We try to take care of each other back there. That's why when the catcher takes a hit we will walk the ball out to the pitcher. Then we make sure the catcher is good before we restart the game. Having a good catcher makes a game so much better.
Both are harder to use. The pillow cushion is awkward and if you drop your hands, you expose your collarbone and throat. The hockey helmet is harder to take off and restricts your peripheral vision a bit. For safety, the hockey helmet is better, but the pillow cushion actually is not.
@@eauhommeWe are taught to set up along the inside corner between the catcher and batter. That will usually save us from taking one off the mask. Plenty of times a guy has fouled one off and I could hear it whistle right by my ear. It's harder to see the outside corner, but we have a pretty good view otherwise.
@@XXelpollodiabloXX I was taught the same, but hated being blind to the outside corner. I had another umpire teach me to work the box, more behind and above the catcher, and found I had better view of the corner. I occasionally struggled with pitches that came in low, especially if they were thrown submarine (i.e., left the hand low and stayed low all the way in, but caught the bottom of the zone), but my accuracy on the outside corner was outstanding. I once did a tournament and the people in the press box above the plate of the main field said that I didn't call a single pitch off the plate on the outside in the tournament when others were very inconsistent outside. For the most part, I didn't take that many hits. Yes, I took a few, including one that broke my mask in 1993. But no more than anyone else.
@eauhomme I may give that a try this season if I have no evaluator at the game.. I struggle so bad on the outside, especially if the field has no batter's box lines.
He missed the ball completely. It wasn't a foul ball, it was a third strike, which if the ball hits the dirt, he can try to run to first (unless first is already occupied with less than two out).
They have to finish the play. If a runner is on base, the play is still active until another Ump calls time. When I volunteered at a Little League game when I was stationed in South Dakota, their handbook they gave me a few days beforehand said as such(this could just be THEIR rules and not the MLB), and i told the players when they throw home or a pitch and I get dinged, finish the play first.
The other umpires are watching the play as well. If there's a play at the plate, one of them would have to make the call. It's not like the game suddenly stops.
Cause you feel safe taunting them from your comfy keyboard and yet you won't get a job becoming one to improve the calls you likely complain about. And you are probably one of the ones that say "let computers make the calls" but when those same computers make the calls and one is called YOU don't agree with, now suddenly the computers are buggy and need updates and need this and that. It's a never-ending cycle
@crazyman7671 Fantastic reply... or maybe I've become desensitized on the way "Some" not all Umpires and/or Officials in MLB use their authority to let their emotions go ramped. Sort of the way RUclips comments are. Umpires or Side Judges have ruined some of the best games. But worst of all, not allowing themselves to be held accountable. Of course, not all are bad. Same as not all comments are bad, but the ones that are ruin it for the rest of us. NOW I'M SURE I DON'T FEEL BAD. Bring on the computers!!!
Some of these batters hesitating and only helping the Ump after a minute or so, seem to give the "Oh. I better help so i dont look like an a-hole" vibe. Not really sincere
None of it is. The gear can only do so much. A ball to the mask still feels like a hard punch, and your neck snapping back can hurt just as much or more. Shots to the chest still leave a nice bruise. Knee pads only keep the kneecap from being broken. And sometimes the ball misses the padding, especially when you get hit in the shoulder. Twice I've had to finish games calling strikes with my left hand because I took a foul ball to the right shoulder under the pad and couldn't raise my right arm afterward.
@user-qy4wq3jb1q just another case of someone insulting the umpires, not caring about the fact that they are human just like us, but refuse to volunteer or get a job as one to improve the calling
8:28 " YOU GUYS SUCK " 😂
Respect for the players caring for the ump
i know., That first catcher was punk
Buster Posey was like f**k em

It’s interesting the catchers know immediately just from the sound, when the ump is hurt.
Hit hard, whoa- Dave Sims
I don’t understand why the person or persons making these videos just clip it..show the whole thing..
The old fashion pillow cushion would help. keep the goalie helmet
The goalie helmet is more dangerous

3:00 🤣🤣🤣
Some of these guys kill me setting up right behind the dish. They’re setting themselves up.
If they don't, they don't have as good a view of the strike zone.

9:32 Don't think I've ever seen a triple hit before or since.
Next can you do each video lil longer please 🙏🥺
I thought for sure that the thumbnail was clickbait 😲
Is real
At least these are unintentional.
I love to see these. 😂
Why in 2:23 the batter was running? It was a missed and foul ball.

I know some of these had to hurt
RIP Pete Rose, there'll never be another player like you
No love for the umpire in the first clip. Bro was more worried where the ball went 😅

Whoa- Paul Severino.
They've better be careful hurrrrrt. 😣😣

I want to feel bad... why don't I...???

Wow, no comments
They look so goofy why are they even on the field
Cause they’re required for the game?? Have you never played baseball??

報復審判か?
