Small detail but I really love that Mantis and Rocket knew Steve and Bucky's names respecively and Mantis felt it appropriate to give "Steve" a hug upon seeing him. Just adds to the idea of what happened in between scenes during the end of Endgame. They were obviously all at Tony's funeral but little things like this give off a sense they probably celebrated their victory and spent time sharing war stories together
It's also like, the cutest scene ever
Oh yeah probably at the funeral to remember the good times with tony
So why is everyone on Earth surprised to see a space ship.
@@johnharris6655 cause the last time an alien ship was on earth, it belonged to a genocidal megalomaniac
@@anubhabsaha5676 Not to mention that those living in Hollywood probably only saw the alien ships on the news, not in person.
Ripping someone's arm off for a christmas present is just about the most in-character thing for Nebula to do
And her patting in to the group hug and her quick wave too. It was so cute to see her almost smile when Groot gave her a gift bc she was genuinely surprised by someone doing something kind.
@@licia1130smilez I felt proud seeing Nebula being with a wild but real family and having these moments.

I did *not* know mantis could cling to the walls like spiderman but it totally makes sense.
Yeah, Mantis is kinda crazy. She also married an alien that looked like The Swordsman (Kate Bishop's Stepfather in the MCU) in the comics.
@@luigiboi4244 Really??? Wow.
@@luigiboi4244 Looked like him because it was him, it's a whole weird thing
or jump like that
Maybe my favorite Easter egg/detail in the whole MCU is how it’s implied that the Guardians just learned how to understand Groot over time. They needed Rocket to translate for all of Vol. 1 and most of Vol. 2, but by the teenage Groot mid-credits scene in Vol. 2 they (or at least Quill) can perfectly understand him. It makes perfect sense, and it’s never formally acknowledged, but that just makes it better.
Swole Groot really looked like a guy in a costume, but you know he's full CGI. Even better is they gave him a baby face too.
Part of what makes it cool is that it's just there, happening. No one has to make a big pointing out of it, and they don't resort to subtitling him. They just let Groot be translated by how others react to him.
@@SwiftpawWolffox "I am Groot!" *translation: it adds nuance to the universe that there are those who understand him clearly, and those who pick up on what he's saying just by watching him."
Too much skin around the fin
It's exactly like Chewbaca now and it's great
I loved Mantis in this special. In her other appearances, she’s been more on the passive side, but now she’s got a bit more of a personality, and I can honestly say, seeing her get angry was hilarious and made her so much more engaging as a character
I like her
She is a pacifist but that doesn’t mean she’s nice all the time. It’s far more entertaining and I wish they kept that personality in the upcoming film because I enjoy watching her snap.
She had a couple small moments like that, but having it centered on her really brought them out
I like to think it was her participation in the endgame finale that helped her unleash her inner badass
You know what I love about Drax and Mantis? Mantis has all the hallmarks of a “born sexy yesterday” heroine, a female lead whose hotness is only matched by their easily exploitable naïveté. Like Leeloo from Fifth Element or Madison from Splash. In most stories, she’d be paired off with the straight male protagonist and crafted into his dream girlfriend, but Gunn didn’t do that. Instead her main interaction in her various appearances is with Drax the Destroyer, a character easily more awkward and clueless of social conventions than she is. Their relationship is balanced, adorable, and hilarious, and by this point, she’s reached peak integration into the wider world and while she’s still naïve about a lot of things, she can easily keep pace with Drax and enjoys an equal friendship with him. It’s perfect.
It's pretty weird you felt the need to sexualize a non-sexualized character...
@@Colechamdiceman my point is that she subverts a trope that always does.
Sure, but that first part could've been phrased better... 🤔
That’s a good point, I never noticed this. Thanks for pointing this out!
@@elise3455 It literally couldn’t have. “Born Sexy Yesterday” is the name of the trope, and when you’ve seen it in action enough times, you know there’s no better term for it. Don’t shoot the messenger.
Mantis snapping at Drax is an entire mood.
her entire character in the special was a whole mood lmao
@@SilvaShadow1990 true…very true
That was definitely a "WOAH" moment for me. And, yeah, it is an entire mood.
@@SilvaShadow1990 Probably the most realistic moment of the whole MCU, and the true meaning of Christmas.
Something I like about this special is that Disney Marvel gave Drax a vest to wear. For those who don't know Batista has voiced in the past that sometimes he feels self conscious about his body in the role, and asked Marvel if he could possibly wear a shirt. It's nice to see him get that.
Merry Christmas and happy Holidays to you all, may you all rock out and laugh just as hard as Draxx when he gets his elf decorations.
But it's been established that vests with pockets are amazing and useful! Hell, they got ScarJo to make a whole movie about it.
Well, he did say he has very sensitive nipples.
@@dominikbeitat4450 lol
I guess drax has developed less sensitive nipples over the past decade or so
But his sensitive nipples! 😂
Seriously though, I hope this gives Dave the confidence to continue on as Drax. He’s perfect for it.
9:54 Of course Nebula has the best dance moves. Don't you know Dance Fighting is one of her strengths?

