  • The teenagers who live underground: Ukraine invested billions in infrastructure projects for the 2012 European football championships. But while the fans enjoyed the facilities, most of them didn't know that living around them - and beneath their feet - were young homeless people left on their own to survive dangerous, subterranean lives. Marcel Theroux went to Kiev to meet the children in 2012.

Sniffing glue and other methods of getting high reduces hunger. I was on the streets for 3 months in middle of winter when I was 15 after trying to get help for dangerous home environment. I was kicked out because my parents found out. Hunger is a horrible feeling. In my opinion it is harder to handle than being cold. You get to a point where you consider doing things you never thought you ever would just to feel better, even if it is just temporary. Because I wasn't legally emancipated anyone that tried to give me a place to stay, including the youth shelter, would have been charged with harboring a minor. I was so fortunate to be able to stay away from drugs, alcohol, and prostitution. And that I was able to rely completely on myself because there was no help available anywhere at that time. But that was why I was able to become self-sufficient at 16 with a GED, 2 jobs, and an apt. At 21 I put myself through college, graduating with honors. I have now worked in the mental health field for 30yrs with both kids and adults and my early experiences have oddly enough become a blessing in disguise. @@meghanferrari6501 I'm from Ukraine. There are organizations that help, they are sponsored by ordinary people. I transfer small amounts every month. But resources are still not enough and the government is more hindering than helping. Last winter, due to the epidemic, they drove homeless people from train stations, several people froze to death. Volunteers cannot accommodate them all, they asked the authorities to help with the premises, but they refused. Sometimes I hate the government so much that it seems now I'm going to explode and just die. But this is life, you need to continue to believe and fight, especially for the weakest and most vulnerable. There are people here who are ready to do this and it gives hope.

Kind of like the glue you see here …. They all replied because it takes the hunger away. These kids get addicted at a very young age to combat feeling hungry and then it turns both into an addiction and a cure for an empty stomach.

Once I've been to Germany and I've met some homeless people, who said they don't want to be in the system, that's why they're begging on the streets.

Russia or Ukraine isn't exactly western world. Previously as USSR it was great archenemy of Western world especially: USA (see "cold war" in Wikipedia)... but now it's hard to say what exactly those countries are. USSR got countries under Russian occupation and those people suffered, countries became very poor in result what is hard to fix through decades... There is also mental and cultural gap between people from Western world and post USSR countries... but as someone from another continent, another culture it can be too detailed and complicated to know it from school. I write it as someone who lives in central europe and has fake RUclips account, interested in cultural differences in those countries. Trying to pretend English is my native language and speak with those who use it as first language... 😅

To be fair western world struggles with similar problems but on a smaller scale, although saying that US nowadays is in crisis due to opioids abuse (OxyContin and Fentanyl in particular).
Sometimes problems are also going underreported in a western world such as modern slavery etc.

I do not consider a former soviet controlled country still in shambles a western civilization. That being said there is a dark side to western civilization. Youth and the rich have it so easy that they becomes mentally ill to cope. They have very little moral foundation or moral compass. They complain about the planet and climate change yet they are some of the biggest offenders in their need for stuff, travel, and luxury. They implicitly trust some politicians (not even based on merits but on attributes...she is a woman, he is liberal, he is famous), get manipulated by the media, and live a superficial life. They want to live under a socialist regime not even paying attention to what happen in USSR. They will never find peace or happiness. You sound like you have the best life possible. If you feel you are lacking something then get out in nature more...that is what you are missing.

@@kristinessTX I have in my mind that most people in Central Europe, have experience of living in poorer life conditions, lack of help, lack of visible opportunities to change their life, everyday painful life to handle without escape but they pretend that everything is fine and they are equal with West. This pushes them to some desperation or for example to marry someone only for money only to get more financial safety and inner peace in their life. "Everything is fine and they are the same" is only on surface level of their appearance. They seem more traumatized and know how it is to live without way to change their suffering (beside drugs or alcohol). However there are also some people from Central Europe who live with higher luxury and freedom than many people from Western countries. They just don't share with others their luxury. Some rich people intentionally show others that they are rich enough to buy things which most people can't afford and feel happy and proud by intentionally shaming others by doing that in front of others. They think they are special and better than others. In Central Europe people are perceived as different and special because they can afford expensive things not because of their achievements or their character (personality). There are people with common sense which don't fall into it but they aren't in center of social attention.
Personally when I read stories about heroes from 2nd World War I feel shame in comparison to modern people in my country. Different approach to quality of their job performance, different morals. Changes are slightly for worst and more into easy comfort for short period of time.

Because we can't have all the poor people getting help, now, can we? How would "charities" make a fortune for the executive directors if everyone just helped each other?!
