As well as I know the original track, I'm barely even an amateur at mock-ups and this was really enlightening! All the intricacies and details you talked about really clarify what makes the original what it is.
Edit: I also consulted the scorebook from Omni Music Publishing and I think that high "tam-tam" you were hearing is from the garbage cans.

Sounds good! There are little strings flourishes that weren't there, but overall it still sounded pretty strong. John Powell truly created a stunning masterpiece, and you did well to recreate as much as you did!

So awesome Marc! Really very use full, because others composers (like me) can understand some part of the process for try to keep a kind of color, harmony and stile. Alicia's entry is very good (as always). Happy to see you both are still full of energy and vitality. Thanks a lot for this video and congratulations for your great job. A big hug from Taiwan. 😃💪❤

Marc, I found your channel from a ryan leach video of you going through 3 peoples attempt at rescoring a scene from the hobbit. your channel is amazing and there is a lot of attention to detail in this video, I love this style of content, as it is useful ear training that you can use outside of making your own music and invites you to think greater about how composers put their tracks together.
Thank you for your service and I hope you do more videos like this one :)

Man, a huge question of mine as a producer is how and when to quantize music. As a musician I absolutely the romantic era of classical music, but it’s so not quantized lol. I think you explained whether or not to quantize in cinematic music to make it sound more natural and human without it being completely off. Thank you for that 👏

It's fun to see live performances of this track in youtube and when this part comes in it does sound like crap, even with live orchestra. I think there's a huge production behind this track and even with that, you managed to get a nice sound with live samples! Good work!

That is mostly because it requires 12 horns in the original score, which no normal orchestra has

No question this is one of the greatest modern reference tracks for wannabes like myself. Above and beyond the beauty and mastery of John Powell's incredible HTTYD score, the balance and positioning of the instruments in the mix is pure perfection. This sits atop my stack of reference tracks, and it took me forever to come close in my own mockup. That Fresh Air plugin does do wonders, tho 😉

Hey ho! Commenting on this video a bit late, but I wanted to point out a few things.
    1. This style of videos where you try to figure out all the nuances of the giants are really extremely informative. I personally wouldn't mind a 7-hour video or a whole playlist if it means that we get to learn more. Of course, your time is very important too, so be free to make your own choices, and we'll happily roll along.
    2. About the track itself, I think what's missing in the mix are some really powerful electric guitars or at least a reese bass. These guitars have a sound character of being really punchy and blending into the lower registers of the horns and the middle registers of the trombones from what I can hear. They also have a wide stereo image and follow the downward movements of the double basses in that upheaval. I do believe there is also a downer somewhere in there too or a sub bass following the double basses to give it the extra oomph where the percussion isn't enough. Overall, I think that the gritty quality of that moment in that track is really what gave me goosebumps when I first heard it, and it still does to this day. The power is simply too immense.
    3. #GotTillTheEndThanksMarc
    4. Godspeed ahead, and wish you the best :)

Loved this video. Great job. Quick question as I’m new to keyboards and haven’t produced music in 20+ years… why use that fader mixer for controlling volume instead of the control on the keyboard? I’m sure there a good reason for it. I’ve seen many composers using a fader system but I don’t understand why yet. Thanks!

Great video, but I don't know man, it seems that the 2nd half of your track started dragging too much. Also, reverb and "air" made a considerable change, so I don't recommend to downplay it as much, although I have to agree that without "balancing" the effect would have probably not been as great.
