So great to see my question being chosen as the last one! I do indeed wish we had gotten a generational refresh for the PS3, as unlike the PS4 (and eventually, the PS5), we don't have backwards compatibility to brute-force old games on newer systems. While games with subpar performance on the 360 could be easily ran on a One just brute-forcing the issues, the PS3 got isolated. And Sony did release several revisions of the PS3, but none really affected performance (insomuch as better heat sinks did it)... We got the Slim and the Super Slim, after all (not to mention the first revision, which removed the PS2 backwards compatibility and the front-facing SD card slots and extra USB ports).
A new autonomous Playstation handheld is a lost cause. I mean, there is already no way that it would run PS5 titles, let alone PS6 titles, and having a less powerful hardware would hamper game development (on a whole other level than Series S). And if specific games have to be developed for the platform, that goes against everything today, where Nintendo could finally merge their handheld and TV develop teams, or like what the Steam Deck did by allowing people to play their desktop library on the go. I don't even want to discuss the possibility of a retro console only able to play PS1~PS4 titles, as it would surely not target a big enough audience to justify the R&D.
They can limit this device to PS4 games. All those old games supported 1080p. Only problem is a memory bandwidth. PS4 games was designed for 176 GB/s bandwidth which is 50% more than fastest DDR5 memory available in existing handhelds. Currently there are no memory technology that can deliver this kind of bandwidth in a handheld. GDRR6 memory use too much energy

DLSS pretty much as soon as 2.0 launched became essentially free performance - the image quality was often so close to native (sometimes worse, often better) that it was worth turning on. PSSR is not that. It's heavy and costs a lot in frame time, and has issues with low input resolutions, lots of ray tracing implementations, and sub-native post processing. It's nowhere near DLSS yet, not even DLSS 2.0. It's going to need a lot of work.
Same as dlss in the early days no? It took time to improve with sometimes glaring issues (even now) plus I believe the frame time cost is the same as pssr. All in all it’s a mixed bag for sure but for a first attempt when it’s implemented well it works as intended ie better over all than any other upscalers
Pisser has surpassed FSR as the worst upscaler by far. What a joke, if it wasn’t for the legion of Sony fanboys that keep them in business they would be in huge financial trouble but console gamers are not discerning in any way. They will enjoy their slop and thank the corporate overlords for it.
01:00:00 I would argue that the original E3 2003 Demo is one of the most impressive technology demos of all time (together with Crysis 1). I mean we can watch this materials presentation 20 YEARS ( yes freackin 20 YEARS ) later and this "Gordon Freeman Church Glas" still looks good. (I was 19 at the time). Even the water material looks good, even if it's probably just a normal map scrolling effect or some procedural effect scrolling over the water texture + normal map texture.
Didn't cyberpunk also have heavy performance dips in areas with a lot of vegetation when the PT update first launched? If I remember correctly this was fixed by dipping into the opacity micromaps feature. At least on 40 series.
I blame nvidia and their partnership with epic / unreal engine to enshittyfy pc gaming graphics with their forced TAA pipeline and bad practices to make pc gaming devolve instead of evolving, there is no reason that we reached almost peak photorealistic graphics almost 10 years ago at native 2 / 4 K to have issue with their forced pipelines that are made to sell their gpus to gimp performance on purpose while having to upscale from 720 and 1080P + framegen to get anywhere near acceptable performance. This is a well organized murder of pc gaming and pc gaming excellence by people invested in ai cloud everything.
I'd love a PS Fourtable, but Sony needs to start planning for it now * get devs to support the new hardware target now * make a dock for it that uses the PS5 slim disc drive * add Steam's ability to copy games from another PS on the same network * add Steam Input's ability to force gyro aiming in any game (and invert Y, FFS) * Vita's ability to map parts of the touchscreen to buttons (do this to the Portal too) * add API for touchscreen support to games so we can start touching menus and the keyboard, this would help the Portal too
Alex really hit a point with "PS4 games for handheld", I guess: *Most PS5 titles are Remakes, Remasters or Cross Gen games from PS4 titles of which Sony still has the PS4 code!* So I would bet, we are more looking at a handheld being able to run PS4 code in 1080p 30 fps ... which is not so difficult for current AMD silicon! This would be a similar way Microsoft could approach this with their Series S versions of so many games.
