You did such a great job. I just purchased my first piece of IKEA furniture…. the Hemnes dresser in white. I am thrilled to know I can change this dresser when and if I want to in the future. I purchased some beautiful knobs for it already. Thanks again!!!
I just came across this video. I have a white Hemnes dresser. So wish me luck. I hope mine turns out as nice as yours did. But did you know you can hook a vacuum hose onto the sander? You just remove the little filter bag. I believe it is meant for a shop vac, but may work with a quieter house vac.
I’m still so impressed with how neat of a painter you are. I am redoing a dresser right now in my storage room And I have gotten paint all over the floor 😂
Wow! This is awesome! I have never used chalk paint but I’ve been wanting to redo an old ugly dresser of mine and now I totally want to use this! I love the finished result, you did a fantastic job! My husband and I fix up old houses and try to save money by repurposing as much furniture and old odds and ends as we can. Thank you for the inspiration! 💕
I did my son's changing table in white chalk paint right before he was born and it was my first time ever doing it. I didn't do a top coat and I really wish I would have. I am going to redo it again at some point in the future and plan to put a top coat next time! lol This turned out SO good! It makes me wonder if I should do my dresser and night stands!
I'm checking out your video over 2 years later. How has the dresser held up regarding scratches and the clear coat? Any additional recommendations since then? I'm about to paint the same dresser for my 6 year old's bedroom. 'Nuf said, right? 😆
I've got the five chest of draws in same name from IKEA and want to paint white and mirror them so looking for ideas about the paint work....thanks from UK 🇬🇧 🙏
Ok first off where have you been all my life? I love this. I purchased a dining table from west elm years ago and I just refinished it! I love love love ikea and this is so cool. I am for sure going to do this. Its funny because I was looking at this dresser and wishing it came in a different color. You have a new fan!!!
For filling the holes, would it easier to tape over the outside of the draw with blue tape and then fill them from the inside? Maybe that helps to skip the sanding process? Just a random thought tho... It looks so different afterward! I like it!
I like the makeover, and I love the pulls you chose. But am I seeing indentations where the old hardware holes used to be? It seems like those holes weren't really filled properly, and you probably should have gone back and done a second round of filling.
I have these horrible/hideous cabinets in my apt that comes from the 80s. Do you think Chalk paint would be able to paint over them without any sanding? some parts look like pressed wood
I’m about to have my baby and I’ve been thinking about getting this dresser and I wanted it tall enough to not be hurting my back while changing her cause I want to put a changing table at the top so In that case I was wondering how tall are you ?
I honestly have no clue. Loved before color but it had paint splattered all over it because we’ve had this for almost 10 years. I just know that IKEA does not sell this color anymore and I honestly don’t know why!
You did a great job there! I have that exact Ikea Hemnes dresser in my bedroom but I have the dark brown/black wood one, the colour you ended up painting your dresser. My question is, wouldn't it have been easier if you bought the dark coloured dresser in the first place and then just updated the hardware?
No, because what i painted it is a completely different color than the dark brown one they have. Also, my finish is a matte finish so its not glossy. We also don't have an ikea near us so I cant just go buy one. Very sad lol. I miss ikea for sure! Also this only cost me $25 because I had most of what I used for this project.
It is very smooth not chalk like at all. And I would say the top coat is why it’s smooth for sure. The paint it’s self with out a top coat is def chalky.
Im not sure of the color. They actually dont sell this color anymore though. I loved it but it was dinged up and had old paint splattered on it. It was time for a makeover!
Depends on what your opinion of "good" is. While Ikea is probably best known for furniture made of compressed wood chips sandwiched between plastic veneer, just steer clear. ... Furniture made of solid wood-preferably a hardwood like oak or acacia, but even a softwood like Swedish pine-is always going to be sturdier than fiberboard. I don't own any Ikea. My 30 yr old Drexel Heritage and Ethan Allen pieces are still in style and sturdy as ever.
