It is in a full view of everybody and anybody and also within an earshot of other people. If you dont believe me try doing something else which is considered private in a cafe... like having sex....

Staff in USA is annoying with their constantly asking questions, they made it all about themself. We are at the restaurant/caffe to enjoy our time, and not to be interrupted by waitress all the time. I am Serbian living in Canada and I am sick and tired of fake smiles and small talks at restaurants, stores...etc. I like an honest European way of service!
It's not about ourselves, quite the contrary. Here in America they ask to make sure your food tastes good and if you ever need anything. I respect your opinions though☺

Here konobars don't come to sell you something else because it is considered rude to interupt someone without any need. They come to you if you call for them. It's as simple as that.

I prefer Serbian style of service. I’d appreciate if establishments don’t employ American style. I don’t want servers coming to my table every 5 minutes and checking on me, trying to get me out of the place if I don’t order anything else. I want to sit and enjoy my drink and the experience. Life is not about selling stuff but about experiences. If a place tried to pull that shitty American style of selling on me, I would not come back.

I've been in Italy for 3 months now and the coffee here is really good, but the thing that pisses me off is they just drink their espresso in 1 sec and go away, while in Serbia we drink it for at least an hour 😅
Dear Charles, I haven't seen all of your videos about Serbia, so I don't know if you have read all about its history, but I have to tell that it is very rich and interesting and it's necessary to understand the people and to appreciate them, their feelings, to understand the monuments, castles, buildings, museums...I am not from Serbia, but I love the country, it's very beautiful, everything there is beautiful.

Was at a cafe in San Juan del sur, Nicaragua and they had a sign that if you didn't have time to sit and enjoy your coffee you needed to reprioritize. They didn't offer to go cups. 😀

I live in Toronto, Canada, have been to US many times, and , yes, service in restaurants is really high level, with some exceptions, but ,will tell you why me and my friends stopped going to a busy restaurant in Toronto. The waitress was so annoying, coming every 10 minutes to ask us "Are you guys OK with your drinks"?, she was actually forcing us to drink more, and for someone like me, who is not big on alchohol, it was torture. I think she ruined our night, and at one moment I told her" Do you know what, dont you think that is too much, if I need more drink, I will call you". Of course, she was not happy, and gave us attitude, but, at least we were left to finish our dinners without interruption'. I prefer to raise the hand , which is a signal for the waiter to come at my table, and the least I'm disturbed, the bigger tip the waiter will get, and I'm really big on tips, especially when I realize the waiters are students.
What ever floats your boat. I couldn't get a decent coffee when I went over to California. Too sweet and as if it's laced with cream. Yes the staff in Serbia don't hound you. As that's the way the people like it, not being disturbed while you are sitting down and having a good conversation. It's called 'Café Lifestyle.' The major difference is that in Serbia people like companionship and spending time with each other. Different culture.
your guest speaker said it right: we are talking about two different typs of service. the American style reminds me a lot to the Austrian and Swiss gastro-school. I do prefer the Balkans gastro because I don’t like to get interrupted while I‘m talking or chewing my food.
A well trained waiter should be around but not at your desk every 5 minutes disturbing the customer. He/she should stand somewhere near and survey the customers, when a customer makes a gesture he/she should come. The best restaurants are those where you don't have to raise a hand, a nod is enough. In the old days, when waiters actually went to school, that is what they were taught. Most European establishments, outside tourist hot spots, are like that. It is consider a basic etiquette. The American "style" on the other hand is nothing but a crude tool to make the customer order more frequently and get out as soon as they are done, practically forcing them out. Profit over experience. No offense to you Americans but we do not want that here. The coffee (espresso): 100% arabica has been available in multitude establishments for years, most often in shops where Illy is the preferred brand.

With all due respect... In a country full of very well educated people we suddenly need 'consultants' from the US etc...(?) I would love to know what qualifies him to do this type of consulting. Also, I don't follow Charles as such, but it strikes me as if his summer affair (whatever it may be) possibly exploits young educated Serbs too. Hospitality sector generally pays very low wages in the US. Fellow Serbs, don't be fooled by niceties... I have no doubt in my mind there are many wolves in sheep's skin living/working in Serbia and 'loving' Serbia. Despite being portrayed as monsters all over the world, most of us are kind people and we take others at face value. What we are not well equipped for is dealing with people who put value to a face! Some nationalities have slave master roots. Once a slave master, always a slave master! Many, many parts of the US are riddled with poverty, addiction and lack of education and opportunities. Why don't these gentlemen invest their good efforts there? After all, it is often said charity begins at home. And lastly, are these foreign nationals working in Serbia paying any income taxes to Serbia? I have my doubts. Our government should straighten that out and also impose 'reparation' taxes in addition.