If it’s true game companies are making portable consoles they’re going to fail. This happened with motion controls-Sony and Microsoft were late to the party and offered a poor product that didn’t compete with the Wii’s established game library. Nintendo has been dominating the portable market since the DS and the Steam Deck is successful because you have access to your whole Steam library out the gate which is an INCREDIBLE deal. People interested in portable gaming already have either a Switch or a Steam Deck and are interested in upgrades for those 2 that let you keep your game library.
i dont understand why thedevs dont just cut the graphics features to whats required to lock 60...if I was able to do it on a 3060ti they should be able to do it on the ps5pro
Approaching 4K in an 8" portable could make some amount of sense: iPad mini is 2266x1488 at 8.3" today. Not that there aren't diminishing returns from our eyes only being so good.
If I remember correctly my 3080 12GB scores around 187.000 points in Geekbench. Seeing that score halfed from a Intel B580 (development version I guess) is disappointing. Sure the 3080 10/12GB is higher "endish", but it was released in 2020. If you ask me a midrange GPU should be at least somewhat be able to compete (at least get somewhat close)
I honestly think future of gaming is in cloud. It can take few years to get it where it needs to be. I just tried geforce now for stalker 2 and was quite frankly blown away how well it worked even with keyboard and mouse and how good the image quality is compared to couple of years ago.
Please don't only rely on automated benchmark. Make some human hand and eye segments part of every result. Automated benchmarking can and will hide some issues like stutter, input delay and graphical glitches. If you just look at avg framerate or the frametime distribution... You miss the real experience. Which is important to provide. especially since games are internactive and not synthetic tests. Also: visualize data in more than one dimension.
I’m actually shocked that after all the Outlaws Pro patch complaints they still released Avatar like this almost a month later. AC Mirage and The Crew have similar issues, although not to as large a degree. A big problem is we’re all going to be stuck with these versions when we move to PS6 unless they fix them. It makes it worse because they removed all other modes. You are most certainly not getting Quality Mode at 60 fps. Overall the image is cleaner than it was, but you get the fizzle, and for anyone playing at Quality Mode or the 40 fps mode, you get a mandatory visual downgrade here. And to further rub salt in the wound, these are dynamic resolution enabled games. Meaning simply doing nothing would have improved them. I’m also hesitant about a console locked upsclaer. Will these games be stuck like this. What happens when a better version of PSSR hits or if Sony abandons the tech down the line. Will devs have to go in and manually update the PSSR version for every single game? This really should allow more player control and it’s going to be a nightmare moving into PS6, on top of the downgrades everyone will be forced to receive. I have to agree that seemingly no one even turned the game on before shoving it out the door. It is absolutely wild. Either an enhancement patch is an enhancement or you don’t ship it. This seems like a water is wet moment. Ubisoft is desparately trying to get people to play these games, especially Outlaws (and Avatar just got another story expansion the same day this dropped), and this is such an avoidable PR disaster they did not need. No one is going to buy this stuff on the Pro, and no one will touch it even more on the PS6.
a PlayStation handheld that offered classic VERSIONS of games would be nice --- i don't like the changes made to Final Fantasy Twelve in the "Zodiac Age" remaster we have for modern consoles; i'd like a way to play the PS2 version without needing a PS2 or pirating the game
@@chillnspace777 i don't like the changes and updates to the art assets with Zodiac Age, the presentation is extremely uneven gameplay was also changed and rebalanced in ways that feel unfaithful to the original i don't mind difficulty modes but i want the "normal" mode to be identical to the experience of the original --- Zodiac Age's "normal" is much easier than the original game "hard" locking the player to a level 1 character is also not a solution the license system is made worse in Zodiac Age verses the original the one change i do appreciate is making the Firefly accessory (reduces experience gain to zero) available early --- the original making this a late game find is pointless

1:59:39 Im payng for extended updates with Windows 10. And when thats ended, its Linux time. W11 is just not worth it. Would be good if theres a SteamOS that could replace Windows altogether!
I don't really care for home consoles these days but I love a handheld. Of the modern ones, I've only bought a switch lite and have less than 50 hours on the console total. The form factors being so large has just completely killed my interest in buying these. Can't comfortably play on my commute or quietly at my desk at work, and it takes too much space on my desk to pick up between queues or something while playing another game. If Sony releases another overlarge portable device that I can't play the way I play my PSP and Vita, I'll be very disappointed.
Avatar is unplayable with VRR, ALLM, and 120htz on with the Pro. Turning them off makes the game playable with decent graphics at what looks like 60fps. Which is all I really wanted.
