If John Kew drumming RUclips is the same John Kew, holy hell is he a musician. What a talented guy in so many things
Indeed it is
Is this true
@@nn-NeuralNetwork Yeah it’s me. I don’t look THAT much older now, do I? 😂
right??
Loved the clip of Will meeting Eddie as his son! I was dying!🤣
31:46 LOL I will never forget the look in John’s eyes after the Nasty Nelson. I had no idea Brian was gonna try that 😂. I spent a couple points after ducking behind the net when John served.
Almost as funny was Doug losing his paddle when I drove the ball right at him! I think it flew about 10 feet! LOL!
Golf….2003 ish. Taylormade R580 driver in 3versions were made illegal for competition after the fact. Further back, Ping eye2 irons were banned due to grooves providing spin out of the rough. Golf has the most similar testing and controversy wth judgements as pickleball
Thanks for the shoutout guys! Was running around a bit that day but thanks for chatting and looking forward to next time already!!
great meeting you!
USAP never explains what failed. Is it the crazy grits or is it the pop, or is it the design? They needed to provide a detailed explanation, but they failed to do so.
Frankly, the testing methodology is not perfect. Especially on the pop measurement. Many RUclipsrs agreed on that as it is really a hit and miss. It is human nature to resist change, because they prefer the status quo. In my humble opinion, technology improvement is good in the long run. The Joola Gen 3 may or may not be relisted again, I can guarantee you that in less than 10 years (maybe sooner), EVERYBODY will be playing with some sort of variant of the Joola Gen3 paddles. Just unfortunately, people are resistant to change right now, which is sad.
With the newly formed UPA-A that will be the governing body of the PPA and MLP tournaments, I think the USAP will go away in the near future.
Joola knows why they failed they can also let us know but haven't
I won the contest John held a few weeks ago for a free paddle from Get 2 Eleven, and I chose the 14mm Magnus. I absolutely love it, and am pretty disappointed that I can't really use it anymore, but I am definitely going to keep it and hang it on the wall in my office. I figure it will be kind of a a legendary story in pickleball and will be a really cool collectors piece down the road.
lmao did you really win if its banned now
@@rusty935 As I said I still think it is a pretty cool collectors piece for a serious pickleball player, and I definitely have it hanging on my wall, and didn't pay for it, so yeah, pretty sure I still won it.
James Ignatowich has an interesting point of view on the hot paddles. He said that they will force the game to slow down and become a dink battle most of the time because nobody would take the risk to get one of their speed-ups countered by a good player using those extremely powerful paddles.
He illustrated that using the Frazier/Johnson team. Both of these players have awesome counters at the kitchen. Give them ultra hot paddles (even more powerful that the banned gen 3). Now everybody will try to avoid getting countered by them. The safest way to do so would be to enter a dink battle.
The theory has some merit I think
Good job guys, really enjoying the podcasts. Keep up the excellent work thanks
Glad you focused on USA Pickleball's note concerning field surveillance of paddles. I can't imagine they would include that statement unless it was important to the story.
My question, what prompted Joola to report their administrative error?
Field test results, perhaps?
Always looking forward to see your next podcast, I Play 3 Times a week with some guys that are 75 years old and they are good IT put joy in to my Heart because I am 65 and hoping playing for a long Time...
I learned from a bunch of 75 year olds! Changed my life forever!
Great episode guys 💪🏽
I was happy to see the Joola take responsibility, and I was grateful that I was torn between the Joola Gen 3 and the Hudef viva gen 3, and finally chose the Hudef, which also has good power, control and spin.
As a "science guy", I am very much data driven and very much appreciate the direction of your channel. Practical question: as manufacturers make paddles in various weights and setups, for a tinkerer, is it alway better to go with the lightest version and weight it up to the setup and final mass you are looking for, or does that change the playability of the paddle weighting too much? Also, is there an effective method for "dialing" in those changes, or simply go by "feel"? It would be great to be able to see and quantify how weight adjustments affect the paddle dynamics. On a side note, I have done a lot of playing around with filling handles with various materials and masses, removing end caps for a straighter grip etc... Again, it would be great to be able to track these changes and document the effects instead of simply going by feel. Next level maybe...
I do think that the specs for paddle should be fairly narrow so that the sport can stay a sport that people in their 70s with talent can woop up on a 20 something that might be athletic but not as talented.
Okay I’m sold on the Slyce cap. Thanks for the review!!
Pretty sweet piece of kit. Well crafted.
Great video! Sorry to hear about Joola. Love my Hudef Viva Pro Gen 3.
How much was the balance point affected by the new end cap?
Cheetah pickleball had an issue with their Perdion 5 paddle, 😮USPA said it had too much surface grit and would be an unfair advantage to your opponite. I ordered one, and didn't notice any more surface grit than any other paddle I already had. They resubmitted the paddles and got it approved.
Bought one myself when the first batch was rejected. Did not see any big spin increase either.