American style managed restaurants do not pay waiters much, as it is in American culture to motivate them to work better by guests paying bigger or smaller tips. So, the incentive is different, the tip is up to a guest. I live in Bosnia, which has the same tipping culture as Serbia and I tip some 10 percents of the bill. In the States it would be much higher percentage, I suppose. And yes, I prefer not to be bothered by constant inquiries from a waiter, especially in coffee shops. I am there to relax and to talk to my friends. We will ask for assistance if needed. Would not be happy to see our coffee shops scene changed into American.
I think it's just difference in mentality. Serbs like to sit and enjoy. We don't like waiter to hover. We don't like them to be too invasive. We don't like to tip them 20%.We are not obliged to make their payments. We can tip them if we like service. Waiters do not want to disturb us. You can call them if you want more drinks. But if he comes often and bothers us, we can be rude to him. Or even curs him. So... Not like America at all

A waiter is not a car seller, they are not there to ask you every 10 min do you want something more and to push you to order sometheng else. A good waiter should come and take your order and serve you polately. Approaching to the customers often without being called is not polite , unless if they pass buy and clean the ash tray (usualy in Serbia smoking is allowed) and in that moment they usualy ask you if you need something else. But sometimes customers can be rude and sit for hours with one drink , which is wrong as well.
I’d hate if Serbia becomes like USA! I grew up in Yugoslavia and my Dad travelled extensively (his work). When he returned from his visit to USA, he told me this joke: an European man arrived in USA and his host was proudly showing all available gadgets including a shaving machines available in public bathrooms... “you place a quarter in this slot, put your face in this opening, and our machine does the rest, including soaping, shave, rinse, aftershave lotions and it only takes one minute...” visitor looked very puzzled and thoughtful. His host asked him what he thought about USA technology. Visitor then said - “ I don’t understand how this machine works because not every man has the same face?”. Upon which the host simply said - “they do afterwards...” So, my Americans friends, there lies my problem. Most Europeans do not want to be like USA. In fact, I’d comfortably say, this is the last place on Earth we would wish to emulate and become similar to. Your obsession with money, and shitting on anyone who is in your way in obtaining the said money, is legendary. Why on Earth would we wish to be like that? More to the point, ask yourselves- why are you in Serbia? You bombed the country within an inch of her life and you now wish to profiteer from the harm you created by teaching Serbs how to be like you? WTF! Go home, BUT if you wish to stay and enjoy this amazing place, accept it as it is. Serbs are NOT FOR CHANGING! Our waiters understand our culture and know how it works. We know when we want to have another beer, have food or we are ready to go home. Honestly! We’ve been doing a long time and are mostly grown ups. Ne placamo ni mi nase radnike adekvatno i nije do toga. U SAD je jednostavno pritisak na sve zaposlene u "usluznoj industriji" da budu agresivni, da prodaju vise svega sto nude. Isto je i kada odete u neku prodavnicu, a i klijenti u Americi su jako zahtevni i puni ocekivanja.Izivljavaju se nad zaposlenima ako ne trce za njima, a nasi ljudi su puno skromniji. Zivim u USA, radio sam kao prodavac dok sam studirao, bilo je uzasno. Zato i imam razumevanja za zaposlene.

This guy should watch videos made by other Americans who visited or live/lived in Europe. Here in Europe I think it is more common for waiter to disturb guest as little as possible. Here it is nothing unusual to sit with our friends and talk for one hour or even longer with just one coffee. We love that feeling of slow pace and how relaxing it is after stressful day at work. Waiter buzzing around me would be annoying. I want from waiter to be there when I need him and that's all.
I’ve traveled in 5 American states and I’m sorry Charles but American stile of coffee “stinks” cause it’s filtered so it tastes like “dirty water” hahaha! You are absolutely right. We also love our Novi Sad, that spirit was even better in '80's, believe me. Forget anti communist propaganda. In Novi Sad, the air is always clear and sweet.
“We’re trying to focus on the ways service goes in the rest of the world”. Why do you think we have to do that if it doesn’t comply with our culture and the way of being? And why should we renounce our ways and do things the same way as all other places? Pubs (kafana) have centuries long tradition in Serbia, there is no need to change services into more consumerism-oriented like in the US. That’s not our thing, sorry.
I like Loft - I like the service there. It is not US service, thank goodness. They leave me alone until I want something. The waiters remarked on my politeness, I'm from the UK and they are not used to 'please and thank you'.

