How To Train Your Dragon is set in the Scandinavian Islands during the viking era. Most of the adult characters have Scottish accents, so yes, they are somewhere in the general area you described.
The Scottish accent was a good choice. Genetically speaking, 1/3 Scottish men still have Y chromosomal dna that can be traced directly back to coastal western Norway, or “Vikings” if you will
I love that he was able to correctly identify that Hiccup and Toothless were falling during that part of the track and predict the rest of the scene without even having listened to the rest of the piece yet!
One of my favorite movie franchises of all time. I really like the song "For the Dancing and the Dreaming" from How To Train Your Dragon 2. It's a proposal ballad sung by Hiccup's parents, who have separated for 2 decades finally back together, but for how long. You'll have to watch the movies to find out.
The music from the test drive scene is one of my all time favorite soundtracks from the first HTTYD film! well that and the Forbidden Friendship soundtrack!
Httyd is my absolute favourite soundtrack of all time and forbidden friendship is certainly a something else entirely. He really should react to more of these like The Vikings Have Their Tea or See You Tomorrow, maybe even good old This is Berk
HTTYD music is genuinely unmatched with so many film like music! Yes yes I know there’s plenty of others that are absolutely gorgeous but considering this was one reason why the films were so good, because the music really impacted the scenes. Just like any good film, if the is garbage, let the music carry it. OR you can’t make a great scene without great music.
That ending swell I believe is the first time it's featured in the movie, and it becomes a triumphant motif in the movie. It's essentially the series' theme, and it is present in every movie. I recommend listening to Where No One Goes from this movie as well!
The best part of this song is that it combines Hiccup's theme and Toothless's theme perfectly, so well that you'd never realize they're two separate pieces
4:26 every time I hear this on my Spotify liked songs Playlist I get goosebumps every single time and I haven't seen the movie in ages aside from like movie reactions, but this song is just that damn good
What should be noted is the particular scene this score is in. Trust me, this music really fits the situation as things go from 0 to 100 all within the span of 2 and a half minutes. I HIGHLY suggest you watch the movie to fully appreciate the scene because, as the name suggests, this is a “test drive.” Their first official attempt at flying
John Powell made some of the most gorgeous OSTs I’ve ever listened to in my life. One of my personal favorites from the first httyd film is “Dragon Training.” If you’re listening to more OSTs I have to recommend “Eda’s Requiem” from the Owl House by Brad Breeck (he posts much of his work on his RUclips, if you do listen to his Eda’s Requiem music suite you want to start listening at 13:34), or if you’re still in the John Powell mood, “Po Finds The Truth” by Powell and Hans Zimmer is gorgeous and has so many great moments
Every time I hear this music, I feel like i'm seeing the whole world from the sky by riding a plane, or a dragon, or whatever it is. This music is total absolute incredible.
The second you said you hadn't seen the movie, I knew you'd be blown away by this. This movie has genuinely one of the best original soundtracks in ANY animated film. Every single track in the OST of ANY of the 3 films is an absolute banger. You can just put the playlist on shuffle and not feel a single dull moment.
I think my fav out of that movie is “This is Berk”. It introduces so many leitmotifs and has such beautiful dynamics. A perfect score to start off a movie!
you don't even have to react to the rest of the soundtrack but i highly recommend you watch how to train your dragon... it's been my favorite movie for probably almost a decade now. it has little dialogue and relies heavily on its music to convey emotion and plot, so so beautiful!!!
i grew up with movies like hercules and the little mermaid and so many other classic animations but How to Train Your Dragon is my favorite by a land slide and this score and how they reprise it for each film is how they do it. I get chills and I can literally watch the first scene with it in my head playing as it goes on. I can literally feel the soundtrack and I do not have any other way to explain it. It is a musical masterpiece in my opinion and John Powell deserves every bit of praise he gets for this piece.
YAAASSSS How To Train Your Dragon is one of my all time favorite movies. That opening shot of the camera soaring over the ocean? Enchants and imerses me every time. And this whole score is so memorable and perfectly crafted. SO glad you checked this out, and I hope it becomes a gateway for you to check out more from the franchise. :D
On the topic of How To Train Your Dragon, I'd recommend the song "Where No One Goes" from the second movie. It's absolutely amazing, and makes me feel magical every time I listen to it.
