Saints Row PS4/Pro vs Xbox One/X Tested: Can Last-Gen Consoles Cope?

- How did the last-gen versions of Saints Row turn out? After testing seven modes across the PS5 and Series X editions, here there's only a single setting per console. Curiously PS4 Pro turns in the best performance of the last-gen quartet, while Series X pushes the best image quality by running at 1440p. As for the base PS4 and Xbox One consoles? Tom investigates their fortunes.

I'm somehow not surprised that even adding a 30 fps lock was too much of a challenge for these developers.
It's surprising given the graphical fidelity and draw distance there isn't a 4K 60fps mode.
bruh, its last gen , bruh, why would devs bother, bruh, nobody cares. people will think is console's fault and upgrade to next gen and buy the game again, bruh. we win twice, yeah. - devs
@@igorrafael7429 Actually, Deep Silver decided to be consumer friendly and utilize Smart Delivery for the Xbox versions so you just buy the Xbox platform version once (physical or digital) and you get all the Xbox versions. As for the PlayStation, you're getting all the PlayStation versions when buying the digital version and you get a free upgrade to the PS5 version from the physical PS4 version. Which means don't buy the physical PS5 version if there's even a slight possibility that you need the PS4 version at some point because PS5 discs are unreadable on the PS4.

Now we just need the "this is fine" meme
“The results are interesting”
You know i honestly dont understand how many people see it as a bad thing. Now im not saying the last gen version is better than the current (ps5/ series x) but when you think about it is af if you were to compare the ps2 version of cod 3 with its ps3, wii, or 360 version. The ps2 version is indeed pretty shitty with fps, it obviously isnt graphically intensive as the other versions but you still get to play the game. Same with saints row on last gen. Now im probably gonna make a bit of people mad with this tho… honestly even though last gen isnt the best its still better than pc.. ive played on all 3. Ps4 pro, xbox one s, and pc. The pc i had which pretty much supported games like gta 5 at 1440p no problem. Saints row couldnt even run at regular 720p, even with most details and draw distance drawn down in settings it ran pretty shitty. My pc wouldnt heat up and wasnt in a clogged space so it was due to the game being poorly optimized at the time i played it. I even tried playing it at as low as 480p, still it wouldnt work fine at all. I dont know the currant optimization like state of pc as of now yet ive played it on chromebook every once in a while when away from home via geforce now and it works fine at 720p. I dont know if its due to it being cloud gaming yet it wouldnt surprise me if that was the case. Console or last gen to be honest works fine. I own a ps4 pro and a ps4 as of now. The one s was traded over for the 2 a while back. Now the one s does indeed have slight fps drops every once in a while yet it doesnt feel as slow as my base ps4. Then again i havent been able to clean the ps4 since i dont have the current necessary tools and am waiting for them to arrive via mail. The ps4 pro works fine. The only bad side of the ps4 pro is that the fan does sound loud even though the console never gets hot. It gets warm after maybe 2 or 3 hours but not hot. The fan noise is indeed a bit annoying which im planning on cleaning the console as soon as i have the tools i need arrive. Overall even though last gen isnt the best. Its not bad and i dont mean it in the sarcastic or feel sorry for me way. It honestly isnt bad. Obviously if you were to uograde ps4 pro hdd to ssd you would get a actual upgrade in load times and texture loading which people tend to leave out when doing these types of reviews on last gen versions of games. Saying a ssd would be expensive is pointless, a 1 tb ssd from samsung or pny is usually atound 70 or 80$ but if youre fien with the full on cheap route you can get one for qround 45-50$ the netac 1 tb ssd goes for around that price and installation isnt hard at all so yeah. Last gen isnt bad at all, yes it has fps drops but thats pretty much it.
This probably isn’t on DF’s radar, but I’d love to see some coverage of Destroy All Humans 2 Reprobed. It has a host of technical problems on console and PC last I checked.

