Shoplifter With No Priors Arrested for Stealing $230 Worth from Hoboken ShopRite

- Around 3:19 PM on March 7, 2024, Officer Dylan Archilla with the Hoboken Police Department responded to a report of a shoplifting at ShopRite on 900 Madison Street. He entered the store around 3:20 PM and he walked upstairs to the loss prevention office. In the loss prevention office, he met with the loss prevention officer as well as the alleged shoplifter, who was identified as 35-year-old Jossy.
The loss prevention officer informed Officer Archilla that he saw the woman place 2 packs of men’s t-shirts in a non-ShopRite bag. He returned to the loss prevention office and watched on camera as she attempted to leave without paying for $230.39 worth of items. Officer Damian Bates eventually arrived on scene as backup. After asking Jossy why she would want to steal because she was being recorded on camera, Officer Archilla placed Jossy under arrest for shoplifting. She was handcuffed and escorted to the patrol car.
The officers loaded the items he had paid for into a police car and Jossy was transported to the Hoboken Police Department for further processing. At police HQ, she was searched in more detail by Officer Shelby Seickendick. Jossy was found to have no outstanding warrants or prior criminal history. She was subsequently charged with shoplifting under 2C:20-11B(2) and released pending her court appearance.

The fact that once they are caught, they say, "Can I pay for it, or I have the money to pay for it tells u where their values are at, and its not good. If u have enough money for it in the first place, why steal it? Why? There's not staving going on u just don't want to pay for it. My God, and it causes prices to go up and up and up. It has an impact on many and us on SSI. It really hurts us. We get paid once a month, and what we get is it, no getting a 6 . I live on 1059.00 a month. My rent takes nearly half of that, and there is power, insurance, phone, and food. Guess what? That doesn't go very far many things I just can't get things like my favorite shampoo. Wow, such a luxury. Sometimes, I just am so frustrated, but I'm not going to steal . What kind of person would I be. It's hard to go without, but I wouldn't sacrifice my honesty for something I can't pay for.

it is a busy store. they hired an armed security guard several years ago and appartently he is effective. he hovers around the self check out area and watches people. i guess shoprite was losing too much money.

I mean...What's the sense of keeping someone locked up over $200 worth of food? They'll set a court date, she'll probably be given a fine. The worst aspect for her is she now has a criminal record so it will be tough for her to get a job, which may lead to her stealing again, sadly. There's more pressing crimes to be locked up for than $200. Not all crimes should be treated like murder.

The shoplifters get caught and arrested, but then the judges go light on them so they think they can continue doing it without consequence. In the end, law, abiding citizens pay higher prices for everything because of criminals. 😡

Just watched a video this morning on another channelof shoplifters at this same store😂 Too funny (not that people are shoplifting but that they happened in the same store and were uploaded by 2 diff channels on same day). The other shoplifters were foreign exchange students. I thought this little room looked familiar with the yellow cups on the table. That loss prevention guy is on it with his job! 😂 Maybe the word will get around not to steal from the Hoboken Shoprite😬

Why are they transporting her groceries? If she bought those with any public assistance than tough shit, donate them to a shelter or food pantry. And ensure she is trespassed from these stores so she cannot go in a do this again. You steal and get caught you suffer the consequences.

They should just refund the groceries she did buy back to her card. Why make the cops lug all her paid for groceries to the station? Just simply put the money back on card and put the groceries back into the store. I worked for ShopRite and there are plenty of “return” people to put those things back.

I hate shoplifters, but even more, I despise the politicians that have created these problems and let these criminals abuse the system.
There are countless federal, state, and local programs that can feed someone or give them benefits so there's literally no excuse. That said, when I was a cashier, lot of EBT people were buying snacks and fitness drinks instead of actual good food.