Yes its the black color by the Rust-Oleum chalked paint. They only have one black color i forget the name but I should have it listed in the description!
Although I personally prefer the originals style, the redo looks amazing and she did an amazing job! It suits the space a lot more. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it does look great
I never have drop cloths down when working. I paint so much that I’m just extremely careful. I usually will set the can on some kindof cloth but that’s it
Yes there is some blemishes and thats me learning since I have never done a whole project on furniture with chalk paint. And the blemishes came from the top coat which i have now learned that you dont go back over twice with your brush. Thats how people get better at things is doing them and learning from their mistakes. I love how it turned out and the blemishes really aren't that noticeable in person.
Yup! 😃 I covered the bed! And then did a deep clean. We really have nothing in our room so it was easy to clean. And I never pay anything on the floor while painting. I rarely ever drop. And if you do it comes off super easy.
I'm really sorry, but you waffled for six minutes before starting the makeover. You could have talked about the material as you went along. I couldn't watch the video as I got bored by the waffling. I apologise again, maybe I need to learn to have more patience. Xx
You are such an inspiration. I don't need another piece of furniture, however, I enjoy watching these transformations.
Thank you so much!
You made this look so easy! I can't wait to paint a couple of Hemmes dressers we have. I want to try using pole wrap on one of them.
Great idea!!
You did such a great job. I just purchased my first piece of IKEA furniture…. the Hemnes dresser in white. I am thrilled to know I can change this dresser when and if I want to in the future. I purchased some beautiful knobs for it already. Thanks again!!!
It’s the perfect dresser!
I am redoing a dresser right now in my storage room
And I have gotten paint all over the floor 😂
Hahahahaha. You sound like my husband. That’s why he’s not aloud to paint lol
I like it. It looks in near perfect condition but koodles to your husband for letting you do whatever you want with it and keeping you happy.
I think she is perfectly fine with keeping herself happy. She is not her husband's pet or something
What's a koodle?
hi friend. i have the same dresser but am looking to paint it white. do i need to do a primer or anything before the chalk paint?
You should total try to repaint sowmthing!
Yes do them! Just do the topcoat and it should be safe!
I'm checking out your video over 2 years later. How has the dresser held up regarding scratches and the clear coat? Any additional recommendations since then? I'm about to paint the same dresser for my 6 year old's bedroom. 'Nuf said, right? 😆
This dresser turned out beautiful!! I love the legs you added too!
Thank you
I've got the five chest of draws in same name from IKEA and want to paint white and mirror them so looking for ideas about the paint work....thanks from UK 🇬🇧 🙏
Very nice a fresh coat of paint always does the trick
Paint is a magical thing!
Watching from south America love yur work is it black chalk paint?
Awe thanks! And yes it is black
Great makeover
Thank you!

I am for sure going to do this. Its funny because I was looking at this dresser and wishing it came in a different color. You have a new fan!!!
Awesome! Thanks so much!! I loved the before color but it just needed a facelift and I was ready for something new 😀
This looks beautiful. I'd actually like to buy one, paint the faces of a Medium Brown one white and switch out the hardware. Yours looks beautiful.
Thank you so much!
This looks so good. I’ve never painted my dresser before. Do I need to take any extra steps if I’m going lighter with the paint (vs. darker)?
Nice work. I had been admiring the dresser in the other videos
Thank you! I love it!
Hi what’s the name of the handles you put on? I love this idea.
Thank you! I have them listed in the description down below.
For filling the holes, would it easier to tape over the outside of the draw with blue tape and then fill them from the inside? Maybe that helps to skip the sanding process? Just a random thought tho...
It looks so different afterward! I like it!
It didn’t require much sanding to be honest but idk if that would work or not. My guess is it would need to dry for way longer.
Hi! Did you finish 1 can of paint for this drawer?
Very nice! I loved it 👍👍
Thank you!
Great video! Your results were awesome! How many coats did you use?
I want to say 2-3 coats! Thank you by the way!
beautiful job did you use glue for the legs or screws? Thank you
screw them!
