In Canada when you are diagnosed with Osteoporosis you are allowed one free bone scan per year which is very helpful. I started taking once a week medication in 2021 and when I had my bone scan in 2022 I received some great news that all my numbers are now trending in the right direction. Obviously the medication and other lifestyle changes are really helping.

I had 2 at Yale then a Yale satellite. That had my spine going from -1.9 5 years prior to -2.9. I went back to original place 7 months later (different year) and it was -2.1 spine which I think was more accurate. She used wedge and straps on feet. I did have many blood tests and kicked butt for 7 months, weighted vest, heavier weights (up to 20lbs) and upped protein and calcium but that difference was not explainable. My doctor tried to talk to them, couldn't get a straight answer, but just said, keep doing what your doing and we'll test in original place in a year. I wont switch again.

The real purpose of DEXA is to begin prescribing drugs so it’s not a great test unless you want to be on bone drugs. Also, DEXA does not measure bone strength which is different than bone density.

TOTALLY disagree..Dexa to determine bone density..and thennl it is your decision if you use drugs...if not need to do strength training and diet and avoid certain exercises that could put youvat risk for fracture.

There are good reasons to have a scan. This guy said nothing about drugs. I agree that bone strength is also important.

Because early on, being diagnosed with Sjogrens I had a DEXA done years ago, with great results. I experience hip, knee, ankle and arch of foot all on my left side. After a one time visit to a PT the gal was terrific, but too expensive to see regularly, not in network.
However, I was finally given a muscle relaxer, after about a month of taking, I have much less pain and better mobility. I would love to be able to be pain free so I could walk, after viewing this I will try.

Your videos are so helpful. Do you have one on the problems with absorbing nutrients? The only points I can see from your video that have contributed to my osteoporosis are IBS and taking Zoloft. I went vegetarian and track my protein, do functional strength training twice a week and I’m working on being more consistent with 7500 steps a day. Thank you for helping people like me 😊 with your videos!

Increase muscle helps bone density, want to know more...I'm getting older and get tired always exercising...yes I have absorbtion issues...my doctor just takes test and won't tell me how to help myself...just standard stuff...and once I'm out the door I'm left on my own ..

In my experience, doctors don’t tell you anything unless you specifically ask. They mostly are trained in prescribing medications once you meet the criteria of a condition, in this case osteoporosis. We need to advocate for ourselves and ask questions. It will become clear to you (and the doctor!) that they perhaps have no alternative advice to give you, for instance non-medication approaches for bone loss prevention, etc. This can possibly help you find another doctor who has an interest in the condition beyond medications.
I can recommend Margaret Martin, PT, here on RUclips! She specializes in everything osteoporosis and has many years of experience.

  • @gayedawn1

And then what after the test? Some injections like Prolia have side effects and if you STOP WHICH IS NOT RECOMMENDED, they say you will be 6% more likely to have fractures and breakages so put up with the adverse effects. Alternatively have a food and exercise plan to counter the Prolia rebound damage.

  • @Portia620

Wow, I had a DEXA scan top in my 40s and I believe another one in my 30s cause they diagnosed me osteopenia in my 30s and I have Graves’ disease so it’s an autoimmune disorder that affects the bones so any autoimmune disorder can possibly it to and if you’re Asian dissent that makes you high risk as well.

  • @lindakautzman7388

Hear his words! EXCELLENT ADVICE. Get Dexa now starting in at age 50 if RISK factors. Check every one or two years so bone quality is tracked over time..Start the strength and walking program NOW.
EVERYONE looses bone mass over time.
Protein diet NOW..Eliminate processed food, alcohol, smoking..My primary care provider only suggested calcium and vitamin D supplication...That is no where near enough to make a diffrence. Healthy DIET, walking and WEIGHT bearing exercise..and watch all of
his videos..Great gudiance you probably wont get from your primary care provider.

I also went to hosplital bone center. Went to satellite time before last and it had my spine at -2.9. My doctor was shocked it changed so much and I hit supplements, heavier weights, vest etc. A year later, back at hospital, it's -2.1. Can a different machine be that different? Sure it changed from 5 years before, I wasn't in "2"s yet, but that's a big difference. I'm glad it's better and will keep up regimen though.

I keep wondering why there are discrepancies between DEXA machines. Doesn't that make them potentially inaccurate depending upon which machine is used? I have been looking into an ultrasound scan (Echolight) that is just entering the US market (it has been used in Italy for years) that not only does not expose you to radiation, but it shows that actual bone quality as well as the density. I wish it was available where I live. I think there was supposed to be a site opening in Seattle, but the info is hard to come by.

Had that problem. Started using veg & dairy protein powders, did not go down well, not absorbing. Increased dairy but ldl went up so I have 2 eggs a week, during cold months 1 can of sardines a week, when I can get fresh salmon which is far and in between I’ll have a piece, if I can afford scallops I’ll get some. Beans on a regular basis
