman can't be a feminist AND remove body hair, put on make-up etc., but there's also no reason why these things should be considered feminist acts, quite the opposite, they should be looked at critically and be challenged - even if/while we participate in them! We should also think about this stuff, as with being stay-at-home moms under capitalism, as not entirely a free choice under patriarchy.

    Wait! Wait! I know this is completely off topic but I need answers. Is a Jewish person considered a person of color? That term always seemed so vague. Does it describe someone who does not LOOK white or someone who is not GENETICALLY more majority white? And, to be clear, when I say Jewish I am talking about the race, not the religion. I am ethnically Jewish, not religiously.

    Frankly, “choice feminism” just seems like a radfem strawman of liberal feminism. Liberal feminism is, and always has been, against any constraint on women’s liberty, whether it’s coming from traditional gender roles or radfem’s confused notions of empowerment. Pretending that isn’t the case because of some cosmopolitan articles is just dishonest.

    I watched the video and read the articles and while I found them all very informative I was left feeling a little fustrated. Obviously the choices that women make are affected by their social and political standing in their society and a whole lot of external factors. But is there a world even with a toppled partriachy and a dismantled capitalistic government where this wouldn't be true? For everyone of all gender identities and ethnic and cultural backgrounds? While there is reason to question whether as many women would choose to have children or become sex workers if they weren't being influenced by external factors, can't the same be said for women in STEM? Women are influenced by external factors telling them to subvert traditional societal roles too and driven to take jobs for money in all sectors. I came away from one of the articles in particular feeling like what was said is that you'll never truly be free from all outside influences so you'll never truly know if you made your choices entirely because you wanted them. While entirely agree with this I think this applies to all choices not just ones that are viewed as choices forced upon us by the patriarchy or capitalism. Sure you could apply it to child rearing but you could also apply it to becoming a doctor depending on your upbringing. I think life is hard enough without having to dissect and defend every choice you make.

      I'm pro-masculine values for men and women alike -- practically anyone who wants to be a leader or pioneer. One of the great things about masculine values is that it broadens the range of freedom since it doesn't allow for a victimhood mindset. Take Amelia Earhart who embraced these masculine values and rejected feminine values:
      "A woman who can create her own job is the one who will win fame and fortune." -- Amelia Earhart
      "The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its own reward." -- Amelia Earhart
      If it wasn't for the references towards women and the name of the person who said this, these would be in the hall of fame for masculine quotes. Yet feminists reject and attack these Stoic type of values as "toxic". If they reject these values and succumb to a victimhood mindset, they'll never enjoy the freedoms of a great man let alone a great woman because they'll be distraught by the smallest hurdle they encounter in their goals while strong men and women casually leap over them. Great men and women have the greatest of freedoms because they don't have this type of feminist mindset where they feel the need to change the rest of society in order to achieve anything. These days feminists embody the values of sore losers, not winners, down to literally wanting participation trophies for losing.
      Theorizing about the reasons you can't achieve success is not the way to become successful in a free society. That's not to say that society isn't harsh and oppressive. However, a bully victim who can't change himself/herself and learn how to stand up for himself/herself is going to be a victim for the rest of his/her life and will not be able to enjoy the freedoms of those who learn to develop the strength to conquer adversity. The biggest problem I have with feminism these days is that it promotes the bully victim mindset and instead seeks to eradicate the world of bullies -- that's a utopian ideal. Man up already, and then you can enjoy the freedoms as well as the burdens of a man.

    I think there are good points here, but I think that we can be really dismissive of women who play the "can I be a feminist and?" game.
    This is not directed at you but there are a lot of attacks on women who ask these questions and like... It is hard? Trying to balance your feminism is hard work and the feminists who shame them seem to have forgotten that.
    And I think that we, as a vague community, haven't done much to help when a lot of our language shames women for the choices they make instead of saying "hey, yes, major the choices that best suit you, but let's also make an effort to understand why those choices are often so socially loaded".
    The complete dismissal of individual empowerment instead of allowing women to feel empowered by what they want to but also educate people is detrimental and sometimes comes off kind of like internalised misogyny.
    Like, let's address the fact that women are pushed to wear makeup, but let's not make fun of the girl who is proud of her winged eyeliner so sharp it could kill a man.