@@wanderlustwarrior Yes, that too. I miss her Scottish accent.
I think this is actually my favourite MCU project to date. It’s short but so so sweet.
Loved seeing:
- Mantis stepping into the spotlight
- Cosmo becoming part of the team
- Groot growing out of his adolescent phase and being a fun-loving adult
- Drax just being a big kid with his little funny man
- Nebula starting to find the best version of herself as the member of a loving family
- The implication that Nebula loves Rocket enough to travel to earth and rip Bucky’s arm off his body for him. Loved that detail especially after they spent 5 years together after the Snap
- Yondu being a big softie at heart
- Kraglin getting to the emotional core of the special
- Rocket getting Bucky’s arm
- Quill getting a sister after losing so much
- The Old ‘97s creating two incredible new Christmas songs
- Kevin Bacon throwing so much fun and sentiment into the MCU
- James Gunn continuing to bring the laughs and the feels ❤️
As well as Chris and Pom selling the happiness of Peter and Mantis having each other as their last family.
I Agree! This Special is So Sweet and it's just the Perfect Christmas Gift from Marvel!
A small detail that I really love is that Peter has such a positive reaction to Mantis being his sister. It makes sense because between his dead mom and his evil space dad, he doesn’t have any blood-related relatives other than her.
But now we know that his mom's father is still alive.
First time seeing a project I worked on on CinemaWins! A little surreal. This was a lot of fun to be a part of, and I can't wait to see the greater part of our work in Vol. 3 next year.
Fun fact: The cop in the driver's seat of the flipped car is the head of Marvel Security in Georgia, simultaneously the cuddliest man you'll ever meet and also absolutely terrifying if you're caught taking pictures on set.
I love Guardians, this was done so well! Also that’s such a fun fact lol
I'm sorry, but I have to know. Some guy got mad at the Celestials, boom, looped one's head off and suspended it in orbit as a show of power. Now Knowhere is scoured for resources/home base for the Guardians.
What I have to wonder about, whetever happened to the body? I'm not even thinking about this like some headless Celestial will return to life, scouring the place for its head, I just wonder where the rest of the body ended up. Knowhere became a mining base, wouldn't the body also have been an even greater source of resources for people to pick clean? Unless the body floated into the path of a sun and broiled up or fell into an event horizon, it would still have to be out there somewhere.
@@iantophernicus6042 I don't know man I just sent emails and picked up lunch
Fun Fact:
The Guardians’ new ship is actually called “The Bowie”, Cause of David Bowie.
Amazing lol
Of course Peter would name it that 😂
I felt that Mantis spends a lot of time with Drax, and being an empath means that she's absorbed elements of his personality. Her anger seemed very Drax-like.
This special was so much better than it had any right to be.
This was exactly my thought when I watched it. Out of all the Marvel movies, the Guardians aren't even close to my favorites... but this instantly became my all-time favorite Christmas special. This was so amazing.
@@JaRyCu they aren't even close to your favourites? Genuinely surprising. The first guardians is my favourite movie of all time and the second one is by far the most emotional I'm got at a superhero movie. It's a bit of a choppy mess but wow does it make me cry like a baby

I loved this holiday special, it was especially good to see Kevin Bacon in the Guardians Of The Galaxy universe!
Makes six degrees of kevin bacon way earlier though
This also means that the next time that Bacon appears in the MCU, it could be him or a character from the multiverse. *cough* Sebastian Shaw *cough*

He was also the villain in "Super". Another James Gunn superhero movie.
James Gunn really knows his way around an unconventional Christmas song. "I Don't Know What Christmas Is" will probably be a staple of the season now.
both the songs the Old 97s do have been added to my Christmas playlist on spotify, so I'd say you're right, at least for my house.
That's not Mark Hamill? If it were me on the witness stand at a murder trial, I'd 100% point at him and say, "That's the man, right there." Luke Skywalker would fry on the electric chair.

