I have been an umpire in state level games when a fast ball that was never touched by glove or bat smacked me flat into the mask right between the eyes. Knocked the mask clean off my head behind me. What saved me from feeling it was the fact that i dont have the mask too tightly on my head (to better be able to remove it for fly balls) and so the ball's speed was deflected upwards along with the movement of the mask. The pain is DAMNED painful when it hits your arm, wrist, hand, box (between your legs) and the absolute damned WORST is when it hits you right on the centre of your foot square on. No matter how much protection you have, you can STILL get hurt.
My favorite part of these is how much the players care and worry for the Ump's. Obviously players and Ump's have their issues but when it comes down to it these guys do worry for each other. Love this sport.

I really love how players can appear to hate some umpires during a heated game when arguing calls etc.. But they show so much concern and respect when they are injured.
It makes me feel good that most of the players immediately check to see if the ump is alright. Especially when they stay with them until medical arrives. It shows a mutual respect between players and umps.
The unluckiest one was the one who died at a Reds game about 20 years ago. Anyone remember that? He wasn't hit by any pitches, he had a heart attack or something. I remember they postponed the game, and Marge Schott had a hissy fit.

I've had many people ask if we can even feel the impact because of the equipment we wear... the answer is "Hell, YES!" There is still a lot of exposed area's of the body, and we rely heavily on the catchers set up for protection. Foul tips are uncontrollable, but when the pitcher crosses up the catcher and they totally whiff, those 80-90 mph balls hurt like hell. The direct impact is blunted, and spread over a very small surface area. While the gear saves us from serious injury and death, the pain is very real. I have been knocked out of both men's and woman's games at most every level. Even a 10U girls softball game once...those are the worst. Some of those little girls can really wing it, and the catchers ability isn't usually up to par.
The pitches that got straight through or were very slightly misdirected looked the worst. Imagine getting hit with an 85 mph bullet like that. Great collection BronxBomber. Thank you!

The teacher didn't see this, so when I go up to bat I hit the ball and then toss the bat to the side and get in trouble for it.
I have to admit that i chuckled a few times, just because it's crazy. Feel bad for the umpires. Kinda surprised they are not wearing shin pads like the catchers, or have some kind of shield they can hold, especially when the catcher is no longer lined up in front of them.
Purple Hearts are awarded for wounds, Silver & Bronze Stars for bravery and various awards for excellence. These guys ought to get something. Maybe gold & silver plated face masks. Titanium jock strap cups. A 95 MPH fast ball in wherever! I hope they at least get paid well.

It was pretty hot that day so we figured it was just that effecting him. In the 6th or the 7th he took a knee while i was pitching then shortly after fell over. Had a heart attack right there and died on the field. Truly a horrible day for everyone there and a dark spot on my playing days.

I was in a travel softball game last year and a foul ball from another field came into our field and hit the home plate umpire on the top of the head. Scary moment whenever anyone in this game gets hit

Damn, these umpires are tanks. Baseballs are hard as rocks and professional pitchers throw almost 100 miles per hour.