    This vid illustrates why the word "feminist" needs to be retired. So many definitions, so many adjectives necessary to define just what sort of feminist you are, so many disagreements among feminists themselves. Some feminists want equality with men; some want hegemony over men. Some refuse to accept trans women as women, some welcome them. The 2019 women's marches were ruined because White women, Black women, and Jewish women couldn't agree on a plan. The .001%, the tiny group of people who hold most of the real power, sit back and laugh while we down below argue about who's a real feminist and who isn't. ¶ I sometimes refer to myself as GEM, a Gender Equality Man. It's clumsy, not likely to gain currency, but it pretty plainly means I see no difference in the inherent goodness of different genders, while not denying the meaningful differences among them.

    How is it relevant whether or not you chose your life situation to how feminist you are? Like, if you're pressured by your family/other people to be a stay at home mum with 10 kids and have no way to escape that, you can still believe in feminism and do whatever you have the freedom to do to live it. "Risk your life or you're not a real feminist" sounds like a weird rule. (Or maybe I just got this video all wrong, also possible)

    I feel like this misses the point of the critique made by zeisler and hirshman. It’s not only criticizing women who don’t have equal access or ability to make certain choices, like working class women getting childcare or minors accessing abortions, and limiting your response to “it doesn’t include everyone” fails to address the substance of the argument, that some commitment is demanded by the mantle of “feminist,” and that there are choices that are inherently unfeminist. Whether you’re from a traditionally Italian Christian family or not, no matter how personally important it might be, you must recognize that traditional weddings are forms of symbolic and legal domination.

D: so I’m not 100% sure what the video was saying. I got that you can choose what you want but it’s not feminist? I’m just still a bit confused. Sorry for my bad hearing.

      ᏆᎾᏗᎣᎭ O.o I'll try to summarize it a bit. Choice feminism would be the trend that we see lately that media presents anything a woman does as inherently feminist because a woman chose to do it. Marina critizises choice feminism as well as some opposite views that say that women should always choose something that's opposite to gender roles because that's the only feminist choice

    • @isaberuteuki
      @isaberuteuki 6 лет назад +1

      Being a stay at home mom is not inherently a feminist choice just because a woman chose it. At the same time it doesn't make sense to tell every woman not to be one, because if they do they aren't feminists. This is a sterile debate. What we need is to fight so women can actually choose, without pressure from gender roles, or because of money or other systems of opression

    Recently I watched a movie written & directed by a woman Coralie Fargeat, titled Revenge. After watching it, I was like "Did a woman just direct a misogynist movie?".
    Sure, the plot is quite feminist as the character Jen is taking matters into her own hands. But the first third of the movie, the woman is sexualised with camera shots and by the guys she interacts with. And the violence she experiences is quite extreme.
    The movie makes up for it when the roles are reversed and the title reflects what happens in the rest of the film.
    Could you do your own review/analysis of the movie? I'd love to see how you feel about it.

  • @IsaacDavis69

    Maybe you were getting at this but I would say that another huge problem with choice feminism is its distinct apolitical nature which ultimately distracts from actual forms of feminism that create political and social movements that can improve the status of women, queers and gender nonconforming people. What won the emancipation of enslaved Africans, the 14th amendment, women's suffrage, an end child labor, Social Security and Medicare, the Voting and Civil Rights Acts, abortion rights, Title IX, The ADA, marriage equality, etc? Collective struggle and political action (political meaning things having to do with the apprehension and distribution of power in society), do you know what didn't? *buying a smoothie or some shit!* The ruling class does this constantly though; they take genuinely potentially liberatory things like feminism and commodify them thereby simultaneously defanging them and turning them into something that can be used to make profits for the ruling class and reproduce capitalism and systemic oppression.
    I really enjoyed this video, really great stuff, this particular term "choice feminism" was something that I was completely unaware of so I definitely learned something. Thank you.

    "Can you be a femist and still love game of thrones despite graphic depiction of sexual violence against women". I swear to got, soon you won't be able to even put a scratch on a female without it being critised by feminists. If it treated seriously and respectfully then yes. I haven't watched GoT yet but I know that male characters experience violent act equally damaging as sexually violence but most feminists won't complain about that. That's just another example of the double standards plaguing the modern day femism. And also another reason for people to avoid associating themselves with feminism despite wanting equality in society.