The madman did it on Christmas Eve this is why we love you.
Did what? Press upload? Make public?
@@TheStormbringer8751 he did the holiday special finally on Christmas Eve
@@nicolaseasdale1394 ...yeah, ill second the other guy and ask... what? Who did what on Christmas eve finally? Like there have been dozens of shows or movies that take place on Christmas eve... are you saying that Gunn finally did one on Christmas eve? If so, what other Christmas shows has Gunn worked on? If not, literally, what are you talking about?
SO FUNNY they finally gifted The Winter Soldier's Mech Arm that he had his eyes on going back all the way to Infinity War.
It's precisely those seemingly Irrelevant details that in fact have become one of the many things that Gunn has become known for in his films. It's precisely that level of attention he pays to even the tiniest little detail that has come to set him and his unique voice apart from everyone else!
Absolutely-- that was quality present in all of Gunn's work and most of phase 1 to 3. And it's missing from most of phase 4 and 5. Knowing the lore. Taking the extra time to find the *right* song instead of a generic song. Going over the script a 4th and 5th time to add in foreshadowing and call backs and turn seemingly simple scenes into extra character development moments with payoffs later.
The MCU (...Disney) has a problem with going too gynocentric and misandrist (aka "woke") lately but the main issue is the slapdash, lazy, unpolished writing and plotting that comes with that. ( I mean seriously... a show about lawyers where *none* of the writers knew about lawyers and they didn't call in a legal expert to vet things?)
This special had no right being as sweet and wholesome as it was but I'm so happy we got this! Merry Christmas everyone!
Better than the Star Wars holidays special of 1978 😂
Did you notice that the little dashboard creature Peter got for Yondu was the first one? This means that Peter started the whole thing and now I’m emotional
James Gunn plays the scene music on the set while filming
... So the actors can work with the tempo and rythim of the song and exchange dialogue in time with the music So it all fits nicely in the finished scene.
I know most likely Rocket having Bucky's arm won't remain canon or Rocket will return it, but at the same time I kind of hope the next time we see Bucky he just has an entirely different robot arm and no one addresses it.
Lol that would be funny
This is the kind of special needs to be more of for future specials.
Avengers: Holiday Special, please 😬
Finally watched it and it was way better than what I expected. Just the right balance of funny and wholesome. Making Pom and Dave lead the show was such a good idea.
Somehow Nebula dancing at the Christmas festival is the biggest physical representation of her personal evolution from GoG to GoG3.
To me when Yondu says “I HATE CHRISTMAS!!” I feel like it’s a homage to How The Grinch Stole Christmas (Jim Carrey version) when tiny Grinch lifts up and yeets the Christmas tree and says that he hates christmas (also the reference to OG Friday The 13th)
James Gunn really captured the essence of cheesy holiday specials; from opening with an original composition by a likeable band, to having an obviously forced moral lesson with Drax and Mantis, and of course centering the special around a famous actor. Top tier stuff.
Merry Christmas everyone, 🎅🎄

One thing I love is how accepting Quill is and downright excited he is to have Mantis as a sister. The guardians really are a family, at this point. Peter the Dad who's goofy but responsible for everyone after Mom(Gamora) left and kept him in charge. Groot and Rocket are the father/son dynamic from Vol 2 to here where Groot went from lovable baby to lovable adult taking care of the senile old man that, let's be honest, Rocket is in this episode. Then the bickering siblings are Drax and Mantiz, and Nebula's the cool aunt while Cosmo's without a doubt the family dog. But I love them. They feel the most like a family than all the other families in the MCU. Vol 3's gonna have me in tears seeing even the slightest sadness on any of them ;w; Loved this video, your content always brings a smile to my face when I'm struggling to feel good.
Kraglin's the dad (taking after Yondu). Peter is the firstborn with all the unwanted responsibility.
Loved the special but that speech to Kevin Bacon about why Peter always idled him deserved more wins and more screen time, and Kevin Bacon's reaction when Mantis removed the spell deserved more wins. Even the lead up with Peters face turn from quizzical to confused to worried was amazing.
Took a minute to realize what word you were going for with "idled" but finally figured out you meant "idolized". But change the z to an s if you're in a country that uses the Queen's English as it's primary or second language.
@Inna Gotta Davida yeah, auto correct can be a bitch.
But yes, idolized is a much better word. Thank you for pointing it out. And yes, in the UK it's spelled idolised
I love that everyone recognizes how terrifying and hilarious it was seeing Mantis leaping around Kevin Bacon's house.
As someone that hasn’t been a fan of the comedy of Marvel as of late due to it feeling forced, the wholesomeness family feel of this whole special was so amazing and a great way to show how much the guardians love each other
❤
Yeah, I hope the rest of Marvel takes notes. The humor of the Guardians films has always made me laugh, but I was _roaring_ with this one.
The Guardians are just naturally funny characters. When they say a joke, it doesn't feel like the writers forcing a joke, it feels like the character is just goofing off.
Nebula giving Rocket Bucky’s Arm was by far the best part of this special and it was hysterical