This is one of my all time favorite movie score pieces. So much going on with the two themes starting off seperate and unifying at the apex of the piece. Its an astonishing work of orchestral magic. Powel revealed his inner beast with this score segment, when you combine the following two scores, you get the feast of an epic cinematic opera.
There is this other guy that gets into how the music tells the story and how it fits into what is going on, and you NEED to watch that, it gives the piece a whole new level of complexity and geniusness
I'd recommend giving a listen to the track lit from "a silent voice", I find it to be a very unique and impactful track from the film, actually the films entire soundtrack is quite unique in that reguard. Also it's a great film if you curious
tbh, to really understand this song you need to listen to the music throughout the whole film and watch the scene this piece is from. It's a blend of the two main characters' themes, both of which have been peppered through different pieces throughout the whole film but never together like this.
As mentioned by others...really can't do this without watching the scene because it's timed so perfectly with the flight of Toothless and Hiccup. The highs and lows are matched to the emotional highs and lows and really bring out the drama....it's breathtaking all taken together.
My father showed me this song just the other day, this artist makes a lot of cover songs and I'm not sure if you have ever heard of them but I suggest you listen to Follow The Light by: Cory Wong and Dirty Loops and their thriller cover. These songs with the bass drums and trumpets slaps.
All these years later and I start sobbing in the first 3 seconds. My favorite piece of music in ANY animated movie, probably any movie AT ALL. I feel myself ascend to the sky, riding Toothless or flying alongside him. John Powell, you legend.
YESS! I’ve been waiting for this!! How to Train Your dragon is my entire childhood, and the soundtrack is not only nostalgic but amazing. At one point, I was so obsessed with the movie, that I could tell you what was happening on screen if you paused any of the songs at any point.
I've never clicked one of your videos so fast. I bought this soundtrack on CD as soon as I saw the first movie in cinemas. The music in this movie is incredible and I still listen to it now
If you haven't seen this movies by now, I'm pretty sure you'd really REALLY like them... but then, I'm very biased because it's my favorite film series of all time. And not just because OOO DRAGON... the relationship between the main character, Hiccup, and his father, Stoick, mirrors the kind of relation my dad and I have, and so the first film especially really REALLY resonates with me.
Please watch How to train your dragon. This should give more understanding of John Powell's amazing score. Forbidden friendship,Romantic flight. Brilliant
everytime i think of the movie, i think back to the music, and when i remember the music, i get brought back to watching it for the first time in middle school and that huge smile on my face. the music was beautiful, the movie was masterfully crafted together, AH! I could watch it a million times and the feeling would never go away! best dreamworks movie!
When people say they haven't seen how to train your dragon I genuinely can't believe them sometimes. The music, the story, the comfort it gave me as a kid. I get so excited when I hear anything from any of the soundtracks
The beauty in this piece is how it layers the film’s themes from Berk (Brass and Strings) Hiccup (Wind) and Toothless (Bagpipes) in order to sound like it does. Just epic.
I swear this music absolutely NAILS giving you the feeling of being right there with them soaring through the sky and experiencing the exhilaration of it alongside the characters, its like I can feel the wind whipping.
There are so many amazing songs from how to trian your dragon (Test drive being my all time favorite) but another one that anyways took my breath away was Forbidden friendship, amazing song that can tell a story with or without visuals 👏
The main theme of short notes gives the thrill of flight, nothing's supporting you beneath your feet. The drums and loud bass wind intruments spread out the wide landscape before you. The smooth uplifting melody is the freedom of flight, and the peace of mind of owning the whole sky to yourself.
How to train your Dragon is literally my childhood thank you so much for doing this I’m not feeling great and that music that score made me feel one hell of a lot better
This song is so beautiful. It incorporates both Toothless and Hiccups themes. Both start playing in unison when Hiccup and Toothless start to work together to fly through the cliffs, it’s suck a beautiful scene.
What i love the most about these movie soundtracks, especially how to train your dragon, is that the music tells the story on it's own. If you liked this you really should check out forbidden friendship, from the same movie, its another of these absolute gems!