24.00 is a great makeover price! Love the end result
I know you can’t beat that!
I have 3 hemnes dressers in my house, this is sooo tempting 😂❤️❤️ it’s even just a great idea to change out the handles so they look unique!
The handles are my favorite!
I just bought a pre owned dresser and it’s the very dark brown so you suggest me sand it down ?before painting it white ?
Not if you are going to be using the paint that I used in this video. I didn’t sand it down at all
I like the makeover, and I love the pulls you chose. But am I seeing indentations where the old hardware holes used to be? It seems like those holes weren't really filled properly, and you probably should have gone back and done a second round of filling.
Your right! But i didn't lol
Awesome video definitely going to do this!!
Thank you!!
Love it. Next time hook your sander up to your vacuum - it makes so much of a difference with reducing the dust created.
Great tip!
I love those handles! And the color! ❤️
Thank you so much!
I also love your rug in your bedroom. mind sharing where you purchased it?
Yes! Rugs USA. Its a indoor/outdoor rug!
I have this same dresser in black. I want to paint it white. Do I need to sand down the dresser first?
I like the way you did the dresser legs. Those legs would look great on cubbies too. Thanks from Vancouver Island Canada
Thanks for watching!!
I have these horrible/hideous cabinets in my apt that comes from the 80s. Do you think Chalk paint would be able to paint over them without any sanding? some parts look like pressed wood
Yes it should be fine! This dresser isn't real wood is mdf
What grit did you use for your sand block?
Great job!!!! Loved the color and how minimalist it looks.
Thank you! That’s what I was going for!
Hi! I have this dresser and the middle support leg broke off. Any recommendation to fix it?
I would go buy a 1x2 and just cut to size and screw it in!
wowowowow! great job, it looks amazing
Thank you so much!!
This video was just suggested to me. When I saw who it was, I just wanted to say hi :) Love the dresser
Haha thanks! ❤️😊
I’m about to have my baby and I’ve been thinking about getting this dresser and I wanted it tall enough to not be hurting my back while changing her cause I want to put a changing table at the top so In that case I was wondering how tall are you ?
what color was the original dresser ? what did it say on the website
This looks great! What is the original color of the dresser before?
I honestly have no clue. Loved before color but it had paint splattered all over it because we’ve had this for almost 10 years. I just know that IKEA does not sell this color anymore and I honestly don’t know why!
Hello. What is the second layer to the top please? Is it a type of wax? 10:20
I share it all in the description. All I used was the chalk paint then a top coat of clear matte finish. It’s like a polycrylic
It looks great!
Thank you!
Hi, did you sand down the whole unit before painting?
No i didn't! With the chalk paint you don't need too.
Off the topic.. where did you get the small shelf unit from pls? Looks good matches with the new dresser color.
The one on top of the dresser? It’s from target it’s the hearth and hand collection!
Ty!
This dresser was already painted but I wanted to confirm that using this chalk paint will work over laminate 🥰 thanks!!
Yes it does!
This looks so good!! Awesome!
Thank you!

Does the finished product feel chalky because of the paint or does the Mayte too coat make it smooth?
It is very smooth not chalk like at all. And I would say the top coat is why it’s smooth for sure. The paint it’s self with out a top coat is def chalky.
Nicer the way it was.
😁 it had paint splattered in it so it needed some lovw
what was the name of the original color of the dresser?
Are the draws like a melamine finish like mine pls ?
The wood is pine
Neat Finish 👍
Thanks 👍
What size sand paper did you use?
Love it! If I want to do this to one of my pieces that has the fake wood texture would that require full sanding?
No I didn't sand. I would just lightly run a sanding block over it to rough it up a little!
Love it!
Thank you!
I seriously love the finished product!!!
Okay watching you paint is relaxing lol 😂😂😂😂
Omg it's beautiful!! I love it!! The color is perfect!!
Thank you! I think thats what I love the most is the velvety color.