One odd detail I took from this, GoBots are part of the MCU conon?! GoBots killed Drax's cousin?! How? Why?
Are transformers canon too then?
@aidenbarker9978
In a round about way, they should be, but probably aren't. Back in the 80s, Transformers was a Marvel property. Marvel writers established all the G1 personalities. In the comics, you had crossovers with established Marvel characters. But in years since, the comic rights went to IDW. The really weird thing is that in 1991 (had to look it up) Hasbro (who makes the Transformers toys) bought Tonka, who made GoBots. And in the IDW comics, the GoBots are considered a parallel among the Transformers Multiverse.
But currently, Disney owns the rights to neither. Here you have a cosplayer dressed as Cy-Kill, which shocked me. And then the line, "GoBots killed his cousin!" Had me searching the internet to see if the Mouse got his hands on GoBots. So weird that that line means they exist in the MCU, and not just as a fictional property, like Batman, Happy Days, Footloose, or Friday the 13th (at least part 2). Of they killed Drax's cousin, they are as real to the MCU as the Eternals, or Moon Knight.
James Gunn is always a win.
I'm going to be sad if/when he turns/loses it.
Indeed though James is now a sour taste for some DC fans now that he’s the new head of DC films and the decisions Gunn has made. I’m not one of those angry fanboys but you know the backlash that he’s getting with the recasting, cancelling several planned DCEU films and pissing off Synderverse groupies.
@@bladersmosh I got admit, I'm not looking forward to yet another origin story for the same characters. I'm old enough that I've seen so many of them I'm only interested in origins of new characters, not the 10th or 12th reboot or hot new take on characters I've been seeing for decades.
@@RecklessFablesThat’s fair but I think at least at this point it’s needed for the current iteration of the DCU. Snyder made so many flimsy B or even C tier films it’s hard to get invested in it like you can with the MCU. Gunn has shown he’s actually invested in making good comic book movies (this is a great example, but even things like Suicide Squad 2 were fantastic).

I love how much Mantis' anger reminds of Drax'. It's pretty much exactly how I would expect her to start learning to act on her other emotions after having survived a lifetime of servitude under Ego. She's an empath and therefore the new emotion she leans into to get comfortable with she will first copy from someone else and then bit by bit make it her own.
I liked how Drax regarded the manger scene in front of the theater. It was a quiet nod to the family he lost.
Gotta admit I kinda relate to Nova's attitude to some degree. It's like she cares for her friends/family but finds lifting a finger to express such feelings to be bothersome, then goes around and gives the most expensive/amazing gifts. As a deeply introverted guy, I'm the same way, it's not like I hate my friends, just words are not my strong suit and I like my personal time, so gifts are sort of the most comfortable way I express such fondness.
Did you mean Nebula?
Mantis was absolutely hilarious in this, Pom knocked it out of the park this time and we've never seen the character have this much personality

There's something about Nebula giving Rocket Bucky's arm that gets me really choked up. Something about her grumpy, begrudging thoughtfulness combined with how Rocket is genuinely moved to have received the gift. What started as a goofy one liner in Infinity War turned into something really sweet.
Marvel at it's finest, really
I just want a 10 minute scene about the arm heist and the aftermath of Bucky crawling to Shuri like "hey... so-"
So many changes in the MCU, but it's good to know the Guardians are still around 😊
GOTG Christmas Special was what we all needed after 2 years of putting up with covid. Pom & Dave really stole the show & I wish they'd make an Easter Special with Rocket & Groot chasing after the Easter Bunny. The Mantis & Drax duo bounced off each other so well with a great comedic script. Kudos to Kevin Bacon trying to play himself lol.

I really love how Groot seems to be taking influence from the other men in the GotG with his appearance. Drax and Thor are big, so Groot wants to be big too (At least, I think that's why he looks swole 😅)
If James Gunn put this much love and care into a Christmas Special then we can safely say DC is in good hands

I wasn't prepared for the special to be as good as it was. Definitely the best TV show MCU have done this year and arguably the best of the when the films are included too. Pom kills it in the role. One thing I'll never forget about the SW Holiday Special is the review someone wrote of it. Reviewer Nathan Rabin wrote, "I'm not convinced the special wasn't ultimately written and directed by a sentient bag of cocaine." So glad this could never be applied to Gunn's work, and to be honest, this is the first Christmas themed....anything, I've sat through in a very long time. Still wondering where and how Nebula got Bucky's arm though, and pleased to see Rocket actually seemed a little concerned as to how it may have become available, almost as if Rocket had grown to like and/or respect Bucky.
Karen Gillan is so damn good as Nebula. Every time she shows up she gets that bit more to do with the role, and she absolutely nails it every time. It's kinda weird now to look back at the first Guardians movie, where she's pretty much just a secondary villain behind Ronan with a grudge against Gamora, given how much she's done with the character since.
