Hoboken Detective Catches a MAN Stealing Makeup from CVS

- Around 10:35 PM on March 12, 2024, Detective Michael Losurdo with the Hoboken Police Department entered the CVS on 59 Washington Street. As he entered, he observed a suspect placing products from the makeup aisle into an oversize coat. He immediately made contact with the shoplifting suspect and asked him to empty his pockets. The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Joseph Burigo, and Detective Losurdo informed him that he was under arrest for shoplifting.
Within a few minutes, Officers Daniel Barron and Daniel Grossi arrived on scene to assist. He was handcuffed, searched, and escorted to the patrol car. Detective Losurdo had a store associate scan the items that he had retrieved, and he initially estimated that the total value of stolen items was $269.40.
Officers Barron and Grossi transported Joseph to the Hoboken Police Department for further processing. At police HQ, he was searched in more detail and they found additional makeup products on his person. The total value of stolen items was determined to be $289.65. Detective Losurdo finger printed and photographed him. Joseph was subsequently charged with shoplifting (2C:20-11B(2)) and released with a summons pending his court appearance in the Hudson County Superior Court on April 3, 2024.

The New Jersey Supreme Court has previously affirmed in Salzano v. The summary of events was based on records that are “open to public view through open access to public records” as defined in the Salzano case. In Ramos v. Flowers, 429 N.J. Super. 13, the Appellate Division of the Superior Court has also affirmed the right to film law enforcement interactions.

Purposefully Taking Merchandise
*** Concealment of Merchandise
Altering or Transferring a Price Tag
Transferring Merchandise to Another Container
Under-Ringing of Merchandise
This means that in any of these five scenarios, whether you walk out of the store with merchandise or not, you can be charged with and convicted of shoplifting.

I'm retired, but work in a NJ retail store a few hrs. a week . I saw a kid stuffing his backpack, so I called my 'manager' on the walkie. He said there was nothing he could do!! I got a little closer to the kid and just stared at him. He ran out the exit. The manager came out from the safety of his office and YELLED AT ME for not following corporate procedure. 'Corporate' is LAME!

Then you have a dead employee and his family winning a lawsuit against the store. The news reads “Cashier killed after confronting shoplifter for $3 item”.