How to train your dragon was a huge part of my childhood ever since I saw it when I was 8, the entire franchise was just beautiful and amazing, seeing someone react to Test Drive that way just made my day, I love it!
i love this movie so much and i'd probably even say it has one of my favorite soundtracks of all time. the music is so beautiful, fits so well, it's exciting, epic and magical, takes me right back to when i first watched this movie as a kid. i just love it.
Ok I have 150 videos in my watch later but I saw how to train your dragon and I INSTANTLY clicked that was an AMAZING MOVIE with an AMAZING Score. 10/10 would recommend watching the movie
This and cars were the two movies I would watch almost DAILY as a kid. Anytime I hear this song it’s like an entire tsunami of nostalgia hits me and gives me a nice warm feeling.

The music in each movie for each scene is perfect as it’s gorgeous and perfectly dramatic and the right moments. These movies and songs were apart of my childhood and are engraved in my memory and heart and I’ll always love that. Maybe react to the music alone as well as with the scenes they go to! It always makes it better! ♥️♥️

this song is so beautiful for me, it invokes so much nostalgia that whenever I hear it I feel the impulsive need to watch the entire trilogy again which i just did i'm FINE it's only DRAGONS and BONDING and TEARS OKAY
This score is the best piece of music ever written or played. Every time I hear it i get hit with a wave of nostalgia and for me, the song only gets better as I listen to it more.
YO WHAT?! THIS IS MY FAVORITE SONG IN THE ENTIRE TRILOGY!! (maybe even my favorite song from a DreamWorks movie) I even know how to play Test Drive on the piano I literally stopped everything i was doing when i saw the notification 😂
I totally recomend "where no one goes" from how to train your dragon 2 part of the score from test drive finds its way into almost every song in HTTYD!
I am OBSESSED with How To Train Your Dragon. It all started on October 16, 2010. My parents rented How To Train Your Dragon from BlockBuster, and I had no input on their DVD selection. We started the movie and it was okay at the start, the trailers didn't sell it for me...but then we got to the Forbidden Friendship scene. By the end of that scene, I was SOLD!!! I think it was a mix of John Powell's score and the animation and the feelings Hiccup and Toothless were feeling during that scene, but it's such a good franchise, and it's the best franchise, in my opinion! If you haven't watched the movies (How To Train Your Dragon, How To Train Your Dragon 2, and How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World) yet, I guarantee you'll enjoy them! :)
This movie is literally my favorite movie in the entire world and this song nearly brings me to tears of joy every time I listen to it. I adore the soundtrack, and would also highly recommend listening to Romantic Flight and/or Forbidden Friendship. The movie is a must see. :)
I've loved these movies ever since I saw the first one when I was a kid and by god the music is such a huge part of that. Like, when I'm watching stuff or playing something the music actually demanding as much attention as the visuals is a rare thing, but this is one of those times. If you're interested, I would also say Where No One Goes from the second movie is very much worth a listen.
Speaking of Go The Distance from Disney's Hercules David, i highly recommend you listen to the Lucas Grabeel version of that song, i'm telling you the vocals of that version is just emotion central!
that one section where you were questioning the instrument sounds like it would be played by a mix of either/both violin and viola along with flute/piccolo. i play flute and piccolo and that sort of rhythm is pretty common in my music. there’s definitely string instruments in their but i don’t have any experience with those
Thats whats amazing about Test Drive. It gives you that undeniable feeling of thrill and the freedom of no boundaries of just soaring through the open air on whats essentially the Ferrari of dragons (Toothless). That and it creates the most iconic theme of all time
The reason this is one of my favorite music pieces from the movie is because it also tells a story! In the music you can hear Hiccups theme, and toothless’s theme. At the beginning each of these themes are played separately at different times, because in the story they are still not in sync with one another. They aren’t working together. Then that really dire frantic part comes in, where they start falling from the sky. But at the last moment, they begin to work as one, and that is where you hear both Hiccup’s and toothless’s theme playing together for the first time, when they begin to work together! John Powell is a freaking genius!!!
Watching this movie in IMAX was something beautiful! When the First Flight scene came up and Test Drive started to play I knew I had to download that musical score. I felt like I was flying with Hiccup and Toothless
Everytime I hear this track I want to spread out my arms and imagine myself riding toothless in hiccups place. Us gliding over the clouds, the wind against my face, and riding such an amazing creature is a fantasy I've had since first watching this as a little kid.
