I do like using Strava segments to help gauge progress over time. But if someone is using it to hit times or KOMs I'd still be mindful of traffic. Not hitting a car or a person is better than not hitting a KOM for that one day. I think the danger comes when people are wreckless with it. But that could be the case doing intervals on the road or chasing faster average speeds too. Best to just be mindful and careful while doing so if you do and find safe places and times to do so.

I have a segment nearby with two traffic lights on it. And on a good day with a tail wind, I can be very tempted to run a red light to go for the KOM.

And that’s why segments shouldn’t run through junctions, roundabouts, and traffic lights!

This might be controversial but from the court case, the pedestrian stepped out with no notice which caused the unfortunate death. If the pedestrian was driving a car and pulled out with no notice, the cyclist would have died. This isn't a Strava issue in my opinion. Strava has the facility for flagging dangerous segments if deemed too dangerous i.e. Segments that go through junctions/roundabouts etc. I think in this very tragic case the media is looking for someone to blame. As the person to blame has unfortunately died there is a necessity to find another scapegoat. The life of cyclist involved in the incident will never be the same again presumably. Strava segments are one of their USPs and bring a lot to cycling. I would hate to see them disappear

I mountain bike, I have a downhill segment I ride, trying to beat my pb is dangerous to me.

I'm glad you brought up that cyclists can make the roads better for folks who do need roads. If I ride, I don't need a big parking space at my destination - more space for a car user who has mobility trouble but not enough for a handicap spot, so they can park closer to the location. I emit less icky fumes - better air for the asthmatic people. I don't clog up the highways - the roads aren't as trafficky. I'm less noisy - folks with tinnitus don't wince as I go by, and the ambient sound is better for all. I arrive hungry - the tiny cafes get my business.
Do wish I could say that most motorists were decent, like you did. I'm in SoCal, commuting right next to cars, with runners in the bike lane (they have a separate sidewalk). All the bad stereotypes about SoCal drivers are true - they're rude, impatient, don't pay attention. The runners try to push me into the cars. I miss being in a better place for riding. SoCal is ass.

I am lucky to live not far from Minet Park (West London) It is one mile cycle track and it is free.

Riding on a track is almost as dull as on a trainer. I'd quit riding if I had to resort to that.

It really depends on the area. I live near a park that has mixed-use hiking/mtb trails and it's incredibly frustrating dealing with mountain bike riders flying through with absolutely no regard for the hikers (of which I often am), and sometimes they will even yell out "STRAVA!" as if we're all supposed to care and bend to their whims. The same area has multi-use (paved) paths that face the same problems, cyclists will weave through very dangerously going 20+ mph. On the roads it's much less of a problem.

You missed the bit about the fact they were racing. I think Strava is responsible for some cyclists riding dangerously and jumping lights.

Have to agree that Strava can incentivise riders to take risks. I know plenty of riders that take extreme risks.

Cycling at 29miles an hour (47kph) on any urban road is dangerous, let alone on a road with 20mph speed limit. The death of the woman clearly showed it is dangerous.

The stratford Olympic park is a disgrace. Built with public money then given over to private companies. I rarely see anyone using the outdoor track, such a waste of space
Running tracks are similar in London too all behind pay walls when they used to be free access. In other cities and countries there's far more access

So in Germany there may be another reason why the apps will have to delete the routes. In Germany, there will be a revision of the Federal Forest Act of 1975. Previously, all 16 federal states had their own, but this is now to be centralised. This is because the first-time recording of digital routes by navigation apps could then no longer be permitted. More specifically, the draft law would stipulate that the ban on recording could affect routes through areas that have so far been unmarked. Cyclists would therefore need authorisation from forest owners and the authorities to record routes.

I think if road cyclists made some effort towards skills on a bike there would be less accidents, they're going way too fast for their skill level, you've got buying the most efficient and easiest to pedal bike sorted, now work on your skills, there's a reason you get owned every time someone from another category shows you what good bike control looks like.

I challenge you to film cyclists on Bournemouth beach. Its a shared space with pedestrians, dog walkers etc. Your filming on any given day will show cyclists taking excessive risks. Strava encourages speed without regard for safety. Any equivalent app for drivers would be instantly banned. It's fine off road and during closed road events but on open roads or on shared parhs its encouraging the wrong behaviours.

    • @bloodycrepe
      @bloodycrepe 2 месяца назад

How about we hold bad cyclists accountable for risky behavior rather than an inanimate object for once?
