  • Trying to figure out when to harvest your garlic? Or do you want to cure your garlic but don't have the ideal location? That's ok! I don't either and this is how I cure mine and get it to last the entire year:)

That’s a nice garlic harvest! Mine lasts all year too! I do eat the Rocombole group garlic first (Spanish Roja) as it stores the shortest but tastes the best! I hang mine in burlap garlic bags in the basement. You really do show that you don’t need perfect storage conditions!

So glad you had a good harvest. I am glad to show people that you don’t always have to provide the perfect conditions. It is paralyzing when you try to do everything “right” or by the book:) The spanish Roma sounds very interesting. I may have to look into that for next year:)

Softneck garlic doesn’t survive my winter conditions for a fall planting crop (northern New England, down to -20F and freezes on average from Oct 1 to May 10), but I’ve heard from other local gardeners that they will plant some out in early spring before the last frost date when it can still get chill hours but not the bitter cold the hard neck can experience. So winter hardiness is something to consider, not just if it does or doesn’t produce scapes. Great video for the timeline!

That is good to know. Thank you for commenting on that. I learn something new everyday! It is crazy that any plant can survive -20!

Great video! I love how you bundled them and hung them on your seed starting shelves. I'm definitely steeling that idea!

Garlic is so easy and wonderful. My 16 yo says he is going to be a garlic farmer, lol. We still haven't pulled ours, zone 5a, WI, but soon! We grow hard neck so those scapes are just an awesome second crop.

My 14 y.o. called our garlic “sour dirt balls.” Little does he know that I put garlic in everything he eats😂 Glad to hear your son enjoys it and wants to farm! Of my 4 kids, only one says that they want to garden. I think the others will come around!

My mother gave this variety to me about 3 years ago and she cannot remember the name. All I know is that it was a local variety that she bought in Maine. So sorry I’m not more help.

Great info! I’m going to give garlic a go this fall. Any suggestions for varieties that do well in our area?

I wish I could tell you varieties, but I have no idea. My mother gave me this seed garlic 3 years ago. All I know is that she bought it at a market in Maine and that it is hardneck. Sorry I can’t be more help.

My entire bed of softneck garlic was infested with allium leaf miner pupae when I pulled them this year. I was not expecting pest damage like that! Thankfully my hardneck in a different bed are fine. I’m in Pennsylvania zone 6b.

How often do you water your garlic ? Long crops are nerve racking to new Gardeners

I don’t water at all in the cold season. When we hit late May, early June, I use drip irrigation 20 minutes every other day. ( Before I had irrigation, I never watered it. Whatever rain we had is what it got and it still did very well)
