The Sound of Silence - Disturbed - Piano Cover/tutorial

  • This video showcases my piano solo cover of "The Sound of Silence", originally composed by Paul Simon and covered by numerous artists. However, in my opinion, the Disturbed rendition is the best.
I aimed to recreate the same dark and powerful mood in my piano arrangement, which was quite challenging.
Despite a few tempo errors due to my emotive playing style, I have adjusted the tempo on my sheet music to match the official Disturbed version.

I'm very in love with this song, and the first time I heard it I nearly wanted to cry. The lyrics and the way it is sung just have such a huge impact on many. I've only been playing for eight and a half years, but I've been determined to learn this song for a while now, and finally have the guts to go for it. The nostalgia and dynamics just really contrast the song and the emotion that came across to me was very powerful. It is definitely my favorite version, and this has been my favorite played tutorial. It was very well played, beautifully performed, and feels very powerful every time I listen to this. If I'd only I'd watched it sooner ;)

To some, it might be considered easy to play, but in order to perform the contrast, dynamics, and all the emotion....There are two types of musicians in this world. Those who play heartlessly, and it sounds beautiful, but they don't play with the heart, they just play to play. The second is those who play deeply and passionately with all they have, and their body feels the music...and just by doing that, it sounds a thousand times better. I'd consider myself as the second. I'm a perfectionist, so I can't just butcher a song as beautiful as this one. It'd be a disgrace to the world and generation.

    • @Flabis-piano
      @Flabis-piano  Год назад +3

@@elliephantom6317 Indeed. For this cover, I played with my heart and tried to render the feeling and emotion that I've memorised so I didn't count the beat. It's why it's so off beat.
But I played it again a few days after, but this time respecting the original tempo and I wrote the sheet music, but it's not so beautiful and people didn't like it, so I deleted the second video. I still prefer my first version with all my mistakes.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    No one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence"

    • @Flabis-piano
      @Flabis-piano  5 месяцев назад +3

Thanks for watching and commenting. It's great that you want to start to play piano, it will be hard at the beginning but so satisfying after a few weeks, don't be discouraged to soon. This song is indeed beautiful but not recommended for beginners, it's fast, in a complicated key, with a complicated rhythm and a complicated melody. It's more for late intermediate players or advanced.
When I recorded this song, I was playing what I remembered from this song so it looks like good but it isn't apart my emotions. It contains many errors (notes and rhythms) and I don't recommend this video to learn this song. I made another tutorial based on my sheet music without mistakes, you should use that one instead if you want to try anyway. ruclips.net/video/TUdDWPDOMno/видео.html
If you like this type of tutorial instead of reading sheet music, I strongly recommend to use the app called Synthesia Game. You can buy the midi file on my website and upload it in the app. Then connect your phone, tablet or computer to your digital piano and the app will show you the same type of visualisation but more clearly, and you can start with one hand at a time , the app will wait you till you play the right note, so you don't have to press pause and rewind. The app will you show which keys to press, when and how much mistakes you made. (I'm not sponsored by this vendor) . You can try the app for free with a few integrated beginner songs. Later, you can upgrade the app for a few bucks and import any midi files.
If you like movie soundtracks, I've just published a lesson for beginners to play Time from Inception. With this lesson you will understand the basics of music and this will help you for the future. It's my last video. Just the first part is enough for beginners, the next parts are for intermediate and advanced players. All you need to know for this lesson, is where are the notes on your keyboard.
Piano and teaching is my passion, helping people even more. I'm here to help.

I agree with @Flabis-piano. I started at age 8 with one hand playing (by ear) Mary's Little Lamb, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, London Bridge, Old Mac Donald, etc. as a kid growing up in the 80s, then progressed to two hands with the song "Right Here Waiting" by Richard Marx at age 15. I was also learning easier melody-focused songs that I would hear on the radio (e.g. Open Arms by Journey). I mainly focused on the melody (what I play with my right hand), but then later began focusing more on the bass (what I now play with my left hand) portion of the piano/keyboard. Combining these elements over time and practicing daily, I began to add other songs: The Dance by Garth Brooks, Right Now by Van Halen featuring Sammy Hagar, Separate Ways by Journey, In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins, Faithfully by Journey, and many others. Now, I've added more than 100 songs like Purple Rain by Prince and the Revolution, Sound of Silence by Paul Simon (performed by Disturbed), film scores, theme music, and trance/techno/electronic dance music. Being a percussionist in my high school's marching band and learning the 13 drum rudiments helped to develop playing rhythmically with my left hand, and with improved rhythm precision for both hands. After all, without rhythm, how is it a song? A work-around that I have used when I'm struggling to nail down the chord progressions (I never learned music theory) is to listen to the bassline in the song. It makes it easier for me to learn difficult chord progressions to listen to the bass portion of the song. Of course I have dedicated a large portion of my personal life to playing by ear as what I believe is a true gift from God that I have yet to master after 4 decades of playing music. I am not a live performer and I never have been with the exception of playing snare drums in the marching band. I play music because I simply enjoy it as a hobby. I have plenty of reasons to play so I have continued to do so for over 42 years, and I'd say that my progression has greatly improved from that of my 8-year-old youth. I am not a professional, and I do not know how to read music other than for snare drums and bass drums. Although I cannot say that everyone possesses the same kind of passion that I have for playing music, I will say to you never give up, and believe in yourself. Practice 30 minutes per day. Don't cheat yourself by not practicing; you'll likely progress faster if you're truly enjoying and interested in what you're learning and accomplishing. The more you play, the more you'll learn and that will eventually become second nature to you through improved hand-eye coordination as well as increased muscle memory. Above all else, just have fun playing music, and let the best of your music playing grow each and every day that you can dedicate your time and energy to it. That last statement is something that I learned later in life, and I wish I had learned it and adopted it decades ago. Best of luck and success!

@@Flabis-piano hi, i do not agree. The singing melody ist never played on the Piano. And because you played the vocal melody, you missed some of the Piano Melodie of the original.
Without a Question you played a nice one. But i search one original without vocal melody.
I am not professionell and I do not know why almost everyone does with vocal melody.

@@Kajatan78 it’s a piano cover and I tried to render my feelings of the song. If you want only the backing track, look for a karaoke version. It’s only repetition of a simple chord progressions , nothing funny to play if you don’t sing.
Anyway, the piano part is exactly in the same key .

    Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light, I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    And no one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools", said I, "You do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
    And echoed
    In the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sound of silence
