3/4 bibs massively underrated, especially for us older riders with arthritic knees.
They are my favorite and go to bibs in my winter area! I keep looking for sales because they're so useful during spring.
Especially non-insulated
Yep the compression given by them do wonders for me. I wear compressionq tights for all gym workouts I wear 3/4 bibs deep in the summer.
I found sort leg warmers more handy to use - I can just decide last second if I want them or not.
Lusso 3/4 are great
Any rain jacket for any activity needs vents - that's the only way to release excess of heat and sweat (even shake-dry)
DWR isn't marketing. For a WP/BR to be both at the same time you need the beading, once a material wets out (ie the face fabric is soaked) it can't breathe because water can't pass through water, just adds to it obviously. With beading some areas breathe and some don't which is better than 0 breathing. Abrasion rubs DWR off, if you have a non-shakedry hiking jacket you'll notice it wets out more quickly under the shoulder straps for example but reapplying isn't hard and only needs doing a couple of times a year with normal use. Shakedry has no face fabric so is less abrasion resistant, I know in V1 they said don't wear a backpack but not sure about newer stuff.
Experiencing this in both the cycling and hiking worlds, I've found that waterproof clothing is only breathable if you control your effort enough to minimize sweating.
High-end clothing is definitely breathable. But keep in mind:
- If the clothing is impermeable enough to keep the rain 100% out, then it's impermeable enough to let out the high volume of moisture vapor you create with your increased effort.
- If it's permeable enough to let out the moisture vapor you create with high-exertion sweat, then it's necessarily permeable enough to let some rain in.
There's a saying I've heard in hiking regarding waterproof clothing: "You are going to get wet - it will either be from the rain or your sweat."
Oakley Blades*** is what you were referring to. I was a BMX racer when those came out years ago and had a few pairs…
I am a fair weather rider. I don't ride when it rains or snows, plus I don't ride under 50*F temps so bib shorts, s/s jerseys, and vests are all I need. Anything under 50*, raining, snowing, etc I just get on zwift.
I'm with those who think that huge sunglasses look ridiculous. I have a pair of Oakley Radar Path EVs and those are really sharp. I can wear them on the bike, off the bike, running or whatever. They don't look like I should be on the slopes snow skiing.
Being short I wear 3/4 bibs in the winter with long compression sock underneath. Look like I've got long tights on
Another cool vid with more insights...
.
A suggestion for the next vid....
Fidlock items. Underated/overated?
knee warmers, essentials - and compact (you can remove them easily mid-ride and stash in your pocket), last winter I used them all the time (especially mornings/evenings, I think I didn't use long tights at all)
Hi viz for daytime. Reflective for night time. Simple
I wear a pair of Roka Oslo glasses when running or cycling - look like normal glasses but very lightweight and stick to your face brilliantly.
With regard to Gore-Tex...it is breathable or waterproof. Science says it can't be both at the same time but clever marketing labels use "and".
FortNine (biggest motorbike RUclips channel) did a short video on this exact topic a few weeks ago.
good thing rain isnt full submersion. the underside and other areas wont be covered in water when it rains, so it will breathe in those areas. certainly is better than a plastic bag for that reason
You can buy professional sunglasses which are norma size and design. Ekoi.
My first pressure relief saddle was a Selle SanMarco short-nosed saddle, but the way the edges of the covering was finished wasn't neatly tucked in on the edges and it cost me a couple of pairs of bib shorts by wearing through the fabric on the inside of both thighs. I then went to a Fizik pressure relief saddle that was better finished and have no unusual wear spots on any of my kit after 16k kilometers in the past year.
i dont get how soft tissue squeezing and moving around a hole in the saddle is supposed to be comfortable. it also puts more pressure else where. sit on your saddle and poke your gooch from underneath the saddle.
So the explanation of gore material: yes, the water proof properties are coming from the material, but also from the coating. While the jacket will keep you dry from the outside, to get rid of (a bit of) humidity from the inside, while it rains, the coating needs to work. Otherwise the outer fabric will get soaked in water and consequently prevent any water transport from the inside to the outside. In any case its all physics. If the humidity is high overall eg, you cant expect the jacket will magically make the sweat disapear(because the air is already saturated with water).
I'm very percieving to saddles and positioning, and I've now tried the SLR BOOST and it's awesome for me.
Also yeah Shakedry is awesome, to bad it isn't made anymore (I bought 2 when I knew it was going away)!
I believe it's only with Shakedry jackets they don't recommend wearing a rucksack. Also I think Shakedry jackets don't have a DWR coating it's the actual material that waterproof so doesn;t require it. Thats' what's appealing about them despite the cost is that it will always be waterproof countless washes later with no special treatment.