USAP "Average Player" is their benchmark which is found on page 75 #5 Guiding Principles...Power exceed a normal range based on what?
Speaking of eco-friendly pickleballs, Cheetah Pickleballs are made from Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), which is a recyclable plastic. Players say they perform in between a Dura and a Franklin.
It would put at a Selkirk PROS1. Durafast are faster balls, Franklins are slow. Selkirks and Vulcans are right in the middle.
The vending machine idea has been thrown around our courts for a long time... Glad to see someone taking that idea and running with it! COME TO NASHVILLE SOMETIME!🪕🏓
Hey Kew-Ball... I bought a Kineon device with your code. When are you going to do a detailed review on the device with placements for elbow and knee and associated routines?? Looking forward to that!
Honest question....many if not most of your podcasts center around great banter between you and Eddie. So why is this still named the John Kew podcast? Seems Eddie should be acknowledged to the degree he contributes, which at this point seems like 50% at least
For sure, Eddie is half of the pod! Honestly, I didn’t know what to call it when we started it, so the channel name was the default. If we changed it, what would you recommend?
@@johnkewpickleball Kew & Eddie
Appreciate the comment! But John does all the production work, research, branding, community building...the list is endless. He takes all the risk and deserves all the credit. My contribution is to spit into a mic for an hour a week! ;-) I'm Eddie McMahon to his John(ny) Kew Carson...
Yeah, I was dumb for not thinking about the behind the scenes work! Anywho, you both are a good team on camera ay least. Its not easy...like finding a good pball partner haha
Maybe …. Johnknew Podcast - PickleBros
Great video!
1:22:04 Those aren't tournament-legal....they have to be OEM-specific per the current USAP guidelines. So you'd need a weight cap directly from J2K to use with your J2K paddle, assuming Slyce doesn't have an official partnership with J2K that's USAP-approved...
Glad you’re liking your bag John! Thanks for giving it some thorough real world testing before speaking on it. Much appreciated! ❤
I enjoy hearing about when you guys all meet up. Has anyone reached out to STS or Farmer Lankey to join in on all that fun you guys have?
Just in my very small playing area I’ve seen about 5. That means there are a lot out there nation wide.
USAP must have used the new exit velocity test and they failed.. They wouldn't have failed otherwise.. Especially after the Rombus statement yesterday too.. Since the wrong paddle was sent for original approval... USAP will claim these paddles were never submitted before and are now subject to their new exit velocity test... Which I would assume the gearbox and Joolas would fail that.. But the gearbox is approved prior to the new exit velocity test so they are in.. Joola never sent in these paddles so it's basically a new paddle for testing.... I'm sure that's USAP stance..
They couldn’t have used the new testing protocol, otherwise they would’ve subjected joola to a standard that other paddles that are on the approved list have not yet been subjected to. When they do institute the new standard, all paddles will have to be tested before any can be held to that standard.
@@woodsonsanders1112 it's called grandfathering in already approved paddles.. They can't go back and hold an already approved paddle to a standard that didn't exist when they were approved.. They would be open to litigation for sure if they did that.. Hence nothing on gearbox.. As long as they hold all 'new' submissions to the new standard they are fine.. Just like on the first submission of the 'right' Joolas.. And the new Rombus not yet released for sale..
Usap stated they used the new test to confirm after the old testing failed joola. So joola failed the old and new tests
This is how screwed USAP is! Lawsuit incoming! "Allow equipment manufacturers to innovate, as long as such innovation does not overwhelm or outpace the average player’s ability to keep up with the speed and difficulty of the sport. Equipment-related rule changes should be given particularly close scrutiny because of their precedent-setting potential."
Also, the Ronbus Ripple was also approved before the new Exit Velocity and it got delisted.
I'm for regulating exit velocity on paddles. Want more power? Work on your technique! Same with spin. A pro could hit harder with a flip flop than most of us could with a Joola G3.
Are you going to do a review on the Ruby 14mm?
Hi John! Why are there no Paddletek paddles in your database? Thanks.
Are you planning on reviewing the new Paddletek TKO-C?
What company are you getting your tungsten tape from? Pickleball Effect? You mentioned a lighter tape now available?
Yes, Pickleball Effect. They now have a 0.5 g/inch tape
Just another reason why indoor pickleball is the way of professional tournaments....covered, if not fully indoors....the pro game is tough enough without having to battle weather/wind on top of the opposition...
Another example of technology being banned after being used in competition is the Speedo suit some swimmers used to break records.
It is bound to happen again. Sport equipment makers will push the boundaries of the technology until it is considered an unfair advantage, and there will be debates around who can decide what is an unfair advantage and how😅
Anna Leah and Salome’s match was delayed a few times and was outdoor to indoor and back to outdoor making it frustrating for all. I guess Salome handled it better.
The J2k is not listed on the SLYCE paddle list, what unit did you use for your J2k?
The S13 cap fits the J2K, which is the same cap that fits CRBN, PIKKL, Ronbus, Thrive, etc.
Just use a bolt. Just pennies.
