- A very enjoyable afternoon spent at Edinburgh Waverley which is the northern terminus of the East Coast Mainline where we see plenty of services from Abellio Scotrail, Cross Country and Transpennine Express.
Edinburgh Waverley started its life off as three separate stations all built by different companies, the first was the North Bridge built by the North British Railway which ran a line from Berwick to Edinburgh. You then had the General station opened a year later in 1847 by the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway and finally in the same year we had the Canal Street station opened by the Edinburgh, Leith and Newhaven Railway.
In 1868 the North British Railway brought the stations from its competitors and then subsequently demolished all three including their own. But they did so with a plan to build a new grand station located in the heart of the capital. They closed the Scotland Street Tunnel to Canal Street. Waverley station has been in continuous use since it was built in the late 1880's, the station has been looked after by North British Railway, LNER, British Railways which eventually became British Rail in 1965, Railtrack and now Network Rail. After the line was extended through the tunnels to Haymarket it became the busiest railway station in the city, there was a second station there but it wasn't anywhere near as important. It was Princes Street run by the Caledonian Railway.
British Rail brought electrification to Edinburgh in 1991 which allowed for full electric running of trains from London Kings Cross all the way along the ECML to the Scottish Capital.
My next station is Haymarket.
A special shout out goes to George Jackson as I am to believe it is your birthday this month!

I like those class 385 trains. And I *love* those turbostars
2:23 I agree with what you said. The livery does look stunning. I like it.
They really do have a great livery applied to their trains!
2:23 I agree with what you said the livery looks stunning I like it
Excellent video and the livery on ScotRail HSTs looks very good 👍
Thanks very much, the livery looks great on them
The Fife Circle trains that is, Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath trains would in normal times usually be packed. In hact Fife to Edinburgh commuters gave huge complaints with Scotrail about over crowding on the Fife Circle. Anyway, really enjoyed this video.
This Station is officially my favourite Station ever. went to Edinburgh last week also went to Glasgow Queen Street which was ok Glasgow Central is very run down especially the lower levels but nonetheless Glasgow is ok. Edinburgh is my favourite city and has my favourite Station Waverley and I am very happy to have been up there. I love Scotland. I want to go back.
Some great liveries around these parts, and some beautiful models. With all the buggery that went into this stations birth, she really is something to behold. Props to Scotrail and their 43's, 170's perfect. Those 334's and 158's are pretty sweet too. Thanks for another fantastic film, 5:30am - 6:02am time well spent ;}
The Scotrail livery really does look good on their trains. Probably one of the more appealing liveries to look at throughout the UK. I'm glad enjoyed watching this!
Proper stuff as always. Just do us a favor yeah, stay safe with you and your family, take care eh!
I like the female scottish announcements for trains. It sounds very relaxing, genuine and friendly compared to the Anne announcements which sounds tense and robotic. Agree with you with ScotRail livery, it's very professional you'd think it's an airport express train!!
I agree I think Anne sounds tense and unfriendly
@@reecelucasfilms don't get me started on SWR Roger. It's a poor man's Phil Sayer. The best announcements voices has to be Phil Sayer and Celia Drummond, they sound authentic and posh. So posh it suits the Southwest Very nicely!! SWR roger, just sounds robotic, the tempo is uneven i.e long pauses then saying the station name fast. If new announcements sound like TTS, I hope that the company who implemented it ####s off!! By the way SWR are disappearing for good.
@@nightelectricityuniverse7349 defo 👍 I like celia
Celia Drummond recently replaced Anne at Manchester Victoria, I prefer Celia to Anne.
@@elliotreed6118 lovely!! I just wish Celia Comes back to the Southwest. It just works!!
Well, I took a leaf out of your book and went to Lime Street on Monday. Managed to get a Nova 3 set, and.... oh, that sound is glorious. The sound resonated through the entire station.
Well I'm glad to hear that you had a great time there!
@@Tornado922 One of the best days out I've had in a long time. Were you able to get up to York last week, to see UoSA and Britannia?
