Lapua has some really nice FMJ:s for 7.62x39. Not cheap, but good.
What is the caliber of that Ruger barrel? Historically, US gunmakers tend to put .308" barrels on these, even though the cartridge in original is .311"...

I have a gen 1 Ruger Ranch Rifle in 7.62x39. Very accurate and fun little bolt gun. Russian steel cased ammo loaded by Barnaul works great. Probably capable of sub 1/2 moa 5 shot groups with 123 gr FMJ from Barnaul with a better optic than mine (or perhaps a better bench rest shooter). I typically get about 1 1/4" 5 shot groups at 100 yards with 124 gr FMJ loads from Barnaul that I have recently been using. I am sometimes seeing fliers with 4 of the shots at 3/8 to 1/2" and the flier increasing the group to 1" to 1 1/4". Not sure if it is me or simply my issues with consistent sight picture with a 4X optic with very coarse cross hairs. The barrel is heavy enough that it is not very heat sensitive with 18 rounds out of 20 in a sub 1 1/2" group. I have never used anything but Polish, Serbian, and primarily Russian ammo thru it. It will be interesting to see what how it does with the SST!

The little Russky is deer legal pretty much everywhere here in ‘Merica. Comes very close to the .30/30 in power. My grandson has taken at least three nice bucks with his Howa. By all means do a full review! See if you can get the same rifle in 6.5 Grendel and/or 6 ARC while you’re at it.

@@baconator754 I was referring to UK law, 7.62x39 is so rarely encountered here I never even considered it until I opened this box. Regardless of that, It seems perfectly capable in the right scenario where laws allow.

What’s the accuracy with the ruger centrefires in comparison with something like a tikka?

  • @GaryOthen

What I will say on my Ruger Ranch Gen II 5.56 , after having it for a few weeks now it’s a handy little tool for sure , weighs less to nothing , super accurate . throw in your backpack & away you go ..
Couple of things I don’t like is the trigger sorry I’m a trigger snob but that’s personal thing .. I’ve ordered a Timney replacement
I’m not a fan of the cheek riser , replacement sizes are available but it’s just a pain to change out in the field I wish it was fully adjustable ..
apart from those two things. for the price I’m more then happy…

Hi Chris, Really enjoyed this video and even though you have seen, shot hundreds of rifles etc you still look genuinely enthusiastic when you give your fist impressions. I really like that about your channel. Just to add I have a .223 Tikka T3X CTR and love it. .223 rem is still a great calibre. Keep up the great work. PS: Just a quick question but have you ever considered reviewing rifle stocks?.
I put a GRS Bi-frost on my Tikka and it makes a good rifle better and many ,like me are looking for ways to improve and the quality of rifle stocks is very varid.
Oh and I'm a joiner by trade and a company I deal with also puts a small bag of haribo's in my orders. Always makes me smile. 🙂

some are a bit more interesting and/or creative than others. quite a lot of rifles are just same old same old, cerakots pattern change or a different stock/marketing buzzword or #long range to temp the innocent

I 'toyed' with this Ruger American Ranch and a Howa Mini 1500 for a couple of weeks before buying , I looked at review after review and realized that each review ( when you boil them down )
comes to one reviewer's opinion, in the end, not to mention the type and manufacturer of their chosen ammunition.
I did not decided in Ruger's favour this time, I hope I've made the correct decision. Time will tell, won't it.

@@regsparkes6507 i have reviewed hundreds of rifles over the last 15 yers and in fairness, cant think of a Howa I ever thought was that impressive but ruger seems to make fun, effective guns at good prices. Each to their own, i just have a lot of experience of both.

I’ve have just brought the 16” 5.56 Gen II Ranch rifle here in the uk mainly because of compact size . lightweight short throw in the truck /tractor on the farm .. I’ve got to say it shoots brilliantly, very impressive for the price , how Ruger built these for the price I don’t know …
Trigger is average IMP I couldn’t adjust it down lower the 3-1/2 LB so I’ve ordered a Timney replacement
To adjust the LOP & Cheek Riser undo the rear sling swivel , additional weights are available too ..
I’ve seen the Ranch model available in 5.56 308 7.62x39 & the 300 Blackout in the uk ..