Kids these days don't even own TVs anymore to plug in a console. They save up or ask their parents for the best possible phone they can get and maybe a laptop or whatever they need for school and that's often it. They also often don't want to sit down in front of a TV or monitor to play games. Handhelds are the best possible way, besides porting to mobile, to access the younger market. It's a win-win-win situation. Older console and PC players can play on the go after being tied to the couch and desk for so long, young players can finally play all those great games the way they are used to, devs can access a broader market and if they want to access that market they have to optimize their games for weaker hardware which is also a win. Handhelds are definitely here to stay and grow now and I'm so happy about it since I love my Steam Deck.
Regarding the fact that Steam Deck is open but it is inconvenient to use other stores - most of this inconvenience comes from the fact that you have to integrate other stores with Proton somehow and game mode is more disengaged from the desktop mode that you could make it on Windows (so transitions are annoying). Hence using other stores on Windows would be less cumbersome due to those two factor not being an issue (plus Microsoft platform is unreliable and cumbersome to use in comparison to Steam, which also pushes users to other stores).
Microsoft is a small company with a $3 trillion valuation. They're doing the best they can with Windows. Cut them some slack. It's not like they could just throw money at the problems and solve them. Honestly, after seeing how well Steam streaming worked from my office computer (Win 10 / wired Ethernet / 7900X3D / 3070Ti ) to my work laptop the next room over (Zorin OS / 11th Gen i7 1180G7 / iGPU / Wi-Fi) I'm considering running Linux all of my computers aside from the 1 desktop sitting in my office. Whether I'm trying to watch a video in the living room, use the Internet, or stream a game, Windows 11 is a worse experience than Zorin. Who knew the year of Linux on the desktop wasn't an issue of Linux getting up to the bar that Windows has set for usability. It was a matter of Windows lowering the bar down to where Linux is at. Somehow, Linux has become easier and more reliable.
Avatar: The flickering is something I can live with but the water looks abysmal. To the point that I just cant ignore it. Why is noone talking about the water? The flickering is a small thing compared to the water.
About Windows 11, let me just say that running games in Linux thrugh Steam/Proton/Wine is becoming a dream compared to the nightmare of performance that Windows has became.
UE5 really is just a mess of an engine if Epic are leaving it up to developers to fix their own screw ups. Don't they have enough Fortnite money to do it themselves?
Going to go out on a limb here and say that rich is wrong about the PlayStation handheld not being able to run PS5 games. The handheld is a couple of years out, likely right before the newest consoles release (2027-28 or so). I think it's quite the opposite, the PS handheld WILL play PS5 games, albeit scaled way down, similar to Xbox Series S. Probably 800p / 30 FPS. It's entirely feasible and that's my guess as to what is going to actually happen.
I’ve been using handhelds since the gameboy/game gear days. Honestly, the ps portal is perfect for it’s handling and size for me. 3DS’ always felt a bit small, even the XL’s. The PSP was beautiful but that analogue nub wasn’t the best. The vita and switch were great, but the sticks were too small for games like FPS’. I have an ROG ally and that is close to perfect, but the portal with it’s full controller size and near 1:1 sticks to the normal controller just feel great in my hand

maybe a bit exaggerated? The frametime cost is not unreasonable
@@richardtucker5938it's not unacceptable, but it's heavier than fsr, which, at least in it's more recent iterations, is already heavier than dlss.
You missremembered. Dlss became really good around dlss 2.4. Before that there were many problems especially at 1080p.
Half life 2 is 20 years old, at this point we are getting GTA 6 before Half Life 3
All I want is Console Quality HDR on PC.
This 😂
01:00:00 I would argue that the original E3 2003 Demo is one of the most impressive technology demos of all time (together with Crysis 1).
Ive decided on not getting a Pro thanks to DF. Why? A lot of their videos have games with “issues on PS5 Pro”
Didn't cyberpunk also have heavy performance dips in areas with a lot of vegetation when the PT update first launched? If I remember correctly this was fixed by dipping into the opacity micromaps feature. At least on 40 series.
Yes - and that is currently not in use in Outlaws sadly
WINDOWS 10 IS GOING TO EXP NEXT YEAR AND WE ARE STUCK WITH WINDOWS 11 HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA
DF DIRECT WEEKLY. EVER WEEK, WEEKLY.
A lot of current Windows perf issues are also down to ever more intrusive AV software needing to get its hooks into absolutely everything.
2:01:15 I was getting a memory write error on my 7800X3D at shutdown every time a few weeks ago but it has stopped now lol, maybe 24H2 fixed it...
Hahaha. What is wrong with QC for these pro patches?! Geez, Ubisoft.
Thanks for answering my question, everyone!
