      I unfortunately went to a school like this and did lose my mind, I was the only Arab Muslim in my whole entire 500 student grade lmao. I can’t express how much I hated it there, most of my friends did not go to my school lmao. I’m in college now and I go to one of the most diverse universities in the country now (University of Illinois at Chicago) and I swear it’s such a refreshing relief.

      Exactly!!! Like advocating freedom of speech to express yourself there in that video with an oppressive symbol is allowed, agreeable, and understandable, but not for this instance discussed in this video?
      You can hide behind an old flag and the support that you know you'd get from other like-minded alongside you, but what Colin Kaepernick did was brave because it was new and highly relevant. And though being widely supported wasn't guaranteed, he didn't let this stop him from expressing his truths and using this as a platform to create space for a new discussion. "Democracy is hypocrisy (Malcolm X)." Still true to this day. The difference between this video from the one about the confederate flag is that the students advocating for it don't have a strong connection or belief in it, but the kneeling to Kaepernick had meant so much more to him, making it that much more powerful.

    • @violetblossom50
      @violetblossom50 4 года назад +3

      @Fjj "your people"? Don't say that it sounds derogatory and belittling and you know it. Be respectful and say African American or just American because you'll don't call yourself European American. Also, American patriotism started slavery in the first place... what do you want us to say, "thank you." America has a lot to work on especially with racial issues.

    • @violetblossom50
      @violetblossom50 4 года назад

      Fjj the south is apart of america and american culture. Also slavery was all over America and American Territories starting with the 13 colonies when America was still under British rule.

    • @RedToons1
      @RedToons1 4 года назад +2

      @Fjj I dont know why you keep arguing that this form of protest disrespects the military and its veterans. Kaepernick got a lot of support from military personnel not because they agreed with his messages necessarily, but because they respect his right to protest. In fact, as others have pointed out, the kneeling element was a suggestion by a veteran, since taking a knee is something that is done in the military.
      You've also tried to separate history for some reason as if slavery, segregation, and the overall bigotry experienced by black Americans is somehow the fault of the south. America is one country with one history - you don't see Germany not taking responsibility for nazis or trying to argue that that was just Hitler and not Germany itself. You're allowed to love the US and be patriotic, but people who recognize an issue within a country and try to bring attention to it and change it are just as patriotic and you should not fault them for their actions.
      The constitution may have been written over 300 years ago, but its only been in the last 50 years that black people have seen some sort of equality in America. And even then, it hasn't been great. So just because he's protesting and people are agreeing with it does not make them ungrateful or unAmerican or automatically mean that they don't recognize the sacrifices of the military

He explained that when he lost a soldier during his deployments, him and other soldiers would kneel to honor his sacrifice. Teachers didn't have the bravery to discuss those real issues. Honestly, a lot of my teachers were prejudiced. I'm Latina, I dated a black kid in school. Inquire about it No. The people are arguing for the right to fly the confederate by the government. If a private company wants to fire one of their workers because they fly the confederate flag, they have every right to do so. The difference is the government is suppose to protect free speech. All free speech. In the Kaepernick situation he works for a private business, the NFL and they have every right to legally take disciplinary action against him if he refuses to stand for the flag.

      Coming from a family of veterans and family that work for the military now, I agree. People are so caught up in protecting the “symbol” of veterans and use them as an excuse to be offended when one person wants to bring light into corruption happening in the US; and then they ignore veterans issues in the US. It’s almost as if they pick and choose when they want to care about our veterans. We need more respect for our veterans, but to villianize a silent protest asking for change so killing innocent people would not happen in police encounters, and perceive it as offensive to our American identity, and to bring up the topic of disrespecting veterans just because it gives you a reason to go against it is absurd! Like you can’t pick and choose when you want to use veterans and pretend to care about them just because they make a reasonable arguement. What’s more offensive to veterans is the mistreatment of veterans in society when they come home with mental illnesses or how homeless veterans are treated. Action in our day to day lives and illustrating what the flag is for is far more important than the symbolism of it and standing. Rather than use veterans as a reason to oppose shedding light on corruption in a PEACEFUL protest, why not harbor that energy in advocating for veterans issues happening today along side rather than bashing the person advocating for improvement... if those people cared about veterans so much, they would be doing something similar alongside, shedding light on the homelessness crisis with veterans, veterans who come home with untreated PTSD, and mental disorders, Veterans who come home to no family or support... but instead these people choose to be offended over kneeling that sheds a light on corruption... they only use veterans as an excuse to defend their need to fuel their national identity. Their idea of respecting veterans is grilling burgers on Veterans Day and standing for the anthem. But how does that show that they really care for our veterans? It doesnt. This all has to do with people only using veterans as a reason because it gives them an excuse to defend corruption. If someone is calling out corruption, it should inspire others to call out corruption of shed light on issues rather than be tone deaf and try to fuel their American identity. If anything his peaceful protest should inspire others to call out issues happening WHILE appreciating those who fought for our country. But people believe their national identity and doing all this symbolic and useless talk to fuel their American identity is more important than calling out corruption.

      @@squidneythesquid2487 !!!! Yes while we respect and show love for our country, it is our responsibility to stand and strive for improvement of the flaws our institutions hold. We can’t love and be satisfied 100% otherwise nothing would improve. Especially when our institutions have never improved of course people would want to shed light. Kneeling was not a conflict of respect, but highlighted the conflict overlooked. The kneeling was respectful and a peaceful protest symbolically.
