- The Red Sox brought in a very special guest to sing "Sweet Caroline" in the middle of the eighth inning on Saturday April 20th: the man who wrote and sang the sang the song himself, Neil Diamond. The Fenway tradition has been used by teams across all sports to honor Boston since Monday's marathon bombings. The crowd got into the song like never before with Diamond leading them.
He got up at 4 in the morning and flew in from L. A all on his own dime. The Red Sox didn't ask him. He's a real good guy.
For as ridiculous as our obsession with sports can get sometimes, it's these moments that make it all make sense. This reminds me of the first Yankees game after 9/11. Still brings me to tears. Sports help us connect as humans.
What a tribute to Boston! As a die hard Neil Diamond fan, I have nothing but admiration for how he flew in and asked if he could sing ... what a way to pick up everyone in Boston and for that matter, the world! I have always loved it when Neil sang Sweet Caroline at concerts and I will never forget this rendition at Fenway and the great response from the fans.
I am Boston born and raised. I always loved it when sweet Caroline came on at sox games and the fact that Neil diamond came to perform live after the tragedy in our city, meant a lot. We are boston strong!
Greetings from Halifax Nova Scotia and keep strong Boston!
Greetings from Cleveland, Ohio we are all #BostonStrong
After the week they have had, GREAT for them! They and the NATION needed it!
even at his age now he STILL sounds so good... alot of singers imo sound so different as they age but not Diamond extremely impressive
That was bloody good Neil Diamond doing this, I was never a fan of his, but after him singing in Boston at this game, I am now.
From a Yankees fan/true blood New Yorker! My heart is with all the Boston Citizens! This is one of the most heartwarming things I have ever seen :) You all are so strong and I hope that even something as small as a baseball game or just a comment from a Yankee who you would usually hate can lift your all's spirit!
From one to another We the city of NY/Yankees Love all of you!
I was there for this, It was truly epic!
greetings from spain. you are great!
That was beautiful and uplifting.
so proud of this country and the city of Boston, BOSTON STRONG BABY!!
we fear nobody and nothing .. prayers to the four victims.. and all the severly injured i pray all the time..
great song, by a great guy for very awesome people!
Surprised everyone. Flew in on his own dime and asked if he could sing! I think that's why he's singing to a vocal version of the song. Extremely last-minute appearance.
so great. Love my city!!
As a die hard hard Yankees fan living in New Zealand that made brought a tear to my seeing Neil Diamond honoring Boston at Fenway also rise up Beantown and stay strong
What could have been better for Boston? I am so glad Neil Diamond showed up for them. I love that man!

AWESOME!!! CHEERS for the thoughtful consideration of Neil Diamond. May the healing of the People of Boston and those who have suffered loss, know, yes, Americans are Hands touching Hands, reaching out touching You, touching Me. Blessings to All who have endured and caring thoughts and prayers. Neil Diamond, bringing it home, thoughtful healing.
The one and only Neil Diamond flew to Boston today to lead us in "Sweet Caroline" #BostonStrong
What a fantastic performer.
Hope he performs till he is 120 years old.
Thank you Neil Diamond for doing that for the people of Boston. Stay strong, Boston. You're a great people. Love from Arkansas.
That was nice of Neil Diamond to do that for Boston. I don't just look at Neil Diamond as just a true American. He's a true global class act & a good human being. A truly nice man. I'm happy for Boston that they had this nice memorable moment to share after such tragedy. I remember reading 1 story where Neil wasn't feeling well, his voice wasn't good at 1 concert, & he told fans that they could ask for refund & that concert was free for them. Neil has always been classy, thoughtful, & nice.
Boston is really Blessed with such a great artist/songwriter singing this beautiful song in person, especially during these days. Tremendously nice! Be blessed as well, Neil!
Boston is strong. Not only did we get through this, but we refuse to let it dictate our happiness. Saw Neil Diamond when he was at Boston for 4th of july concert, but this time, it touched people on a personal and powerful level. Before, it was a party. This time, people were so passionate about joining in
Even though I am a Yankees fan, this was so sweet for the people of Boston affected by the Boston Marathon Bombing.
now I have three special moments at Fenway Park, I'm 80 and was lucky enough to be in the left field stands the day Ted gave the left field fans the finger, and watched today when Pappi used the best way to tell the fans just how great his city of Boston in and then to see and Neil on his own pay tribute to the loyal Red Sox who over the years have let fans escape the stress that some days this world can put on us.
Awesome of Neil to do this! Very inspiring! Thank u Neil! And thank u Boston for coming together in tragedy! God be with us all
It is a long standing tradition that Sweet Caroline is played at every home game of the Red Sox
this was cool neil an awsome guy just comeing out just for this.
Some of the healing lyrics in this Red Sox "theme" song are spooky. Hurtin runs off my shoulders and the night don't seem so lonely is my fondest wish for all affected.
Great Song....Great Singer.. Love it.
Priceless !!!
So Sweet Of Neil Diamond!!! ( :
I have never been more proud to be an American! I saw Neil Diamond the DAY I got home from bootcamp and that brought me to tears when he sang America(1986), I was proud then, uniform and all, but THIS is what AMERICA is UNITY!
wow...wish I'd been there!
What a GREAT American he is !! Love this guy!!!!!!
As a Boston guy, comments here from Yankee fans mean a lot. In talking about how to come back stronger than ever from an attack like this, what they showed our country after 9/11 is something we can all learn from. Thanks, NY.
This is because no MATTER WHAT YOU DO TO AMERICA we are all AMERICANS.
I love his voice. It’s asadvv CB that we can’t hear his voice again’
Neil has just such a fantastic voice!!
God love ya'll Bstonians. I don't agree with your politics for the most part but we're all Americans and this nation started with you. I spent over six years in Massachusetts stationed in Ft. Devens just about 60 miles east of Boston. Loved it and my thoughts and prayers are with you.
I love this man.
LOVE THIS!
this is the best
The origins of the song’s association with the Red Sox date back to Amy Tobey, who worked for the Red Sox through a film and video communications company. From 98 to 04, she was responsible for selecting the music that would be played in the park.
“She had noticed ‘Sweet Caroline’ was used at other sporting events. She decided to send it over the Fenway speakers,” “The song was picked up by fans”
The tradition eventually settled on the song being played during the eighth inning of every game.
I'm Neil Friggin' Diamond !!! (gotta LOVE this...what a class act)
Laker fans are with you, Boston!
LOVE IT
Boston Strong!!! Amazing.
Boston is the best always 😢❤❤❤
I'm a life-long fan of Neil from age 20 to this day. Alot of ppl think he's old fashioned and/or this particular song is old and CORNY. Well I say, God love him and his compassion and devotion to fans and people in general. He and I are aging together; I love his grey hair and the beard! I hadn't seen the beard! Thank you Neil for a generous and well- received surprise for the citizens of Boston. I feel I "know" you thru your music, but mostly we know u via musical expressions of LOVE. Kudos.
You have to admit, Neil Diamond is the shit.
B Strong Boston! What a nice surprise to touch Boston's heart to help the healing.
This Hoosier is BOSTON STRONG !
So cool, they broke into the White Sox game here in Chicago to show the anthem and then Sweet Caroline!

Boston,MA- the perfect mix of American patriotism, founded on the pragmatic foundations of Scottish work ethic honed by Irish muscle and verse.
And an American/Scots/Irish reaction..is quite a fuckin thing
I find it absolutely shocking that 8 people watched this video and decided they didn't like what they saw
Classy ^
I don't understand why "Sweet Caroline' I'm a Diamond fan have been Since the 60's...I fell it was so cool of him to do this but why that song?"