I'd love a PS Fourtable, but Sony needs to start planning for it now
* get devs to support the new hardware target now
* make a dock for it that uses the PS5 slim disc drive
* add Steam's ability to copy games from another PS on the same network
* add Steam Input's ability to force gyro aiming in any game (and invert Y, FFS)
* Vita's ability to map parts of the touchscreen to buttons (do this to the Portal too)
* add API for touchscreen support to games so we can start touching menus and the keyboard, this would help the Portal too
Brazil pixel's work is so interesting. It should make internal resolution benchmarkable, not only hand countable.
I too get the X3D shutdown error lol
Hopefully the next Xbox allows to install desktop apps, so it has better "backwards compatibility" than Playstation and Nintendo
hire brazil pixel
Alex really hit a point with "PS4 games for handheld", I guess:
*Most PS5 titles are Remakes, Remasters or Cross Gen games from PS4 titles of which Sony still has the PS4 code!*
So I would bet, we are more looking at a handheld being able to run PS4 code in 1080p 30 fps ... which is not so difficult for current AMD silicon!
This would be a similar way Microsoft could approach this with their Series S versions of so many games.
50:00 Let's wait and see if Sony feels offended by this. I mean you can be inspirated, but the design language screams Forbidden West in detail.
It will play PS5 games 10 years after PS5 was a thing
Sony is a HARDWARE company.
Ubisoft taking away the options is even the biggest insult.
Glad i built a 4080s gaming pc last month instead of wasting money on PS5 PRO.
👍
Will Sony allow them to?
PSSR sucks, bring back FSR it's way better, another nail in the PS5 Pro.
No wonder valve stuck with linux for steam deck instead of windows 11😂😂
1:23:58 ASMR Alex
Windows Explorer hanging because of a sleeping external hard drive has been an issue for at least decade.
a PlayStation handheld that offered classic VERSIONS of games would be nice --- i don't like the changes made to Final Fantasy Twelve in the "Zodiac Age" remaster we have for modern consoles; i'd like a way to play the PS2 version without needing a PS2 or pirating the game
Wait, what changed between the original version of 12?
@@chillnspace777
i don't like the changes and updates to the art assets with Zodiac Age, the presentation is extremely uneven
gameplay was also changed and rebalanced in ways that feel unfaithful to the original
i don't mind difficulty modes but i want the "normal" mode to be identical to the experience of the original --- Zodiac Age's "normal" is much easier than the original game
"hard" locking the player to a level 1 character is also not a solution
the license system is made worse in Zodiac Age verses the original
the one change i do appreciate is making the Firefly accessory (reduces experience gain to zero) available early --- the original making this a late game find is pointless
love my handhelds, love my switch. Not falling for the new sony portable because they aren't gonna support it. If it's just, downgraded PS5 games, I'll stick to PS5.
Intel can also produce their cards inside the US to avoid tariffs if they are introduced...
1:59:39 Im payng for extended updates with Windows 10. And when thats ended, its Linux time. W11 is just not worth it. Would be good if theres a SteamOS that could replace Windows altogether!
John brings the boom… that’s what he do.
Finaly reacting to the half life 2 doc
I don't really care for home consoles these days but I love a handheld. Of the modern ones, I've only bought a switch lite and have less than 50 hours on the console total. The form factors being so large has just completely killed my interest in buying these. Can't comfortably play on my commute or quietly at my desk at work, and it takes too much space on my desk to pick up between queues or something while playing another game.
If Sony releases another overlarge portable device that I can't play the way I play my PSP and Vita, I'll be very disappointed.
This!!!
Switch is a huge unergonimic slab.
The Vita was just perfect
They need a handheld that has a screen that can roll up like a dense scroll. A screen that you could expand would be revolutionary for handhelds lol.
Avatar is unplayable with VRR, ALLM, and 120htz on with the Pro. Turning them off makes the game playable with decent graphics at what looks like 60fps. Which is all I really wanted.
200 episodes soon, how is this possible?!
Thank God, they got the chapters correctly this week!
What are you even talking about?
That error at shutdow also occurs to me 😂 and it will only if u have connected controller to pc in your session 😂😂😂
That Brazil Pixel analyser looks super interesting! You should make a video about that!
But Windows already has a shortcut for HDR toggle, John - Win+Alt+B. Though, one button is faster, of course :)
I'd love to see a DF Linux challenge (but focused on Gaming and general desktop use impressions), like LTT did a few years back
I second that.
So Sony are using owners of PS5 Pro to train the PSSR model, rather than doing that inhouse like Nvidia?