No I didn't get the chance to go there. I did however see Britannia when I was going through Crewe on my way to Preston that day
@@Tornado922 It really was gorgeous. I hope you had fun in Preston that day; it's always a good station, lots of Civity sets now that the 397s are getting into service.
Great video. Pity there was no LNER or Avanti just to keep a good variety. Keep up the good work.
Thanks very much, if I had gone to the southern end of the station I would've seen the LNER services but sadly time was against me so I wasn't able to get there
Also there was a reduced service on lner that day so wasn't much around due to engineering works further south
Nice video! Loving the 380s!
Thanks very much
Always straight into these videos, loved it again.
Thank you kindly!
Excellent video from one of Scotland's top stations. I don't mind the gaffs on place names because it adds to the comedy flavor of the video. Looking forward to the Haymarket video. Regards Gary.
Thanks very much, this is a great station to come to. The gaffs are all part and partial of the films haha
Great video. Very interesting as I'm planning on doing some trainspotting myself in a couple of weeks, so glad to see a good video from there. I agree with you, the ScotRail livery does look brilliant
Thanks very much, this was a great station to come to. You would definitely want to do both south and north sections of the station to catch a bit of everything
Thank you very much. Brilliant as always
Not a problem! Thanks for the watching
Great video. Glad you had fun at Edinburgh Waverley Station. :)
Thanks very much, this is a great station to come to
@@Tornado922 you're welcome. :)
Love the class 170 Turbostars.
They do look good!
I live in Edinburgh!!!
Well you live in a great city!
Great video Tornado922 I do like the livery as well.
Thanks very much, certainly is a great livery to look at
Great Video Tornado922, I was literally filming there last Saturday.
Thanks very much, I hope you had a great time!
@@Tornado922 There was more ScotRail then anything else really
Another Brilliant Video Tornado922 I Really Enjoyed This :)
Thanks very much
Was such a fun day, great laughs
It was such great fun. Be great to do it again in the future!
The 334s are part of the Juniper family and built by Alstom
I've been watching lots of your videos recently, and have really enjoyed them. I love the commentaries!
Thank you kindly for saying so!
The gun fire at the start was probably the 1 O'Clock gun fired from the castle every day at 1PM.
also the class 334's were built by Alstom and are part of the Juniper family same as the Class 460.
Righteo thanks very much for the information!
For all these people who are thinking 'OMG this guy is an idiot he is so bad' Just think: Can you do this, travelling and trainspotting for the joy of your fans? No. Jarred is doing something very unique and there is nothing wrong with it!
don't see anybody who is thinking this here so this comment is not necessarily needed here 😉
Still, there are people out there. 😁
@@leccystar very true!!! There are still haters around.
Yup, and I don't want any good YT having those people.
My home city!!!
Certainly is a good one
Just to let you know.
Milngavie is pronounced mull guy
Its actually pronounced "mull guy".
voxley19 oh
ill tell you becuse iam from edinbrugh
Great video ,good luck saying the Scottish names .
Thanks very much, well seeing as I can't even get some English names correct it only seems fitting at I completely bugger up the Scottish ones
Tornado922 👍😂
Saw the notification dropped what i was doing and clicked, is it just me or does scotrail livery look great
tbh i have to agree I hope that livery stays like that during service with EMR soon
The 43 ;}
Awesome video man! Keep it up,
Would you do nuneaton again absolutely love nuneaton! Get loads of class 70s as you probably know 👍🏻🙂
Thanks very much, I will be going back to Nuneaton at some stage this year for one of my rush hour films so I'm sure I will be catching no end of 70's running around :)
@@Tornado922 look forward to watching that mate! :)
I've been there once!
@Cartoons - It's a very nice place isn't it
Woah, another good video as always, Will you ever do any Trainspotting on the Merseyrail territory? I think you would like Liverpool central the best for the frequency. Keep up the good work! :)
Thanks very much, I don't think I would go onto the Merseyrail network as there is next to no variety to be seen, but I appreciate the recommendation anyway!
