I had an experience at a baseball game, where a bat flew out of the batter’s hand, and got caught in the net. Take note, the player didn’t care, he just walked back to the dugout. A kid, about eleven or twelve, went to get it. He climbed onto the top of the dugout and reached for it, but he couldn’t reach it, so a man climbs up with him and picks him up to help him reach it. They get it, but an official comes and takes it away from him! The man was outraged and the kid plain sad. Everyone was booing, and they didn’t give the bat back to the kid.
The bat is property of the player and is always retrieved from the stands. Usually they would be given a signed bat in return(they have bats they use in batting practice and not the actual game). The bats are custom made for each player and cost a lot of money. As for the player not caring, it is for a grounds crew person to get the bat. You do not want a player that makes a couple of mill a year to get hurt doing stuff like that.
I can't imagine they're that expensive, after all, bats breaking isn't uncommon. And they're mlb players making umpteezillion dollars a year. They can afford a bat.

The team usually buys the bats for the player depending on the contracts so the bats technically belong to the club but anywho players do get attached to their bats especially during hitting streaks, players tend to be superstitious. Again it is personal property of the players/teams so any bat that goes into the stands is retrieved regardless of what we may think or feel what others should do with their property.