Ah oh my god you will love the movie! This song is both Hiccup and Toothless themes that come together right when they figure out how to fly as a pair (at 4:32 in your video!) This is my favourite piece of music ever
I don't wanna sound like a dork but this song is introducing the bond between Hiccup and Toothless: at first it's very intense, unknown, what's happening? Then slowly both of their themes collide into one once they finally learn to rely on each other. I love HTTYD
Oh my gosh, this song!! I played it in a school band (I played clarinet on the high notes, imagine the parts at 1:16 but we didn't have strings so we filled it with flutes and clarinet instead lol) it is to this day engrained into my brain
This movie has a Viking origin to it so I imagine Sweden, Denmark and Norway have ties to the music here, though to me it sounds more Scottish. The plot is that the Vikings fought dragons in a bitter rivalry, and the most dangerous of them was injured by the protagonist Hiccup, they ended up bonding after a failed attempt to kill it. This song plays when Hiccup tries to fly with the dragon after making a replaced tail wing for it, he tryings getting used to manually adjusting the tail wing and at one point falls after losing the instructions, great movie amazing piece
I tear up every time I hear test flight, the how to train your dragon trilogy is one of the greatest dreamworks movies ever along with Shrek 1-2, puss and boots 2, megamind and kung fu panda to name a few
I swear my soul gets transported to a whole new world every time I hear this.

I highly recommend "loosing mom" from how to train your dragon 2 it feels like what heartache would sound like, to me at least
I totally recomend "where no one goes" from how to train your dragon 2 part of the score from test drive finds its way into almost every song in HTTYD!
4:24 I will not listen to anyone who says that I say this in every Test Drive comment section, but the melody switch is just too good too leave
Thank you David for physically demonstrating the feelings of my soul with this song
Thank you for whoever recommended this! One of the best soundtracks I didn't know I wanted to see reacted to!
Yes! His is my favorite version.
This song always made me feel like I’m flying alongside Hiccup and Toothless on their first flight.
I get chills every time I listen to this song. Every single time. It’s a wonderful piece.
that one section where you were questioning the instrument sounds like it would be played by a mix of either/both violin and viola along with flute/piccolo. i play flute and piccolo and that sort of rhythm is pretty common in my music. there’s definitely string instruments in their but i don’t have any experience with those
This song is my FAVORITE piece of any score. Watching your reaction to my favorite song is so exciting. Love this!!!
I love his enthusiasm for a fantastic piece of music that I love.
This scene, this whole movie... never fails to give me goosebumps. I can name no other movie or show or anything that means as much to me as this.
The How to train your dragon OST will never not give me chills, every single song is just so good.
Yes! This franchise is my soulmate franchise Love it. Wher noone goes is amazing too!
4:29 my whole body and my whole soul teleported to a magical place of wonders everytime i hear this part.
Thats whats amazing about Test Drive. It gives you that undeniable feeling of thrill and the freedom of no boundaries of just soaring through the open air on whats essentially the Ferrari of dragons (Toothless). That and it creates the most iconic theme of all time
The score for this film reminds me a lot of the score for Ice Age 2 (in particular, the track Mammoths.)
Music and Orchestra in how to train your dragon always has amazed me it never gets enough credit
Us gliding over the clouds, the wind against my face, and riding such an amazing creature is a fantasy I've had since first watching this as a little kid.
i truly recommend watching the scene along with the score. this score accentuates the animation so well
Genuinely one of my favorite orchestral pieces
This music always makes me almost cry. I don’t even know why, it just brings my soul
This song always gives me the goosebombs, which I LOVE IT
Oh my gosh, this song!! I played it in a school band (I played clarinet on the high notes, imagine the parts at 1:16 but we didn't have strings so we filled it with flutes and clarinet instead lol)
it is to this day engrained into my brain
If you want some good songs to listen to I would recommend ship in a bottle (idk who wrote it) and Greedy (by Or30)
@@uncontrollablycaffienated2782 thank you 😊
The moment I hear that score, I just hear "Let's do this, bud." in my head.