I currently live in the U.S., (have obviously lived in Serbia) in addition I lived in England for 2 years and have visited other countries as well. It might surprise most but...Bar/Restaurant hospitality in the U.K. is very different to their “Western” counterpart’s hospitality standards in the United States....* *Ultimately, I believe that (at its core) the discrepancy is due to THE TIP. In the U.S. a 15% Gratuity is all but a requirement...mainly because, most of the Server’s income comes from Tips....Repeatedly Bad Service = Less Tips, Less Tables and eventually you get fired....meanwhile....Repeatedly (increasing) Good = More Tips, More Tables, eventually this leads to being scheduled during the Best (higher earning potential) Work Hours (which leads to even Higher Tip percentages like 25%) and usually leads to promoting to a Manager’s position.* *Basically, it’s the classic “U.S. reward system” model...*
Kafana in Serbia actually dates back to 16th century I believe, meaning that the tradition is older than USA. It's our way of living, don't try to change it
In the U.S a waiter is payed $2.85/hour compared to the minimum of $8 ! An American waiter earns from the tips. Tipping is expected in the US almost like obligatory. Europe is different. Quite different.

As someone who has lived in the US for the last 45 years, I like Serbian style service over the rush rush of American service so I don't think Serbia needs American consultants on how to run a restaurant. What I really dislike even more is the fast food crap from the US. Does Serbia need McDonalds and KFC and Coca Cola??? Not really. Compare fat ass Americans to Serbs, but a lot of Serb kids lately are starting to look like they are spending too much time at McShits and drinking 24 oz. Mountain Dews. Not good.

I've been in Italy for 3 months now and the coffee here is really good, but the thing that pisses me off is they just drink their espresso in 1 sec and go away, while in Serbia we drink it for at least an hour 😅
Dear Charles, I haven't seen all of your videos about Serbia, so I don't know if you have read all about its history, but I have to tell that it is very rich and interesting and it's necessary to understand the people and to appreciate them, their feelings, to understand the monuments, castles, buildings, museums...I am not from Serbia, but I love the country, it's very beautiful, everything there is beautiful.
I love to have some privacy at a coffee shop. No need to ask me if I want something else or more.
If you’re ever in New Jersey, there is a Serbian cafe called the “Bubamara” which harnesses the same cafe elements you like.

Was at a cafe in San Juan del sur, Nicaragua and they had a sign that if you didn't have time to sit and enjoy your coffee you needed to reprioritize. They didn't offer to go cups. 😀

I live in Toronto, Canada, have been to US many times, and , yes, service in restaurants is really high level, with some exceptions, but ,will tell you why me and my friends stopped going to a busy restaurant in Toronto. The waitress was so annoying, coming every 10 minutes to ask us "Are you guys OK with your drinks"?, she was actually forcing us to drink more, and for someone like me, who is not big on alchohol, it was torture. I think she ruined our night, and at one moment I told her" Do you know what, dont you think that is too much, if I need more drink, I will call you". Of course, she was not happy, and gave us attitude, but, at least we were left to finish our dinners without interruption'.
I prefer to raise the hand , which is a signal for the waiter to come at my table, and the least I'm disturbed, the bigger tip the waiter will get, and I'm really big on tips, especially when I realize the waiters are students.

What ever floats your boat. I couldn't get a decent coffee when I went over to California. Too sweet and as if it's laced with cream. Yes the staff in Serbia don't hound you. As that's the way the people like it, not being disturbed while you are sitting down and having a good conversation. It's called 'Café Lifestyle.' The major difference is that in Serbia people like companionship and spending time with each other. Different culture.
I find this to be the case with the entire Balkan region. People are a lot more relaxed and social than in the US.

A well trained waiter should be around but not at your desk every 5 minutes disturbing the customer. He/she should stand somewhere near and survey the customers, when a customer makes a gesture he/she should come. The best restaurants are those where you don't have to raise a hand, a nod is enough. In the old days, when waiters actually went to school, that is what they were taught. Most European establishments, outside tourist hot spots, are like that. It is consider a basic etiquette.
The American "style" on the other hand is nothing but a crude tool to make the customer order more frequently and get out as soon as they are done, practically forcing them out. Profit over experience. No offense to you Americans but we do not want that here.
The coffee (espresso): 100% arabica has been available in multitude establishments for years, most often in shops where Illy is the preferred brand.