The graphical performance of the series s is a big question mark too. We don't even have next gen games realeases yet still series s is underperforming quite much. You can't just blame the developers everytime. Many games like Guardians of the Galaxy, cyberpunk, dying light 2, demon slayer are running at 30 fps with meh 1080p graphics. Many 60 fps titles cannot do native 1080 but a sub 1080p with the s. These games are made keeping in mind last generation but still. Also don't forget the Xbox one back compatible games.
The series x is much better price to performance console. I have a series s and I regret buying it just so that I could buy a gaming PC when prices go down and that never happened where I live.

@KailerP have your own thoughts
I struggle to believe that Volition's current crew is so grossly incompetent that they didn't even offer a FPS lock on the last-gen machines (specifically, the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro). How much core talent did they lose after Agents of Mayhem tanked?
But, why should I be surprised at this point? What really shocked me was an interview in which they said one of their key struggles was "building the development tools at the same time they were building the game," which... what? They had a fairly solid foundation to work with regarding Saints Row: The Third Remastered. Granted, that game was buggier than the original release and barely sold (I didn't bother with it either, truth be told. Not using the Epic Store and my original runs BETTER with fewer bugs and a better Kinzie model. Why sink the cash?)... but it was a good starting point. Polish up the bugs, tweak some systems, and build a new city with those tools.
But no... they decided to start fresh and dump the old stuff, which was clearly a mistake. Gadzooks. What a trainwreck. I'm going to be cruel here: I hope Embracer Group takes the Saints Row IP and source code away from Volition's husk and gives it to a different team, which can then make remasters of Saints Row 1 and 2 (up the resolution, improve some textures, get the song licenses good to go again, add modern controller / drivers / Window support, and STOP there), do a gentler pass on 3 and 4 (dump the remastered version of 3; just too buggy), and release them as an anthology for $70. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Even Saints Row 2 didn't crash and bug out as much as Saints Row 3 remastered, i'm really not surprised with how the 'reboot' turned out.
To be honest im enjoying this game, i dont see why the hate aside from the bugs, constant crashes, bugs that prevent you from shooting or interacting with stuff forcing you to restart a mission. This is just another saints row game.
I actually curious to see how it runs on original, first base model of Xbox One, since X1S has slightly better performance than original model. Surely it could run extremely poor, but just wanna see the framerate numbers.
I would probably only be a 1-3 frame difference on average. So nothing major
The Xbox one will probably have the frame rates of the ps4 but the same resolution of the xbox one s I believe.

At least you can't say the studio is not consistent, because all platforms have atrocious optimization.
I think that having both One X and PS4 Pro with a TV with VRR feature makes the One X the best by default. And for base machines depending on your priorities, probably One S culd feel smother because of VRR.
The PS4 Pro does not support VRR. The first PlayStation to have some form of VRR support is the PS5 and it requires games to explicitly support it for VRR to work properly. This is unlike the Xbox One X and Xbox Series where the VRR works correctly with every game at the system level.
@@Tempora158 thats why I said that having a TV with VRR makes the Xbox One X the best by default...also Xbox One S and OG Xbox One also supports it.
@@ChrisAzure Right, the Xbox One S was the first to have FreeSync and HDR, and the Xbox One X followed in its footstep since they were part of the same hardware refresh. What I didn't know is Microsoft managed to backport FreeSync to the original Xbox One years after it was discontinued for the Xbox One S.
I think the reason One X has higher graphical fidelity then Series S isn't so much because of the GPU, but rather the CPU in the One X is so bad, it's limiting the frame rate allowing the GPU more time to render each frame. Hence, more graphical goodies
Also the superior memory bandwidth of One X helps to use better textures, effects and so on in some games

Had no significant issues, just a few funny physics bugs, and no crashes on PS5. Game also got me to go back and play the older titles as the whole series is up on Plus, and man I’m glad I did. I can see why fans of the series were disappointed in this one, but I do not regret my time with it and it was just dumb stupid fun. A junk food style game and we used to get more of those. Won’t win any awards, won’t push any boundaries, but I still found myself coming back. And it introduced me to a series I am loving as I’ve now finished 3, 4, and Gat Out of Hell. I get some people not really being into a game like this, or fans being let down, but the extreme level of hate, to the point people are bickering with anyone that says they enjoyed the game is kind of over the top. Appreciate the coverage as I was curious how it ran on last gen systems. Having seen the missteps by playing older titles, I do hope they get another shot at the franchise and can really nail it because it would be a shame to let the IP die. As bizarre as they were the parodies and writing in 3 and 4 were kind of awesome.

