Making a freehand Oom Paul Pipe

- The weekend build was fun and challenging project. I made a freehand Oom Paul style full bent pipe. The pipe is made from a piece of cherry wood. The stem is acrylic. The guy I made this for wanted a lighter finished wood so I decided to go with a natural buffed finish. The wood was sanded to 220 then buffed and finished with carnuba wax. Please consider subscribing. I want to start releasing content as much as I can.
Tools used:
Jet 12" chop saw
Rikon 10" bandsaw
Stanley Bailey No 4 plane
Home Made spoon bit (check out my other video on grinding this bit)
Aircraft Extension drill bits
1 hp arbor with 40 grit sanding disc
Taig Micro Lathe with Beal collet chuck
Ryobi 4x36 bench sander
Jet Mini-lathe
Beal Buffing system
Very Nice Work 👌
Классно 👍👍👍
Thanks for not adding an outlandish colored stem nor a light colored stem.
Light colored stems show tobacco stains and bite marks. Dark colors hide them.
Outlandish colors prevent many customers, especially traditional pipes smokers, from purchasing a pipe.
Crazy bowl designs also prevent many sales.
In my opinion, at your age, if you are serious about selling pipes, traditional bents and straights will be your best sellers.
I wished I had the scratch to buy huge pieces of briar

It was great, and while it was short, it was full of important points, and I use them ️🙏🏻♥️👌👑🎷

beautiful craftsmanship

Well done

Could you build this without a lathe
yes you absolutely could, the lathe comes in handy getting the initial shape of the stem and making sure the airway in the stem is centered. but it could be done with just a drill press and shaping the stem with a sander.
Hey nice build !!
What's the stem material btw ?
The stem is a black acrylic, typically used for pen turning. I've found they work well for stems.
@@WeekendBuilds alright thanks 👍
Beautiful work, greetings from Perú.
Are you from South-Africa
Sorry Pieter, I'm not, I'm located in the USA
Nice job sir
Do You Sell Any and what wood was used?
I have sold a few, but not many, Its more of a hobby for me, the wood was cherry
Hands were definitely used.
Beautiful pipe. Nicely done.
some not work , you have continuity problem from shank to mouthpiece....
That's a good pipe
( marcus . Greer )
Great work 👍
great start, but its not finish. wait till he does the carving.
👍👍👍👍👍все логично,изделие,должно быть практичным и тем не менее,изящным,но не расфуфыренным👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Very cool. Oom Paul is my favorite style. I couldn't catch it in the video, how did you get the stem hole and the bowl to intersect? From the angle of the design it looks like they wouldn't meet up?
Thanks Dan, the to get the stem to connect you drill a shallow hole for the tenon, I used a 5/16" tenon on the stem. Once the shallow hole is drilled, you can get a smaller bit at an even steeper angle in to connect the bowl and stem. For that I use a 5/32" aircraft extension bit.
Ahhh..got it! I was thinking in curves and not hard angles. Simple and effective..the best techniques always are. 👍
@@lew9462 yeah, full bent pipes are very tricky to get your head wrapped around. I think I drew 8 or 10 different versions and it still came out slightly different. I think the key is do all the drilling with everything still square and marking everything on the outside. At least that helps me.
Amazing! This was so cool to watch!
@@DIYAlex Thanks!!