In a country full of very well educated people we suddenly need 'consultants' from the US etc...(?) I would love to know what qualifies him to do this type of consulting.
Also, I don't follow Charles as such, but it strikes me as if his summer affair (whatever it may be) possibly exploits young educated Serbs too. Hospitality sector generally pays very low wages in the US.
Fellow Serbs, don't be fooled by niceties... I have no doubt in my mind there are many wolves in sheep's skin living/working in Serbia and 'loving' Serbia.
Despite being portrayed as monsters all over the world, most of us are kind people and we take others at face value. What we are not well equipped for is dealing with people who put value to a face!

Many, many parts of the US are riddled with poverty, addiction and lack of education and opportunities. Why don't these gentlemen invest their good efforts there? After all, it is often said charity begins at home.
And lastly, are these foreign nationals working in Serbia paying any income taxes to Serbia? I have my doubts. Our government should straighten that out and also impose 'reparation' taxes in addition.

American style managed restaurants do not pay waiters much, as it is in American culture to motivate them to work better by guests paying bigger or smaller tips. So, the incentive is different, the tip is up to a guest. I live in Bosnia, which has the same tipping culture as Serbia and I tip some 10 percents of the bill. In the States it would be much higher percentage, I suppose. And yes, I prefer not to be bothered by constant inquiries from a waiter, especially in coffee shops. I am there to relax and to talk to my friends. We will ask for assistance if needed. Would not be happy to see our coffee shops scene changed into American.

I think it's just difference in mentality.
Serbs like to sit and enjoy. We don't like waiter to hover. We don't like them to be too invasive. We don't like to tip them 20%.We are not obliged to make their payments. We can tip them if we like service.
Waiters do not want to disturb us. You can call them if you want more drinks. But if he comes often and bothers us, we can be rude to him. Or even curs him. So... Not like America at all

A waiter is not a car seller, they are not there to ask you every 10 min do you want something more and to push you to order sometheng else. A good waiter should come and take your order and serve you polately. Approaching to the customers often without being called is not polite , unless if they pass buy and clean the ash tray (usualy in Serbia smoking is allowed) and in that moment they usualy ask you if you need something else. But sometimes customers can be rude and sit for hours with one drink , which is wrong as well.
I’d hate if Serbia becomes like USA! I grew up in Yugoslavia and my Dad travelled extensively (his work). When he returned from his visit to USA, he told me this joke: an European man arrived in USA and his host was proudly showing all available gadgets including a shaving machines available in public bathrooms... “you place a quarter in this slot, put your face in this opening, and our machine does the rest, including soaping, shave, rinse, aftershave lotions and it only takes one minute...” visitor looked very puzzled and thoughtful. His host asked him what he thought about USA technology. Visitor then said - “ I don’t understand how this machine works because not every man has the same face?”. Upon which the host simply said - “they do afterwards...”
So, my Americans friends, there lies my problem. Most Europeans do not want to be like USA. In fact, I’d comfortably say, this is the last place on Earth we would wish to emulate and become similar to. Your obsession with money, and shitting on anyone who is in your way in obtaining the said money, is legendary. Why on Earth would we wish to be like that? More to the point, ask yourselves- why are you in Serbia? You bombed the country within an inch of her life and you now wish to profiteer from the harm you created by teaching Serbs how to be like you? WTF! Go home, BUT if you wish to stay and enjoy this amazing place, accept it as it is. Serbs are NOT FOR CHANGING! Our waiters understand our culture and know how it works. We know when we want to have another beer, have food or we are ready to go home. Honestly! We’ve been doing a long time and are mostly grown ups.
I/we are not blind to our shortcomings, but they are ours. Enjoy your stay and then go home. Much love 💕

U americi je najnapornija stvar tipps...placajte svoje radnike! Ja cu ostaviti i dati koliko želim, ako želim, tamo stalno računas koliko im moraš ostaviti, znači amerikanci, placajte svoje radnike adekvatno!
Ne placamo ni mi nase radnike adekvatno i nije do toga. U SAD je jednostavno pritisak na sve zaposlene u "usluznoj industriji" da budu agresivni, da prodaju vise svega sto nude. Isto je i kada odete u neku prodavnicu, a i klijenti u Americi su jako zahtevni i puni ocekivanja.Izivljavaju se nad zaposlenima ako ne trce za njima, a nasi ljudi su puno skromniji. Zivim u USA, radio sam kao prodavac dok sam studirao, bilo je uzasno. Zato i imam razumevanja za zaposlene.