Does chalk paint go straight on melamine without primer please? Sorry about the questions
Chalk paint doesn’t need a primer I explained in the video my process! ❤️
@@simplydiyhome yes I know sorry....was just wondering if it did on melamine as some videos say it does, sorry for asking question
@@smallone9825 No need to be sorry. I have no clue what melamine is. The dresser is made out of pine wood and particle board.
What color is the dresser originally? Is it the grey one?
Im not sure of the color. They actually dont sell this color anymore though. I loved it but it was dinged up and had old paint splattered on it. It was time for a makeover!
Where I can find dresser with leter Nob?
Is Ikea furniture good? Nightstands and chest of drawers??
Yes! I love Ikea. You have to put it all together but this dresser is almost 10 years old!
What is the stain of the initial dresser?
Where did you get that 4 tier shelf that's sitting on top of the dresser?
Its from target!!
How many Total containers of the color paint did you use?
Less than half. I have had that one can and used it on multiple projects including my fireplace tile and another small furniture project
Great job!!!
❤️😊Thank you so much
Obsessed with how this turned out!! You should turn this into a business!! So so good 😍
Could you tell me the name and colour of paint you used?
Yes its the black color by the Rust-Oleum chalked paint. They only have one black color i forget the name but I should have it listed in the description!
I hope you don’t mind me asking but what is the original color of the dresser?
I honestly dont know it wasn't real wood but It was a pretty color. I think i would call it def a grey stain for sure
Omg finalllyyyy watching this!!
Sanding sponge. :)
I’m trying to follow your Instagram and such. The links in the description don’t work!
Oh darn let me double check them!!!
I checked them all and they seem to be working so not sure why it wasn’t working for you 🤷♀️🤦🏼♀️
When the dresser before looked better
👍🏻
Although I personally prefer the originals style, the redo looks amazing and she did an amazing job! It suits the space a lot more.
Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it does look great
Life Made Simple hope you’re impressed with yourself, you did a much better job than I could do. not getting paint everywhere tell me you secret!
Just different. Not necessarily better.....
Good job!
❤️
I’m literally sobbing that dresser’s color is only available aboard 😭😭
I loved the color before but it was close to 10 years old and had old paint all over it! But i agree so pretty!
Owners of hemnes dressers - ikea suggest the dresser is a tipping hazard and be anchored to a wall. Is that true and have people done that?
They suggest all of them be bolted to the wall. Not just this dresser. All their pieces come with hardware to bolt them!
It's to insure themself from being sued in America. The land of suing.
Chalk paint must not drip as you don’t have a drop cloth down.
I never have drop cloths down when working. I paint so much that I’m just extremely careful. I usually will set the can on some kindof cloth but that’s it
Work
The original stain and hardware was very pleasant, I'm not sure I dig the after, sorry.
That’s fine. It’s not for everyone ❤️❤️ I loved the before but it was badly scratched and had old paint splatter on it
I'm a dude and awesome job
Lol thanks!
editing note: start your video at 3:34
People is painting furniture like your original dresser😅
The handle looks too dark...
I like black
Sanding inside is a nightmare 4 sure😖😅
😅 it was not fun. Nor will I do it again 😂
I was getting anxiety watching!
This time I will do it manually with the help of Woodglut designs.
I wish the handle were different color maybe golden?🤷♀️
Gold would look good too! I went back and forth on that but all the other hardware in my room was black so I chose that
I love these type of vidéos but I cannot stand how in between when they talk the music is ungodly loud compared to the voices. It’s to much.
Sanded it in the BEDROOM ?? And no drop cloth ?? Well ok !

sure sounds like it!
Seriously? You're complaining about the clip and you didn't even watch it? Get somebody to show you how to use the 10 sec skip forward arrows.. 😳
slaps some paint on a dresser, changes the knobs and calls is extreme.
sure.
Looked pretty extreme to me 😂
Gotta have the negative person! It looks great!!!!!!!! Hater