They don’t recommend wearing a bag because the material isn’t that durable and can make holes,
As a waterproof jacket there amazing, I’ve got one and had it for several years and have used it for thousands of miles and I haven’t found a jacket as good
woke up one morning and couldnt walk due to tendonitis in both of my achillies. i was doing 400-500 miles per week for training peak. went to the drs and he told me all people have a shorter leg than the other. lowered my saddle and it worked out since. the dr pointed out how you can see it in the wear of people shoes.
My rain jacket lets sweat out by letting it run down your arms :(
I have one pair of 3/4 length tights. I hate them and only ever wear them when all my full-length ones are in the wash, with my Spatz overshoes that cover the gap.
Jimmi should definitely be on the next bikepacking trip!
By the way, your pronunciation of "Bendigo" is hilarious!
Haha... My missus was born in Benders. As soon as we heard it, we had a good laugh! I used to work for a UK bank. When we opened an a/c in the UK with them, they spelt it Bendi Go!
Can you reference what episode is this on your wild ones podcast?
Shakedry is not on offer anymore (at least in Europe). Would be very interesting to see what you think about the successor materials.
Hi @Cade Media, big fan and from Kenya. We'd love to show you around as we are cyclists as well
Really enjoy your show but can you please sort out Emily's mic audio cord, it looks like it is stretched to the max and barely reaches unlike the other two which are routed nicely. Just my ocd kicking in. oty.
Snacks for a ride. Chocolate deffo a melting liability. Try kid's lunchbox fruit smoothie pouches. Cheaper than gels with prob as much carbs, tasty and cheap. Bonus, often easily resealable if you don't want all of it in one go.
South African here - bike theft and attacks are a big issue
I seem to be super sensitive to saddles, I've tried loads, mostly with cut outs. Previous favourite was a Fizik Argo but have now swapped to an SQ Lab 611 15cm, (the 612 looks similar but not as comfy as 611) Its only now that I can try to do my 1st century ride as I've never been able to sit long enough to ride that long before 🙂
Me too. Saddle sore hits me different, I feel like my body is just difficult
@@xaviernogueira As I said, I was signed up for my 1st Century ride, I completed it on Sunday, The Dragon Ride in Wales. I was using the SQ Lab 611 and didn't suffer at all, mebee give one a try ?? . . . Good luck !
I live is scotland weather is changeable as fuck, I own every kinda legwear you guys mentioned but any kinda leg warmers over ever used move at least a little and it is very annoying good for a commuter situation but not riding imo
Your skin does it
Tenerife, technically not in the southern hemisphere 😂 not wrong!
Acabo de comprar ese sillín de bicicleta fizik de la imagen. Me encanta
It’s not recommended by gore (company) to wear a backpack over a shakedry jacket.
Jimmy and Francis …. New Zealand………❤
Cleat shims….but it’s like wacko mo…if you fatigue your body too much,, something pops up
Emily, You are absolutely right with regard to huge cycling sunglasses looking ridiculous. Even if they become ‘fashionable’, they will still look ridiculous. Functional? Perhaps. Good looking? No.
Pogacar won in leg warmers in Giro
I'm a 3/4 tights fan.
Quick costume change at 5:45?
Goretex Shakedry is dead. They only sell in stock items. They cant manufacture it anymore. Unfortunately.
I would love to know if there are Sunglasses for riding which fit over my normal glasses.
BTW, chocolate bars match are a perfect match for a coffee.
Best wishes from Switzerland.
A person I sometimes ride with have a pair of glasses that go over his normal specs
@@xfg007does he use some "normal" brand or is it specific?
@@kevinblankenburg4816 They're called fitover cycling glasses
@@kevinblankenburg4816 The type of glasses is called "fitover", I don't know the brand but there are probably multiple.
Hi viz yellow is massively underrated. Gotta match it well though with non yellow kit.
Hi viz pink is more high viz - opposite end of the colour spectrum to light green
Proviz gilet for night time winter riding is definitely overrated in my opinion!
Overra’ed or underra’ed
Here in Canada, we see more and more pro baseball players wearing cycling glasses. They provide a wider, taller field of view...
Like Kenny Powers??
@@RockyScorcese Dunno abut Kenny. I'm a Jays fan...
big sunnies look ridiculus ! and also they touch my helmet all the time and press my nose, they try to protect my forehead?? wtf...
and I have to remove them almost on every climb (even in winter), coz it's TOO HOT with them !!
Also….. just come to Australia and ride on the east coast. Nullarbor is boring to drive let alone ride
I had the saddle in the thumbnail and it's awful for me, dug into my hamstrings and caused pain
😪
Vortex is way over priced. base layer is everything. If it's really wet out you will get wet. cause of the garment design and your activity, wind...
May I ask. Are Jimmi and Emily a couple as in boyfriend and girlfriend?
All hi-vis is MASSIVLY over rated. It only works when drivers are looking.
And when drivers are looking, it's not needed.