This guy should watch videos made by other Americans who visited or live/lived in Europe.
Here in Europe I think it is more common for waiter to disturb guest as little as possible. Here it is nothing unusual to sit with our friends and talk for one hour or even longer with just one coffee. We love that feeling of slow pace and how relaxing it is after stressful day at work. Waiter buzzing around me would be annoying. I want from waiter to be there when I need him and that's all.
I’ve traveled in 5 American states and I’m sorry Charles but American stile of coffee “stinks” cause it’s filtered so it tastes like “dirty water” hahaha! We hated it and couldn’t wait get home and have a proper cup of coffee😂😂😂
Also I hate bringing constantly bothered y a waitress or a waiter, we in Serbia don’t like interruptions because it’s rude but we will ask for anything if we want it and when we ate ready for anything else!!!!

You are absolutely right. We also love our Novi Sad, that spirit was even better in '80's, believe me. Forget anti communist propaganda. In Novi Sad, the air is always clear and sweet.
“We’re trying to focus on the ways service goes in the rest of the world”. Why do you think we have to do that if it doesn’t comply with our culture and the way of being? And why should we renounce our ways and do things the same way as all other places? Pubs (kafana) have centuries long tradition in Serbia, there is no need to change services into more consumerism-oriented like in the US. That’s not our thing, sorry.

I like Loft - I like the service there. It is not US service, thank goodness. They leave me alone until I want something. The waiters remarked on my politeness, I'm from the UK and they are not used to 'please and thank you'.

I currently live in the U.S., (have obviously lived in Serbia) in addition I lived in England for 2 years and have visited other countries as well. It might surprise most but...Bar/Restaurant hospitality in the U.K. is very different to their “Western” counterpart’s hospitality standards in the United States....*
*Ultimately, I believe that (at its core) the discrepancy is due to THE TIP. In the U.S. a 15% Gratuity is all but a requirement...mainly because, most of the Server’s income comes from Tips....Repeatedly Bad Service = Less Tips, Less Tables and eventually you get fired....meanwhile....Repeatedly (increasing) Good = More Tips, More Tables, eventually this leads to being scheduled during the Best (higher earning potential) Work Hours (which leads to even Higher Tip percentages like 25%) and usually leads to promoting to a Manager’s position.*
*Basically, it’s the classic “U.S. reward system” model...*

In the U.S a waiter is payed $2.85/hour compared to the minimum of $8 ! An American waiter earns from the tips. Tipping is expected in the US almost like obligatory. Europe is different. Quite different.

Loft has good coffee, probably the best tasting in Novi Sad but when you order "duza s'mlekom" they you cappuccino and that is not what we drink here. Also why do you close coffee shop at the corner of Strazilovska and Cara Lazara durign weekends!?!

I was born in Sweden, and I am an anomaly. Just google "swedish fika". They love sitting for hours having a coffee and a pastry. I never really understood why. Still don't.
Loft is awsome cafee, but also like rest of us, as seen in comments below, I don't like waiters bodering me. I go out for talks with my girls, no need to boder guests, we have menu in front of our face, if I want something I'll call waiter...

Charles, this is one area where I don't agree with you. As someone who has lived in the US for the last 45 years, I like Serbian style service over the rush rush of American service so I don't think Serbia needs American consultants on how to run a restaurant. What I really dislike even more is the fast food crap from the US. Does Serbia need McDonalds and KFC and Coca Cola??? Not really. Compare fat ass Americans to Serbs, but a lot of Serb kids lately are starting to look like they are spending too much time at McShits and drinking 24 oz. Mountain Dews. Not good.
That's it Charles, promote American style aggressive, overbearing service. Interrupting you every 5 minutes with fake smiles, placing the check on your table before you ask for it, like they're trying to shuffle you out. Charles also prefers watered down filtered American coffee to rich European coffee. This place "the Loft" may soon learn it's lesson from being the new "thing" to being "that annoying American style place with pushy service" that nobody goes to anymore.....
Thankfully, that hasn't happened.

Actually there is no progress in real life, economy, corruption etc its actually getting worse, Belgrade, Novi Sad are all cute and touristy but living here is very hard in many ways.
