- Frank from Just Like Priest with Simon Phillips at NAMM 2009 performing the classic Judas Priest tune from Sin After Sin called Dissident Aggressor. A memory of a lifetime... thanks Simon!! www.myspace.com/justlikepriest
In my opinion this is as close as it gets to the studio version and I don't care what anybody says Simon is in the top 5 drummers in the history of rock and roll.
Simon is at the top as a drummer period
there is no better rock n roll drummer than simon; maybe no drummer at all that is better than simon.
That singer could easily, for two songs enough;-), emulate Rob Halford. And it's badass to hear Simon Phillips doin these songs again on drums, as they were meant to be played. I'm in aw for that drummer, what a great ear for music that guy must have. Not just for drumming, but for arranging music and an "on-ear" sense that's not common.
Simon is as good as they get even as a teenager he was a legend.
Chris Broderick, Mike Duda, Andy Timmons and Simon Phillips. Geees! What a backing band! Great version!!
Thank You Simon! it's been a favorite of mine for 30 years! still tryin to get that one! lol never dreamed in a million years that you would ever play that one live with anyone! thanx Frank you ROCK! and made it possible with the boyz! THANX TM Simon's drummer fan from Beantown!
*_Nailed the groove to the stage..._*
Wow!!! Rob looks like 25 years younger here!!!
🤣🤣🤣
Holy shit.
I did not know that, sir. Thanks for the info. He definitely would have been a great addition to the greatest metal band in the world!!
If I am not mistaken one of the guitar players is Chris Broderick ex of Jag Panzer, Megadeth,Nevermore, Act of Defiance and l am pretty sure he did a bunch of shows with Metal Allegiance!
Brilliant vocals and of course drumming by the man himself! This was superb! 🤘😮
This guy sings the way Halford did 45 years ago lol
:) Yes it is! :)
Who is the singer?
Frank, did you sing in a band called "Infrared" back in the day in San Diego? I used to be good friends with Ed Florencia (Sp?) who I believe is your cousin.
Timmons is back there too
you are aware that simon sessioned judas priest's sin after sin album in 1977?
Simon Phillips played with Priest for only one album. He got a raw deal, but went on to play with Pete Townshend. I think Judas Priest made a big mistake in letting him go, but they probably did him a hugh favor.
Priest didn't let him go. The band was all for keeping him. He left by himself due to obligations with other bands.
And Andy Timmons on the other guitar :)
Was that beginning vocal part falsetto or sung?
rob doesnt do falsetto .
its full voice
and the guy here sing that way... no falsetto .
falsetto is breathy headvoice .. quite soft .
nothing to do with that .
Duh!
Wish the singer was in key and had a stronger voice but if that was the case he would be Halford.
Emm halford is often just in key...I don't hear him as weaker than halford to be honest. And remember how old he is here.
It’s very difficult to sing in the upper register with full authority, or thickness.
The more diaphragmatic pressure, the more tension, and so most singers sound a bit breathy in the high notes.
Push too hard and you hit the notes “black” with excessive vocal fry, or get caught in the throat and lock up.
He did fine by choosing less pressure for more clean.
It’s a balancing act.
The chest register work was mediocre, however.
@polhist he disagrees with agreeing to- SQUIRREL!
Pitcher singing...nice screams but the rest is totally pitchy!!!! Great drums Simon!!!!
I just watched your band Frank would blow yo ass off the stage pal trust me!
@@batphink2655 lol
Laugh all you want you strain hitting the high notes, you need some vocal training!
You had a lyric sheet in your hand when your band played Metal Gods and you still f..ked it up LOL! What more do I need to say! Frank Blows you off any stage!
@@batphink2655 😢
WTF is Simon doing there with all those weirdos!?
Simon is with these weirdos because JP are legends and I am pretty sure Judas Priest have made more millions than Toto could ever dream of.Sin After Sin is what made Simon famous.
@@rancantrell Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita projected Simon onto a lot of people's radar... I think he was mid to late teens!!
Also Simon and Andy Timmons have played together a LOT.
Well, yeah I do remember that. But I think this style doesn't fit Simon at all.
Awesome vocals!!!!!
Simon Phillips played on the album "Sin after Sin", and that was all he signed on for. He was never meant to be a part of the band, as far as I know. And Les Binks was just as good as Simon, so Priest did just fine.
the band wanted to have him but he had commitments with Jack bruce and stuff .
Roger glover called Lesbinks after
I wish Simon stayed. Maybe then they wouldn’t have changed so many damn drummers over and over again
I am sorry, but Les Binks might be a good drummer, but not as outstanding, technically brilliant and creative as Simon Phillips at all, who is a world class drummer. Les Binks had some chops and was tight, ok, but not half the brilliance of Phillips. Obviously Priest was looking for a drummer who could imitate Simons style in some way. I like the records with Binks, but Sin after Sin is so amazing because of the drumming as well. And he was only 19 years old then. Brilliant.
LOL....Simon was the original drummer on this song!
Simon Phillips is the complete package.done alot of different gigs with everyone. He has it all. The best ever.
I agree
Frank! What an absolutely killer job and incredible experience to have shared the stage with those guys - congrats! Was great to see you the other night and I'll be at the next show!
That burst at the beginning, though 👑
Really, this was brilliant all-around.
@JustLikePriestSoCal Well, you sound great in your own right, so keep up the good work! Must've been awesome to share the stage with the legendary Simon Phillips!
my question is y he doesnt use premier drums? i like how premier makes their shells a little smaller so theres plenty of room for the heads and even adding wrap.
Wow album perfect Great performance ..Now I need the Priest version from the 70's or 80's. Also Simon would not play it if he didn't like it..Simon Phillips was never a road dog.
WOW! I couldn't make it to NAMM this year thanks.I bet you that your ears rang for two days. They jack up the sound ,in those hotel ballrooms, like it was the Staple Center. Simon can play anything, and very well,at that
The spare frontman for Judas Priest
Damn
Baddass bro!
Hey man, this once you did blow my mind. First saw the Take Hold of the Flame and it was great too. But nothing compared to this one cover.
I salute you.

The spare singer for Judas
Cool!
Nice job
this guys Rips At Halford stuff ..Damm great falseto/head tone,,wow,,I bet he could Do KINg Diamond too
judas Priest high vocals are Full voice .
not falsetto .
judas Priest high vocals are Full voice .
not falsetto .
the way Rob and King do high notes are totally different .
king is falsetto.
rob is from chest .. full out .
Ok this is a really old post but I must correct you both.
Falsetto can be a misleading term
They both sing above the vocal break.
This guy sings in “supported falsetto “
This means vocal cord closure, and diaphragm support
Diamond sings in “unsupported falsetto “
Cords open, and no diaphragm pressure, like the BeeGees
Further, this guy emulates Tate with his vibrato and vocal cry mode onset’s.
Sounds great.