Tornado922 yes I do agree, the only stations where you can get 2 operators on the same platform are hunts cross, Ormskirk and Southport. Southport is a good station to go to because you get more frequent 6 car services and northern services too 👍🏻
Not impressed by the Scotrail HST decor - it looks like a severe case of paint peeling off! - - - I've only been to Waverley once, on a West Coast steam-hauled tour. At ten to departure, there were about 200 baffled bodies wandering around the station 'square' looking for the train - nothing on the departures board. Finally found a staff-member, and asked where the train was - to be told it was on a secret platform hidden by the brick wall that looks like the back of the station! Picture 200 bodies trying to get up the stairs, and over the walkway, some hobbling on sticks, etc!
That sounds like an absolute shambles of a day that was out together when you went there. I rather like the decals on the Scotrail HST
Tornado did you know another way to get the number on the Scotrail class 170 s is to look at the end of each coach and the last 3 numbers are the numbers of the train
I know that bud, the XC 170's are the same
When will you post the haymarket video
HI, Richard here
Let me know if you are coming to Ashford this year
I'll be sure to let you know!
Class 334’s were built by Alstom. There part of the juniper family along with the 458’s
Thanks for the info!
Great video Mate
Thanks very much
The Waterloo And City Line is always closed on Sundays
Why do I need to know that?
@@Tornado922 lol
Could some one tell me where Lner is
They don't feature in this film
Tornado922 why not don’t wavely use
Lner as well
fan fans because where I was filming this from you don't see LNER unless the Inverness train turns up
Tornado922 ok
I saw that lnwr 350 at slatford on that day I think
ok
I love the Scottish accent love your videos btw
Thanks very much!
speaking of Charing Cross at 1:47 can you go to London Charing Cross
I love Scot rail
They operate some very scenic routes and have a great livery on their trains
Can you go on The other side next time
great video!
I feel sorry for you; I used to live next to Haymarket and the Scottish towns are hard to pronounce.
In my video of Waverley i pronounced Arbroath wrong!!
Thanks very much, getting the names wrong is all part and parcel of the game haha. I don't think I'll ever get them right
Goos station...my aunt is about a stones throw from you there....her house that is lol
Well she certainly lives in a good area of the city haha
Liked it
The 334's where built by Alston. Milngavie is pronounced Mil-guy.
Thanks for that
It's funny you should say avanti west coast because none of their trains appeared in the video
If I were there 10 minutes longer I would have filmed one coming in from London Euston
You should go to Rochester
Any particular reason as to why I should go there?
@@Tornado922 they rebuilt the station good mix of high speed service and normal commuter services
Can u do my home city of newcastle upon Tyne on the ecml
I'll be getting it done at some stage this year but I can't say when that will be
In first class you get free coffee and tea and sancks
Right ok, I didn't know that
Where was AWC and LNER
From where I was filming none were to be seen
5.14 Glenrothes is spelt THORNTON. Check Google Maps. There is NO railway station in Glenrothes despite what Scotrail think.
I'll have to check that when I get the chance
I have to agree with you on the station and Scotrail Livery, I may be biased in my opinion with a sir name like mine.
Cheers
Greg Bruce
it's a great station to go to and the livery really does look good on all of the units that they have
Can you go on the Other side
Next time I come here I will give it a go for you
Ok I love your videos 🤩
Awww shame, why didn’t you go on the Eastern end of the station! Because if that, you gained a dislike, an area of improvement there. But overall, good video.
Well I appreciate your honesty however time was against me on the day I filmed this so I stayed u at the busier end of the station. If I had more time I would've gone down to the southern end of the station to the LNER services
Milngavie is pronounced mul-guy
Aberdeen Jarrad
It is pronounced mil-guy not mil in gavie pls save me the pain as a Scottish person and please kindly never ever say mil-in-gavie ever again thanks and I’d say the same to any other person pronouncing it wrong
Cowdenbeath is pronounced “Cow-den-Beef”
I'll try and remember that for my next time up here