Thanks.
Hi Johnkew, any plans in the future to do a fan vs content creator tournament?
What’s Eddie’s paddle setup, he takes of the original grip?
I'll talk about it on the next pod! I do take off the stock grip -- don't care for the ridged feel.
Hopefully John & Eddie had PPA insurance and will get their tournament registration refunded. Bummer that the doubles bracket was canceled after going thru all the travel delays.
Unfortunately neither of us had insurance because we registered too late
shirts are an interesting topic. my question is- PB companies (Selkirk, etc...) brand their own performance shirts but which PB company's shirts are the best (are they all the same?) and are any actually better for PB than the athletic shirts from the big guys- nike/rebok, etc...? i haven't seen anyone talking about this (even on the small up-and-coming channels like Pickleball Studio lol). I initially wore cotton t shirts but i sweat alot and found them damp and weighted quick into the session. I started thinking about running shirts- ultra light, maneuverable and non-absorbent. I bought a bunch and i absolutely love to play in them. i have an under amour, a rebok i really like the nike dri-fit and especially the nike pro combat (they don't make the combat anymore but find on e-bay) and adidas climalite.
I'm in the same boat as you - normally I don't mind playing in cotton t-shirts here in Colorado because it's so dry. But it's way different in more humid climates like Texas. I've tried most of the main brands, and so far Under Armour was my favorite. But this B&B shirt outperformed even UA
I believe USAP is trying to regulate the pickleball paddles to make it more pickleball oriented. More and more pickleball companies are coming up paddles that are more powerful and spin, very soon pickleball will look like tennis played at a smaller court, Miniature tennis. Rallies will soon be less than 5 exchanges per point with players hammering it away from the baseline or from the kitchen. I fell that it will take away the essence of pickleball and that USPA is trying to avoid this.
you got a typo "1:09:55 Six Zero Rub 14mm" 😂
The sad thing too is that Joola does not pay shipping on returns.
Was yours purchased directly through Joola? I just initiated a return and was provided a pre-paid shipping label.
I hear Joola may be filing a $45 million dollar lawsuit against the USAP. I hope so, this is long overdue!. What independent body is overseeing the USAP testing model, holding them accountable, making them more timely, more responsive to their clients? The USAP is the problem! They have no transparency, and no accountability, they're a black hole. Who is the third party tester, what is their company name, what are their qualifications, what is their track record, years in business, customer list, customer references, what scientific equipment are they using, where are their detailed, published, scientific test results for each paddle tested? The USAP collects too much money, tens of millions of dollars, to be shrouded in such secrecy. Sunlight is the best disenfectant. Pickleball is going soft with all this talk about injury, liability etc. There's a simple solution, wear protective eyewear, when compared to paddle prices, this is a simple, cheap solution. Don't dumb down pickleball more then it is. Be progressive, continue to evolve, keep an open mind, remember your fans/viewers.
Control the balls like so many other sports!! Stop all this…..
John, any reviews on the SixZero Coral paddle coming up soon?
You know, somehow I left Dallas without the Coral paddle. I'll have to ask Dale for one to test out
@@johnkewpickleball, I guess you have to review the FAT BOY next...
I want that t-shirt Eddie
Make an offer! LOL Kew merch store?!? hmmmm.....
Wish the powers that be (BIG PICKLE) lift the spin limits. Would love to shape a pickleball that curves like a ping pong ball. ATPs from the baseline would be nice. More spin is NOT dangerous.
I'm liking the "CHUCK" We'll see when it gets hotter here soon.
The cap weight method I use, is way cheaper and easier to apply is just use "bolts" Drill the hole into the end cap and just screw the bolt in. Change out is easy to find the right weight for you. Srew in and out. I use a round head that's 21gms.
I tend to agree with more spin. Tennis and table tennis have much higher spin capacity.
Utah!!!!
The JOOLA alphas have now also been de-listed, i believe.
The CIBC Texas Open was in Rockwall. It is not in Dallas. LOL ;)
PPA is calling it Dallas TX.
are you keeping your 3's or getting a refund?
refund
The current power paddles will be like gold and same designs last years as they will never be able to bring these out again in a new design while UsAp is the body in charge.
USAP will go bankrupt by the end of 2026 after facing mounting litigation.
What is that sweet hat you’re wearing, John?
It’s a Melin!
Next should be Gearbox
Johnkew likes punk rock? Lagwagon John?
First
first
They changed their standard in between the first paddle and the resubmitted paddles per other podcast.
USAP has been a slow, secretive, poorly run organization and pickleball has grown despite their awful decisions and slow, bizarre actions.
"Biggest retail refund in history"
Maybe joola shouldn't have broke the guidelines for how much foam is in the core
Can you confirm this? USAP didn't release any information as to why they paddles didn't pass.
USAP sucks! Paddles should be more powerful! Its good for the pro game, makes the game more exciting which draws more audiences which generates more money into the sport. Give the people what they want! More powerful paddles!!!