This game is just pure fun so sad that people are just part of the ignorant masses. Definitely gonna be seeing this game on underrated and hidden gems list. Best game in the series hands down.
@@vintageoriginallegit lol 😂i very much doubt that. It'll go the same way Rage 2 did. In that nobody remembers it.
Should easily hit 60fps on last gen considering how simple the game looks
There is no open world game from last gen that hits 60fps.
@@doctorsilva1345 uhhhhh metal gear sold 5
@@doctorsilva1345 Metal Gear Solid V running at 1080p/60fps on base PS4
The fact that the Series S with 1080p and Ryzen CPU not able to hit 60fps is embarrassing but I blame the unoptimized game
I would have locked the base consoles to 30fps at 720p and the Pro consoles to 1440p 30fps with an optional unlocked 1080p.
vsync on ? adaptive vsync?
Is it just me or poor Tom always gets stuck with analysis of these last gen versions?
Most of my friends rejecting this game as WOKE garbage
Yup we can finally come to a conclusion that this game was made for playstation more than xbox
I was waiting for the xbox one x vs ps4 pro to confirm that ... (Ps4 pro never outperformed one x neither in image quality nor in frames ) period.
Where've you been at? Many past games that are multiplat on PS4 Pro had better performance than on One X.
What? No fishing mechanics? It must be reel bad.
Literally this is not my business. But you guys could spend your time with more relevant games.
For a moment I thought it was CyberBUG 2077, same weird Ai, questionable graphics, non-relevant animations and so on.
not only it's one of the worst games of 2022 but it looks very bad on the base ps4, the thing i'm only having and stuck on.
not gonna bring the first party open world exclusive here since they'll obliterate this game left and right but freaking red dead redemption 2 on the base ps4 in front of this looks like a ps5 exclusive been compared to a washed out ps3 port of a game.
someone also did a comparison video of Saints Row The Third Remastered comparing it with this games and somehow the remaster looks slightly better.
I heard a lots of people mocking this game saying it looks like a last gen game and i agreed, the ps5 and XSX version looks like an early ps4/XBONE game.
while the ps4/XBONE versions do looks like a late ps3 and 360 game.
i want a comparison between VCR original xbox one vs xbox one S
do a DF Retro analysis on grand theft auto san andreas comparing it on all platforms under the sun
13:20 Pro still clowning the One X in 2022 is hilarious. It's crazy how devs STILL push resolution at the expense of fps on the One X.
Makes clear how much effort the developer put into this version. Make literally zero sense PS4Pro performing better then One X.
@@jcdenton41100 oh I see, I checked again and yep Pro runs at 1080p while one X at 2560x1440. Guess if the game had a locked 30fps option wouldn’t be that bad
Idk if you guys even watched the video or if this is just a Troll comment but the video very clearly states that the One X is running the game at 1440p while the PS4 pro is running it at 1080p with almost identical framerates. The PS4 pro having a slight frame advantage of about 2-5 frames while the one x having the resolution advantage. I can only say "if" but I think the one x would be running the game better if it also ran it at 1080p like the PS4 pro but, we'll never know.
@@tylerm5862 not trolling I watched the video and right now read the transcript version over eurogamer. I just misheard the pro resolution lmao - English isn’t even my second language have patience 🤧
@@JS2123-m9x Honestly your comment here was about the only one I wasn't even talking about. Although the developers I feel should have kept them all on equal footing. It almost seems like they wanted to target an uncapped 30fps on all machines. Its a weird one for sure.
Definitely feels like a demake
Man other than some crashes and annoying bugs I've been having a blast with this game, but hey that isn't allowed right?
